Khammam (and the surrounding Khammam District) is in the Telangana state of Southern India. It gets its name from "stambhadri" which became "kambham" and the British Raj used to call the place "Khammam Mettu". The municipal corporation offers the small town experience with easy accessibility to modern amenities and entertainment.

Khammam is 200 km from Hyderabad by road and a slightly longer rail journey at 250 km. Hyderabad to Suryapet is 135 km and then Suryapet to Khammam another 65 km.

By car

Suryapet on National Highway 9 serves as a major connecting point to Khammam - especially for travellers arriving from Hyderabad. People arriving from Vijayawada can come to Khammam via Kodad on National Highway 9. The other connections are Warangal and Bhadrachalam via Kothagudem, Palawancha.

By train

Khammam station (code: KMT) lies on the main north-south national train line which implies a well connected route and plenty of trains. Vijayawada is the closest major railway station which has the best rail connections to all major cities in the country. There are trains every hour to Vijayawada and Warangal every hour in peak times.

By bus

Hyderabad, Bhadrachalam, Kothagudem, Palawancha, Wyra and Suryapet are very well connected by buses to Khammam. You can get a bus every 15 minutes or so from these destinations to Khammam. There are also buses to Warangal and Vijayawada which are quite rarely used because of the rail connection.

By auto rickshaw

Auto rickshaws are the primary transport vehicles available for public to get around Khammam. In the main routes you could share an auto with other passengers for ₹10 or less. If you want to go to the internal areas you have to bargain for a price.Any place in Khammam boundaries shouldn't exceed the prices of ₹40 for an individual and ₹60 for a group.

By bus

The newly introduced city buses roam on the main roads and connect to some suburban villages outside Khammam. The buses are quite cheap but there are very less buses and the schedule is quite erratic.

By taxi

Taxis are quite rare and are used only if you have plans to visit other places in Khammam District. There are some travel agencies near the main bus stand which allow you to hire a car.

  • 1 Khammam Fort (Khammam Khilla (Telugu: ఖమ్మం ఖిళ్ళా )). This fort was built by Kakatiya rulers and was managed and extended by Nizam. It offers a nice view of Khammam town. There are steps constructed to facilitate climbing.

  • 2 Narasimha Swamy Temple (Narasimha swami gudi (Telugu: నరసింహస్వామి గుడి )). This temple of the "Narasimha Swami" deity is quite famous and also the reason for the name of "Khammam". On a hill top, it offers nice views especially in the evenings. The hill top is accessible by car.

  • Khammam has good quality cinemas all over the town. Tirumala Theatre, Srinivasa Theatre, Vinoda Theatre, Nartaki to name a few. Mostly Telugu and Hindi movies will be shown.
  • 1 Danavaigudem Park, Danavaigudem. Danavaigudem Park is a picnic spot on the banks of Munneru river. You can check out the drinking water supply plant here, and you could also have a nice walk crossing the river on the dam, depending on the flow conditions.
  • 2 Tank Bund (ParkStreet). An evening at Tankbund near sequel resorts is a good pastime.This place is also used as walkers park in the morning.

  • 1 Aziz Galli. Aziz galli is quite famous among young women for getting their dresses tailor made. This shopping street also allows you to buy small accessories for women. It also includes a whole sale market for fancy items.
  • 2 Gandhi Chowk. The centre for jewellery market.
  • Joy Alukkas Jewellery Shop.
  • Kalaniketan.

  • 3 Kaman Bazaar. Famous for shopping clothes, bangles and footwear.
  • 4 Kaspa Bazaar. General stores and fruit market.
  • 5 Wyra road (From ZP centre head towards bus stand on the right side of Wyra road). This road has brand outlets of Pepe, Reebok, Adidas and Reliance Trendz.

Eat

  • Haveli restaurant on Wyra Road is quite famous and almost occupies a dominant position among eateries in Khammam. Try Tawa Fish, Chilli Prawns and Tawa Chicken in the Non-Veg Menu. Also try Menthi Chaman with Naans in the Veg Menu. Boneless Chicken Biryani and Fish Biryani is also good.
  • Ishta is another restaurant which is good.
  • Kaveri which is near Petrol Bunk Bus stand is quite old and had a reputation for maintaining standards in food.
  • Mirchi Bajji and Jelabi is very famous at Pavilion ground and near Railway station.
  • Cutlet and PaniPuri is very famous at SBI Bank Wyra Raod and PIM Catholic .
  • Roadside tiffin vendors are available all over the town. These tiffins are really cheap and delicious. A must try.

  • 1 Krishna Bar and Restaurant, +91 874 222-2512. Locally famous joint for people who booze. A lot of delicious snacks are served with drinks. Their Chicken Biryani costs ₹140.
