Life Sciences Foundation

Hello,

Thank you for your quick review of the Life Sciences Foundation article.

Since submitting the original article, I have added three more references to the draft which I planned to resubmit. As a newbie, I just want to make sure that I am clear on the reason the article was rejected. It appears the issue is lack of references but please do let me know if there are other issues with the article.

Thank you for your assistance,

Donnamarielock (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 23:55, 27 January 2012 (UTC).[reply]

Timeline of iPad models

Hi,

Could you please explain why you prefer this version of the Template:Timeline_of_iPad_models template to the version that reverted to. I made the undo for two reasons, the first being that for some reason I can't wrap my head around, in the legend both are shown as "iPad 2" whereas if the original iPad is labelled as such it shows as "Original iPad" and the iPad 2 shows as "iPad 2". The second is that the colours are so close that it makes it very hard to read the timeline.

Regards, Liamdavies (talk) 15:31, 14 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The key aim was to unify colours between the various iPod/iOS/etc timelines. I don't mind either way between "Original iPad" or "iPad". Sceptre (talk) 16:55, 14 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that their should be unified colours, but could you change them to be a little more contrasted so that you can more clearly see the difference. I agree that "Original iPad" or "iPad" would both be acceptable, but for some reason if you set the legend to "iPad" it just shows up as "iPad 2", well at least for me it does, so for that reason alone I think it should be changed to "Original iPad". Would you be able to make these changes to colours that you feel are best, but still have more contrast than the current colours?

Regards, Liamdavies (talk) 07:07, 15 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

How's it look now? Sceptre (talk) 20:15, 15 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Much clearer, I'd still like a little more contrast, so I changed it a little, but if your not happy with it feel free to change it. I'm also wondering if we need the "Still produced" part of the timeline, I would have thought it self evident that the iPad 2 is still being produced, what are your thoughts? Moving Burma to Myanmar - ongoing poll

This is to let you know that an ongoing poll is taking place to move Burma to Myanmar. This note is going out to wikipedia members who have participated in Burma/Myanmar name changing polls in the past. It does not include banned members nor those with only ip addresses. Thank you. Articles for creation/GreatAmerica Leasing Corporation

Wondering if you could give me some advice on specific actions I can take to improve my article that you recently reviewed for creation. Specifically, can you tell me what you felt were advertisement-like in the article? Thanks much! Wiedenu (talk) 21:46, 26 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. It was the general tone of the article that led me to decline it; there are a lot of corporations that want their own articles and they tend to use a lot of buzzwords and positive language. In particular, the "corporate organisation" section appears very self-serving. Sceptre (talk) 22:09, 26 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Brown University International Mentoring Program

Hi Will,

Thanks for reviewing my draft and I appreciate your comments. I feel that the page is significant/worthy because many international students who come to Brown get a sense of the network and support they will have. Many incoming students can get an idea of who is helping them and how the university provides support to them. If you have any ideas, please tell me what I can add to my article?

Thanks, Ewin93 (talk) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ewin93 (talkcontribs) 19:08, 27 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The baseline standard to warrant a Wikipedia article is notability: a subject that is the subject of significant coverage in secondary sources is presumed to be notable, and a notable subject may have a Wikipedia article. With your request, the only references were to Brown University's website, which is a primary source. Sceptre (talk) 19:18, 27 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again,

I've added 4 different articles from the Brown Daily Herald as secondary sources. I hope it's fine. If not, feel free to tell me how it can go through.

Thanks, Ewin93 (talk)

Gun (video game" Plot

Hey, I saw your edit and could you or someone do something about an Edit War going on with the video game Gun[2]? I think it's about the Plot. Looking at past edits (2007 and 08) it looks like it was shorten because it as too long and detailed.Control9000 (talk) 04:22, 28 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Since you've been watching this one, I wanted to warn you that our suspiciously WP:SPA article creator has also attempted to get this thing through as Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Jovan Hutton Pulitzer, which I declined as a duplicate. There are major COI and BLP issues here. Pulitzer changed his name after the CueCat debacle (he was originally J. Jovan Philyaw, and there is lots of big negative material about him, e.g. [3] and [4]. If he's notable, it's not in a good way. Mangoe (talk) 18:45, 28 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

GOCE drive newsletter

Invitation from the Guild of Copy Editors

The Guild of Copy Editors invites you to participate in their November 2011 Backlog elimination drive, a month-long effort to reduce the size of the copy edit backlog. The drive begins on November 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and ends on November 30 at 23:59 (UTC). We will be tracking the number of 2010 articles (and specifically will be targeting the oldest three months), as we want to copy edit as many of these as possible. Barnstars will be awarded to anyone who copy edits more than 4,000 words, and special awards will be given to the top 5 in the following categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", and "Number of articles of over 5,000 words". We hope to see you there! – Your drive coordinators: Diannaa, Chaosdruid, The Utahraptor, Slon02, and SMasters.

Walter Smith (cartographer)

Hello Will

I hope it's ok to use your regular "talk" page, rather than the IP page which we have conversed in up till now.

I have spoken to Walter about the article and he's pointed out to me that he isn't a "cartographer" - the title "cartographer" is something that crept in, btw, and wasn't in the original title of the piece. Walter is, in fact, a surveyor by training and experience. There's a subtle but important difference here: I guess a surveyor is he who does the measuring, i.e prepares the groundwork, and the cartographer actually draws and prints the thing. As I say, it's subtle. Anyway, the old boy (he's 90) has asked me if we can change the title of the piece. How can I go about this?

On another, completely unrelated matter, I note, from your user page, that you're an "audiophile" and particularly enjoy certain bands who are the very ones I grew up with (I'm 52). I'm also a professional composer, so that may interest you. If you'd like to chat more about music etc., that would be great. If you want to take this stuff off your public page, my email address is nick AT squareleg DOT net. Or you could just ignore all that... :)

Cheers

Cunt

Hey Sceptre, please don't go around calling people "reprehensible cunt", esp. not if they're still alive and a judge to boot. It doesn't matter what he did or what you or I might feel about it. I'm sure it violates our BLP policies in a couple of ways, and it sets a bad example for the kids and the grown-ups as well. All joking aside, come on now. Drmies (talk) 01:33, 4 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I think that user comment on a subject, unless patently libellious, would probably be BLP safe; the BLP policy is born out of legal and ethical issues, and personal opinions tend to be protected to a greater extent. Truth be told, I'm more sorry for using the word as an insult than actually making the insult. Sceptre (talk) 16:57, 4 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know about that. You may be familiar with Mindbunny's escapades (see User talk:Mindbunny)--if I remember correctly, there was consensus that such comments (like yours...) were not OK per BLP, and I personally agree. Anyway. Let's move on. Drmies (talk) 18:30, 4 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Rhys Morgan

