User talk:Inas/Archive
Add topicHello! Welcome to Wikivoyage. I would recommend to start with our Tips for new contributors if you feel like it. To specialize your experience you may want to consider editing your preferences. Please take a second to look at our copyleft and policies and guidelines, but feel free to plunge forward and edit some pages. Scanning the manual of style, especially the article templates, can give you a good idea of how we like articles formatted. If you're new to the whole wiki software look at the wiki markup to get an idea of how to use the wiki markup. If you need help, check out Project:Help, and if you need some info not on there, post a message in the travellers' pub.
Thanks for your contributions to Sydney, and for discussing the redistricting before plunging ahead, but please do make sure the district articles themselves are moved to match the links: this is a fairly tedious and painful process. (WT-en) Jpatokal 01:20, 12 January 2007 (EST)
Vadalism
[edit source]Nice job on handling that vandalism, thanks --(WT-en) Nick 01:48, 30 April 2008 (EDT)
Hello Inas, nice to meet you =) As you probably guessed I'm a bit of a newbie as opposed to you who seems to be quite experienced with Wikivoyage. Having done a bit of research I understand why you have removed my text on Darwin, you are totally right to do so. However there is more to this story! I hope you can help me get a good outcome. The incidences of text I have added were my original work, having had an on going working relationship with Tourism Northern Territory. My understanding is that in this situation my work is acceptable for wikivoyage. You of course were not to know this. So you as the knowledgeable one! How is the best way for me in my situation to add content I have written for travel NT to wikivoyage? Do I need to simply mention it, if so where? Or do I need some other license? Sorry to trouble you, really hope you can help. Thanks in advance, Lex.
Moving page? Tab not available to new account?
[edit source]Inas, Thanks for the reply, I just created an account and don't see the tab for moving the page. I suspect the system waits a few days before providing that ability. I'll see if I can edit the redirect, but short of that I either have to wait or have someone switch it for me. Thanks again. 71.72.165.200 20:53, 27 October 2008 (EDT)
Sydney-YOUR WORK
[edit source]Hiya, Inas! I noticed you've been working on Sydney and environs for a while and I see you are doin' a good job! Keep up the good work, I know how hard it is...any tips on how to keep up with all the districts and cleanliness? THANKS! Keep smiling, (WT-en) Edmontonenthusiast 22:18, 29 October 2008 (EDT)

cities
[edit source]Hey Aussie! I was wondering-[outside Sydney; of course] what city in Australia is your favourite [and why]? Keep smiling, (WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 17:36, 17 November 2008 (EST).
Also, I did a Sydney CotM nom, and by the looks of it, it'd be next month! I'm not familiar with what exactly needs help, so you should go there and say specifically what is needed ;). Keep smiling, (WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 18:37, 17 November 2008 (EST).
- What city in Australia? Sydney is the largest, but certainly creaks around the edges with the amount of people who live there. Its got to be a great destination for travellers, though, lots of a attractions and facilities for tourists. You can spend days, and travel as independently or as guided as you wish. Great beaches, nice climate. Brisbane has better weather, usually staying up around 20 degrees over winter, whereas Sydney drops to the mid-teens over winter. You need to own a thick sweater in Sydney. Brisbane offers less to travllers than Sydney, but with the Gold Coast, and Sunshine Coast, just on the doorstep, the district is never short of things to do. Melbourne lives in Sydney's shadow a bit, and also creaks with the amount of people there, but a very accessible city, with the Dandenongs and the Great Ocean Road on the doorstep. You have to wear a jacket in Melbourne in winter, not just a sweater though. Darwin is a tropical city. Going to the beach or swimming during mid-winter. The long break is taken during mid-winter there. Alfresco dining all times of year. Every winters day is 31 and sunny. Wet and hot during the summer though. Perth has the beaches, like Sydney, and is at much the same latitudes, and climate. It feels remote to be there though. Sydney is already at the arse-end of the world, and Perth is removed from Sydney. You've done the weekend in Albany, and the weekend at the Margaret River. Great locations, but to go anywhere else is a serious undertaking. Being 5 hours closer to South Africa and 3 hours closer to Singapore, doesn't really position you next to anything. Adelaide, good in theory, but seems to lack something in practice. The green belt around the city centre seems more isolating than comforting. The city centre always seems to lack something. But the eineries at the Barossa Valley are close, and the tram to the beaches at Glenelg or out to West Beach make it easy to get away. Hobart, pretty quite city in Tasmania. Seems more historic than Sydney, with many areas better preserved. Cold in winter though, with some snow on the neighbouring hill. Can be cold in summer too. Well worth a visit though. Cairns suffers from having two high a tourist population to local population. Tourists really do blend into the larger cities, but not so to Cairns. Townsville is almost better, has the beaches, the rivers, and walks. Like Darwin tropical and warm during winter, but too hot and wet during the summer, and too many box jelly's to swim, and too expensive to get out to the reef on a regular basis. Where does that leave? Canberra - most people hate the idea of a planned city, and Canberra suffers from this, but it shouldn't. Nice cycling, walking, bushland, and monuments and museums like a Washington DC bonsai. --(WT-en) Inas 22:32, 17 November 2008 (EST)
- Wow. Sounds very interesting. One day i'd like to take a month off and maybe go to Australia-but I hate flying and can't stand being on the ocean (barely can make the vferry from Vancouver to Vic). Maybe one day. Which city is best for shopping? Which city is best for just looking around? Which city has a more urban feel? I've always had the fascination of Perth...seems like a very happenin' place. If you like, (and er interested) I could give you the Canadian equivalent to what you have just said. It'd be ntresiting. Keep smiling, (WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 21:00, 17 November 2008 (EST).
- Hmmm, if you don't like flying and don't being on the ocean, than there may be better destinations for you! Perth has the Swan River going right through the centre, and and venues like Kings Park really take advantage of it. The city centre itself is pleasant enough, but built away from the river. A few nice tall buildings, and a nice square. Shopping is okay. Fremantle is worth well worth a visit too, just under an hour away. Albany is a nice few days away near the southern ocean. Are you afraid of flying, or do you just not like it for other reasons? There are courses you can do to overcome fear of flying. Do you think to we need a wikivoyage travel topic on Fear of flying. There are some similar places in Canada to Australia. Vancouver is a bit like Sydney, built around the water, it is a bit smaller in scale though, and colder in the winter. Ottawa has some similarities to to Canberra, being a government centre and being chosen as a capital between two competing large cities, but Ottawa is a bit more of a city as well. Toronto and Montreal seem to me like no cities in Australia. Totonto really doesn't capitalise on its natural geography. Montreal is different too. The winter climate seems to form a different kind of city. Shopping is okay in any capital city, but Melbourne and Sydney probably provide the best opportunities --(WT-en) Inas 22:32, 17 November 2008 (EST)
- Very interestin' talking to you. Yeah we should have fear of flying. I am afraid of flying-I've only been once and I was so scared-I cried both ways. Vancouver is very warm, rarely gets snow. It has palm and banana trees. Hmm...Vancouver is a very beautiful city. It is very vibrant, has that large park, the best aquarium, and heck-you can ski and go to the beach in the same day! Not to mention it has such cool architecture. Calgary is just a product of oil culture. If it werent for Turner Valley, Calgary would have a metro of 700,000 (500,000 less than today). That being said, it has a dull downtown due to all the office towers(nothing hapens after 7 o clock). 17 Avenue is very vibrant though and the Calgary Zoo is by far world class. Not to mention its by banff, drumheller, and waterton nearby. Edmonton is canadas hidden gem. It is dwarfed by Calgary ,for sure. Has bad reputation. But, its a great capital, has a thriving arts community, has festivals unlike any other city, a pretty damn good retail economy outside of the fat mall, pretty dense urban area (for it's size), the lush river valley that is unforggetable. Also its a major education, gas, and bank centre. Its nice that Jasper and elk island is nearby. It's really growing up. Man I talk lots of Eddy. Winnipeg is the kid that was bullied. It has such beautiful architecture and despite bad expreiences on Osborne Vill. it has some vibrant area. It is also a big museum city. Toronto has two sides-the nameless and the cosmopolitan. In a lot of ways, it is very bland and typical to an american city. In other ways, its very cosmopolitan-vibrant streetlife, grandarchitecture, the lake, numeros museums, Toronto Islands, and that big airport. It is a big hub. And theres the awesome CN with the best views of Torontos extensive urban style. Ottawa is that cute little city. Very low rise, but has some neat architecture. It also has the best museums and is great if yur political. It was set up funny cause it has a greenbelt but its suburbs are goin past it!Montréal is Canadas most international city. It is such a bilingual city and the only city with a downtown in Canada that is busy after 11pm ever y day of the week. It has the unforgettable Mont Royal. I like it but could never go cause of French. Quebec is very cool but very French and does not interest me. It does have a lot of history and the Carnaval there is spectacular. It is a great promoter of winter. Halifax is that littlebig place on the coast and despite its size has a vibrant scene, good fishing and then Cape Breton right there. Victoria is a very cool city though aint interestin to me. It is so dense (low rise) and growing so rapidly its so cool. Plus it has all the natural wonders of van island. The cottage country (Ont) is unforgetabble for if you like nature. Picture wonderful lakes and lush forests fill the area. The north is a very unique experience, unlike antywhere else. Of course, if your like me, youd stay in Yellowknife for the most part (HATE ISOLATION). Hope this helps! Leeme know if you have specific questions. keep smiling ,(WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 22:49, 17 November 2008 (EST).

