Draft page

[edit]

Fixed it; you simply forgot to include "url=" for the weblinks, which mucked up the template. Glad to see you working on Wikipedia articles again; you've always been one of the best editors I've come to know here. Two little things you should fix on your draft: only the earliest release date needs to be listed in the infobox, and reviews should no longer be included in the infobox (they haven't gotten around to removing the template code for it). WesleyDodds (talk) 09:03, 2 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I haven't bought any guitar mag recently, unfortunately. By the way, have you checked out rocksbackpages.com yet? I can't remember if I ever told you about the site.
Speaking of important metal articles, I'm supposed to be working on Led Zeppelin these days, but I've been really busy in the last month. If you ever feel like lending a hand, what the article really needs right now is a cracking good Musical Style section. WesleyDodds (talk) 03:30, 6 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I have the Mick Wall bio checked out from my local library. It's pretty solid from a factual basis; the only annoying aspect is Wall tends to write these imaginary first-person segments throughout the book. WesleyDodds (talk) 09:06, 12 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Comments on Enter the Grave

[edit]

Hi, I've had a look at Enter the Grave. I must warn you that I don't often review at WP:FAC, and I really would recommend taking it to peer review before nominating, if you're not sure. However, I spotted a few things, so will comment here.

Music samples

  • If you check out Wikipedia:Manual of Style (music samples), both the music samples used in the article appear to be too long (based on the length in the track listing), and also too high quality. If you can, reduce them not only in length, but down 64kbps. Otherwise, you might fail on no. 3 of WP:WIAFA.

Infobox

  • I noticed it here, but it applies to the whole article, is there a reason dates are in Month day, year format? Usually, if the article is on a British topic, you would expect day month year. (WP:STRONGNAT)
  • Perhaps consider a line break between the two producer names, to look neater. Having said that though, should Mortensen be included as he doesn't seem to have a producer credit?
  • Usually the infobox chronology for studio albums contains only studio albums. (ie. I wouldn't include the Hell Demo)

Lead

  • Make sure that the lead adequately summarises the rest of the album. (WP:LEAD) All sections seem to be covered, a little more detail could perhaps be added.
  • "...a fact which raised the profile of the release" - I'm not sure, but this could perhaps be slightly clearer - "this release" or "Enter the Grave's release". I don't know, see what you think.
  • Should Rock Band Network be in italics? I know it is in our article on it, but I can't quite work out why.
  • "...as well as topics such as..." - topics such as may be redundant here
Reworded.
  • "...a serial killer, Countess Bathory and witch burnings" - this sounds slightly strange given that Countess Bathory is known as a serial killer too.
Reworded.

Recording

  • "decided to send a request by email to producer Flemming Rasmussen "for a laugh"; " - could this be clarified? Presumably they did actually want to work with Rasmussen. Was it "for a laugh" because they didn't expect such a high profile producer to agree to work with them?
In my opinion, yes it was because of that. However, I'm not sure I can clarify this because it'd be conjecture on my part.
  • "...Matt Drake googled Rasmussen's name..." - as this is quite a new word, I'd link to Google (verb), or maybe even consider rewording slightly to sound less informal
Reworded.
  • The chronology of this story is slightly out because as it reads, it's as if they emailed Rasmussen, and then Drake googled him.
I've reworded the sentence in an attempt to clarify. Basically, the band thought of emailing him, googled his name, and then emailed him via his website.
  • "The producer replied a few days later, asking "Send me some of the tracks over"." - this is slightly awkward and could perhaps be improved by paraphrasing him rather than quoting.
Paraphrased.
  • "Drake emailed a number of mp3..." - is this correct? It doesn't sound quite right to me, but I don't know... "a number of mp3 files" maybe?
Agreed. Reworded to "mp3 files".
  • "Soon after the band performed a live set at Tottenham Court Road, London's Fopp store..." - what is a Fopp store? (That's rhetorical; I love Fopp! Not all readers will know what it is though) Maybe clarify that it's a record store. "Tottenham Court Road, London's Fopp store" also sounds slightly strange - is that it's official name?
I've added the word "record". The location in London is specified to clarify which London area Fopp store the band performed at, given that London had more than one Fopp store at the time.
  • In the caption for the music sample, Rock Band should be in italics
  • I'm not sure if there's a bit too much quoting in this section. Quotes can be good, but sometimes too many quoted words and partial sentences makes it sound a bit awkward. Perhaps try to paraphrase a bit more?
  • YouTube should probably be linked
  • The review excerpts seem a bit out of place here. I know they're specifically about the production, but couldn't they be included in the critical reception section?
I don't feel the comments are out of place here, given that the section deals with the production. I've actually used previous FAs like Christ Illusion as a guide, which uses this given structure.

