- Wikipedia in-joke? Hrm, nope, haven't seen it yet, will have to check again to see what you're referring to. And thanks! I always loved potent potables... And the "potholes" sorta can refer to the "Roads" portals that some folks love to work on a bunch... Can you cover for me?
Crisco, I'm not going to be around for a few days, and I haven't been able to catch up on some DYK stuff that I should have. I'm hoping that you'll have the time and be able to do better than I have, so I'm flying through the nominations list in the hopes that I'll spot these noms where I'd seen problems, but hadn't gotten back to see if the fixes had been okay.
The three noms I could find:
- Template:Did you know nominations/2005 Pepsi 400
- Template:Did you know nominations/Samsung Ativ Tab
- Template:Did you know nominations/List of Presidents of Pakistan
I'd also appreciate it if you'd keep an eye out for things like the Gibraltar promotion max (one in any 24 hour period; I just had to move one back two prep areas because the hooks would have been back-to-back); there are only three approved hooks left after the latest two promotions. Many thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 06:40, 31 January 2013 (UTC)

Did you know... that Cary Grant appeared in The Eagle and the Hawk in 1933?

Gimnazija Mostar DYK
Hi! I feel bad for troubling you with this sort of stuff but I think the photograph of Gimnazija Mostar is of very good quality and that it would look quite refreshing at the main page. Would it be possible to delay featuring the hook (currently in Preparation area 2) until it could be featured along with the photograph? Also, the reviewer and I agreed that the second alternative hook would be better than the original. I am sorry that I forgot to strike off the other two hooks to make it easier for you to pick the "right" one. Again, I am truly sorry for troubling you. Surtsicna (talk) 09:46, 5 February 2013 (UTC)
- I'll be happy to change the hook, but I'm afraid the image is a no go. The farmhouse image is a bit more interesting and we shouldn't have two pictures of buildings close together. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 09:48, 5 February 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks! I would not mind delaying the hook for a day, two or more (if necessary to find room for the image), but if there is really no chance for that to work, I'll understand. Cheers, Surtsicna (talk) 10:01, 5 February 2013 (UTC)
Picture question
Try a Selective Gaussian blur, about 2-3 pixels wide, with a relatively low max delta. It's not as bad as it could be, but you'll need to fiddle with the settings a bit to get it right. =) Adam Cuerden (talk) 11:18, 5 February 2013 (UTC)

Bears and Man images
Hi Crisco. A couple fair use questions. I've uploaded a new, smaller version of this file:[1]. I wasn't sure of what the desired resolution is - is this small enough to meet the requirements? In regards to this one, I'm looking at other fair-use screenshot files to figure out a proper rationale. Some of them seem pretty weak as well. You've got some film article experience, any advice? Or is it a lost cause with that one. Best, The Interior (Talk) 22:37, 5 February 2013 (UTC)
- The title card is peachy, I've already deleted the old version and removed the tag. Non-free screenshots are a bit of a pain. WP:NFCC#8 says they must be used with contextual significance, and WP:NFCI says they can only be used for critical commentary. So a screenshot, used in Manhunter while describing the visual style, is acceptable, but a screenshot in a plot summary is not necessary for an understanding. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 23:07, 5 February 2013 (UTC)

Hey Crisco, can you take a look at this and give a second opinion. I'm assuming that DYK image rules are the same as FAC, but not being certain, wanted your opinion. One of the three articles has a picture a of a dead climber that I don't think is PD - but it's one of those turn of the last century type deals where the photographer might or might not have died 70 years ago & so on. Can you have a look? Thanks. Truthkeeper (talk) 19:53, 6 February 2013 (UTC)
- Replied there. Although the article should be free of copyright vios, it is sadly not uncommon for reviewers to neglect to check images which aren't run with the hook (so, in other words, in practice it's less strict than FAC). — Crisco 1492 (talk) 22:42, 6 February 2013 (UTC)
- I checked the sources so that should be fine. At first glance I wasn't worried about the image, but because there are three articles began to worry I'd missed something (wouldn't be a first for me!). And in worrying overlooked the article about the photographer! Duh! Thanks for the extra set of eyes. Truthkeeper (talk) 22:49, 6 February 2013 (UTC)
- You're welcome. It would really help to have the life span on the description page, so I think I'll add that. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 22:51, 6 February 2013 (UTC)