[edit source]Hey, I was wondering, as I am extremely curious, why do I never see as much coverage of stuff in Oceania as North America and Europe on the net? I mean, WT is a perfect example, you seem to be the only regular contributor to the continent. I was wondering, if you knew, why that is. As I am really really interested. Maybe it is because most of the websites are just having large amounts of North Americans and/or Europeans. But Wikivoyage is very useful to everyone and has coverage of everywhere. Curious, that's all. Keep Smiling, (WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 19:21, 24 November 2008 (EST).
- Can't say I've noticed. Australia seems to have as many contributors as anywhere else on Wikivoyage, relative to its size. As far as Oceania goes, don't forget there are only around 30 million people in all of Oceania, less than the population of Canada. Most live in Australia and New Zealand. Outside of Australia and New Zealand (which have high Internet penetration), the nations are developing and Internet penetration is still quite low.. Compare this to the over a billion people in North America and Europe... --(WT-en) Inas 20:13, 24 November 2008 (EST)
- True and I know the remoteness of a lot of the islands. Guess I was meaning more of New Zealand and Australia and perhaps Papau New Guenia. Again, goes back to probably I visit websites more catered to Euro/NoAm crowds. If you look at [Skyscraperpage there is a lot of Canadian and American discussion but I have seen a lot of places with a lot of Europeans too. And also it is probably you're point you are probably looking at 13 million internet clientele in Oceania, where as there is probably 450 million in North America and Europe. I also see a lot of Asian stuff, so that pop thing is probably correct. But on WT, other than the newb JRG, you, I don't really see any other Oceania contributors in the past week, maybe I'm not looking to much but again most are either American, European, Asian, and to an extent, Canadian (though not near as many Americans or Japanese). Keep Smiling, (WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 20:19, 24 November 2008 (EST).
- I guess you are right. It would be nice to see the stats on edits by country etc.. --(WT-en) Inas 23:05, 24 November 2008 (EST)
- Well If you go to List of Wikivoyageers by location you can see-but most are last seen from 2005. Like the only active Canadians are Shaund, JimDeLaHunt, me, Padraic, and that's it. Keep Smiling, (WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 23:22, 24 November 2008 (EST).
Top End
[edit source]Thanks for your message, Australia's Top End does include parts of the Kimberley and Queensland, and generally I find people simply refer to it as the 'Top End' so I'll edit out 'Australia's'. It's sort of a tricky one because it is considered a region and single destination, which is strange. Thanks for your help with this (WT-en) Lex 23:10, 30 November 2008 (EST)

hello
[edit source]Hi, I think you could help, why does Peter constantly revert this from here "Since this is obviously utterly talking about me, I should put in my words. I think this whole situation has been very rude. If you expect me or others to learn from thisyou need to respond. You can't just revert it, you need to explain and answer questions about it esp. if they are asking. It just seems like you avoid it. This has been handled horribly and banning me doesn't help-it actually makes me more mad *peter*. When people such as me are asking questions and wondering why people are doing this, you sould not DELETE it but reply to it because they are curious. ScorpionKing was very confused and all mr peter did was revert it all. Of course he is mad and is going to swear-he is new and all his work is gone without any conversation. And then when Stefan finds out why, he doesn't even share it, why? If you expect us to actually stop whatever it is, you could at least point it out to us instead of deleting and ignoring. That is very rude. Also, if we are trolling, we are not doing it for attention-we want answers...why is that so hard to actuallyy grasp?Sorry of abruptness. This is happening again-it is very rude because I don't get why all I want is a good reason. This comment should not be deleted Peter, or I should delete yours.edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 18:55, 7 December 2008 (EST). "

[edit source]Hi Inas, I think you could truly help me with the topic at the bottom of Talk:Edmonton because I just remembered recently that you have problems with the Sydney districts so you would be a great help here. Policy articles
[edit source]Just wanted to say a big thanks for the work you're doing on policy articles. I think the navigation between them has been very awkward and a big weakness for the site. And also, (WT-en) nice ;) --(WT-en) Peter Talk 20:18, 7 January 2009 (EST)
Moved from Moved from User talk:(WT-en) Edmontonenthusiast
[edit source]Moved here to avoid having yet another policy discussion on that page.
- I believe your user page is currently contrary to policy on having abuse on user pages. Please make the changes required.
- Your threats made to revert comments by others in revenge are clearly inappropriate.
- Comments ended with "or I will crack", are clearly inappropriate as well as threatening and abusive. Please withdraw them. --(WT-en) Inas 20:34, 11 January 2009 (EST)
- The threshold for what is considred "abuse" is fairly high, and there is precedent for users commenting poorly about other users on their pages - see the third paragraph on User:(WT-en) Jo for example - so there is no need for anyone other than the user in question to change a user page. However, any user who chooses to abuse others on a user page is essentially declarling that they do not respect the Wikivoyage community, and thus should not expect to to be seen as a respected member of that community. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 20:44, 11 January 2009 (EST)
GRRRRRR.. annoyed
[edit source]You should have moved that stuff on the St Just in Penwith page to an Understand section rather than just deleting it. Seems a bit unfair after I spent the time writing it.
- The text was clearly against policy on illegal activities either in the drink or the understand section. policy requires it being deleted. there is mention already of the drug trade in the stay safe section. if you disagree with the policy, and think desciptions of what drugs are available where should be on wikivoyage, please discuss this on the appropriate policy pages. thanks --(WT-en) Inas 00:56, 31 January 2009 (EST)
New Australia map
[edit source]Hey Ian, would you mind taking a look at the new Australia map. In particular, I'm unsure of the road map I drew—did I miss any important routes that need to be on there, did I mislabel any routes, and should I label any other important routes? Thanks! --(WT-en) Peter Talk 20:37, 11 February 2009 (EST)
- Thanks! It's great to get so much criticism on a map, especially with roads—if I don't know the country well, I'm always pretty much in the dark when it comes to which roads to include, and which are primary/secondary. I've made a good deal of changes, and would be happy to hear any other thoughts of yours. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 15:34, 12 February 2009 (EST)
- Thanks again—I'm really happy with how this one turned out. Australia's one of our better country articles, I'd say. Might you be interested in adding region descriptions to the region template? --(WT-en) Peter Talk 21:07, 12 February 2009 (EST)
Sydney/North West
[edit source]Why did you merge the Hills District and Northern Districts pages? The merged area is huge and too much for one page. I was in the middle of working on that but haven't been on for quite some time, so I didn't appreciate coming back and seeing my work destroyed. Please don't do that again. (WT-en) JRG 07:34, 27 February 2009 (EST)
- I disagree that we need to make big changes to all the categories each time. Pages inevitably grow when they are too big and spinoff pages are a natural progression of changes being made. Wikivoyage is not a static book - it's a site that needs ot be constantly expanded. There is a lot missing from the North West article but I will try to expand it until it is way too big and a spinoff is desparately needed. It's disappointing that my changes can't be incorporated at this stage. I have reverted all my changes I think. (WT-en) JRG 21:39, 17 April 2009 (EDT)