marketing

  • I'd link "streaming" to Streaming media, some may call that overlinking, but I think it would be helpful
  • Decibel magazine should be Decibel, and in italics
  • "an exclusive red 7" single vinyl" - is that correct? Maybe I'm showing my ignorance here, but it sounds a bit weird. Not "vinyl single"? or "single on vinyl"? Just ignore me if I don't know what I'm talking about... :)
  • "two unreleased demo tracks -" - this hyphen should be an emdash
  • Rock band - italics

Themes

  • "inspired" is repeated a bit
  • Maybe explain a little who Countess Bathory was
  • "a giant tank war machine" is "tank" an adjective here?
I believe so, therefore I have changed "tank" to "tank-like".
  • Words inside quotes shouldn't be wikilinked (MOS:QUOTE)
Reading the MOS, I feel here the words being linked is warranted.
  • "...Enter the Grave contained "songs about such need-to-know topics as John Rambo ("First Blood"), sharks ("Killer From the Deep") and, umm, thrash ("Thrasher") abound in all their escapist ridiculousness" - this doesn't quite work grammatically. The abound in all their ridiculousness doesn't fit with contained songs about
Reworded.

Reception

  • Sometimes you say "released in Europe" and sometimes "released outside North America" - they're not the same thing. Was it released elsewhere? I'd stick to whichever is most accurate.
Done.
  • Huddersfield Daily Examiner - italics
  • "eighties" → "1980s"
  • "Terrorizer dubbed Enter the Grave ..." - presumably a writer for Terrorizer, not the magazine itself
The album was featured in a year-end list published by the magazine; year-end lists are always voted on by all of the magazine staff.

Apart from all of that (!) it's looking pretty good. I haven't checked references, so make sure that they all go where you expect, that they all back up what they claim to, and that you haven't inadvertently introduced any close paraphrasing as that will all be checked at FAC. Hope this has been of some help. --BelovedFreak 11:39, 14 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Main page appearance: Nigel Kneale

[edit]

This is a note to let the main editors of Nigel Kneale know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on April 18, 2012. You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/April 18, 2012. If you prefer that the article appear as TFA on a different date, or not at all, please ask featured article director Raul654 (talk · contribs) or his delegate Dabomb87 (talk · contribs), or start a discussion at Wikipedia talk:Today's featured article/requests. If the previous blurb needs tweaking, you might change it—following the instructions at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests/instructions. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. The blurb as it stands now is below:

Nigel Kneale (1922–2006) was a British screenwriter from the Isle of Man. Active in television, film, radio drama and prose fiction, he wrote professionally for over fifty years, was a winner of the Somerset Maugham Award and was twice nominated for the British Film Award for Best Screenplay. Predominantly a writer of thrillers which used science-fiction and horror elements, he was best known for the creation of the character Professor Bernard Quatermass. Quatermass was a heroic scientist who appeared in various television, film and radio productions written by Kneale for the BBC, Hammer Film Productions and Thames Television between 1953 and 1996. Kneale wrote original scripts and successfully adapted works by writers such as George Orwell, John Osborne, H. G. Wells and Susan Hill. He was most active in television, joining BBC Television in 1951 as one of its first staff writers; his final script was transmitted on ITV in 1997. Kneale wrote well-received television dramas such as The Year of the Sex Olympics (1968) and The Stone Tape (1972) in addition to the Quatermass serials. He has been described as "one of the most influential writers of the 20th century", and as "having invented popular TV". (more...)

Harrison article topics

[edit]

Hi LuciferMorgan. Thanks for your compliment, and the suggestion. I can't say I've ever thought of going for the GA Topic before, but in a way, I guess, I do think in terms of a topic anyway – that is, song articles working in tandem with, and/or complementing, their parent album's. (When planning the structure of each song article, for instance, I find I give quite a bit of thought to which of an album's more general themes are typified by the song and could therefore be explored in the article.) I'll definitely give it some serious consideration now.