  • Response I am obviously very disappointed by this decision. The assertion that I did not read the article is highly misleading, not to mention offensive. I have been a Wikipedia editor for many, many years, and have followed the rules and regulations throughout these years. To suggest that I did not follow the regulations is complete bunkum. Using the evidence present in the article, I made a choice based on what I thought was a fairly obvious case - it STILL breaks our rules on blogs, recentism, notability, and bias. The "keep" votes are from people who have an immense level of conflict of interest, and therefore skew the vote something rotten. I am very disappointed that this entire episode has been carried out at my expense, rather than at the article itself. This response will be copied to as many concerned editors in this matter. doktorb wordsdeeds 18:34, 3 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The block is here. It's probably just a misconfigured server, but I'll submit it to WP:OPP for someone to have a look at. If it's no longer an open proxy, it'll be unblocked, otherwise someone can grant IPBE (and the server admin should probably be notified as well). —DoRD (talk) 15:50, 3 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

New Page Triage engagement strategy released

Hey guys!

I'm dropping you a note because you filled out the New Page Patrol survey, and indicated you'd be interested in being contacted about follow-up work. This is to notify you that we've finally released both the initial documentation about the project and also the engagement strategy, which sets out how we plan to work with the community on this. Please give both a read, and leave any comments or suggestions you have on the talkpage, on my talkpage, or in my inbox - okeyes@wikimedia.org.

It's awesome to finally get to start work on this! :). Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 02:03, 3 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Page Triage newsletter

Hey guys!

Thanks to all of you who have commented on the New Page Triage talkpage. If you haven't had a chance yet, check it out; we're discussing some pretty interesting ideas, both from the Foundation and the community, and moving towards implementing quite a few of them :).

In addition, on Tuesday 13th March, we're holding an office hours session in #wikimedia-office on IRC at 19:00 UTC (11am Pacific time). If you can make it, please do; we'll have a lot of stuff to show you and talk about, including (hopefully) a timetable of when we're planning to do what. If you can't come, for whatever reason, let me know on my talkpage and I'm happy to send you the logs so you can get an idea of what happened :). Hey all!

Thanks to everyone who attended our first office hours session; the logs can be found here, if you missed it, and we should be holding a second one on Thursday, 22 March 2012 at 18:00 UTC in #wikimedia-office. I hope to see you all there :).

In the meantime, I have greatly expanded the details available at Wikipedia:New Page Triage: there's a lot more info about precisely what we're planning. If you have ideas, and they aren't listed there, bring them up and I'll pass them on to the developers for consideration in the second sprint. And if you know anyone who might be interested in contributing, send them there too!

Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 backlog elimination drive update

GOCE March 2012 Backlog Elimination progress graphs

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 Backlog elimination drive! Here's the mid-drive newsletter.

Participation: We have had 58 people sign up for this drive so far, which compares favorably with our last drive, and 27 have copy-edited at least one article. If you have signed up but have not yet copy-edited any articles, please consider doing so. Every bit helps! If you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us!

Progress report: Our target of completing the 2010 articles has almost been reached, with only 56 remaining of the 194 we had at the start of the drive. The last ones are always the most difficult, so thank you if you are able to help copy-edit any of the remaining articles. We have reduced the total backlog by 163 articles so far.

Special thanks: Special thanks to Stfg, who has been going through the backlog and doing some preliminary vetting of the articles—removing copyright violations, doing initial clean-up, and nominating some for deletion. This work has helped make the drive a more pleasant experience for all our volunteers.

Your drive coordinators – Dianna (talk), Stfg (talk), and Dank (talk)

help triage some feedback

Hey guys.

I appreciate this isn't quite what you signed up for, but I figured as people who are already pretty good at evaluating whether material is useful or not useful through Special:NewPages, you might be interested :). Over the last few months we've been developing the new Article Feedback Tool, which features a free text box. it is imperative that we work out in advance what proportion of feedback is useful or not so we can adjust the design accordingly and not overwhelm you with nonsense.

This is being done through the Feedback Evaluation System (FES), a tool that lets editors run through a stream of comments, selecting their value and viability, so we know what type of design should be promoted or avoided. We're about to start a new round of evaluations, beginning with an office hours session tomorrow at 18:00 UTC. If you'd like to help preemptively kill poor feedback, come along to #wikimedia-office and we'll show you how to use the tool. If you can't make it, send me an email at okeyes@wikimedia.org or drop a note on my talkpage, and I'm happy to give you a quick walkthrough in a one-on-one session :).

All the best, Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 21:36, 20 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

A big NPT update

Hey! Big update on what the developers have been working on, and what is coming up:

coding

  • Fixes for the "moved pages do not show up in Special:NewPages" and "pages created from redirects do not show up in Special:NewPages" bugs have been completed and signed off on. Unfortunately we won't be able to integrate them into the existing version, but they will be worked into the Page Triage interface.
  • Coding has been completed on three elements; the API for displaying metadata about the article in the "list view", the ability to keep the "patrol" button visible if you edit an article before patrolling it, and the automatic removal of deleted pages from the queue. All three are awaiting testing but otherwise complete.

All other elements are either undergoing research, or about to have development started. I appreciate this sounds like we've not got through much work, and truthfully we're a bit disappointed with it as well; we thought we'd be going at a faster pace :(. Unfortunately there seems to be some 24-72 hour bug sweeping the San Francisco office at the moment, and at one time or another we've had several devs out of it. It's kind of messed with workflow.

Stuff to look at

We've got a pair of new mockups to comment on that deal with the filtering mechanism; this is a slightly updated mockup of the list view, and this is what the filtering tab is going to look like. All thoughts, comments and suggestions welcome on the NPT talkpage :). I'd also like to thank the people who came to our last two office hours sessions; the logs will be shortly available here.

I've also just heard that the first functional prototype for enwiki will be deployed mid-April! Really, really stoked to see this happening :). We're finding out if we can stick something up a bit sooner on prototype.wiki or something.

I appreciate there may be questions or suggestions where I've said "I'll find out and get back to you" and then, uh. not ;p. I sincerely apologise for that: things have been a bit hectic at this end over the last few weeks. But if you've got anything I've missed, drop me a line and I'll deal with it! Further questions or issues to the usual address. Thanks, Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 17:10, 3 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to events in June and July: bot, script, template, and Gadget makers wanted

I invite you to the yearly Berlin hackathon, 1-3 June. Registration is now open. If you need financial assistance or help with visa or hotel, then please register by May 1st and mention it in the registration form.