Sydney Maps
[edit source]Hey Inas
I've really enjoyed seeing how Sydney coverage has grown, along with my own Copenhagen and Shaund's Vancouver during the past months, and I hope one day to be using the great work one day, when I finally manage to save up enough money for the horrendously expensive plane ticket, and visit some of the wonderful Aussies I've met on my travels - and see the Opera house all of us Danes feel some sort of ownership towards. And hope we'll all make it wikivoyage stars some day.
One thing Sydney desperately needs though, is a district map, as someone who's never visited, just looking at the district section makes me horribly confused, and honestly if I weren't another wikivoyage freak, and were about to visit Sydney, I think I would look for information somewhere else (as is the case in London and Manhattan), which is a real shame with all the good information "hidden" away there. Has a consensus on the districts been reached? how is your mapping motivation? if you are not up for taking the time to creating a map (which I largely prefer), I'd be happy to try to help creating one. --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 20:04, 26 March 2009 (EDT)
- Personally my favourite approach, and something which was fortunately easy to do in Copenhagen, is to go with a "what would (as a native) be the first thing popping into my head, if a tourist came and asked where a destination is" approach. e.g. where do I find the st. paddy parade? - "in southwest Chicago", where do I find the little mermaid? "It's on Østerbro", How do I get to China town, "it's in west end". Where is the Eiffel tower? "I don't fucking know, I've never been to Paris".
- IMHO I do find that getting districts clearly defined, takes priority over the (improbable?) risk of loosing a contributor or two, as long as you give people a fair chance to give some input on the matter. We're are not that many regular users, and someone has to take a decision sooner rather than later. Keep in mind that something clearly defined and tangible makes it much easier for newcomers to contribute. If a casual user is confused as where to put stuff, he or she is just not going to bother, and that means we probably stand to loose much more contributions than the other way around. If you ask me, that JRG dude was an asshat anyway.
- Taking that into account, gray undefined areas is a no-no - so keeping that first paragraph in mind, gulf up the grey area's in surrounding neighbourhoods, instead this time my advice would be to think, where is the Big jugs strip club? "It's nearest Parramatta, so go there and turn right at X street" and hence define the borders ny the most convenient named district.
- Hope that makes sense --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 21:13, 26 March 2009 (EDT)
- Okay. I won't procrastinate too much longer. I think most people in Sydney would locate and give directions to the nearest suburb they know, especially to anywhere south or west. They would first give the closest suburb, and if that wasn't known, a slightly bigger suburb further away, and so on, maybe with an associated compass direction, it would be unusual to use a district. Near the airport, west of Parra, out near Balkham Hllls, near Bondi, out by the National Park, out near Penrith, and so on. --(WT-en) Inas 00:53, 27 March 2009 (EDT)
Editing Panama Home Page
[edit source]The recent additions and changes to the Panama page were designed after some of the European WikiTravel home pages. The Panama page, to me, was starting to read like Wikipedia, not WikiTravel. People have limited time, and short attention spans. The country page needs to attract people to the country, with bullets, that tell them right away; why go there? And if I go, what can I do? If I am interested in surfing, what region, and what company might satisfy this travel desire. Panama City and the Canal Zone seem to be the focus of this page.
- I didn't remove any activities from the Panama page. Just the links to the tour operators promoting them. In fact, I expanded the activities section to mention the activities the tour operators were promoting. The activities are still there, along with the links to the local area guides if people want more information. Please add more info to the Panama page, but please temper the many embedded links to tour operatos and touting. Give the information to the traveller to be able to see the things they would like to see. If they would rather take a tour there, I'm sure they can find an operator willing to take them. If we list every tour operator in the Panama country level guide, it will be a directory of tour operators. Also, could I suggest getting an account, and declaring if you represent a particular tour operator or agency. Thanks. --(WT-en) Inas 20:11, 29 April 2009 (EDT)
I have added my profile. However, if wikivoyage's design is to allow travelers to print pages, like a tour guide book, then detailed information, such as phone, e-mail, etc. should be allowed in. It should be one-stop-shopping, allowing the tourist to print the pages desired, without having to cross reference with a Moon or Frommer's guide, which does list all the info needed to plan and pre-book a trip.
The problem with the Panama home page was the focus on the City and Canal. The perception of much of the world about Panama is there is ONLY the city and canal. I will continue to enhance the Panama pages, as time allows; the best adventure travel is outside the city.
I would like to add some informational blogs (only 3 or 4) to the Panama page. I feel that the blogs would give travelers up to date info on: floods, earthquakes, restaurant reviews by locals, and park and trail closings, etc. Many of the blogs admin's don't have time to add the info to wikivoyage and their blogs. I wanted to know if this was ok before I spend the time doing it.

