Naylor

Still needs a few more words. Philafrenzy (talk) 23:26, 13 October 2014 (UTC)

Agreed. I'll try (only a prediction) to find time tomorrow. Edwardx (talk) 23:34, 13 October 2014 (UTC)
I have consulted my tea leaves and they suggest that you will be successful. I predict that Philharmonic Hall, London and George Lattimore will soon appear on the front page. Philafrenzy (talk) 23:38, 13 October 2014 (UTC)
You were half right - I was too late for Lattimore. I blame his surname planting a subliminal message. Sorry about that. Edwardx (talk) 23:13, 19 October 2014 (UTC)
That prediction rate might mean that I could have a career in newspaper horoscope forecasting. Pity about Lattimore and Darnley too but Darnley was slightly sketchy without a strong "story arc". Seven days is just too short. You could propose changing it to 10. Why not when they stay in the queue for months anyway? Did you take the book? Philafrenzy (talk) 23:23, 19 October 2014 (UTC)
Yes, I've been slipping - too busy trying to earn a crust. And getting distracted by ballet editing ahead of next Saturday at Covent Garden. 10 - why not 14? Edwardx (talk) 23:28, 19 October 2014 (UTC)
"Newest" in an encyclopedia could quite reasonably mean 14. There could be a cut off by which time they had to have a review which would introduce a deadline at the other end too which would concentrate minds. You didn't take that book did you? I knew it! Philafrenzy (talk) 23:49, 19 October 2014 (UTC)
14 would be even better than 7. I'll think about a proposal. Yes, the London Encyclopaedia is here! Edwardx (talk) 08:54, 20 October 2014 (UTC)
Ah, so you won the arm wrestling competition after all. Congratulations. Next time I will bring a better book and a set of boxing gloves. Start training now. Philafrenzy (talk) 09:38, 20 October 2014 (UTC)
I envisage this developing into a uniquely Wikipedian form of Olympics where middle aged men with beards compete in various indoor sports in order to win prizes of (naturally) reference books. The sports will include: darts, beard-pulling, intransigence, staring, mumbling and a knobbly knee competition. I anticipate winning many medals. Philafrenzy (talk) 13:48, 20 October 2014 (UTC)

Plaquey

Happy summer, Sir. What do you think of my tables? Should I add boring coordinates? Are any of the plaques near you? List still quite incomplete, it came out of respective borough categories, which were deleted. I'm loving your Swinging 60's efforts...you got this? I love it! Gareth E Kegg (talk) 10:07, 31 July 2014 (UTC)

Great work Gareth, I will try to add to it. As for the coordinates, someone has tried to encourage me to do that for my listed pub articles. I started adding coords to new ones, but I'm not sure I'll keep at it. I always tell people to focus on adding what they enjoy (as long they provide references, even bare URLs). For the rest, there are plenty of wikignomes about. Edwardx (talk) 19:09, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
I photographed 30 plaques yesterday! I'll do a tally soon to find out missing ones. Have tentatively started formatting in the new style, am quite dreading doing the rest. I hope you like my DYK hook for Martin Gilliat. Gareth E Kegg (talk) 10:20, 22 October 2014 (UTC)

The Wikimedia UK Barnstar
Dear Edward, thanks for all your help at Saturday's editathon, and particularly for your intro and welcome speech.
this WikiAward was given to Edwardx by Jonathan Cardy (WMUK) (talk) on 11:26, 28 October 2014 (UTC) for contributions to the UK chapter
Thank you kindly. A most enjoyable day. Edwardx (talk) 10:48, 30 October 2014 (UTC)

Note that today's issue has several features about London pubs as British Pub Week starts on Friday. A good excuse for a Wikipedian pub crawl... Andrew (talk) 13:04, 28 October 2014 (UTC)

Thanks. And maybe an excuse for me to shift my efforts from ballet back to pubs... Edwardx (talk) 10:49, 30 October 2014 (UTC)

CAMRA Meeting

Are you attending the CAMRA meeting on Sunday at the Penderel's Oak? I hear there will be Wikipedians there too. Philafrenzy (talk) 17:29, 5 November 2014 (UTC)

