This essay attempts to approach the House & Atelier of the Atelier Bow-Wow
Japanese studio that was built in Tokyo, around 2005. Starting from a general review
of the project under the premise of interpreting the work from an oriental perspective,
the main purpose of this essay is to find the architectural order that rules the project
based on the complexity of its spaces. The observation of the work shows -from the
beginning- its exotic character in terms of the difficulty of understanding a specific
delimitation for each space. So, it is necessary to get rid of certain thoughts
constructs and open up to the need to approach the project from an alternative
experience and with a holistic experience: the journey. Knowing that space is
measured and unified according to the physical objects that comprise it, three
constants emerge: the street, the hallway and the staircase. These three material
elements compose and give meaning to the project as they are the means of
articulation and continuity and simultaneously of disarticulation and discontinuity. In
this way, the concept of transformation is approached based on the analysis of the
spatial and project experiences that entails the journey from the sidewalk to the roof
of the building.
Keywords: urban remnant, architectural journey, staircase, transformation.