Sydney Airport Shopping links
[edit source]Hi Inas,
I added links to the Sydney Airport Shopping website but they were removed. These are the official websites as built by the Sydney Airport Corporation. They contain a directory of all the shops available in each terminal, along with guides and offers for visitors to Sydney.
Would it be possible for you to add them back, or what other information would you require to justify adding the links?
Thanks.
- Firstly, I agree the websites are useful to travellers (as are many others). I do, however, think they are in breach of our Project:External links policy. We want information to be in Wikivoyage, and not just provide links to external guides. This is so people can use Wikivoyage offline, and so we don't lose the incentive to get the terminal facilities information into the Sydney guide.
- Secondly, there is already a link to the official Sydney airport website in that section of the Sydney guide. If people want to see the official guide, they can do so easily, including the shopping links. I don't see the need to have three links to Sydney airport sites.
- Also, if you are interested in getting accurate and complete information into Wikivoyage, please feel free to add it, or I would certainly appreciate any additional information, comments or criticism of the information that is presented there.
- You are free to disagree with me on whether the links should be there, but you will have to gain some support for your position. Thanks --(WT-en) Inas 02:16, 4 May 2009 (EDT)
Community consensus
[edit source]Can you get community consensus for my changes? (WT-en) JRG 03:56, 4 May 2009 (EDT)
- Cool. I'm interested in the bigger picture, but I generally have no problems with the Districts apart from the fact that the "North West" area is way too big compared to others. (WT-en) JRG 03:41, 5 May 2009 (EDT)
Darling Harbour map
[edit source]I like your Darling Harbour map. However the Sydney Ferries King St Wharf 3 stop is missing from the map. You may like to show that Parramatta River services depart from there and Pyrmont Bay/Darling Harbour/Circular Quay loop services depart from the Aquarium stop. (WT-en) JRG 08:30, 5 May 2009 (EDT)
SOP
[edit source]Inas - seriously please, stop whinging. I didn't actually revert your edit- I changed it to another reading which is different from what both of us said. I believe in accuracy and reversion is fine when the information is wrong. If it's a matter of opinion like our district disagreement, then it is not ok and I have already apologised for doing it there. Sydney Olympic Park IS within Homebush Bay. The area around it also contains Newington, but the park itself is entirely within the suburb of Homebush Bay. That's what the GNB says (there's currently a proposal to change it, by the way, which is how I know). I've fixed it up and noted that both it and the neighbouring areas (including Newington) have attractions (I would include in this the riverside cycleways on both side of the river). Now let's get on with editing. (WT-en) JRG 05:45, 7 May 2009 (EDT)
- On OSM it would be accuracy. Over there, feel free to ask me whether the suburb boundary goes down the centre of Louise Savage Pathway, or follows the western side. On Wikipedia we could validly discuss a whole heap of facts, including the proposal to change it at the GNB, which I would be interested to hear the latest on. But this is Wikivoyage, and here, it is just pedantry. A traveller would neither know, nor care.
- As to thing whinging bit, that is a bit rich, really, considering the dummy spit I copped from you a week or so ago.
- And as for the editing, yes, I continue to get on with it. This is a sideshow. --(WT-en) Inas 06:33, 7 May 2009 (EDT)
- What is OSM? (WT-en) JRG 09:50, 8 May 2009 (EDT)
- OpenSteetmap . We have ad a GNB names import for a while and have just imported the ABS suburb boundary data, so aligning suburb boundaries to road centres and features is a happening thing. The newington homebush bay boundary is an interesting one, it is on the other side of the inlet, and seems to align to the pathway, but there has probably been construction and realignment since the boundary was decided. imo. --(WT-en) Inas 19:33, 8 May 2009 (EDT)

http://www.citybaseapartments(dot)com - spamming?
[edit source]Hope you're still around... Can you have a look at edits being made by the IP address 84.92.213.133 Seems to be adding to virtually all UK towns and cities a link to http://www.citybaseapartments(dot)com Seems like violation of policy to me, but there's probably too many for me to undo changes. Perhaps you have an easier way to undo those changes?

Hey, by the way -- is the current caption I've authored in Niagara Falls (New York) better? (WT-en) LtPowers 09:15, 26 May 2009 (EDT)
- Thanks. I think I know what you mean -- lively, lightly humorous writing is difficult to write collaboratively, because everyone has a different idea of what's funny and what's going too far. Dry, encyclopedic writing is at least agreeably neutral, but it can be no fun to read at times. =) (WT-en) LtPowers 18:47, 26 May 2009 (EDT)

[edit source]Sorry, I don't really understand this edit of yours? A "decorated" restaurant is not the same at all as a "tastefully decorated" restaurant, and abbreviating the word "kilometres" in a phrase bolded for emphasis is also awkward. (WT-en) Jpatokal 21:59, 3 June 2009 (EDT)

Wi-Fi or wireless internet
[edit source]Yes, I do disagree. I think wireless internet is more widely used in that particular context (including by the hotel in that listing) than Wi-Fi, and I prefer words to jargon. (WT-en) Gorilla Jones 19:29, 23 June 2009 (EDT)
Poolad Kaf
[edit source]No, I don't think it would. It's a small ski resort in a remote part of Iran, with all of two mentions on the entirety of Google. It's clearly not an article. I merged the info into Kars and advised the user who created it. (WT-en) Gorilla Jones 21:13, 23 June 2009 (EDT)
- That's simply not true. The deletion policy says "Major attractions and geographical areas can and should be redirected, but articles about restaurants, bars, hotels, and other such commercial establishments should be deleted rather than redirected, in order to curb touting." Poolad Kaf is an extremely minor attraction — this would be the third site on the entirety of the internet to even mention it, and the first two mentions weren't anything of note — it's also a commercial establishment. (WT-en) Gorilla Jones 21:37, 23 June 2009 (EDT)
- A rule of thumb is a general guideline, which the policy follows with a more detailed explanation, because the rule of thumb is insufficient by itself: a bar is a place, a hotel is a place, and yet those things are not desired as redirects, despite being permitted by the rule of thumb. So I don't know what you think I was trying to hide with my selective quotation. You keep raising this distinction about how ski resorts aren't as commercial as bars, restaurants, and hotels. Every ski resort I've visited has been keen for cash in exchange for their services, to no less degree than any other business; obviously, our experiences differ. In any event, it's clear this should have been listed at Votes for Deletion instead of deleted outright, given the amount of disagreement over the issue, so please proceed with Poolad Kaf however you see fit. gaol
[edit source]Hi, inas. Regarding this edit: My impression from reading up on the subject is that both "jail" and "gaol" are widely used and understood in the UK ("gaol" perhaps being more common in Ireland, and distinctly more common in Australia), with the "jail" spelling becoming widespread apparently due to the influence of Monopoly, of all things. =) (WT-en) LtPowers 10:16, 31 July 2009 (EDT)
- Okay; my impression was that gaol was no longer a particularly British spelling, but I don't know from firsthand evidence or anything. (WT-en) LtPowers 21:35, 1 August 2009 (EDT)

[edit source]Is it just me or is the Sydney district of totally white like the background color? The legend in the article shows it should be gray... (WT-en) Texugo 01:50, 11 August 2009 (EDT)
- It isn't just you. The regions that weren't defined when I drew the map were omitted. I drew the map to help the discussion along, but figured it may as well go on the article page in the absnce of anything else. I'll get back to the couple of missing regions when Sydney districts are mapped and done. The legend in the article and the colors were added after I created the map. --(WT-en) inas 02:38, 11 August 2009 (EDT)

Sydney ferries
[edit source]Hi - I've been giving some thought to how best to feature Sydney Ferries and the harbour in their own article, along the lines of your suggestions at Talk:Sydney. I was thinking of an itinerary article for a couple of the key ferry services, starting with say, Quay -> Parra, and Quay -> Manly, but maybe progressing to a few others. The article would cover the trip from Circular Quay, contain a list of sights and stops to look out for along the way (with photos and a map, maybe), and reference the appropriate articles for the stops along the way, if people want to get off and look around. It could substitute for the commentary on a harbour cruise, and give people a day out on the harbour. I also could be quite unique, as I haven't seen it done before. It gives more focus to the ferries than just "you can take xyz ferry from A to B", type text. WDYT? --(WT-en) inas 19:25, 24 August 2009 (EDT)
- Good idea. I have tried an itinerary before for Sydney including ferries but it's not yet finished. An in-article itinerary is more than permissible and would be a good way to fill out the page. I'll keep mine going because it is more than just ferry rides. (WT-en) JRG 08:02, 27 August 2009 (EDT)

Whitestoneinns
[edit source]I think you're being a little harsh on User:(WT-en) Whitestoneinns's edits -- sure, his listings are touty, but that calls for blanking or rewriting the description, not the entire hotel. (WT-en) Jpatokal 07:53, 17 September 2009 (EDT)
- I only reverted the entries containing first person pronouns. It is a clearly set out part of our polocy, which is simple to follow, and fairly obvious. I noted that in the reversion. If Whiestoneinn, or anyone else wants to rewrite the entires to not refer to "our hotel", then the wiki thing makes that easy to do. If it was one person adding one entry for a hotel, I'm happy to go and edit it - like I did for around 30 others today. But this is mass additions, all touting in the same language. Does anybody here really have the level of enthusaism for de-touting required for that? Chances are he is getting paid or there is some commercial basis for adding the multiple entries. Really, why should we volunteer time to tidy them up for him/her. That is their job. --(WT-en) inas 08:05, 17 September 2009 (EDT)