This is the premier event for the MediaWiki and Wikimedia technical community. We'll be hacking, designing, teaching, and socialising, primarily talking about ResourceLoader and Gadgets (extending functionality with JavaScript), the switch to Lua for templates, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Labs.

We want to bring 100-150 people together, including lots of people who have not attended such events before. User scripts, gadgets, API use, Toolserver, Wikimedia Labs, mobile, structured data, templates -- if you are into any of these things, we want you to come!

I also thought you might want to know about other upcoming events where you can learn more about MediaWiki customization and development, how to best use the web API for bots, and various upcoming features and changes. We'd love to have power users, bot maintainers and writers, and template makers at these events so we can all learn from each other and chat about what needs doing.

Check out the the developers' days preceding Wikimania in July in Washington, DC and our other events.

Best wishes! - Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation's Volunteer Development Coordinator. Please reply on my talk page, here or at mediawiki.org. Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation Volunteer Development Coordinator 22:09, 3 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

GOCE March drive wrap-up

Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 backlog elimination drive
GOCE March 2012 Backlog Elimination progress graph

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 Backlog elimination drive! This is the most successful drive we have had for quite a while. Here is your end-of-drive wrap-up newsletter.

Participation

Of the 70 people who signed up for this drive, 40 copy-edited at least one article. Thanks to all who participated! Special acknowledgement goes out to Lfstevens, who did over 200 articles, most of them in the last third of the drive, and topped all three leaderboard categories. You're a superstar! Stfg and others have been pre-checking the articles for quality and conformance to Wikipedia guidelines; some have been nominated for deletion or had some preliminary clean-up done to help make the copy-edit process more fun and appealing. Thanks to all who helped get those nasty last few articles out of the target months.

Progress report

During this drive we were successful in eliminating our target months—October, November, and December 2010—from the queue, and have now eliminated all the 2010 articles from our list. We were able to complete 500 articles this month! End-of-drive results and barnstar information can be found here.

When working on the backlog, please keep in mind that there are options other than copy-editing available; some articles may be candidates for deletion, or may not be suitable for copy-editing at this time for other reasons. The {{GOCEreviewed}} tag can be placed on any article you find to be totally uneditable, and you can nominate for deletion any that you discover to be copyright violations or completely unintelligible. You were the image reviewer at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Subway (Homicide: Life on the Street)/archive1 which was promoted to FA on 25 January 2010. This included a review of the infobox image File:Homicide life on the street subway.jpg. User script list deprecation

Wikipedia's list of user scripts is in bad shape, in that it is disorganized and contains many non-working, unmaintained, or thoroughly obsolete entries. Cleanup has been on the to-do list since 2007, but little progress has been made. Instead, the whole list is now set to be deprecated on 1 May 2012, to be replaced with a new list. This draft list has been up for about a month, and in that time I've been soliciting script users and authors to come add scripts they know to be working and relevant.

If you know of scripts that you would like to survive this deprecation (and are confirmed working and relevant), you're welcome to add them to the new list. Note that the old list will be retained and linked from the main list, so there is no real deadline. Thanks for your help. Equazcion (talk) 00:57, 22 Apr 2012 (UTC)

GOCE May copy edit drive

Invitation from the Guild of Copy Editors

Manning

Given the controversial nature of such a move/change it really is critical it gets discussed before hand. Moving things to the female name, and using the female pronoun, has serious BLP considerations and should be dealt with using sensitivity and caution, not by the brute application of policy. --Errant (chat!) 22:37, 5 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Any enforcement of BLP is welcomed; ArbCom, Jimbo, and the Foundation are clear on that, however brute it may be. From the context of the sources (especially the Lamo chat logs), I can't see any way that referring to her as male doesn't violate IDENTITY. Sceptre (talk) 23:03, 5 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Sceptre, with all due respect, calling another editor "either dense or bigoted" is well past accepted civility standards. Well, "dense" I guess is fine, I've been called worse, but "bigoted" surely is not OK, especially not on a topic like that. You've been asked to retract and you haven't--I still hope you will. Thank you. Drmies (talk) 01:45, 6 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

New Pages update

Hey Sceptre/Archive 61 :). A quick update on how things are going with the New Page Triage/New Pages Feed project. As the enwiki page notes, the project is divided into two chunks: the "list view" (essentially an updated version of Special:NewPages) and the "article view", a view you'll be presented with when you open up individual articles that contains a toolbar with lots of options to interact with the page - patrolling it, adding maintenance tags, nominating it for deletion, so on.

On the list view front, we're pretty much done! We tried deploying it to enwiki, in line with our Engagement Strategy on Wednesday, but ran into bugs and had to reschedule - the same happened on Thursday :(. We've queued a new deployment for Monday PST, and hopefully that one will go better. If it does, the software will be ready to play around with and test by the following week! :).

On the article view front, the developers are doing some fantastic work designing the toolbar, which we're calling the "curation bar"; you can see a mockup here. A stripped-down version of this should be ready to deploy fairly soon after the list view is; I'm afraid I don't have precise dates yet. When I have more info, or can unleash everyone to test the list view, I'll let you know :). As always, any questions to the talkpage for the project or mine. Thanks! Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 23:28, 5 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Sceptre,

I hate to talk about anyone 'behind their back' so I wanted to let you know I asked WP Editor 2011 a question about you on User talk:WP Editor 2011 Penyulap 08:49, 10 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think it's "insensitive" to ensure ethical standards are followed for transgender living people; I think it's unethical that, despite sources given in the article affirming Manning's identity as female, we would describe her as male. Sceptre (talk) 09:24, 10 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
We go by sources, and the vast majority of sources say "Bradley", including this supportive website.[6]Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots11:52, 10 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
There are no "sources given in the article affirming Manning's identity as female". That is an outright lie. There are however sources affirming that Manning has indicated that he currently wishes to be identified as male, and known as 'Bradley' or 'Brad'. AndyTheGrump (talk) 14:01, 10 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Sceptre is clearly engaged in "wishful thinking", and it has to stop. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots15:11, 10 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

“Bradley felt he was female,” the counselor told me. “He was very solid on that.” Quickly, their conversation shifted to the practicalities: How does someone transition from male to female? “He really wanted to do surgery,” the counselor recalled. “He was mostly afraid of being alone, being ostracized or somehow weird.”