Yes, I can confidently predict my attendance. Edwardx (talk) 19:52, 5 November 2014 (UTC)
"...above the stamp shop on Boulevard Prince Henri" I thought I was reading one of @Philafrenzy:'s articles! These bewildering graphs have necessitated a stay in a Vaduz sanatorium, adieu. Gareth E Kegg (talk) 00:56, 6 November 2014 (UTC)
Surprised anyone is still using that old scheme. We have a new one now. This is how it works ... (Contd. p. 94) Philafrenzy (talk) 01:36, 6 November 2014 (UTC)
More surprised to read that there is still an actual "bricks and mortar" stamp shop left somewhere. I'm trawling through the Rich List right now, filling in the "missing" billionaires. Edwardx (talk) 15:38, 6 November 2014 (UTC)
It's the ones missing from the Rich List that you need to find. Philafrenzy (talk) 15:56, 6 November 2014 (UTC)
Alas, there's that pesky WP:OR to avoid. Edwardx (talk) 16:10, 6 November 2014 (UTC)

Special award for a building on an ‘At Risk’ register (UK only)

Big congratulations on your Wiki Loves Monuments success! PanydThe muffin is not subtle 13:35, 7 November 2014 (UTC)

Thank you kindly. Photographing buildings "at risk" may well have been overlooked by most WLM entrants. Uploading 62 images of Govanhill Baths and writing the WP article possibly boosted my chances of getting one of the two special awards. Edwardx (talk) 17:09, 7 November 2014 (UTC)
Great picture. Philafrenzy (talk) 18:51, 7 November 2014 (UTC)

Kate Lechmere

DYK that Kate Lechmere was "blessed" in BLAST? Much more to come but nothing to beat that hook I suspect. Philafrenzy (talk) 16:31, 6 November 2014 (UTC)

Yes, I've been watching Kate's progress. On the list. Edwardx (talk) 19:39, 6 November 2014 (UTC)
Thanks, frustrating that apparently not one of her paintings survives. Philafrenzy (talk) 19:49, 6 November 2014 (UTC)
On the plus side, it makes for a good "ALT1" hook. Edwardx (talk) 20:18, 6 November 2014 (UTC)
Very true. Some describe her as a cubist but since nothing (not even photographs?) survives I don't known how they know. And Wyndham Lewis was hung upside down. Philafrenzy (talk) 20:31, 6 November 2014 (UTC)
I have since found a single photograph of her painting something but I don't know that I would say it is exactly cubist. Philafrenzy (talk) 18:58, 7 November 2014 (UTC)

If you want a DYK hook that they won't use, try one based on the knuckleduster here. There's more but I didn't include it for reasons of good taste. Philafrenzy (talk) 17:09, 10 November 2014 (UTC)

Don't forget Chang please! Philafrenzy (talk) 19:35, 10 November 2014 (UTC)
Brilliant idea - done. Edwardx (talk) 00:09, 11 November 2014 (UTC)
You are a prince among men, I feared you might think it was racist! (it's not) Philafrenzy (talk) 00:11, 11 November 2014 (UTC)
Thank you kindly. I'll try to do Kate tomorrow. Edwardx (talk) 00:17, 11 November 2014 (UTC)

Failed to predict the Second World War. If you read the columns it really is piffle. They obviously dropped him during the war because they couldn't have him making wild forecasts that might run counter to the war effort. Philafrenzy (talk) 11:45, 11 November 2014 (UTC)

Shame they don't use the "War on Terror" as an excuse to ban all newspaper astrology - at least there would be some worthwhile outcome. Edwardx (talk) 13:30, 11 November 2014 (UTC)
If only there had been some sign that Germany might be a threat. Some clue that he could have picked up on... Philafrenzy (talk) 13:50, 11 November 2014 (UTC)

Audrey White

Would I have created that article without that picture? Let's be honest, probably not. Philafrenzy (talk) 13:31, 17 November 2014 (UTC)

And would I have read it and added it to my DYK nom list? Edwardx (talk) 14:51, 19 November 2014 (UTC)
Hope nobody from Wigan is reading it. Philafrenzy (talk) 14:59, 19 November 2014 (UTC)
A fairly safe assumption. Edwardx (talk) 15:02, 19 November 2014 (UTC)
I could reply to that but it's better I don't. Philafrenzy (talk) 15:04, 19 November 2014 (UTC)

Hello. You might be interested in looking at Sigi Ziering and Marilyn Ziering, both potential candidates for DYK's. Marilyn's page probably needs to be expanded, especially the 'early life' section. My only concern might be that having a DYK might ignite latent antisemitism from some Wikipedians. What do you think?Zigzig20s (talk) 12:42, 19 November 2014 (UTC)