Queensland
[edit source]Hi Inas,
Thanks for your comments on the Queensland edits. I want to update the Regions and Towns/Cities section with the content I used earlier. How do you recommend displaying this content? I am also editing the other sections of the Queensland page today, would love your feedback on this and how I can improve it.
Thanks again,
Kane
Hi again,
Great, thanks for the feedback. I will go over the regions section again and put it on the discussion board and get some feedback. Just a few other questions.
a) I have linked to existing internal pages witin Wikivoyage but they still how up red as read links? How do I override the standard [[]] linking to make sure it goes to the correct page?
b) Are you familiar which the process to getting a state map with the colour coded regions?
Appreciate all your help! :)
Thanks,
Kane

Strong words
[edit source]Hi Inas! I reworked this year the Germany stay safe and respect section several times. I wanted to ask you if you could have a look on the article sections as you have a good feeling for strong words and connotations. Hi Inas! User Burmesedays has done an excellent job in splitting up the Gili Islands in three seperate articles to allow an article for every island. Maps, listings etc. are their but if i dare to ask if you might have a reread what is missing so that maybe we can bring Gili Trawangan to starnom. As most texts are splitted it would be great to know what we missed. Thank you in advance for this distraction. (WT-en) jan 07:31, 25 February 2010 (EST)
- Please dare.. The article reads nicely, and has good information. I fixed a couple of spelling mistakes, and I'm still thinking of the right word to use instead of circumvent. Starnom or not, it is great work. --(WT-en) inas 17:19, 25 February 2010 (EST)
- Ha! Circumvent is so wrong :). Please forgive the odd bit of strangeness left over from the previous single Gili Islands article. I mashed it all up in a bit of a hurry. Quite happy with the result though, and when Gili Air is finished (today I hope), we will have four decent guides, instead of just one OK article. And, as you correctly feared it is called Lightening Fast :). I even spelt it "correctly" as Lightning on the map. Thanks for the once over, much appreciated. Do feel free to also have a look at the parent article and Gili Meno (finished) and Gili Air (soon to be so). --(WT-en) Burmesedays 21:07, 25 February 2010 (EST)

[edit source]I must say your user page is one of the more interesting I have come across :). Having read User:(WT-en) Inas#My_politics, I wanted to make sure you had seen the latest here? --(WT-en) Burmesedays 22:53, 28 March 2010 (EDT)
- Yes. It is an odd response on so many levels. Continuing to demonstrate a lack of understanding of what makes WT tick. It is almost as if they value the visits and edits of the marketers and people searching for them as much as they value the travel guide contributions. --(WT-en) inas 06:12, 29 March 2010 (EDT)
- Odd, yes I agree. But for now at least, I would prefer to focus upon the fact that they are implementing the change.--(WT-en) Burmesedays 06:24, 29 March 2010 (EDT)
- Possibly - but it is just one change. During which we saw IB assert their authority over the site and the community shoot itself in its collective foot. --(WT-en) inas 16:27, 29 March 2010 (EDT)
- (Not the first time reading some history here) The community certainly shot itself in the foot, but that's not IB's fault. In the short time I have been here and reading some history, the WT community is not exactly renowned for a coordinated approach. Way too much talking and way too little action. Anyway, isn't this the issue that we pushed to the top of the list for tech action? In that sense I would say it is more than "..... just one change". It took a while and it could still not happen (although that is hard to imagine), but let's try to be positive for once. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 22:18, 29 March 2010 (EDT)
- I'm very impressed you can find positive in there - but yes, certainly not 100% fault to IB. My point about one change, is both the community and IB are going to have to make additional changes in policy and software to keep WT on-track. I'll be interested to see how long the change takes to implement, and their approach to responses subsequently --(WT-en) inas 23:06, 29 March 2010 (EDT)
Sydney City East / Kings Cross area
[edit source]Hi Inas. I've noticed your work on the City East District in Sydney. This is where I live and I have a lot to contribute here, but I have a couple of suggestions on the boundaries and name. First, I think the whole area around Kings Cross (which includes Potts Point, Elizabeth Bay and Rushcutters Bay) needs to be grouped together. The actual postal address of most of the bars, restaurants and guest houses in Kings Cross are actually either Potts Point or Elizabeth Bay (even a few have Rushcutters). So I suggest we include those 3 areas into City East. THe second thing is the name. I think that Inner East might be a better name, as I don't think many Sydneysiders would refer to areas like Kings Cross and Paddington as part of the "city". More likely they would think of them as the inner part of the Eastern Suburbs. What do you think? I'll go ahead and start contributing to the page. Please let me know if you do/don't agree with my suggestions. Cheers (WT-en) Lturner 07:29, 18 April 2010 (EDT).
- Hi. There is endless discussion and opinions on this. Inner East v Eastern subs, etc. The area is part of the City of Sydney LGA, so although it isn't commonly referred to as that, it clearly distinguishes it from the Eastern Subs. Anyway, this isn't really a discussion to be had on my talk page. Please join in at Talk:Sydney where the more opinions on districts the better... And please keep up the contributions. --(WT-en) inas 08:42, 19 April 2010 (EDT)

I am by no means suggesting this should replace the existing at this time, I just quickly cobbled it together for discussion purposes. WA state map
[edit source]Hi there. If you have any more comments on the WA state map (eg airports?), please try to make them today as I am about about to fix the Albany highway colour. Be good to get any more fixes done in one hit. Cheers. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 20:51, 21 April 2010 (EDT)
- Hi -
- Highway 1 up to Port Headland, and around to Albany and Esperance, isn't a National Highway. So, it shouldn't use the green shield, but the white one.
- The Albany Highway should be red - its is a main, sealed road.
- The road to Exmouth should be red - again, it is main and sealed.
- I still don't understand the reasoning for where the airports are marked. If they are just for interstate flights, then Kalgoorlie with its one flight to Melbourne a week, doesn't really rate higher than Kunnunurra with its daily to Darwin. If it is major scheduled jet services, then at least Geraldton, Albany, Karratha, should be on there.
- I'm not sure the town is commonly known as Kalgoorlie-Boulder. Maybe the airport is, but the town is just Kalgoorlie.
- The National Park and Ningaloo may be better with a blue shaded area, than just a dot. Maybe Shark Bay doesn't even need a dot, being next to the bay it is apparent.
- I'd still think that we may need more work on our cities list. I think Karratha is more worth a mention than Port Headland, but these decisions are always a little arbitary. --(WT-en) inas 21:46, 21 April 2010 (EDT)
- I will copy to this to Talk:Perth. Thanks for all that, just a few comments:
- It is normal on any WT country or region to differentiate between roads. Red does not mean sealed and yellow unsealed. In a country with decent roads, red would normally simply super big sealed roads such as main highways, and yellow another main road of less importance.
- Airports. Nothing to stop more being on there and I will add.
- Our article is called Kalgoorlie-Boulder. If you think that article should renamed Kalgoorlie, then I would agree with you.
- Blue dots are used universally at WT to mark an OD and I would be reluctant to go against that standard.
- Karratha can be added to the map and I will do so. There is nothing to say that only listed cities should be on the map. As long as all the listed ones are, then the map complies with our star map standard. Others can be added and nearly always are, by me at least. I already added Derby and Eucla which do even have articles!--(WT-en) Burmesedays 03:40, 22 April 2010 (EDT)
- I will copy to this to Talk:Perth. Thanks for all that, just a few comments:

