For your stewardship of hundreds and hundreds of articles, across many years. ~~ AirshipJungleman29 (talk) 14:18, 29 October 2024 (UTC) |
- Thank you very much AirshipJungleman29! It means much coming from a user who has done the same for many years. HistoryofIran (talk) 19:13, 29 October 2024 (UTC)
Help a new user out?
[edit]So, there is this person which I believe has got several accounts/IPs which they use to edit different articles, to avoid detection- and they are not good news for me. Can you help? Here are some examples of their rather odd editing habits:
You might be wondering, why out of all the people on Wikipedia am I telling this to you, well it seems you are familiar with this sockpuppeter, and can give answer me as to whether or not the account and IPs all belong to the same editor which I think they do, or whether I have an over-active imagination. Perhaps they are different people who got up to similar unconstructive things, who knows. HyperShark244 (talk) 19:32, 4 November 2024 (UTC)
- Missed this one over at Barelvi movement! [9] HyperShark244 (talk) 19:40, 4 November 2024 (UTC)
- Oh, and one thing to note- the big problem here is the IPs. 39.62.206.38 (talk), the IP that was behind the edit in example [9] above, has got around two dozen edits on their record! If you start an investigation, please investigate as many of the of the IPs as you can, as these IPs cause the most disruption. HyperShark244 (talk) 20:13, 4 November 2024 (UTC)
- Hi HyperShark244, I'll take a look. HistoryofIran (talk) 20:27, 4 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks, that is indeed the LTA SheryOfficial. These two however [10] [11], don't seem to be connected to them (different IP geolocations, different conduct/habits compared to SheryOfficial, the user would have also probably been caught in the recent SPIs if they were a sock of SheryOfficial.). HistoryofIran (talk) 20:48, 4 November 2024 (UTC)
- I've filed an SPI [12]. --HistoryofIran (talk) 21:14, 4 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you, I appreciate this. Now, the reason why I included Abdu Mia and the IP in the examples I gave to you on Shah Ismail Dehlvi is because of how quickly they restored their edits over a portion of time, and the fact that after Abdu Mia’s edit was reverted, an IP came and restored their edit- notice the similarity here to SheryOffical's behavior? If Abdu Mia is not a sockpuppet of Shery, is the IP a sockpuppet of Abdu Mia and can this count as sock puppeteering, especially if Abdu Mia continues this habit in the future? Also, can it be safe to assume that the other recently active IPs such as 39.62.223.58 from here are also SheryOffical? Again, thanks for your efforts. HyperShark244 (talk) 21:42, 4 November 2024 (UTC)
- Oh and I forgot to mention, Abdu Mia, sock puppeteer or not, appears to be a WP:SPA who is WP:NOTHERE to improve Wikipedia, all they do is remove large amounts of sourced content and add unverified content based on their own whims in a single article repetitively. HyperShark244 (talk) 21:59, 4 November 2024 (UTC)
- Seems highly likely that Abdu Mia and the IP are the same person. WP:SOCKPUPPETRY is more like editing through another user account/IP in secret. They didn't seem try to do it in secret, I don't even think they know that its important they stick to their user account. So far they're indeed showing WP:SPA-like behaviour, but they have very few edits right now (and no warnings on their talk page either, I would advise enabling WP:TWINK, so you can easily give autogenerated warnings), so it's not worth to do anything about it right now, as action likely won't be taken. HistoryofIran (talk) 23:26, 4 November 2024 (UTC)
- And yeah, 39.62.223.58 is definitely SheryOfficial. I've updated my SPI to include that as well. HistoryofIran (talk) 23:31, 4 November 2024 (UTC)
- Disruption at Barelvi movement, LTA came back. HyperShark244 (talk) 08:04, 5 November 2024 (UTC)
What disruption are you on about? You're adding baseless information to an encyclopedia and reverting me without any reasonable evidence? 39.62.223.58 (talk) 08:13, 5 November 2024 (UTC)<--- sock of User:SheryOfficial- More suspicious account/IPs to checkout:
- Barelvi movement
- 182.191.133.127 from [13]
- Deobandi movement
- 182.191.75.219 from [14]
- Amb (princely state)
- 39.62.141.198 from [15]
- User:Apni_Baat from [16]
- Not sure what all this is about exactly and I think the odds of multiple people getting up to these strangely similar unconstructive things, while a chance, is very low. HyperShark244 (talk) 08:29, 5 November 2024 (UTC)