Both now added to my to-be-nominated list. Will try to do some work on them. And I'm fairly tough on antisemitism. Edwardx (talk) 14:58, 19 November 2014 (UTC)
Thank you. Their daughter Amy is a prominent documentary filmmaker, and her husband is also a filmmaker, but I got bored trying to work on his page, because there isn't much about him--he only made a few films. I am not sure yet about the other children. One of them is a lawyer I think. In any case, let me know what happens on my talkpage if you can. (BTW, incredible that Cargill's founder did not have a page??)Zigzig20s (talk) 15:36, 19 November 2014 (UTC)
Would you please create a page about Austen Cargill? I tried to google him but I think I found something about his son perhaps (who should probably have his own page too, but better be chronological I think)? (Sometimes those families use names again and again among cousins, so we'd have to double-check though.)Zigzig20s (talk) 16:37, 19 November 2014 (UTC)
For some reason, I didn't realise I had created Austen S. Cargill II months ago. So, he is not Austen Cargill's son, but James R. Cargill's.
Easy to lose track of what one has and has not created - happens to me often enough. Yes, I was shocked to find out that the founder of Cargill didn't have a page. Really goes to show that people who say that all the important articles have already been started are quite wrong. Austen Cargill now started. Interesting how our interests overlap. Edwardx (talk) 00:24, 20 November 2014 (UTC)
Great. It will be great to expand all these pages if we can. I wonder if they are Presbyterian.Zigzig20s (talk) 01:02, 20 November 2014 (UTC)
Plenty more to do on both the Ziering and Cargill/MacMillan families. I've just started John H. MacMillan Sr. This family tree is essential to unravel all of the similar-sounding names. Enough for tonight! Edwardx (talk) 01:16, 20 November 2014 (UTC)
That looks great. More or less a family tree. It is also possible to add more relatives to the infobox as I sometimes do. Btw, you may be interested in looking at Marc Stern. Not enough on him yet to suggest him for DYK though. Have a nice day and keep me posted.Zigzig20s (talk) 15:29, 21 November 2014 (UTC)
I've added Marc Stern to my list. It's long enough and you have until 28 November to find something interesting for DYK. Edwardx (talk) 01:01, 23 November 2014 (UTC)
Perhaps, ...that Marc Stern, the Chairman of the TCW Group, is also the Chairman of the Los Angeles Opera? (A bit obvious, but I am not sure what else to say lol).Zigzig20s (talk) 16:23, 23 November 2014 (UTC)

Could you add this as a 5x expansion? Several interesting points including a gown known as "The Discourager of Hesitancy". Philafrenzy (talk) 15:09, 21 November 2014 (UTC)

Check out the first pic. Philafrenzy (talk) 00:48, 23 November 2014 (UTC)
Great work. 16x expansion. Not sure if I would have hesitated. And I've not hesitated to add it to my to-be-nominated list. Funny how names rise and fall in popularity - no one would change their name to Dolores nowadays. Edwardx (talk) 00:57, 23 November 2014 (UTC)
There were a lot of Dolores then. Perhaps it will make a comeback. No pic of that actual dress in fact. Another one was called "Controlled Sin". I managed to work the Titanic into the article, soon I will be adding Herman Goering (really) so look out for that. Philafrenzy (talk) 01:05, 23 November 2014 (UTC)
Looking forward to Göring. Edwardx (talk) 17:37, 23 November 2014 (UTC)

Donald G. Tronstein

I was wondering if you thought it would make sense to create a page about Donald G. Tronstein. See his obituary in the LA Times, and he is also mentioned here, here, here. His son Mark is now President of the Rodeo Drive Committee. I know you managed to flesh out Fred Hayman, so I don't know if the same could be done here. Otherwise, it might be worth adding some info about him to Rodeo Drive. What do you think?Zigzig20s (talk) 18:21, 21 November 2014 (UTC)