Nimbin
[edit source]I can accept the policy of no links, but after veiwing the Nimbin site after posting the above message, looks like you as administrator have gone in and edited out any usefull infomation that I have posted. So is that the punishment of speaking up ? So I went in and removed all the infomation that I have posted for Nimbin, as it seems that usefull infomation is not what you are looking for, just warm & fuzzy stuff. The whole point of this site means nothing if you want infomation posted by people that probably have never been there, and more important is that you are putting tourist's at risk by providing false infomation. For the record Nimbin can be a dangerous place for the unsuspecting tourist, so be it on your own head next time people get assulted, robbed, ripped off after following your infomation (or lack of it). Cheers manalifinger

[edit source]Out of curiosity, is your recent spate of copyedits motivated by scripts that you're running to find errors, or are you simply on a mad tear through various articles? I've been meaning to put together some scripts to find articles with missing "isPartOf" tags, missing "http:", etc, but if you've beat me to it then suddenly my todo list is one item smaller :) -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 01:31, 3 June 2010 (EDT)
- I've had a script for a while, which catches a whole swag of errors with articles, although I've only started running it again in the last couple of days after a break for a while. Some of the details of what it does are (WT-en) here. The actual work is done by an horrendous 2000 lines of perl which is very much a hack, but it is reasonably effective. I'm happy (although slightly embarrassed) to share if anyone is interested. --(WT-en) inas 01:41, 3 June 2010 (EDT)
- Wow, your script is ridiculously encompassing of problem areas. Can it also generate reports similar to User:(WT-en) Nicolas1981/Syntax_checks/url-with-no-http? My thought was to try to get something like Nicolas1981's scripts running again (I've got a full mirror of the site running locally) so that the cleanup work could be distributed amongst any interested users, but I'd rather not duplicate work that someone else has already done. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 16:30, 3 June 2010 (EDT)
- Yes, it can easily duplicate that, and comes with a free set of steak knives. In fact for that particular problem (url with no http) it fixes the error in 100% of cases, and could run entirely automated, so I'd hate to think of Wikivoyagers wasting their time on doing that. For missing IsPartOf expressions, it is more intelligent than Nicolas1981's check, in that it understands articles types, and won't generate errors on itineraries, travel topics and phrasebooks (in fact it detects when they are present on these article types).
- The most promising part is the tout checking part, where it detects around 200 phrases and first party pronouns used by touts. That is the part that could really do with a manual review, because sometimes real travellers have a tendency to write in a similar style. --(WT-en) inas 19:04, 3 June 2010 (EDT)
- I don't regularly use Perl so I'm not sure I'd be any help in coding or code reviewing, but if there's anything I can do to help out with this let me know. It sounds like I can cross the "build Wikivoyage validation scripts" tasks off of my TODO. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 19:24, 3 June 2010 (EDT)
- I mean the touting articles that are detected need manual review, for example it picks out phrases like our <> is the best, which 99% of the time is a tout but sometimes there are some weird constructions which are valid. I'll put up a sample.. --(WT-en) inas 19:35, 3 June 2010 (EDT)
A sample of the report produced when running in "report" mode, is (WT-en) here. I think for the next step, I'll just make it list the articles that it can't fix automatically, there isn't much point making public a list of things it can fix automatically. Things like removing links are things that probably can't be done automatically - there are a few examples of that in the current sample. --(WT-en) inas 17:30, 6 June 2010 (EDT)
- Do you want any feedback on pages that were fixed as a result of your scripts, or is it easiest to just re-run the scripts on a regular basis to automatically pick up changes? This edit had its basis in one of your reports, and I suspect many more may follow. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 23:28, 7 June 2010 (EDT)
- It is easy enough to rerun the scripts on a regular basis if there is regular activity, and much easier than having to remove the things that are checked. Will there come a time when they only need to be run over Recent Changes? I hope so. --(WT-en) inas 23:40, 7 June 2010 (EDT)
"Robust"
[edit source]That is such a good word :). I really do have a large soft spot for Sydney, and it would be great to get some momentum behind this complex districting task. On a few occasions lately (not only at Sydney) I have been perhaps been a little too robust with comments. Sometimes the concensus building process just wears me down and gets more than a little frustrating. Cheers. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 22:30, 6 June 2010 (EDT)

Coffee
[edit source]Why did you move a section on coffee to "Eat" instead of "Drink"? (WT-en) LtPowers 08:26, 15 December 2010 (EST)

Hi Inas, I thought you might think the list of nearby airports was more info than required. Port Lincoln used to be (and I assume is more so now) a very popular GA (general aviation) destination. That is I believe part of what makes it the states (listed) 2nd most active airport. BTY I am surprised by that statistic as I would have thought Parafield aerodrome or the nearby RAAF Base Edinburgh (25km north of Adelaide) would have been busier. Maybe pure GA and Air Force bases are excluded from such lists. So that is why I put in that airfield and distance detail. A lot of visitors come in by GA and they also visit other nearby airports. Private lic pilots use it as a recreational flying destination and also to get their hours and over water ratings improved. Potential commercial pilots use it for similar reasons. It does not bother me if the (airfield and distance) info is not in the article but I thought in the instance of Port Lincoln it was of potential value to the traveller. Hope you are keeping well and BTY great work on developing that article and nearby YP. I have been making some minor contributions as I know the area, however I have not been there for quite a while. (WT-en) felix 08:20, 15 January 2011 (EST)
- But why would a GA pilot going to Pt Lincoln not just fly there? What is the benefit of an airport 200km to a ga pilot visiting pt lincoln? --(WT-en) inas 14:43, 16 January 2011 (EST)
- Some of those airports are on the way there from Adelaide,(Minlaton and Yorketown). Some are nearby (Wudinna and Lock). Cowell is on the way down from Port Augusta. Pt Augusta is the nearest nearby regional city (aside from Whyalla which is bigger) and is at the head of the Gulf to the north. GA and recreational pilots do not necessarily just go to the one destination alone, nor do their flights necessarily originate solely from the capital city of Adelaide. However, like I said, it does not bother me if the info is in there or not. In regard to Pt Augusta -- tourism wise it is really just a cross roads for the north of the State, the Flinders Ranges, west to Ceduna, or back to the south to Yorke Pen or Adelaide. Otherwise it is best avoided both by aircraft and road vehicles and has few redeeming features. I only included it in the list as it was the only other nearby airport of significant. You cannot fly Pt Lincoln-Pt Augusta except by GA as all the scheduled services hub through ADL. The detail in this reply is only to let you know why I put the info in the article. As to it being valid article content--6 of one, half dozen of the other as far as I am concerned. It is out of the article now, and if you do not feel like putting it back in then leave it out, no problem with me. If doing articles on the more northern regions you might want to give the matter more consideration though as the info is more important both for tourism movements and for emergencies. Knowing the location of a certified airstrip can be critically important as the RFDS will not land on a non-certified strip. Also some tourism activities are arranged around a fly in or a fly out by a charter op rather than a scheduled service. I have organised them myself in those more northern regions. Both the tourism trips and the emergency airlift flights.(WT-en) felix 16:27, 16 January 2011 (EST)
- Lets put the regional GA airstrips in the Eyre Peninsula article then. I'd be really interested in developing an article on GA flying in Australia overall, because it is quite a specialised travel topic. --(WT-en) inas 17:11, 16 January 2011 (EST)