And, I hate to state the bleedin' obvious, but if you're using gender identity disorder as a legal defence, there has to be cross-gender identification. Sceptre (talk) 15:24, 10 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Why do the sources, including his support website, still call him "Bradley"? ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots15:30, 10 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Also, how does gender identity qualify as a defense for espionage? ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots15:31, 10 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
1) Probably because that's how she was arrested, and how she'll go through the trial. The issue of names is distinct from the issue of gender identity: many trans people use their birth names for some time until they choose a more suitable name when undergoing transition. 2) I guess diminished responsibility due to the effect of gender dysphoria. I'm unaware of the exact circumstances, just that it's being brought up as part of the defence. Sceptre (talk) 15:35, 10 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think "gender identify" qualifies as a plea. "Insanity" might. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots16:26, 10 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Crystal ball to support OR ?

I say thank you very much. There is a difference between what a confused person says once while investigating themselves in therapy with professionals and what a person says repeatedly as a public declaration to the press and in public. I firmly believe the difference is not lost on you.

Elevating one of the many things someone mentions in therapy to the status of a public declaration which overrides all other public declarations is a good way to attack the individual in question using wikipedia as your own personal loudhailer. The chance that the person in question doesn't read the article is about the same as the chance he doesn't use the internet or know someone who does. So your aim is not so much just to disrupt here, upset the community here and outside, but what is it ? (Redacted)

WP Editor 2011 was supporting you at ANI, so I was trying to triple-check to make certain there was nothing I was missing. On that editors talkpage, my enquiry met a dead end, but you've helped here, so thank you. Penyulap 04:10, 11 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

"Crystal ball to support OR?" ??? Since when have you ever heard of someone pleading "not guilty by reason of gender identity crisis"? Sorry, but there's no such thing. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots05:18, 11 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Not that any of this is important, BB, but Sceptre never said anything about a plea, he said it might be a defense and he mentioned diminished responsibility. A complicated legal issue dependent on the jurisdiction, the charged crime, and the defenses to that crime.--Bbb23 (talk) 23:06, 11 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

GOCE May mid-drive newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors May 2012 backlog elimination drive mid-drive newsletter

Participation: Out of 49 people signed up for this drive so far, 26 have copy-edited at least one article. It's a smaller group than last drive, but we're making good progress. If you've signed up but haven't yet copy-edited any articles, please consider doing so. Every bit helps! If you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us!

Progress report: We're on track to meet our targets for the drive, largely due to the efforts of Lfstevens and the others on the leaderboard. Thanks to all. We have reduced our target group of articles—January, February, and March 2011—by over half, and it looks like we will achieve that goal. Good progress is being made on the overall backlog as well, with over 500 articles copy-edited during the drive so far. The total backlog currently sits at around 3200 articles.

Hall of Fame: GOCE coordinator Diannaa was awarded a spot in the GOCE Hall of Fame this month! She has copy-edited over 1567 articles during these drives, and surpassed the 1,000,000-word mark on May 5. On to the second million! – Your drive coordinators: Dank, Diannaa and Stfg

New Page Triage/New Pages Feed

Hey all :). A notification that the prototype for the New Pages Feed is now live on enwiki! We had to briefly take it down after an unfortunate bug started showing up, but it's now live and we will continue developing it on-site.

The page can be found at Special:NewPagesFeed. Please, please, please test it and tell us what you think! Note that as a prototype it will inevitably have bugs - if you find one not already mentioned at the talkpage, bring it up and I'm happy to carry it through to the devs. The same is true of any additions you can think of to the software, or any questions you might have - let me know and I'll respond.

Articles for Creation Appeal

Articles for Creation is backlogged and needs YOUR help!

Articles for Creation is desperately in need of reviewers! We are looking for urgent help, from experienced editors and administrators alike, to help us clear a record backlog of pending submissions. There is currently a significant backlog of 1718 submissions waiting to be reviewed. These submissions are generally from new editors who have never edited Wikipedia before. A prompt, constructive review of submissions could significantly editor retention.

Do you have what it takes?
  1. Are you familiar with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines?
  2. Do you know what Wikipedia is and is not?
  3. Do you have a working knowledge of the Manual of Style, particularly article naming conventions?
  4. Are you (at least) autoconfirmed?
  5. Can you review submissions based on their individual merits?

If the answer to these questions is yes, then please read the reviewing instructions and donate a little of your time to helping tackle the backlog.

Click here to review to a random submissionArticle selected by erwin85's random article script on toolserver.

We would greatly appreciate your help. Currently, only a small handful of users are reviewing articles. Any help, even if it's just 1 or 2 reviews, would be extremely beneficial.

GOCE May drive wrap-up

Guild of Copy Editors May 2012 backlog elimination drive wrap-up

Participation: Out of 54 people who signed up this drive, 32 copy-edited at least one article. Last drive's superstar, Lfstevens, again stood out, topping the leader board in all three categories and copy-editing over 700 articles. Thanks to all who participated! Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Progress report: We were once again successful in our primary goal—removing the oldest three months from the backlog—while removing 1166 articles from the queue, the second-most in our history. The total backlog currently sits at around 2600 articles, down from 8323 when we started out just over two years ago.

Coodinator election: The six-month term for our third tranche of Guild coordinators will be expiring at the end of June. We will be accepting nominations for the fourth tranche of coordinators, who will also serve a six-month term. Nominations will open starting on June 5. Your comment