- Sorry, but it's the same crop, but with a better resolution. It's a FP too.--Citron (talk) 12:16, 8 February 2013 (UTC)
- What ? It's a FP on Commons, so it's a FP, I don't lie ! The new is noisy but it's more clean, I has fixed the first upload, it was damaged AND noisy. I remind you that this is an underwater photography. It's not different image, why do you say that ? Just HD version, same Image, same rights ! I don't understand your annoyance, acknowledge my work on this image, it seems normal.--Citron (talk) 12:56, 8 February 2013 (UTC)
- I'm finding it very hard to maintain good faith with you. This is the English Wikipedia, an image selected for picture of the day on the English Wikipedia must be an FP on the English Wikipedia. The image you have tried to insert several times is not an FP on the English Wikipedia, and thus cannot be shown as POTD on the English Wikipedia.
- As for you uploading the image over the old one on Commons, it is a definite violation of Commons:Overwriting existing files. And I quote: "Files that have been awarded a special status like Commons Featured Picture (or the equivalent on another Wikimedia project) should never be overwritten - the status applies to a particular file version, and even minor changes should be uploaded as a new file." You should upload that... monstrousity... as a separate file. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 13:08, 8 February 2013 (UTC)

- The image you have tried to insert several times I do this one time, not exaggerate please. Anyway I am the editor of the image, see the difference with the original.
- Ok for Commons:Overwriting existing files, so I must uploaded and nominated again this image, just because it's HD and restored version ? It turned on its head, a bit.--Citron (talk) 13:27, 8 February 2013 (UTC)

DYK queue swap?
Hi Crisco, do you think it might be possible to swap the sea urchin DYK at the top of Queue 3 with my Gibraltar DYK from the top of Queue 5? I see that the latter is due to run between 00:00 and 05:30 London time, according to Template:Did you know/Queue; it would be nice if the Gibraltar DYK could run during Gibraltar's daytime hours, rather than in the small hours of the morning (local time). The sea urchin DYK doesn't seem to have any time considerations. Prioryman (talk) 22:33, 6 February 2013 (UTC)
- I think the last Gibraltar hook before yours was run less than 24 hours ago, so doing so would violate the restrictions which are (unfortunately) still in place. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 22:39, 6 February 2013 (UTC)

The fact was ... that the American three-dollar coin (pictured) may have been designed to make buying stamps easier? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Three-dollar piece. You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and it will be added to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |

DYK for Heuristics in judgment and decision making
Hi Crisco 1492. I had recently nominated an article for DYK and, reading the rules, realised that, per quid pro quo, I was obliged to review another nomination. I chose what I thought was the earliest nomination not yet reviewed. It happened to be this Heuristics ... one, on a topic I was not familiar with and frankly, almost too long to read. I reviewed and passed the nomination: Template:Did you know nominations/Heuristics in judgment and decision making in, I believe, good faith. You have since commented and applied a template to the article. I apologise for causing such an issue. As initial reviewer, what do I do now? Do I go back and change my review because the article now has a template? Do I notify the nominator? Once again, sorry --Senra (talk) 12:06, 9 February 2013 (UTC)
- No, you can still count it as a QPQ. Don't sweat it too much. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 14:05, 9 February 2013 (UTC)
- (I know what your local time is so no worries about a rapid response) QPQ does not concern me; I would gladly attempt reviews on one or more extra DYK's—my own time permitting. I am more concerned about the status of my review of this nomination subsequent to your rejection. With respect to this review, are there any procedural next steps that I am obliged to undertake? --Senra (talk) 14:55, 9 February 2013 (UTC)
- Nope, the onus is on the nominator. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 14:58, 9 February 2013 (UTC)
- I sincerely hope I do not irritate you with this additional posting. My motivation is to relearn the DYK rules so that I can, in future, more actively participate in the reviewing process. As I stated, "I am reluctant to disagree with [you]" but I did feel that the article I reviewed, and passed, met with the DYK eligibility criteria and DYK review criteria as I understood them. I do accept that the article deserves the {{essay-like}} template which you subsequently placed; some example issues include: "well-publicised, jubilant winners", "explains this and several other ways" and Ignorance (subjects were not ignorant, which is too loaded; Ignoring would be more accurate here). I believe, however, that the spirit of DYK is to encourage the further development of new or expanded articles; not to present finished articles on the main-page. Does your post-review templating of this particular article work within that DYK spirit? --Senra (talk) 14:04, 11 February 2013 (UTC)
- As I said, there was nothing wrong with your review. It's just that we need to be extra careful with these types of articles, especially as there is a history of subpar articles, some loaded with copyvios, in that field (although not from the same writer). — Crisco 1492 (talk) 23:18, 11 February 2013 (UTC)