Would you please suggest Jerome D. Mack for DYK? I will create his daughter Karen's page shortly. It would be good too to add more sources to use the Las Vegas Sun article a little less (but I thought it was a good place to start, and I always think it is critical to source everything on Wikipedia).Zigzig20s (talk) 02:14, 22 November 2014 (UTC)
Just added Mack to the list. Tronstein looks just about notable enough for an article, but my past experience suggests that going for a DYK on a more marginal figure can bring out the deletionists! I agree with you about sourcing - these days I cite almost everything that I add. Edwardx (talk) 01:09, 23 November 2014 (UTC)
Two possible DYKs: E. Parry Thomas (major overhaul) and Richard L. Bloch. But again, it's up to you. Would you like to create Tronstein's page?Zigzig20s (talk) 16:21, 23 November 2014 (UTC)
Have added Thomas and Bloch to the list. I'll pass on Tronstein, as my list of articles to create gets longer than the time I can spend on WP will allow. The business biographies that I focus on are FTSE-100 CEOs and billionaires. Tronstein doesn't make the cut - not successful/greedy enough! Edwardx (talk) 17:19, 23 November 2014 (UTC)
Cool. I'm sure I could start a stub, but not more for now. I will keep it at the back of my mind and if I come across more stuff, I will create it. For example, one wonders how he came to own a few buildings on Rodeo Dr, etc. But it's a fine line between being encyclopedic and prying (which I don't want to do). Never met the family, but I understand from BH acquaintances that his son is friendly.Zigzig20s (talk) 18:34, 23 November 2014 (UTC)
Btw, would you consider archiving some of your talkpage? I am in Australia where the internet is terribly slow, and it uses more bandwidth than necessary everytime I save a message on your talkpage, because the page is "heavy." Just a suggestion.Zigzig20s (talk) 18:36, 23 November 2014 (UTC)
Are you planning to create pages for William W. Cargill's children and their spouses as well?Zigzig20s (talk) 18:38, 23 November 2014 (UTC)
Another possible DYK: Henry Gluck. I am trying to figure out if his father was Maxwell Henry Gluck or not; also if Peter L. Gluck is his son, or not.Zigzig20s (talk) 21:09, 23 November 2014 (UTC)
I have no idea how to do this.Zigzig20s (talk) 11:34, 24 November 2014 (UTC)

DYK help

As I said, I don't know how to do it. Do you know another editor who might be able to help? (Btw, still very interested in the Cargills if you decide to go back to working on them.)Zigzig20s (talk) 17:32, 25 November 2014 (UTC)

I didn't know how to review other articles before my first one either. You just have to jump in and do your best. There is help in the reviewing guide. However, when it comes to choosing a nomination to review, ignore the guide's advice and start with the most recent articles. I try to choose articles about subjects where I have some interest and/or knowledge. Failing that, articles written by the more experienced editors are usually easier to review. Others will help you later in the process if your review is lacking in some way! Edwardx (talk) 19:02, 25 November 2014 (UTC)
Yes, I'll continue on the Cargills when I find time. I might get back to William W and add some more as I'm sure that a more interesting hook is possible. Edwardx (talk) 19:14, 25 November 2014 (UTC)

DYK for Kate Lechmere

 — Crisco 1492 (talk) 06:43, 3 December 2014 (UTC)

Hello Edwardx. Please be aware that your recent move of this article was discussed in 2013. The move discussion ended with No Consensus. I happen to remember this because I was the closer. Bear this in mind if you are planning to eliminate more of the 'Sankt' names. You may want to consider opening a formal move discussion. Thank you, EdJohnston (talk) 21:12, 1 December 2014 (UTC)

Oops. Didn't see that (as you no doubt realised). I think a good case for Sankt to St could be made, but I'm not sure that I have time right now. I'll try to revisit it soon. Edwardx (talk) 10:16, 4 December 2014 (UTC)

DYK

Have you completely withdrawn from DYK now? Philafrenzy (talk) 02:31, 3 December 2014 (UTC)

No! But, Ive missed my deadline for the Newman Arms. But it was only 812 characters anyway. Just too busy with work right now. Edwardx (talk) 10:18, 4 December 2014 (UTC)

Gardeny

Mayfair's secret communal gardens: Green Street Gardens, South Street Gardens and Culross Street Gardens. Beautiful, unwritten. [1] [2] Gareth E Kegg (talk) 00:54, 29 November 2014 (UTC)

Great idea. Need to find more time... Edwardx (talk) 10:19, 4 December 2014 (UTC)

Would you be interested in creating a page about Luxe Hotels, a hotel company which has three luxury hotels in Los Angeles? This sounds like this could be of interest to you. I am too busy to do it right now and thought you might find it fun. The trick is not to make it sound like an advert. Also their website does not give their company history, which is annoying. Let me know if it suits.Zigzig20s (talk) 17:32, 28 November 2014 (UTC)