Thanks for the message – because I wouldn't have known about wikipedia's article topics without your mentioning it! Best, JG66 (talk) 06:30, 26 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, feel free to "waffle on", LM(!). You've given me plenty to think about ... And yes, even though I talked above about song articles and their parent album, the most obvious example of a possible GA topic is the Concert for Bangladesh group, as you laid out. I've got more to add to the film article, so that would be the next step.
Regarding my going FAC with articles I've helped get through GAN, it is, as you say, all down to time and patience. People have asked in the past, and a few reviewers have been generous enough to suggest that some of the Harrison song articles are ready to put forward, but I'm always reluctant to commit to the process. I keep thinking of the time I'd lose when there are so many Harrison articles left to start or improve on – so far, I'm still stuck in the 1970–76 era! Also, most wikipedia readers don't even notice the FA gold star or green GA symbol in an article, but they do notice the lack of information provided for any number of well-known Harrison songs, surely – "Blow Away" and "All Those Years Ago" come to mind. I hear what you're saying though, and the more I hear along those lines, the more likely I am to go ahead and bite the bullet sometime!
Thanks for your advice and encouragement, LuciferMorgan, it's very kind of you. You've done a great job with that Christ Illusion featured topic, by the way. Cheers, JG66 (talk) 01:16, 27 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Well, thanks again for the generous comments, LM. But in some ways, it's so easy to write in-depth articles about one of the Beatles, because of the sheer volume of literature about them: I find I'm spoilt for choice when it comes to compiling notable points about one particular song/album/event. That's especially so with George Harrison, because his songs mean something and invariably link with an issue that's of considerable notability in its own right.
And thank you for your offer to help out if I do decide to go FAC and some point. We'll see! With the sound samples – yes, I need to get an education on the how-tos first, but they're definitely something I intend to add. I'll probably add them in a wave, across all the articles. Ah, so much to do ... Best, JG66 (talk) 02:07, 28 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

On a related note, I've started a discussion about a suggestion made during this FAC (User talk:Figureskatingfan/Sesame Street Sandbox 2). There hasn't been any discussion about it, probably because no one is aware of it, so I thought that I'd try and elicit involvement. If you have an opinion, please go and express it. Thanks. A strange one

[edit]

Hi LuciferMorgan, hope you're well. It seems that someone else has taken a bit of a shine to those Harrison articles you were very complimentary about! If you're not too busy, would you be able to look in at User talk:Quadell#mirror images? A very strange situation, regarding a new Harrison biography, which … well, it basically rips off Wikipedia's Harrison album and song articles.

If you felt like hitting "helpful" on my Amazon review (signed as "HariG"), which is linked from Quadell's page, that would be excellent. I'd simply like to ensure that the review is helpful/popular enough to register in the listing's main space. Quite understand if you'd rather not, of course. Many thanks, LM. Possibility of providing your input on a Peer Review for Regine Velasquez's entry

[edit]

Hi LuciferMorgan

I'm writing to ask whether you would consider having a look at the article. I'm aware that you've been extensively involved with PRs before. I've given it a major rewrite and complete overhaul. I began working on the article late October when it looked like this and somehow ended up rewriting the whole thing and aiming for potentially FA. This isn't a process I've been through before, but I have been reading the reviews here in preparation, and am familiar with FAC demands. If you have the luxury of time, I would very much appreciate a fresh set of eyes and happily address any concerns you may have.

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Montana - A Love Story.jpg

[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Montana - A Love Story.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator seven days after the file was tagged in accordance with section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.

ATTENTION: This is an automated, bot-generated message. This bot DID NOT nominate any file(s) for deletion; please refer to the page history of each individual file for details. Thanks, FastilyBot (talk) 01:04, 22 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you today for your share to Loveless (album), "about a very influential and critically-acclaimed album by alt-rock band My Bloody Valentine"! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:25, 4 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Category:Icarus Witch albums requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If you're interested in editing the main page blurb, you're welcome to do so at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/July 5, 2023, but note that a coordinator will trim the lead to around 1000 characters anyway, so you aren't obliged to do so. If you wish to make comments on other matters concerning the scheduling of this article, you can do so at Wikipedia talk:Today's featured article/July 2023.

I suggest that you watchlist Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors from the day before this appears on Main Page. Thanks and congratulations Jimfbleak - talk to me? 15:15, 7 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Complete Works Vol. 2 (Spiritualized).jpg

[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Complete Works Vol. 2 (Spiritualized).jpg.

Thank you. — Ирука13 08:39, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