You wrote: "I disagree with both the topic ban (as it only serves to shut down discussion) and why it was applied (as a sense of victor's justice). In reality the topic ban did not shut down the discussion, it just excluded you from it, and it was not applied as a sense of victor's justice, it was applied to prevent you from wasting more time. Arcandam (talk) 20:01, 26 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Really? If other editors from WP:LGBT raised the same concerns, would you entertain them? This whole debacle reeks of people who don't know what they're talking about when it comes to a sensitive issue forming a consensus on that issue and seeking to exclude people who do know what they're talking about. Like the Republicans and birth control, now that I think about it. Sceptre (talk) 21:29, 26 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Really. People on Wikipedia usually don't need to be entertained by me if they have concerns about a certain page (sofixit, be bold). It may be surprising to some, but Wikipedia would still be here if I wasn't. There is also no need for a long discussion, because the bottomline is pretty simple. We need a couple of reliable sources. You have a strong opinion about this kind of stuff, but please don't compare me to a Republican, I don't think you would make that comparison if you knew what I look like. Maybe I should upload a picture. Back to the topic at hand: if you do know what you are talking about then you understand not just gender related issues but Wikipedia as well. On Wikipedia we have this principle of verifiability, not truth. Wikipedia is behind the ball - that is we don't lead, we follow - let reliable sources make the novel connections and statements and find NPOV ways of presenting them if needed. The Defenders of The Truth should wait patiently until the reliable sources right this great wrong. Arcandam (talk) 00:38, 27 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I apologise for the Republican analogy, but there are a lot of people who appear to not have the knowledge needed to contribute to such a sensitive topic seriously. I've been strongly of the opinion that there are already enough sources in the article already to, at the very least, seriously discuss Manning's gender identity (for example, the counsellor Manning contacted saying "Bradley felt he was female, he was very solid on that"(source #23). And I seriously think that some editors would require Manning to undergo SRS and publish the video to the world before entertaining the notion of changing the pronouns. Sceptre (talk) 01:09, 27 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Personally I don't really care much about the genders and sexual preferences of most people I am unlikely to have sex with. If we as a species stopped caring so much about genders life would be much easier for some people afaik. I admit I am not an expert but I think I may have seen a gay guy once (I live in Amsterdam, he was dancing on a boat on the canal in front of my house). Would you please be so kind to point out the flaw(s) in the following sentence: "If Manning decides to be female from now on it will be reported in reliable sources and if that decision is reported by reliable sources someone else will come along and include that fact on Manning's article."? We may have reason to believe Manning is unsure about Mannings gender, but until we have multiple reliable sources that report that Manning has made a choice we will have to be patient. But now for something completely different, and more important. I believe you are underestimating your "opponents". I am not a homophobic Republican who is completely unaware of the sensitivity of gender related issues, and I don't think the other people who disagree with you are (I've quickly skimmed a couple of userpages). This Wikipedia-thingy is an epic battle between good and evil. You and Andy are on the same team, the team that tries to improve Wikipedia. You guys disagree about how to improve Wikipedia but you both have good intentions for both Manning and Wikipedia. I am on the other team, I frequently try to destroy Wikipedia by doing something that looks very similar to a DDoS attack when I am not out killing baby seals for fun and profit. Arcandam (talk) 03:04, 27 June 2012 (UTC) p.s. 1440 edits per day is exactly one per minute.[reply]
The thing is, I don't think it'll properly covered in reliable sources, or at least the ones that will cover it. The press has an awful reputation for covering trans issues, and any deviation from following ethical standards as dictated by the medical, academic, and even their own community will likely land us back in square one. Anyway, I'll have to cut the discussion there, because I'm running the risk of getting blocked. On my own talk page. Sceptre (talk) 03:40, 27 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
WTF? I voted for a topic ban on articles related to Bradley Manning, broadly construed. Is this an article? Arcandam (talk) 03:56, 27 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I don't get it. The goal of the topicban on articles I voted for was to prevent further IDHT problems. How does this help? Arcandam (talk) 04:59, 27 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I've requested two unblocks. Here is the template: Hello. This message is being sent to inform you that there is currently a discussion at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents regarding an issue with which you may have been involved. Thank you. You have been blocked from editing for a period of 1 week for violating your topic ban on Bradley Manning here. Once the block has expired, you are welcome to make useful contributions. If you think there are good reasons why you should be unblocked, you may appeal this block by adding the text {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}, but you should read the guide to appealing blocks first. This user's unblock request has been reviewed by an administrator, who declined the request. Other administrators may also review this block, but should not override the decision without good reason (see the blocking policy).

Sceptre (block logactive blocksglobal blockscontribsdeleted contribsfilter logcreation logchange block settingsunblockcheckuser (log))

Request reason:

Really? You're really going to block me if I say the words "Bradley" and "Manning" in the same sentence? This is an unprecedented action, blocking someone for replying to a query on their talk page. At the very least, I wish to immediately request that the topic ban be restricted to the article and talk, because really, this is ridiculous. Sceptre (talk) 8:34 pm, Today (UTC−7)

Decline reason:

Technical decline, AGF. Administrators can not overturn this block because it is an AE block. Please contact the ban appeals subcommittee. Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 03:51, 27 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

No, I blocked you for for example, the counsellor Manning contacted saying "Bradley felt he was female, he was very solid on that". --SarekOfVulcan (talk) 03:38, 27 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Would I have been violating the topic ban if I had not included that quote? Point is, this is beyond preventing disruption. This is purely for the purposes of shutting down a civil discussion, which is absolutely unprecedented on Wikipedia. Sceptre (talk) 03:44, 27 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
This user's unblock request has been reviewed by an administrator, who declined the request. Other administrators may also review this block, but should not override the decision without good reason (see the blocking policy).

Request reason:

Please read my explanation and rationale in the paragraphs below. Avanu (talk) 06:05, 27 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Decline reason:

Decline both because the unblock request is not from the blocked editor, and is not doable. This is an arbitration enforcement block, and so cannot be unilaterally undone by any particular admin. The arbitration enforcement page contains information on how to file an appeal to an arbitration action. Sceptre, if you post such an appeal on this page and a request to copy it to AE, someone will do so for you. However, an arbitration enforcement block cannot be unilaterally lifted through the {{unblock}} process. Seraphimblade Talk to me 06:13, 27 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

Sceptre, before I weigh in on this, I do want you to know that I do not agree with your position on the articles that led to the BLPBAN. (In other words, I'm not on your side in the content dispute.)

That said, while Shirik makes a good point that the appeals on enforcement of bans would normally fall under the ban appeals subcommittee, I feel that Sarek of Vulcan in this case acted outside the Pillar and Policy of Civility. Specifically, while a BLPBAN was implemented (by Sarek), the specifics of the ban were not communicated in clear language to the recipient of that ban. (Specifically he said, "BLPBAN imposed".)

While Sarek sort of warned Sceptre at AN/I about having 'blatantly violated' the ban, this was almost immediately after Sarek enacted the ban and was within the framework of the discussion at AN/I. Sceptre clearly did not understand how the ban was to operate. And similarly, in this event, responding to a question on his own talk page, Sarek decided to throw down the block-hammer, still having not clearly explained the BLPBAN provisions, but expecting instant comprehension and compliance from Sceptre.