Sorry, there is more than I thought actually. I might create a page about the hotelier; that seems easier to me than the hotel company!Zigzig20s (talk) 17:41, 28 November 2014 (UTC)
I've had a look. With just three mid-sized hotels, all in LA, you're going to struggle to find any critical commentary. Sorry, but I'm going to have to pass on this one too! Edwardx (talk) 18:33, 28 November 2014 (UTC)
I think I may find quite a bit (one is a voting location, another one is on Rodeo Dr, etc.). I will start with his bio. I will let you know if/when I create those pages.Zigzig20s (talk) 18:37, 28 November 2014 (UTC)
Thanks - I'll be happy to contribute. Edwardx (talk) 18:42, 28 November 2014 (UTC)
OK, I've started Efrem Harkham. Let me know if you are able to expand it a bit (especially the 'fashion' early career, which you might know something about? Fashion is not my world (posh hotels a little). I think his brother may be notable enough for a page as well--corporate director, but also businessman in the fashion and commercial real estate industries apparently. Then I really think the Luxe Rodeo Drive Hotel should have a page because it is on Rodeo Drive and home to many philanthropic events all the time...the Bel Air hotel is more low-key, but could probably do with a page as well. Let me know if you can help with any of this please. If you can reply on my talkpage, that's easier btw. Thank you.Zigzig20s (talk) 00:06, 29 November 2014 (UTC)
Just created his brother, Uri Harkham. Not sure if you are able to add more about his fashion business.Zigzig20s (talk) 15:30, 29 November 2014 (UTC)
OK so the Luxe Rodeo Drive Hotel was designed by Vicente Wolf. I actually didn't realise his page had been deleted before, but given that it is fully referenced and he has designed a lot of places, I hope it sticks. I wonder if he has designed anything in England? (I am not a fan of minimalism btw.)Zigzig20s (talk) 18:10, 30 November 2014 (UTC)
Hi again. I've created a userpage at User:Zigzig20s/Luxe Rodeo Drive Hotel. Are you able to help please? I will let it sit for a few days while I work on several other projects and RL.Zigzig20s (talk) 23:47, 30 November 2014 (UTC)
Great work. I've done a little copyediting here and there. Edwardx (talk) 10:28, 4 December 2014 (UTC)

Congratulations on getting your picture on the main page. Philafrenzy (talk) 23:51, 26 November 2014 (UTC)
Thank you. 11,882 views on the day! Edwardx (talk) 18:35, 28 November 2014 (UTC)
It's all down to your picture. Philafrenzy (talk) 15:06, 4 December 2014 (UTC)
Maybe. It certainly wasn't my mediocre hook. Edwardx (talk) 22:24, 4 December 2014 (UTC)
It's interesting, both Betty May and Brilliant Chang got around 8K but now traffic is down to almost nil. On the other hand Tony Blair, who I demoted from philanthropist to collecting tin rattler, gets about 1 million hits per annum as far as I can see. Philafrenzy (talk) 23:21, 4 December 2014 (UTC)

Cargill DYK

Thanks for crediting me for the Cargill article creation. Can I vote or not as a co-creator? I'm guessing not, but just wanted to make sure. Thank you. (Btw, I have moved the Luxe Rodeo Drive Hotel to a stub. Much more could be added.)Zigzig20s (talk) 10:28, 3 December 2014 (UTC)

I'm not clear what you mean by "vote". If you mean review, then no. I'm impressed with the number of sources you've found for that hotel. Edwardx (talk) 10:13, 4 December 2014 (UTC)
There is really more, especially about philanthropic events that take place there. Especially since the whole Beverly Hills Hotel/Sultan of Brunei boycot fiasco, many events have been moved to the Luxe or The Peninsula Beverly Hills. (Obviously the Wilshire is still doing fine.) Feel free to expand the page if you can. The owner is very interesting as well. I wish I were in BH to take pictures. You might find the restaurant/chef sufficiently interesting for an expansion as well.Zigzig20s (talk) 10:23, 4 December 2014 (UTC)
Yes, it's a shame that Wikipedia can't pay us to go on photographic trips. I was just about to suggest that you post on the talkpage of Wikipedia:WikiProject California/Los Angeles task force, but you're one step ahead of me! Great minds... Edwardx (talk) 12:01, 9 December 2014 (UTC)

This got nearly 20K - proof (if it was needed) that sex sells. Philafrenzy (talk) 16:53, 8 December 2014 (UTC)
Great to see all your hard work appreciated. Audrey had over 14K, and without a photo. Class sells too. Edwardx (talk) 10:29, 9 December 2014 (UTC)
Thank you for nominating them both and selecting the hooks. Audrey may have been classier but she didn't have artists falling over themselves to paint her did she? Philafrenzy (talk) 12:36, 9 December 2014 (UTC)

Of possible interest to you if you are able to expand this and possibly take it to DYK. If you live in London, you could even take a few pictures. I'd like to find a reference saying he was gay to add him to the WP LGBT Studies as well.Zigzig20s (talk) 01:04, 5 December 2014 (UTC)

Thanks. I've done a bit of copyediting. Article was 605 characters before you started expanding on 5 December and is now 1234, so probably too big an ask to get it to 3025 for a DYK 5x expansion. Edwardx (talk) 11:56, 9 December 2014 (UTC)
Yes, I didn't mean for DYK necessarily. Just that you may find it interesting.Zigzig20s (talk) 15:13, 9 December 2014 (UTC)
