One mistake: in 1942 Eastern Galicia was part of General Gouvernment, so your border of Greater Germany is placed in the wrong place. The same applies to Bialystok area. 62.152.143.144 (talk) 17:19, 5 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (Image:HMS Jersey (F72).jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:HMS Jersey (F72).jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 07:24, 13 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Year page formatting of multiple events

Hello, I'm sending you this message since you were involved in the August 2005 survey on year pages. As I don't know if you've gathered, somebody has been fighting for a change to the house style on how to notate multiple events on the same date. A discussion is currently in progress - your contribution would be appreciated! -- Smjg (talk) 15:36, 15 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Turing, Wolfram, Smith

Thanks for your note at the Wolfram (2,3) talk page; I replied there. We had had quite a knock-down, drag-out debate at the time of the press-release (and Slashdotting), which has simmered down to a level more appropriate for mathematicians :-) So thanks for discussing stuff before making sweeping changes. I'm sure we have room for improvement and I agree that the presentation of Pratt's objections is too low-key. Pete St.John (talk) 16:58, 21 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Template:List of dreadnought battleships of the Royal Navy requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section T3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a deprecated or orphaned template. After seven days, if it is still unused and the speedy deletion tag has not been removed, the template will be deleted.

If the template is intended to be substituted, please feel free to remove the speedy deletion tag and please consider putting a note on the template's page indicating that it is substituted so as to avoid any future mistakes (<noinclude>{{tranclusionless}}</noinclude>).

Grdbot disambiguation of botanists

Hi there! I was wondering if this was at all necessary. I seem to remember there being some guideline or suggestion on redirects that aren't double redirs, broken links, or result from dab pages to the effect of "If it isn't broken, don't fix it." Specifically, in the case of the botanist author abbreviations, there are tons of redirects of this kind. I'm happy that they direct to the article, but it seems like wasted effort when the redirect is valid anyway. If we're just going to have a bot come along and fix valid redirects in articles, what's the point of having them? I suppose my main complaint is that it's making a mess of my watchlist ;-) Something with which I can cope. Cheers, Rkitko (talk) 01:43, 24 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I am amazed at your patience in cleaning up after this user! If it had been me I fear I would have long since had harsh words with him. Gdr 23:26, 1 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. My apologies for spamming your watchlist. You're right that it's not necessary to avoid these redirects. Gdr 23:54, 1 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I had some time and, as odd as it sounds, enjoy the tedious edits required to fix those pages. I must also thank you for checking all of those names and adding the authorities. I should have not assumed all were correct. It seems as if Cottonapple4 has taken a hiatus. If the user returns, I'll be interested to learn where he/she was getting his/her information from. I do wish there was a little more substance to the articles, but they'll be expanded in time. Cheers, Rkitko (talk) 21:51, 2 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm, I think our editor reappeared as another user name, Pomeapplepome (talk · contribs), which appeared one day after Cottonapple4 stopped editing. If you've got the time, I'd appreciate some help cleaning up the contributions =) --Rkitko (talk) 13:54, 19 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Robot assisted relinking

Hi! I noticed the good work you did on relinking Augustine > Augustine of Hippo. Could you do the same job for the links that point to Origen and should instead link to Origen of Alexandria?

Thanks. Keep up the good work. --Dampinograaf (talk) 00:25, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No, Origen is clearly a case for Wikipedia:Primary topic disambiguation, i.e. Origen points to Origen of Alexandria, with any disambiguation (if necessary) at Origen (disambiguation). This is because there's only one Origen of any note. In the case of Augustine there are two notable men with that name: Augustine of Hippo and Augustine of Canterbury, although the former is sufficiently more notable that there is an arguable case for primary topic disambiguation there too. Gdr 19:28, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Maps

Hi, I was wondering if you were interested in re-drawing a map for the Battle of Aachen? Basically, I have a few maps from a number of sources I'm using. I wanted to ask if you were interested in using them to draw a map that I could use in the article. Thanks for your time, regardless. JonCatalán(Talk) 01:48, 14 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I notice that this category you created is unpopulated (empty). In other words, no Wikipedia pages belong to it. If it remains unpopulated for four days, it may be deleted, without discussion, in accordance with Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion#C1. I'm notifying you in case you wish to (re-)populate it by adding [[Category:23 BC births]] to articles/categories that belong in it.

I blanked the category page. This will not, in itself, cause the category to be deleted. It serves to document (in the page history) that the category was empty at the time of blanking and also to alert other watchers that the category is in jeopardy. You are welcome to revert the blanking if you wish. However, doing so will not prevent deletion if the category remains empty.

If you created the category in error, or it is no longer needed, you can speed up the deletion process by tagging it with {{db-author}}.

--Stepheng3 (talk) 21:22, 10 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Same thing with Category:774 BC. Though I guess that was actually created by your bot. --Stepheng3 (talk) 22:02, 10 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

question...

Do you think as I suggested here some of the images you have uploaded qualify for crown copyright, and are thus now in the public domain?