Why did you close the main Page section
Come on!!! I hadnt even thrown a Hitler reference yet! TheOriginalSoni (talk) 07:45, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
- And that's exactly why, as it was downspiraling so fast I expected a reference to come any minute. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 07:47, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
- On a more serious note, what was the power as a sysop that you
abusedused to close the thread? TheOriginalSoni (talk) 07:53, 13 February 2013 (UTC)- Any user could have closed the thread. If you think it was abuse, feel free to report me to WP:ANI. As I stated above, the discussion was going nowhere fast and I felt that personal attacks were likely to come if everyone kept arguing. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 07:55, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
- That was more tongue-in-cheek than my actual impression of your closing.
- So what was the actual policy under question? There ought to be some guideline related to closing of such threads, right?
- And what it is about using :: or :*. I dont see how either is better/different from the other. TheOriginalSoni (talk) 07:59, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

- And if there were going to be PA, it wasnt coming from my side. I was actually being very careful not to be doing anything of the sort there. TheOriginalSoni (talk) 08:00, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
- Just to be safe. I think WP:NPA and WP:CONSENSUS are clear enough reasons. As for :: vs. :*, one makes a dot and the other doesn't. There's also a difference between :* and **, but I'm not too clear on that. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 08:12, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
- But how does NPA come into effect here, since there was no personal attacks yet? Is there any guideline which specifically talks about preventional action?
- But is there any difference in the context where they are used, or are they interchangable all the time? TheOriginalSoni (talk) 08:21, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
- Between :: and :*? I don't think so. But between :* and **... yes.
- Like this
- As for the NPA, preemption when a discussion looks to be downspiralling out of control is a good enough reason in my opinion. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 08:23, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
- So its all based on just good judgement, and there are no guidelines or policies which actually talk about preemption? TheOriginalSoni (talk) 08:26, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

- The reason I added the section inside was because I saw a reply by Grapple that was clearly after the section was closed. Do you mind removing that as well? (My first comment after the closing of the section was an edit conflict, that I had written before knowing that it had closed, and so should be there.) - Erm, really? And where is the commentary in the article related to these images. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 15:31, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
- Furthermore, I don't see how, with free examples of the form, non-free images can't be mentioned or discussed without having to show them. Their absence doesn't hinder understanding of their composition as it's a simple leap from, say, a Rubens nude to a Freud one. GRAPPLE X 15:37, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

- Indonesia are yet to play cricket at ODI level, but the national team does play in regional tournaments against other "minor" cricketing nations. I believe the national teams last outting was in the 2011 ICC EAP Cricket Trophy Twenty20 Division Two in Samoa, so it's quite a few steps away from ODI level, which at present is restricted to sixteen members of the ICC. Who knows though, Afghanistan came from nowhere to play at ODI level, so perhaps Indonesia can too! Howzat?Out!Out!Out! (talk) 15:22, 14 February 2013 (UTC)

Proposal to implement TAFI that affects OTD
Discussion is ongoing about how to implement Today's articles for improvement on the Main Page. A proposal is being worked on with general community support, where TAFI is put it on the left hand side, below the DYK content. In order to balance the Main Page, part of this proposal involves increasing the OTD content by one item per day. Since you are an editor involved in the process, I would ask if you could comment on the proposal. --NickPenguin(contribs) 17:30, 14 February 2013 (UTC)
Ian Hummer DYK queue
I see you put Ian Hummer in Prep 1. This does not appear to be the right queue given the gametime, but I am not sure what forthcoming actions will be taken to get the queues back on schedule.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 01:20, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
- Tony, you asked for February 16. If you wanted something more specific, such as February 16 at [whatever the game time is], that's what you should have asked for. What is the game time? As noted on WT:DYK, the hook will be up starting at 09:48 Eastern Time. That means it will be removed at 18:03 Eastern Time (just after 6pm); it gets eight hours and fifteen minutes due to the gradual movement forward to get to regular times. If the game starts during this time period, that's probably as good as you're going to get. BlueMoonset (talk) 01:43, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
- More or less what Bluemoonset said. If the game starts at 8 p.m., we just bump it back to prep 2 once it has been emptied. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 02:43, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
- The game is at 7PM eastern. I think this straddles two different queues unless we get back on schedule. You might only have to back up one queue.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 05:07, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
- In that case we can bump it back one prep once the current set is promoted. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 05:12, 15 February 2013 (UTC)

