Part Deux

[edit]

(NPP action) This isn't a suitable {{r from subtitle alone}}, since an intitle search shows another article (I Love the '90s: Part Deux) and five redirects with the same subtitle. It shouldn't be made into a disambiguation page, since those are all partial title matches. It shouldn't be redirected to Part Two, since it's not mentioned there (and the partial title matches shouldn't be added). That just leaves deletion. jlwoodwa (talk) 23:36, 25 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Not mentioned at target; appears at the T-Bone disambiguation page and is linked from Frost_(rapper)#Career, where the only information is that Frost was the voice actor for this character, but no in-universe content. Not sure if this warrants a retarget. 1234qwer1234qwer4 23:21, 11 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was delete. This character is commonly known simply as Big Smoke (Grand Theft Auto), not as "Melvin". The Melvin Harris (1930 – 2004) biography, about a British author, broadcaster, researcher and skeptic, was deleted as a copyright violation. wbm1058 (talk) 11:48, 10 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

None of the content mentioning "Melvin Harris" on the English Wikipedia seems to be about this character. 1234qwer1234qwer4 23:43, 11 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Keep His name is mentioned in the game's credits. Hansen Sebastian (Talk) 01:26, 12 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
How does that help a reader find any content on it (or find out that we don't have what they are looking for), though? 1234qwer1234qwer4 01:37, 12 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Isn't it enough that the game mentions his name without having to read it? There's also the game's booklet. Hansen Sebastian (Talk) 02:40, 12 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Without having to read what? If you think this merits a mention in the article, then go ahead, but in the current state a reader will be directed to an article where they won't find what they are looking for, which is information on the topic of their search term. 1234qwer1234qwer4 03:17, 12 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was retarget Lance Wilson, and delete Lance "Ryder" Wilson.

Feel free to boldly create redirects of any of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas's over 400 speaking actors' characters to the Wikipedia biographies of the actors, such as T-Bone MendezFrost (rapper) or Lance "Ryder" WilsonMC Eiht, if the role is mentioned in their bio. If this practice proves to be controversial, we can always have a future RfD to obtain a clearer consensus on that matter. wbm1058 (talk) 17:33, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Not mentioned at target. Three unrelated people are mentioned at Withcott#History, I_Go_Back#Content, and 1990_Texas_Longhorns_football_team#Personnel (as well as some mentions of a Lance Wilson-White). 1234qwer1234qwer4 23:49, 11 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Keep - His name appears in the game's credits, which is enough proof that such a character is notable in its own way. Hansen Sebastian (Talk) 02:39, 12 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
RfD is not a place to discuss notability but to determine whether redirects are helpful, which is not the case when their target provides no information on their topic. 1234qwer1234qwer4 03:18, 12 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Not mentioned at target; according to a web search, this refers to "Wuhu Airbase". Note that the WHU disambiguation page mentions the corresponding IATA code, which is also not mentioned in the article. 1234qwer1234qwer4 23:01, 25 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Retarget to or disambigate with Disinflation. This term has become more common since 2007. It has probably become the primary topic to anyone searching. The current target doesn't mention this outside of a hatnote, and might cause readers to confuse the two terms. 174.89.12.36 (talk) 20:17, 18 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Buccal organ

[edit]

The result of the discussion was no consensus. Or, to be more specific, the consensus appears to be "unfortunately, none of us are biologists". asilvering (talk) 02:52, 3 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

"buccal" in this context means "of, in, or relating to the mouth". i hear there is at least one other organ that can be in the average mouth, that not every mouth has or is a sucker, and that suckers are not the primary topic for this term. no idea what this could be retargeted to, aside from mouth cogsan (nag me) (stalk me) 16:05, 10 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment the first hit on google for me is Rohde 1979 Light and electron microscopic studies of the ‘buccal suckers’ of Gotocotyla secunda showed that they are complex structures with muscular, glandular, (resorptive?), and probably sensory components. The name ‘buccal organ’ is therefore proposed for them. which clearly equates them with suckers. Looking further though I've rapidly become out of my depth in jargon so I can't answer the only relevant question in the nomination - "is the target the primary topic for this term". I'm going to leave a note at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Anatomy and hope that project is more active than the talk page makes it seem. Thryduulf (talk) 00:00, 11 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Also worthy of note is that this was originally a two-sentence stub starting Buccal organs, also known as bucal suckers, are present in worm parasites of the order Mazocraeidea., it was then redirected to Sucker (parasitic worm anatomy) which was merged to the present target in February 2014 by Chhandama. Thryduulf (talk) 00:11, 11 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
went and did some more in-depth looking at those results, and they equated the term "buccal organ" with "organ of, in, or relating to the mouth". buccal suckers are buccal organs by this definition, but so are teeth, tongues, and lips cogsan (nag me) (stalk me) 11:46, 11 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Apple Internet Phone Operating System