No alphanum in Sydney yet - maybe already?
[edit source]Not without it's own F6 route 1, M1 and other confusions...but have a look at these images of A1 route signs displayed on route 1:
- Yeah - I think you know the deal. All the signs have alphanum, but just about all of them are covered, except for the M1, and M7. There are a few examples which avid road-watchers delight in picking up, where the coverplates are missing or whatever, but it is no use navigating by alphanums in Sydney. None of these RTA mistakes would be encountered by anyone driving from the airport to Wollongong, anyway. The Princes Hwy at the airport is unnumbered, then becomes metroad 1 until Waterfall (numbered on every street sign), then signposted as national route 1 at the start of the southern freeway, and again at the start of Mt Ousley Rd. --(WT-en) inas 22:28, 24 January 2011 (EST)
- The RTA is a mysterious beast...I wonder why they have the A1 signs up on the road if it is not A1 and then why on earth they cover them if it is. Should have just stuck with the '1', it has worked fine for decades. Anyway I don't think it would confuse people too much, a sign saying Woolongong is pretty clear and I recall they are visible from the outset at SKS. Your recent adjusting edit covers it well now. cheers (WT-en) felix 01:30, 25 January 2011 (EST)
- The RTA have an alphanumeric numbering plan for NSW, so for the last decade or so everytime they install a sign they put the alphanum on it, but put a coverplate over it, either with the state numbering, or the metroad numbering, or a blank. However, on some very rare occasions on obscure signs they forget, or they fall off or something. This is where the road-watching freaks come in to photograph it and post it online. I guess the plan goes that one day when the number of signs reaches a crital mass, they can just unveil them without having to replace every sign in the state. The only deliberate exceptions I know of are the M1 north from the airport, and the M7, and the new Albury bypass. Road freaky people probably know more. --(WT-en) inas 02:09, 25 January 2011 (EST)
- Planes trains and automobiles ... and road signs...oh dear, LOL now. Must have too much time on their hands. As for the antics of the RTA...maybe they should concentrate on cleaning up road kills and filling in potholes. This is not an A1, more a D(-). Maybe this trouble with route 1 started when they started messing with the established idea of it circumnavigating the coast. Where I live we have very few roads, and not many signs so this all comes as a bit of a surprise to me. cheers and thanks for your thoughts on the matter. (WT-en) felix 04:24, 25 January 2011 (EST)
Routebox script
[edit source]Hi, is there a page where I can learn how to create a script? I could try to make the routebox script myself. (WT-en) Sumone10154 18:01, 26 January 2011 (EST)
- There is no magic, you have to code the page downloads, the parsing, and the resulting edits. Personally, the quickest and easiest way I find to write short one-off scripts scripts is to use a firefox module like Its All Text. That module can call any script you write in most any language you can write it in. So then it is just a matter of editing every page you want to update in multiple tabs, processing them and checking the results. If you are familiar with a particular programming language, there can be extensions to make using mediawiki easier.
- If you want more info, wikipedia has multiple guides and multiple examples of scripts for mediawiki. Many work with wikivoyage too.
- I will get around to writing the routebox script (I haven't forgotten) as soon as real life/real work permits. --(WT-en) inas 18:43, 26 January 2011 (EST)

Tours link on Eiffel Tower tours
[edit source]Hi Inas. I believe that the post that I made adds value to visitors. I just can't get it right. Is the problem that link and text about Eiffel Tower tours cannot be posted at all, or the issue is, they must be posted somewhere else? Would you please advise? Hope to hear from you soon. --(WT-en) Bogifan 20:37, 6 November 2011 (EST)
- Hi, (WT-en) Bogifan. Welcome to Wikivoyage. Our policy on tours, which you are welcome to read, says (essentially) that we don't allow tour listings when the visitor could accomplish the same thing by themselves. This is to keep our guides concise, and provide the best information to the self-guided traveller, who most needs the guide! So, I believe your tour to the Eiffel tower doesn't qualify for a listing. If it allows access to areas of the tower that can't be accessed by the general public, for example, then it may. --(WT-en) inas 21:27, 6 November 2011 (EST)
- All right, I've got it. Thank you for your quick answer. --(WT-en) Bogifan 08:05, 7 November 2011 (EST)

Hello Ian and welcome to your talk page on the brand new and dripping wet English language version of Wikivoyage!
At the risk of being accused of "trying to teach my Grandmother to suck eggs" (grin):
Wikivoyage is a project with the aim to create a free, up-to-date, and reliable world-wide travel guide, and it is based on an association with the same name: Wikivoyage e.V.
To get a clearer idea about Wikivoyage and how it works, have a look at the community policies and the FAQ section. It may also be useful to read the Copyleft page where you can find more information about our license. The part of Wikivoyage called Wikivoyage General helps Wikivoyagers to organize and discuss language independent topics. If you want to find more information related to potential language versions, have a look at the language version discussions page. "How to start a new language version" will help you plunge forward.
If you understand their languages, it might be interesting to have a look at the German or the Italian language versions of Wikivoyage, as those are the long established language versions and there you will have an opportunity to discover what the project and its articles look like. The launch of the English Language version is imminent. The images that are used within our articles are at Wikivoyage Shared.
Our policies, guidelines and Manual of style may be a bit different to other Wiki's you've worked on.
If you need more information or you have questions that have not been answered in the help pages, please do not hesitate to write a post in the Travellers' Pub or to ask me directly.
Reverting is easy but editing is better!
[edit source]However, if you had carefully read the text (I did several times because of the mixture of AM/PM and 24 hour time formats) you would notice that the text you have reverted to then contained a mixture. For example: "Because of this arrangement, with accommodation providing a lift at 18:30, dinner commences at this time. For lunch, Thompson's Store sells hamburgers around $8 each 11AM-2PM...". It really doesn't matter whether you use one system or another, but our policy is not to use a mixture in the same article. I know it takes a lot more work to go and actually edit rather than hit the revert key, but it might be better to restore a consistent use of the 24 hour clock (together with the other improvements I made). If you wish to change the article to using the AM/PM system, then there's nothing wrong with that - but you will need to do that by editing so that the article will qualify for Star status.
If you read our policy at Units you will see we recommend using a non-breaking space to separate most units from their measurement.
PS: Both pages are now on my watch list so if you think a reply is necessary, please reply either here or on the article's discussion page. Thanks! -- Alice✉ 22:21, 3 January 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for your note. As you know, I've pretty much built the article from stretch in the past few days, and I'm still working on it. By all means, please make improvements, but please give me a chance to refine it before making unnecessary changes all over the place. There are a thousand other articles on the site that could do with your copyediting right now. All the times on Lord Howe are AM/PM. It is the time used in the article. Please leave them as AM/PM. In future if you are going to make controversial changes, I'd suggest making them in separate edits. --Inas (talk) 22:24, 3 January 2013 (UTC)
- 2 suggestions:
- 1) Consider using a templated notice if you're making extensive edits to an article over a period (or, alternatively building the article in your own user space - that's what I do here, for example: User:Alice/Kitchen/English language varieties). That way you lessen the risk of those frustrating and wasteful edit conflicts.
- 2) Examine what regular editors are actually doing before you jump to conclusions. Always go over all the changes you will make by hitting the revert button. As I exampled above, as well as changing the 24 hour format to AM/PM, you also (inadvertently?) introduced breaches of our MoS. As I've already said, there's nothing wrong with changing ALL of the 24 hour formats to AM/PM - particularly when that's the prevalent system in use on Lord Howe. But only changing some of the time formats by using a sloppy and lazy revert is simply not justifiable.
- Your advice about making controversial edits in separate stages is good; however, making edits to ensure an article follows our MoS will rarely fall into that category. I will not make any more edits for a while to Lord Howe if you would prefer that. -- Alice✉ 22:37, 3 January 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks. I'm very aware of the nature of your edits. I'm always reluctant to hit the revert key if it can be avoided, but there was little in the way of changes you made that won't fall into place when the listings are templated. --Inas (talk) 22:46, 3 January 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for being understanding. Some of our policies can tedious and infuriating and I hope we can work together to improve them. (In Singapore there are a great many rules that people hate but I think it is the better way to change the rules until they are sensible rather than flout them as is seen in many of Singapore's neighbouring states). I would like to adopt the 24 hour time clock universally on all articles on Wikivoyage and make the changes I have just suggested on the policy discussion page to our unit conversion policy here on Wikivoyage. -- Alice✉ 00:03, 4 January 2013 (UTC)
- I know. However, you should be careful not to change the units by stealth in combination with other edits. We've had people leave the project entirely because of disagreements spelling and metric conversions, and ultimately, it is of very little consequence. There are also many policies (such as unit conversion) that are universally ignored. Tagging one article, when there are 15,000 others that have unconverted units really doesn't achieve that much. --Inas (talk) 00:18, 4 January 2013 (UTC)
- I think you're being a little unfair here and ignoring the context. Had you spent a few microseconds examining all the edits I made and then either editing in an MoS compliant way or asking me on the article's discussion page excactly why I'd been silly enough to add those non-breaking spaces, then there would have been no need to revert. Reverting is really only for vandalism or extreme cases. If something is wrong (in this case, you thought times given in the 24 hour clock) then deal with just the things that you think are wrong. Please don't think I'm picking on you or "your" articles. I put the templates in because you seemed to have consecutively missed the very thing you seemed to be complaining about in your reversion edit summary: inconsistent time formats and I didn't want to pour petrol on the flames by editing an article that I had just said I wouldn't edit again for a while. Happy New Year! -- Alice✉ 01:01, 4 January 2013 (UTC)
- I'm sorry. Your edit contained several MoS mistakes. It switched the time standard unnecessarily. I've fixed the errors you highlighted in your tagging episode, except for one which I have raised on the appropriate policy page. Thanks. --Inas (talk) 01:09, 4 January 2013 (UTC)
- I still don't know how it happened but I caused a problem when I made this edit, which inadvertently lost an entire section as well as other phrases: http://en.wikivoyage.org/w/index.php?title=Lord_Howe_Island&diff=next&oldid=2057463 I am heartily sorry for this and still do not know how it happened; I will double check with diffs when I make edits in future, this really is very worrying and perturbing. Thus, before I made this later edit our Lord Howe Island article had a mixture of time formats (my fault). I can see now that in one instance I mistakenly used a semi-colon instead of a colon with this edit but I fail to see any other MoS mistake I introduced. I am genuinely eager to learn from any MoS mistake I may have made, so please take the time to spell out the other "several MoS mistakes" I made so that I can try and avoid them in future; I can assure you that your analysis will not be wasted and I will try my utmost to learn from it and implement it in future edits I make. -- Alice✉ 01:32, 4 January 2013 (UTC)