Dont do that
I'll have too many questions for you.... (your last comment)
National Hero of Indonesia (huh? since when was a collective group of people in the singular?) was just tabled and Indonesianised - who in the english speaking world wants to know the Kepres number? I reverted it, and fear that this will be a tendency if it is not evident already, wp en pages created in the new order style list (which says nothing) with the reverting of english text and explanations... this might require some concerted effort to explain to otherwise nationalistic lists at all costs (it was obsessive in new order era - lists say nothing - perfect item that doesnt have dialogue or grey areas...)
arrgghhh... etc etc sats 01:51, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
- The singular form of something, like an award's title, is fairly standard. See Nebula Award for Best Novel for another example. If we want to make National Hero of Indonesia a featured list (which is something we really should do, and we have images galore for it) we should probably have a table. The Keppres' can be references, or the Ministry's website. The version you reverted, however, was an absolute mess. You were right to remove it. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 08:46, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
- (Talk page stalker) I agree that the singular form is standard, unless you have a separate "List of National Heroes of Indonesia", which is really unnecessary forking. Keppres actually has a standard English translation "Presidential Decree No. XX of XXXX" that should be used instead of the gibberish abbreviation most readers would not understand. —Arsonal (talk + contribs)— 10:25, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
- If we need it at all. Maybe as a reference? — Crisco 1492 (talk) 10:26, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
- Hi there Arsonal (youre always welcome to stalk by the way, :) ) - keep up the good work! &Crisco - The full english translation of the pres decree I agree should be a reference not a column in an over-repetitious table... If you want a featured list - it is my humble opinion that the english text summaries are vastly important for the non-indonesian reader who would not associate with name only column - with as few columns as possible... specially if they say the same thing for 40x

If you want a featured list - it is my humble opinion that the english text summaries are vastly important for the non-indonesian reader who would not associate with name only column - with as few columns as possible... specially if they say the same thing for 40x
- If we need it at all. Maybe as a reference? — Crisco 1492 (talk) 10:26, 17 February 2013 (UTC)

Precious again
questions and good faith
Thank you for getting another Bach cantata to the Main page, the last one for a while. I remember meeting you over Handel's "He was despised", and your approval in good faith after reasonable questions. I had archived "despised" but returned it to my user page, did you know? - You are an awesome Wikipedian!
A year ago, you were the 28th recipient of my PumpkinSky Prize, it still applies, repeated in br'erly style. Thanks also for missing the photographer, again. I put "Letting go of the past" on top of my talk, for reformation. Update: the last Bach cantata before Lent this year was BWV 22, and He was despised is up for TFA, but not on my user, Reformation is ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:52, 19 February 2013 (UTC)

Well either not many people noticed, or not many people cared to express an opinion either way... Mind you, as I rarely scroll down to see the POTD anyway, I would have missed the TFA/POTD link if I didn't know about it! Look forward to pairing up "our" respective sections in due course again. I'm trying to keep TFAs scheduled at least 14 days ahead, so hopefully we can between us spot any glaring pending clashes or any shuffling that could be done for a good juxtaposition. IP vandalism
Hey. The article about me has been vandalized multiple times by the same person. They also sent me an email saying some really nasty things. While that goes with the territory as an article subject, if I was *not* the subject of the article I'd be warning the hell out of this IP. Is there anything we (the community, not me) can do, or do I need to report it to admin noticeboard? Thanks! SarahStierch (talk) 13:40, 21 February 2013 (UTC)
- Warned once, level 3. If s/he does it again, I don't mind going straight to block. Semi-protect is a no-go as it's only one problem user thusfar. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 13:44, 21 February 2013 (UTC)

Fettering of discretion in Singapore administrative law
Theoretically you are correct, but the phrase "fetter its discretion" is not exactly common so the meaning of the hook is not easy to comprehend, which is why I think it's unsuitable as a quirky. Gatoclass (talk) 10:05, 22 February 2013 (UTC)
- Perhaps, although I'd rather not replace it with something so pedestrian as a "retired" person coming back to work. Michael Jordan (MJ in my edit summamry) did the same thing... although at least he got a movie deal out of it. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 10:52, 22 February 2013 (UTC)

Thank you for the message concerning this image's fair use rationale. Are you seriously contending that the image is replaceable? As a long-term incarcerated felon, Mark Chapman would be quite a challenge to obtain a free photo of! The existence of Category:Mug shots seems to imply that this picture is far from exceptional; there seem to be a lot of mug-shots used to illustrate articles on living but incarcerated subjects. I have clarified the image's fair-use rationale, and I do wish to contest this proposed deletion. Please reconsider. --John (talk) 11:33, 23 February 2013 (UTC)
- I don't mind putting this one through XFD, although the others are decidedly not entirely pertinent to the article. Photographs of incarcerated persons have been considered replaceable several times, although I can't quote a precedent off the top of my head. I'm remembering a Papuan freedom fighter. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 11:42, 23 February 2013 (UTC)
- Ok. If we could find that it was an FBI mugshot we would be on firmer ground as I believe those files are PD. --John (talk) 12:08, 23 February 2013 (UTC)
- I think you're right about that, but I doubt the FBI would have been involved in a murder that did not cross state lines. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 12:11, 23 February 2013 (UTC)
