Social sciences prioritize human needs without necessarily considering their impact on habitat and wildlife. To achieve primate conservation goals, primatologists must study both human and nonhuman primates in shared landscapes. To address some of these issues, we focused on hunting in Brazil and Mexico to understand the threats to primate populations and their habitat. We compared hunting rates between the study sites: rapid assessment over a large watershed area in Brazil and a long-term project conducted at a single site in Mexico. Primate hunting was categorized according to its use as subsistence hunting, bushmeat or pet trade. Numerous methods were employed to understand primate use, such as free listing, participatory mapping, semi-structured interviews, participant observation, photo sorting, and kitchen surveys. Free-ranging primate demographics in the habitat surrounding villages were assessed with surveys. We demonstrate that while hunting pressure is directly measurable, the cumulative effects of human presence and resource use in landscapes surrounding villages can make consuming primates more detrimental for primate population recovery. By protecting primates and their habitat, the livelihoods of villagers are ensured making it possible to implement sustainable development rules that protect habitat for the future.