Basic civility demands that we notify an editor clearly within the relevant discussion (i.e. AN/I) or their Talk page, so that they can be expected to have a clear understanding. I would characterize what is currently being done as "gotcha" approach to enforcing a ban, where the editor is unwittingly stepping into a trap without being made aware that these actions are wrong. For this reason, I would ask that Sarek's topic ban continue, but that he explain it clearly, and in future either stay well clear of Sceptre and ask for another admin to administer this ban, or clearly warn Sceptre in advance of any punitive action. Thanks. -- Avanu (talk) 05:47, 27 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I also took a look at the notice that was placed here by Sarek on 25 June at 2:23, and it says "topic-banned from edits relating to Bradley Manning, broadly construed" with 'Bradley Manning' as a link to the article. Now, for people who implement bans a lot, this may seem perfectly clear, but considering that the other editor who engaged Sceptre in discussion, Arcandam, was confused when the block got imposed, another reasonable way to look at that notice is that the editor is banned from editing the linked article, or possibly articles that are content-forks off it. Obviously it wasn't clear to Arcandam, and I would say not clear to Sceptre either. Basic, thoughtful civility could have worked to everyone's advantage here. As stated at the AN/I discussion, Sceptre hadn't even been messing with the Bradley Manning page, so a ban or block wasn't a pressing concern. For an editor who is currently and generally in compliance with community standards, it is inappropriate to be so harsh. Again, I would ask for an admin to ask Sarek to give a full and plain description of how this ban is to work, unblock Sceptre and allow things to get back to normal. How do we even know if Sceptre is learning and improving if they can't even have a conversation with another editor who is trying to discuss with them? -- Avanu (talk) 06:02, 27 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I have a brain the size of a planet. I can back that statement up with refs. But still I did not notice the ban changed from articles related to Manning to all edits. And I do not understand why it should be. If Sceptre needs to be blocked I will file a request. Until then please give us the chance to have a productive conversation about this. Arcandam (talk) 06:43, 27 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Rules and procedures are not important. It is more important to make sense Arcandam (talk) 06:43, 27 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Decline reason:

Individual admins are prohibited, on pain of desysopping, from undoing an arbitration enforcement block, in the absence of either arbcom authorization or "a clear, substantial, and active consensus of uninvolved editors at a community discussion noticeboard". Your time would be better spent trying to get such a consensus than repeatedly making unblock requests that no admin will grant. T. Canens (talk) 07:27, 27 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

No one here repeatedly made unblock requests AFAIK. I always forget that some people actually care about rules and procedures and take the "threat" of desysopping seriously. Becoming an admin is a demotion; I am not an admin and I frequently tell admins what to do. And I don't have to think about RFA-votes when I express my opinion. Arcandam (talk) 07:49, 27 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I support this unblock per an ongoing block review discussion at WP:AN/I. Furthermore, I support an admin if they decide to WP:IAR and make this unblock without reference to the ban appeals subcommittee, since the block is, by WP:SNOW consensus, wrong. - Jorgath (talk) (contribs) 06:55, 27 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Procedural note: the block is actually not a matter of Arbcom enforcement, but of community sanction enforcement, so the applicability of the Arbcom decision cited by T.C. above is not quite obvious. Nevertheless, it seems clear that it should not be overturned without a clear consensus. This will be done as soon as the consensus currently emerging at WP:ANI has stabilized. Fut.Perf. 08:44, 27 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, since Sarek invoked WP:BLPSE in the original ban (and both the topic ban and block are logged there), and not simply the ANI consensus, this is an AE action. T. Canens (talk) 08:49, 27 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Bottom line is: how does this block protect the encyclopedia? It does not. Therefore we need to unblock. IDGAF about rules or procedures that prevent us from doing what is right. Arcandam (talk) 09:57, 27 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Good thing is, the rules aren't preventing us from doing what is right, Arbcom or no Arbcom. The matter is being discussed, a consensus is being formed, and it will be acted upon when the time is ripe. Fut.Perf. 11:26, 27 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
While I would normally agree with people saying "this is an AE action", if it were a legitimate block, I don't see how Sceptre was given any understanding by Sarek. Oblique comments and templated posts don't make for good communication. As I said before, WP:Civility is not just a policy here, but a Pillar, and I feel that without question Sarek ignored that pillar. -- Avanu (talk) 14:04, 27 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This time, without the {{unblock}} template: Per the above, there is now a clear consensus of editors at WP:AN who have previously been in conflict with Sceptre that this block was a massive overreaction. - Jorgath (talk) (contribs) 15:34, 27 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Credo Reference Update & Survey (your opinion requested)

Credo Reference, who generously donated 400 free Credo 250 research accounts to Wikipedia editors over the past two years, has offered to expand the program to include 100 additional reference resources. Credo wants Wikipedia editors to select which resources they want most. So, we put together a quick survey to do that:

It also asks some basic questions about what you like about the Credo program and what you might want to improve.

At this time only the initial 400 editors have accounts, but even if you do not have an account, you still might want to weigh in on which resources would be most valuable for the community (for example, through WikiProject Resource Exchange).

Also, if you have an account but no longer want to use it, please leave me a note so another editor can take your spot.

If you have any other questions or comments, drop by my talk page or email me at [email protected]. Cheers! Ocaasi t | c 17:32, 11 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The WikiProject Report would like to focus on WikiProject Doctor Who for a Signpost article. This is an excellent opportunity to draw attention to your efforts and attract new members to the project. Would you be willing to participate in an interview? If so, here are the questions for the interview. Just add your response below each question and feel free to skip any questions that you don't feel comfortable answering. Welcome

Hi, Sceptre, welcome to WikiProject LGBT Studies!

We are a growing community of Wikipedia editors dedicated to identifying, categorizing, and improving articles regarding lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) and intersex people. LGBT Studies covers people, culture, history, and related subjects concerning sexual identity and gender identity - this covers a lot of ground and your help is appreciated! Some points that may be helpful:

  • Our main aim is to help improve articles, so if someone seeks help, please try to assist if you are able. Likewise feel free to ask for help, advice or clarification.
  • Many important discussions take place on the project's main discussion page; it is highly recommended that you watchlist it.
  • If you have another language besides English, please consider adding yourself to our translation section, to help us improve our foreign LGBT topics.
  • The project has several ongoing and developing activities, such as article quality assessment, peer review and a project-wide article collaboration, all of which you are welcome to take part in. We also have a unique program to improve our lower quality articles, Jumpaclass, so please consider signing up there.
  • If you're going to stay awhile, please create a square in our project quilt! You can put anything you want in it.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask on the talk page, and we will be happy to help you.

And once again - Welcome!

We are just two articles away from completing all requests made before July 2012 (both are in progress).

Page Triage newsletter

Hey all. Some quick but important updates on what we've been up to and what's coming up next :).