Why did Apaugasma think I was Shery?
[edit]On the one side Shery makes false accusations against me [17], says that I want "blantant false information" to be kept on Wikipedia [18], and now this? I did not even add that whole Shafi'i thing to Barelvi movement- it was already there. What on earth made Apaugasma think I was Shery? Yes we have the same topic areas, and that's how I came across them in the first place, here! Tell me, is this kind of stuff normal around here, because if it is, I would rather not edit Wikipedia again. Do you know how uncomfortable expericinces like this are? Oh, and it looks like I am "unrelated" to Shery- surprise. [19] HyperShark244 (talk) 14:11, 5 November 2024 (UTC)
- I'm sorry that it made you uncomfortable, I'm sure that was not the intention. SheryOfficial is unfortunately very persistent and has pulled various tricks throughout these past 6 years, including editing against themselves. HistoryofIran (talk) 14:21, 5 November 2024 (UTC)
- I do apologize if you felt weirded-out by my emotional comment- I understand why Apau did what they did. However, you should know what made me feel uncomfortable was the false accusation, not the investigation itself. I did not like being called a sleeper agent or whatever it was, nor being considered the same person as someone like Shery. Some people cannot take jokes, others being shouted at, and I guess my weakness is false accusations. Note that in my investigation I called Shery’s self-declared IP sock highly abusive for false accusations, and not disruptive editing. If I myself have made any false accusation against anyone on Wikipedia without realizing, then I retract and apologize. Know furthermore, my life is busier now than a few weeks ago, and if you see me no longer editing in the future it is not because of what has happened between me, Shery and Apau. - Hi SheriffIsInTown. Their edits were seemingly not an improvement, I can see I've already reverted this user elsewhere as well. I've reverted them at Ahvaz, removed some unsourced info and responded to them on the article's talk page. HistoryofIran (talk) 00:01, 18 November 2024 (UTC)

LTA id?
[edit]Hey, do you happen to know the case name for the LTA typified at Special:Contributions/217.164.84.114/24; Special:Contributions/176.205.172.32/28; Special:Contributions/5.31.212.83/28; Special:Contributions/83.110.171.185/20—as you've reverted them a lot. I swear they must have one, but I haven't found it yet. Thanks in advance. Remsense ‥ 论 19:30, 17 November 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Remsense. Unfortunately not. I couldn't find anything when I looked into the history of the articles they love to add unsourced info, and I don't think I've seen anyone ever bring it up. Seems there isn't one. HistoryofIran (talk) 23:51, 17 November 2024 (UTC)

