Chronology?
[edit]Can anyone confirm the notion that the symphony actually received its first performance before the opera was completed? I seem to remember something like that but cannot be certain yet. Wspencer11 13:39, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
Indeed, Mar. 12 1934: Furtwangler & BPO rm
Additional References
[edit]I've removed the tag; presumably the published work alone would be reference enough for a description and there is now a book length study that confirms the background material.. Sparafucil 03:49, 2 July 2007 (UTC)
Mathis der Maler (opera)
[edit]The former title provided a useful clue to seekers of Mathis der Maler (symphony); is there really any reason for the change? Sparafucil 00:46, 17 August 2007 (UTC)
- I'd go further: the symphony is clearly the primary target. It clearly should be "Mathis der Maler" for the symphony and "Mathis der Maler (opera)" for the opera. --Jubilee♫clipman 19:28, 23 November 2009 (UTC)
- I've moved this page back to ...(opera) and requested an admin move for the other page in WP:RM (over the history) --Jubilee♫clipman 19:40, 23 November 2009 (UTC)
Caption
[edit]The lead image caption says, as I write this: "John the Evangelist by Matthias Grünewald, regarded in Hindemith's time as a self-portrait". I can see readers look there first, and be confused. They may not know what Matthias Grünewald has to do with Mathis Maler, - not all will understand the German title, nor know that Mathis = Matthias. I suggest to leave the "self-portrait" thing to the body, or a footnote. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:05, 14 September 2020 (UTC)