The curation toolbar, our Wikimedia-supported twinkle replacement. We're going to be deploying it, along with a pile of bugfixes, to wikipedia on 9 August. After a few days to check it doesn't make anything explode or die, we'll be sticking up a big notice and sending out an additional newsletter inviting people to test it out and give us feedback :). This will be followed by two office hours sessions - one on Tuesday the 14th of August at 19:00 UTC for all us Europeans, and one on Wednesday the 15th at 23:00 UTC for the East Coasters out there :). As always, these will be held in #wikimedia-office; drop me a note if you want to know how to easily get on IRC, or if you aren't able to attend but would like the logs.

I hope to see a lot of you there; it's going to be a big day for everyone involved, I think :). I'll have more notes after the deployment! Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 20:01, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

New Pages newsletter

Hey all :)

A couple of new things.

First, you'll note that all the project titles have now changed to the Page Curation prefix, rather than having the New Pages Feed prefix. This is because the overarching project name has changed to Page Curation; the feed is still known as New Pages Feed, and the Curation Toolbar is still the Curation Toolbar. Hopefully this will be the last namechange ;p.

On the subject of the Curation Toolbar (nice segue, Oliver!) - it's now deployed on Wikipedia. Just open up any article in the New Pages Feed and it should appear on the right. It's still a beta version - bugs are expected - and we've got a lot more work to do. But if you see something going wrong, or a feature missing, drop me a note or post on the project talkpage and I'll be happy to help :). We'll be holding two office hours sessions to discuss the tool and improvements to it; the first is at 19:00 UTC on 14 August, and the second at 23:00 on the 15th. Both will be in #wikimedia-office as always. Thanks! Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 15:40, 10 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Misha B

Sorry to bother you,

"Due to a long-standing conflict I entered myself in several years ago, I will not mediate disputes on my page. I will give advice, but it is nonbinding." any help would be appreciated.

I have requested the re-opening the Dispute Resolution mechanism for the Misha B article @ Wikipedia:Dispute resolution noticeboard/Archive 38 as the debate about neutrality has really flared up. on User talk:Steven Zhang who closed the original Dispute Resolution based on my suggestion...no one else in the dispute contributed.

or should I go to formal mediation?

I make no pretence that I am a fan, I guess the majority articles about (living) people are started and mainly contributed by those who are 'fans', but my contibutions have been done in good faith regards neutrality (as a newbie I have made mistakes...like not spotting blogs) I always take personal criticism and attacks maybe too seriously but I have said I welcome genuine verifiable editing contributions from others, even when they remove my contributions, which can be seen from page history.

Bias about bullying

Biased and promotional

DRN

Misha B Layout Structure

Why does the Misha article read like a magazine article?

Too much information and way too biased

WP:NPOV/N is probably your best bet here. Steven Zhang ....*Which I have followed

In the mean time I would very much welcome a neutral viewpoint from someone not involved in the article.........Zoebuggie☺whispers 02:37, 15 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Page Curation update

Hey all :). We've just deployed another set of features for Page Curation. They include flyouts from the icons in Special:NewPagesFeed, showing who reviewed an article and when, a listing of this in the "info" flyout, and a general re-jigging of the info flyout - we've also fixed the weird bug with page_titles_having_underscores_instead_of_spaces in messages sent to talkpages, and introduced CSD logging! As always, these features will need some work - but any feedback would be most welcome.

  • Progress report: We're almost on track to meet our targets for the drive. Great work, guys. We have reduced our target group of articles—August, September, and October 2011—by about 44%, and the overall backlog has been reduced by 58 articles so far, to around 2600 articles. The biggest difference between this drive and the previous one is a stronger focus on large articles, so total word counts are still comparable.

Hey Sceptre. This will be, if not our final newsletter, one of the final ones :). After months of churning away at this project, our final version (apart from a few tweaks and bugfixes) is now live. Changes between this and the last release include deletion tag logging, a centralised log, and fixes to things like edit summaries.

Hopefully you like what we've done with the place; suggestions for future work on it, complaints and bugs to the usual address :). We'll be holding a couple of office hours sessions, which I hope you'll all attend. Many thanks, Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 11:02, 24 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

GOCE September 2012 drive wrap-up

Guild of Copy Editors September 2012 backlog elimination drive wrap-up

Participation: Out of 41 people who signed up this drive, 28 copy-edited at least one article. Thanks to all who participated! Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Progress report: We achieved our primary goal of clearing July, August, September and October 2011 from the backlog. This means that, for the first time since the drives began, the backlog is less than a year. At least 677 tagged articles were copy edited, although 365 new ones were added during the month. The total backlog at the end of the month was 2341 articles, down from 8323 when we started out over two years ago. We completed all 54 requests outstanding before September 2012 as well as eight of those made in September.

Copy Edit of the Month: Voting is now over for the August 2012 competition, and prizes will be issued soon. The September 2012 contest is closed for submissions and open for voting. The October 2012 contest is now open for submissions. Everyone is welcome to submit entries and to vote.

Page Curation newsletter - closing up!

Hey all :).

We're (very shortly) closing down this development cycle for Page Curation. It's genuinely been a pleasure to talk with you all and build software that is so close to my own heart, and also so effective. The current backlog is 9 days, and I've never seen it that low before.

However! Closing up shop does not mean not making any improvements. First-off, this is your last chance to give us a poke about unresolved bugs or report new ones on the talkpage. If something's going wrong, we want to know about it :). Second, we'll hopefully be taking another pass over the software next year. If you've got ideas for features Page Curation doesn't currently have, stick them here.

Again, it's been an honour. Thanks :). Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 12:08, 17 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Followup RFC to WP:RFC/AAT now in community feedback phase

Hello. As a participant in Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Abortion article titles, you may wish to register an opinion on its followup RFC, Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Abortion advocacy movement coverage, which is now in its community feedback phase. Please note that WP:RFC/AAMC is not simply a repeat of WP:RFC/AAT, and is attempting to achieve better results by asking a more narrowly-focused, policy-based question of the community. Assumptions based on the previous RFC should be discarded before participation, particularly the assumption that Wikipedia has or inherently needs to have articles covering generalized perspective on each side of abortion advocacy, and that what we are trying to do is come up with labels for that. Thanks! —chaos5023 20:32, 24 October 2012 (UTC)

This is not a newsletter

This is just a tribute.

Anyway. You're getting this note because you've participated in discussion and/or asked for updates to either the Article Feedback Tool or Page Curation. This isn't about either of those things, I'm afraid ;p. We've recently started working on yet another project: Echo, a notifications system to augment the watchlist. There's not much information at the moment, because we're still working out the scope and the concepts, but if you're interested in further updates you can sign up here.