Hoaxing?
[edit]Hi, HoI. I came across a {{db-hoax}} nomination, tagged by CoconutOctopus, of Battle of Sulaymaniyah (1806). Looking at author Nuraddin historys13's other contribs, and noting a past hoax deletion by Rsjaffe of Siege of Baghdad (1148), the most likely reading to me is that everything by this user is a hoax, and then the ostensible conflict many are a part of, Qajar-Wahhabi War (recently created by Astroteric) also seems suspect... But I will concede I have little expertise in this topic area and I recognize the possibility that all the offline cites are legitimate and there's just no English sources on the Web. Could I ask your expert opinion? -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (they|xe) 22:58, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
- And a ping to JBW now that he's deleted the former. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (they|xe) 23:14, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Tamzin. Majority of the citations in Qajar-Wahhabi War doesn't strike to me as WP:RS (eg citation 1 is by Mousa Shubairi Zanjani, not even a historian. Citation 9 and 10 seem to be primary sources.). The cited "The Rise of the Wahhabi Movement and its Impact on the Arabian Peninsula", allegedly by Routledge, doesn't even seem to exist.
- The cited Wahhabism: A Critical Essay is attributed to a completely different person for some reason. I took a quick look at the source, since it should certainly mention this event now its only about the Wahhabists. However, I didn't find anything. In fact, the only sort of war that the source talked about was with the Ottomans (i.e. the Wahhabi War). Iran at War: Interactions with the Modern World and the Struggle with Imperial Russia by Maziar Behrooz has a chronology table for important events in the period 1808–1811 (pages 151-153), which doesn't mention any Iranian conflict with the Wahhabis, but it does mention the Wahhabi War again as "Ottoman Saudi-Wahhabi War".
- In other words, yep, seems like a hoax. HistoryofIran (talk) 00:24, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks so much, HoI. Does this analysis hold for the remaining articles by Nuraddin historys13? If so, I'll probably nuke and block NH13 and take Astroteric to SPI. I guess Qajar-Wahhabi War will need AfD since Coeusin challenged the PROD there, unless they feel otherwise per your analysis above. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (they|xe) 00:29, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
- I wouldn't rule out the possibility that some of the events happened in some sort of way. But with not one single proper citation, I'd say its better to be safe and delete them (or least draftify), also due to WP:NOTABILITY concerns. All these articles seem very identical with many of the Middle Eastern conflict related articles that have been created by new, red userpages these past years. HistoryofIran (talk) 01:04, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
- Hmm. If it's at all borderline, probably best to run this all through AfD. Would you like to or should I? I'll start an SPI either way. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (they|xe) 01:24, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
- I'll gladly start the AFDs. HistoryofIran (talk) 01:25, 22 November 2024 (UTC)

- Hello to you both! I contested the PROD because I saw some references in the article and they seemed legit then, so I thought the attempt to delete the article came from some naming POV issue with the also new user who nominated it. I have no real opinion on the subject matter and if this is a hoax, nuke away and my apologies. Cheers, Coeusin (talk) 02:01, 22 November 2024 (UTC)

- Thank you for notifying me, Tamzin. I spent quite a while checking this account's editing history. I came to the conclusion that everything I checked was hoaxes. Some supposed sources don't seem to exist, some exist but are certainly not reliable sources, some exist but have no connection at all to the subjects of the articles, etc etc... I also made my own searches for information about the subject of the articles. In some case I found nothing at all, in other cases only wikis, social media sites, etc etc... I was close to the borderline for blocking and looking into how many pages should be deleted (thinking it might be all of them) when I decided it was too far past bedtime, and I would leave it until tomorrow (i.e. today). Unfortunately, for reasons I won't bother to go into, I hadn't got back to it until I saw Tamzin's notification. However, having read the discussion above, and seeing that I'm not the only one to think this is a serial hoaxer, I am spurred on to take action now.
- I must say that this person has put in an enormous amount of work in making all of the hoaxes look convincing, with fake references and so on. What a pity they didn't choose to put that amount of work into constructive editing instead. JBW (talk) 15:36, 22 November 2024 (UTC)

- Hi HyperShark244. I’ll take a look in a moment. HistoryofIran (talk) 13:03, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
- Only 39.62.0.0/16 seems somewhat worth reporting, as SheryOfficial is still using this as recent as yesterday [20], as yourself also noticed. Though others seem to be using this range as well. The user account you included doesn't seem to be them, not the same patterns. HistoryofIran (talk) 14:25, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
- OK. I didn’t find anything that I would consider an obvious giveaway from Apni_Baat, however I did see some suspicious things, which is why I thought it was a good idea to request for a check on them. Also would you recommend adding 182.191.0.0/16? This is the cluster of IPs behind [21] [22], and recently, [23]. HyperShark244 (talk) 15:13, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