[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was no consensus. It's a plausible, albeit dated, name. The little letter has been part of Apple’s product line since the iMac was introduced in 1998, when it primarily meant "internet", at a time when computer users were transitioning from proprietary dial-up online services like AOL to the Internet, reached via coaxial cable rather than phone wires. Later, consumers transitioned from flip phones, which didn't do much if any internet, to smart phones, ushered in by the iPhone, which were as much internet devices as phones. These days, calling a phone an "internet phone" feels redundant. Those phones that aren't, are no longer phones -- they're "landlines". wbm1058 (talk) 01:00, 10 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Implausible redirect. Nobody calls the iPhone the "internet Phone". -1ctinus📝🗨 17:25, 25 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Previous RfDs for this redirect and similar redirects:
The problem with the previous nomination is that they focused on the redirect being unambiguous. While it is unambiguous, literally nobody calls an "iPhone" an internet phone. It is completely implausible and unhelpful. All the endorsements for keeping had "weak", and it's for a good reason. Sorry if this is badgering but I need to elaborate. -1ctinus📝🗨 18:49, 25 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As noted in the previous discussion it isn't "completely implausible" but actually rather plausible and helpful. You need to introduce new arguments that are actually reasons to delete if you want this nomination to go anywhere. Thryduulf (talk) 19:37, 25 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
delete as implausible key term salad, and seemingly not even close to being its actual etymology cogsan (nag me) (stalk me) 11:40, 26 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Your comment doesn't seem to relate to this redirect at all: It's entirely unambiguous and directly relates to it's single target, that being the operating system for Apple's Internet phone. As for the etymology, you're just plain wrong: iPhone states, with multiple sources, According to Jobs in 1998, the "i" word in "iMac" (and thereafter "iPod", "iPhone" and "iPad") stands for internet, individual, instruct, inform, and inspire.. Thryduulf (talk) 11:51, 26 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
is this... one of my arguments being outed as poorly researched, with evidence clearly and unambiguously debunking it? well played. still, delete per tavix, as it requires jumping through at least three mental hoops with an outdated name for one of five possible "full" names that not even the most pedantic pedant i know would ever bother to use outside of the context of this redirect. as for the views, i kind of wish i was joking, but a good portion of them were from me, following the original rfd. something something bad habit of clicking on things
also, the possessive form of "it" has no apostrophe, which is a painful truth i wish i could unsee, but that's besides the point cogsan (nag me) (stalk me) 18:21, 26 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete One of 278 redirects to Autobot that aren't mentioned there, as a result of double redirects bots going crazy. Delete the other 277 too. * Pppery * it has begun... 15:58, 25 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Comment. If you think the "other 277 redirects" deleted then they will need to be tagged a listed here. You can ask AWB user to do the tagging and listing if you don't want to do it yourself. However doing them in batches is less likely to result in a train wreck (certainly I'd separate any undisambiguated ones from those ending in "(Transformers)" as there is a much greater chance of retargetting being viable). Thryduulf (talk) 18:09, 25 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm aware of that. I'm unlikely to have the time and motivation to do a proper look through of those, especially since the basic concept that redirects from plot points not mentioned at their target are bad is being challenged below, but I figured that I should at least point it out in case anyone else was inclined. * Pppery * it has begun... 18:19, 25 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

drug lord mentions "methamphetamine" which is meth, and king and lord are synonyms in this case. So it is not an unreasonable redirect for "drug lord" -- 64.229.88.34 (talk) 23:31, 25 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Misspelling, miscapitalization, AND a shorter name, all in one. Seems implausible? asilvering (talk) 03:13, 18 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep The company is widely known as "Beckton Dickinson" so there is no issue at all with the length. All lowercase is almost always going to be a plausible search term, and I see no reason why it wouldn't be in this case. That leaves only the misspelling and Google results show that this is a common one - almost certainly given that it's a very plausible phonetic spelling. Putting it all together I'm seeing no reason to delete (it was only created today so there are no page view statistics). Note that this spelling is also currently in the lead of the article, but it was added by the redirect creator at about the same time. Thryduulf (talk) 03:27, 18 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This was my edit. I ran across the company in a news article that called it "Becton Dickenson", looked it up here, and didn't find a match. I quickly realized BD is the same thing and so created the redirect and added the alternate term to the intro. Brad (talk) 16:57, 18 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