In addition, we'll be holding an office hours session at 21:00 UTC on Wednesday, 14 November in #wikimedia-office - hope to see you all there :). I appreciate it's an annoying time for non-Europeans: if you're interested in chatting about the project but can't make it, give me a shout and I can set up another session if there's enough interest in one particular timezone or a skype call if there isn't. GOCE November 2012 copy edit drive update

Guild of Copy Editors November 2012 backlog elimination drive mid-drive newsletter

  • Participation: Out of 31 people signed up for this drive so far, 22 have copy-edited at least one article. If you've signed up but haven't yet copy-edited any articles, every bit helps; if you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us!
  • Progress report: We're on track to meet our targets for the drive. We have reduced our target group of articles—November and December 2011—by over 50%, and 34 of the the 56 requests made in September and October this year have already been fulfilled. However, the rate of tagging for copy edit has increased, and this month we are just keeping the size of the backlog stable. So, all you copy editors, please do come along and help us!
  • The September 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest was won by Baffle gab1978 for his copy edit of Expulsion of the Acadians. Runner up was Gareth Griffith-Jones for his edit of I Could Fall in Love. Congratulations to both.
  • The October 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest is in the discussion and voting stage until midnight November 30 (UTC). You don't have to make a submission to vote!
  • November 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest is in the submissions stage until midnight November 30 (UTC), when discussion and voting begin.
  • Seasonal oversight: We had a slight fall from grace in the title of our last newletter, which mentioned the season in the northern hemisphere and thus got it wrong for the southern. Fortunately an observant GOCE member was ready to spring into action to advise us. Thanks! In future we'll stay meteorologically neutral.

GOCE November drive wrap-up

Guild of Copy Editors November 2012 backlog elimination drive wrap-up

Participation: Thanks to all who participated! Out of 38 people who signed up this drive, 33 copy-edited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. All the barnstars have now been distributed.

Progress report: We achieved our primary goal of clearing November and December 2011 from the backlog. For the first time since the drives began, the backlog consists only of articles tagged in the current year. The total backlog at the end of the month was 2690 articles, down from 8323 when we started out over two years ago. We completed all 56 requests outstanding before November 2012 as well as eight of those made in November.

Copy Edit of the Month: Voting is now over for the October 2012 competition, and prizes have been issued. The November 2012 contest is closed for submissions and open for voting. The December 2012 contest is now open for submissions. Everyone is welcome to submit entries and to vote.

Coodinator election: The six-month term for our fourth tranche of Guild coordinators will expire at the end of December. Nominations are open for the fifth tranche of coordinators, who will serve from 1 January to 30 June 2013. For complete information, please have a look at the election page.

Russell T Davies 'marriage'

I appreciate your concern for wording and citing his recent ceremony correctly - I would appreciate if you would help to do this, or would participate in a discussion, rather than simply removing any mention of his marriage/marriage announcement. Presumably once the new DWM comes out with the news announcement, that would count as an acceptable source, even though their source is Andrew's Twitter account? Also, do you have any suggestions for how to word it, considering that AS's preferred term is marriage yet it is not a legal marriage? Starhunterfan (talk) 12:14, 8 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

From my activist side I always have to emphasise that the current situation currently is not marriage, unfortunately (but hopefully, that should change soon). I think if it gets picked up in DWM, that would count, even if they source Twitter themselves; unfortunately, we can't use non-verified twitter accounts as sources. End of Year Events from the Guild of Copy Editors

The Guild of Copy Editors invites you to participate in its events:

  • The December 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest is currently in the submissions stage. Submit your best December copy edit there before the end of the month. Submissions end, and discussion and voting begin, on January 1 at 00:00 (UTC).
  • Voting is in progress for the November 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest. Everyone is welcome to vote, whether they have entered the contest or not.
  • From Sunday 16 December to Saturday 22 December, we are holding a Project Blitz, in which we will copy edit articles tagged with {{copyedit}} from January 2012. The blitz works much like our bimonthly drives, but a bit simpler. Everyone is welcome to take part, and barnstars will be awarded.
  • January 2013 Backlog elimination drive is a month-long effort to reduce the size of the copy edit backlog. The drive begins on January 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and ends on January 31 at 23:59 (UTC). Our goals are to copy edit all articles tagged in January, February, and March 2012 and complete all requests placed before the end of 2012. Barnstars will be awarded to anyone who copy edits at least one article, and special awards will be given to the top five in the following categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", "Number of articles of over 5,000 words", "Number of articles tagged in January, February, and March 2012", and "Longest article". We hope to see you there! – Your drive coordinators: Stfg, Allens, and Torchiest.

Coodinator election: Nominations are open for candidates to serve as GOCE coordinators from 1 January to 30 June 2013. Nominations close on December 15 at 23:59 UTC, after which voting will run until the end of December. For complete information, please have a look at the election page.

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Julie Burchill, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Liberal Democrat and John Mulholland (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Your comment at ANI

Hello, Sceptre; I appreciate your comments at the ANI discussion.

I did, however, want to correct what you think I think. The description(s) of my beliefs on my BLP are not quite accurate. (You might want to look through the page's history to see how exactly that description came to be.) What I said (and believe) is just my observation from being a psychologist accompanying very many people on their various journeys understanding their sex/gender and how to integrate it into their lives. The point I was making to the reporter (from Toronto's local GLBT paper), was that folks early in the process often have trouble distinguishing between what it is that they want for themselves and what they are doing in order to fulfill the expectations or desires of others. That is, as they continue to explore their gender and sexuality, they better understand their motivations, and their personal narratives change. That's it really. — James Cantor (talk) 21:32, 26 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Do not....

Do not take my name in vain, talk utter tripe and think I won't notice [7] The civility parole was nothing more than crude attempt by a crowd of inept morons masquerading as an Arbcom to humiliate and cower - it failed miserably on both counts. If I appear to have mellowed, it's because I have tired of Wikipedia and the infants who play here so am seldom around. Giano (talk) 22:28, 27 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

HJ Res15

I changed my mind regarding this issue. I think that it can be merged, only because it's a rather short article and may not have the critical mass of attention needed for a standalone. Hell In A Bucket (talk) 06:54, 29 January 2013 (UTC) I noticed only you and I commented on this issue and per my comment above I went ahead and redirected to the suggestion you made. Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. Hey Sceptre. Not sure what you meant to type, but Gynandromorphilia is a redlink, and, unless it's been OS'ed, does not appear to have ever existed. I tried a few proximate spellings but couldn't find anything. — PinkAmpers&(Je vous invite à me parler) 19:32, 10 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