Hi - Both the colon and the semi-colon aren't used in the listing format. Have a look at a star article, like Singapore to see how the listing format is typically laid out. And while we are dwelling on the pedantry, is there a particular reason why you think post office should be capitalised? --Inas (talk) 03:06, 4 January 2013 (UTC)
- I assumed that in the hyphenated version of "post-office" the editor was actually writing about a physical building that contained an Australia Post Community Postal Agent (CPA), or Licensed Post Office (LPO) or, alternatively, a Franchised Post Office. In Australian English, should it be hyphenated?
- That said, I do now think that, in this context and with the Wikimedia servers located in the US where the USPS regards "Post Office" as a trademark (https://tools.usps.com/go/POLocatorAction!input.action), it's better to neither capitalise nor hyphenate it. What do you think? -- Alice✉ 06:27, 4 January 2013 (UTC)
- Post office should be capitalised where it is used as a proper noun, but not when used generically. It should by hyphenated when saying something like post-office building, where hyphenation is required for meaning, but I think not otherwise. --Inas (talk) 09:58, 4 January 2013 (UTC)
- Agreed; and Alice, none of those items should be capped just because they're commonly abbreviated in caps – unless they're a proper name (Sandy Hills Post Office, vs is there a post office at Sandy Hills?). Tony (talk) 11:52, 13 January 2013 (UTC)

Odd IP
[edit source]User:75.36.47.40 - is this something to be concerned about? --Rschen7754 10:05, 15 January 2013 (UTC)
- Let us see. --Inas (talk) 10:12, 15 January 2013 (UTC)
- Okay, I've got another question - is there a central place to report vandals to admins? --Rschen7754 11:09, 15 January 2013 (UTC)

LGBT
[edit source]FYI, a fellow Wikivoyager plunged forward and created the Wikivoyage:LGBT Expedition. The discussion in the pub has been moved to the expedition's talk page. -- Sapphire (talk) 19:33, 16 January 2013 (UTC)
Ian, you just got the 25th supportive vote as checkuser, so you reached the target. Congratulation! Are you going to Meta yourself and start the process? Your work is needed more than ever. Regards, jan (talk) 20:38, 17 January 2013 (UTC)
- Hi, and thanks. No, I'm going to hold off for a week or so, and then make sure that we've reached a consensus that this is a function that we want to have locally - because in general stewards don't perform this function when there are local CUs. It is one or the other. Once the launch phase is complete, I'll ensure that we have consensus for this, and then we can move forward. --Inas (talk) 21:39, 17 January 2013 (UTC)
- Very sage.
- If we are serious (rather than hypocritical) in saying that increasing levels of "bit access" just involves taking on more menial and boring tasks that someone has to do rather than pandering to an ego trip why ever would you dispense with the services of more than 40 experienced, competent stewards that are above the fray and immune from accusations of having a personal axe to grind? All I've heard so far is that we can spot the IBobbleheads faster and ban/block their incarnations quicker, but is that really so important and vital? I really haven't heard a rational argument yet for localising this function but I'm open to persuasion if somebody wants to clarify what the advantage(s) for our project is (are)... -- Alice✉ 00:24, 18 January 2013 (UTC)
- It is just one single argument: We are a mature community, and we're capable of managing this aspect of our wiki ourselves. Anyway, we'll see what people think in due course. --Inas (talk) 00:48, 18 January 2013 (UTC)
Much better! My compliments on a vivid passage!
Are you aware of the double entendre in some varieties of English? -- Alice✉ 07:53, 25 January 2013 (UTC)
Admin process
[edit source]I think the general discussion is really good that it has worked out that way. I really think it is better to have been part of the blotch that may have helped formulate a clearer admin policy, than to have had a clean nomination. I have no problem about waiting if someone really wants to take issue... But at least the other two more obvious no goers have clarified a clearer intro/guideline. As for contributing, sheesh, I keep finding such useless articles about things in some areas I know quite a lot about, it looks like there is a lot to do... sats (talk) 23:53, 7 February 2013 (UTC)
What was the rationale for removing "The 4nn is a mobile prefix, not an "area code", as such and the second and third digits (the nn part) denotes the original mobile network assigned.", please? -- Alice✉ 21:49, 9 February 2013 (UTC)
- Hi Alice. The primary purpose of my edit, was to revert the additions to the policy that you added that were inconsistent with the actual policy.
My secondary rationale was to keep the section as focussed and accurate as possible. I removed what
- isn't required knowledge for formatting numbers
- is potentially misleading, because it suggests a link between current mobile numbers and current carriers, when such a link does not exist. MNP has existed in AU for quite some time. Without explaining its intricacies (that are no doubt out of scope) it is deficient. --Inas (talk) 22:46, 9 February 2013 (UTC)
Accounts merged
[edit source]I've merged your (WT-en) Inas contributions to this account. In order to allow the old user page to be moved over I've put your current user page (and its talk page) at User:Inas/Saved, so you'll need to manually move/merge things to get the talk page and user page how you want it. -- Ryan • (talk) • 15:42, 5 March 2013 (UTC)
