It both owns and operates a number of Radio and Television station in Malaysia based in Kuala Lumpur (a national capital of Malaysia) which for launched terrestrial based in Kuala Lumpur (a national capital of Malaysia) that is owned by the Malaysian Government. At present RTM runs 8 national, 16 state, 7 district radio stations and 2 television channels. The main motto tagline name slogan from 1987–now present current is Teman Setia Anda (Your Loyal Friend). As of 2007, RTM controls about 17% of the television viewing market in the country, behind Media Prima with 54% and Astro with 29%. From this, RTM are known to have the worst rating for its television channel compared to others. Internationally compared to Malaysia neighboring country Indonesia, RTM is still far out of standard with the likes of RCTI (Rajawali Citra Televisi Indonesia) and SCTV (Surya Citra Televisi Indonesia). Improvement are made depending of the government budget.[1]
History
In 1946, RTM was established as Radio Malaya. It would be later renamed Radio Malaysia on 16 September 1963 with the transmissions beginning with its trademark words Radio Malaysia (Radio Malaysia). Television services under the name Televisyen Malaysia (TV Malaysia) or Malaysia Televisyen (Malaysia Television/Malaysia TV) started on 28 December 1963 in time for the national New Year celebrations in Kuala Lumpur and regional telecasts in the Klang Valley.
Five years later, in 1968 Radio Malaysia and Televisyen Malaysia (TV Malaysia) moved to the present Angkasapuri headquarters based in Kuala Lumpur. Televisyen Malaysia soon split the next year since 1969 with the launch of Rangkaian Dua (Network Two), its newest station while Televisyen Malaysia (TV Malaysia) was then renamed Rangkaian Satu (Network One).
Radio Malaysia later became Rangkaian Nasional (National Channel) in 1971 and became the nation's first 24-hour radio station.
Color television began since 28 December 1978 began on Malaysia 1 and since 7 May 1979 on Malaysia 2 by then only for Peninsular Malaysia broadcasts. By then both Radio Malaysia and Televisyen Malaysia "Network 1" and "Network 2" merged into Radio Televisyen Malaysia or Radio Television Malaysia (RTM) and the television channels renamed RTM TV1 (TV1) and RTM TV2 (TV2) although their official names were retained until 1987. A new logo plus two new separate slogans for RTM TV1 (TV1) and RTM TV2 (TV2) were also launched at the same time.
In would be only in Merdeka Day since 31 August 1980 when Sabah and Sarawak received color television with the first telecasts being the Hari Merdeka Parade on the Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur when colour television all full time and all full broadcasting since 1 January 1982 with RTM as the only and official television broadcaster for the event, which was aired live.
In 2005, the Ministry of Information announced their plan to digitalize nationalwide free-to-air television broadcasts led by RTM.[2] Trial broadcasts were undertaken, involving one thousand households in the Klang Valley from September 2006 till February 2007. According to the then-Deputy Minister of Information, Chia Kwang Chye, the trial received "very positive" feedback, i.e. "more than 60 percent said the quality of the signal ranged from good to very good. Over 88 percent said the picture quality improved, while 70 percent said the sound quality was better."[3]
RTM has prepared at least three new channels exclusively for DTV, namely RTMi, Muzik Aktif dan Arena, besides the two existing channels – TV1 and TV2 – via a multiplex which is transmitted at UHF channel 44, modulated at 64QAM.[4] Though the trials had been long over, the digital channels are (said to be) still active in test forms.
In addition, RTM would introduce regional TV channels for each state and territory in Malaysia, in such that each of these regions will have its own dedicated TV channel with localised content compared to national TV, making it about 20 TV channels for a digitised RTM[5] as part of the state broadcaster's three-year restructuring plan.[6] According to Information Minister Dato Ahmad Shabery Cheek, RTM is expected to launch its Digital Terrestrial Television services nationally in 1 January 2007.[7]