Cheers! Geo Swan (talk) 23:12, 22 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

David Page, the guy who runs navyphotos.co.uk wrote this explanation for how the photos were acquired. In most cases, he does not know who took the photo or who owns the copyright. So some of them may be Crown copyright, but no-one knows for sure. David Page gave permission in e-mail for Wikipedia to use the photos (this only has relevance should any copyright subsist in him, which it probably doesn't). There used to be a template on all images from navyphotos.co.uk that explained some of this, I think, but it was deleted. Gdr 23:48, 22 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (File:HMS M1.jpg)

Thanks for uploading File:HMS M1.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

The article Artabanus V of Parthia has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

This article is already present as Artabanus IV of Parthia.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. StAnselm (talk) 21:52, 29 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for File:Coin of Arsaces II of Parthia.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Coin of Arsaces II of Parthia.jpg. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. A tag has been placed on File:William Roxburgh.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F2 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image page for a missing or corrupt image or an empty image description page for a Commons-hosted image.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. MSU Interview

Dear Gdr,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at [email protected] (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your nameHERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at [email protected]. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chlopeck (talkcontribs) 23:32, 14 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Johann Heinrich Linck

Hello Gdr,

I am working on the Linck family on fr:wikipedia, fr:Heinrich Linck and fr:Johann Heinrich Linck. The French page of the second seems to be a translation of the page you created in English. You mention five years ago that Johann Heinrich Linck] made contributions to the natural history of fishes. I don't find any information about that activity in his biography [1] and I cannot acceed the references you cite. Could you provide me a reference ?

Thanks, Cymbella (talk) 22:33, 27 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I think I must have got confused between J. H. Linck and H. F. Linck. Many apologies. I'll remove the claim. Gdr 14:18, 28 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much. I have now a second question : are Heinr. Fr. Linck (the author of "Versuch einer Eintheilung der Fische nach den Zähnen", Magazin für das Neueste aus der Physik und Naturgeschichte, 6.Bd.,3.St., 1790, p. 28-38 [2]) and Johann Heinrich Friedrich Link the same person ? Did the botanist Link also studied fishes ? I could not find any mention of that, but I notice that Mag. Neueste Phys. Naturgesch. is published in Göttingen, where Link was student in 1789 [3]. - Regards, Cymbella (talk) 19:58, 28 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The article Reverse lookup has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Neologism

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. There needs to be a minor map correction to Eastern_Front_1942-05_to_1942-11.png

The small area that contains the arrow pointed toward Izyum is for the 2nd Battle of Kharkov and Operation Fredericus that occurred in May 1942. It probably should be given a different color to show that it wasn't part of Fall Blau.

Hominini

Dear GDR,

I am not sure who the originator of this common file really is, but the file info says you were the original "en" poster. It seems to me there is a problem with the branch "hominini" as it includes Pan. One of the English article references HOMINIDAE – African Great Apes which definitely does not include Pan under hominini tribe.

I want to use it in a Thai translation of the "Human evolution", but I am not sure how I should proceed to perhaps "correct" the problem, but right now I am thinking of creating another image separately. If you could help, however, all the articles referencing the image will be corrected too.

Replaceable fair use File:HMS Sheffield (D80).jpg

Thanks for uploading File:HMS Sheffield (D80).jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Stefan2 (talk) 23:31, 27 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Clark Russell requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Extended confirmed protection

Hello, Gdr. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:48, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

Hi Gdr.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Notification of pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity

Information icon Following a community discussion in June 2011, consensus was reached to provisionally suspend the administrative permissions of users who have been inactive for one year (i.e. administrators who have not made any edits or logged actions in more than one year). As a result of this discussion, your administrative permissions will be removed pending your return if you do not return to activity within the next month. If you wish to have these permissions reinstated should this occur, please post to the Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard and the userright will be restored per the re-sysopping process (i.e. as long as the attending bureaucrats are reasonably satisfied that your account has not been compromised, that your inactivity did not have the effect of evading scrutiny of any actions which might have led to sanctions, and that you have not been inactive for a three-year period of time). If you remain inactive for a three-year period of time, including the present year you have been inactive, you will need to request reinstatement at WP:RFA. This removal of access is procedural only, and not intended to reflect negatively upon you in any way. We wish you the best in future endeavors, and thank you for your past administrative efforts. Speedy deletion nomination of HMS Grenade

Speedy deletion nomination of HMS Grenade

Hello Gdr,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged HMS Grenade for deletion. This has been done under section G6 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an unnecessary disambiguation page.

If you feel that the page shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions.

Slatersteven (talk) 16:46, 9 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Notice

The article Battles of Trenton and Princeton has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Kind of an unnecessary little article/pseudo-disambiguation page. We have lengthy, high-quality articles on each of these two engagements, there's not much point having a whole separate article just to say "hey these two battles that took place a year apart were notable successes for George Washington"

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. ♠PMC(talk) 12:56, 28 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Nomination of Queen of clubs for deletion

The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article. Lord Belbury (talk) 15:04, 19 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
