Payal Rohatgi was born on 9 November 1973 ( age 36 years currently ) in Banjara Hills, Hyderabad, India. [5] She is the daughter of Veena Rohatgi and Shashank Rohatgi. She has a brother named Gaurav Rohatgi. She was brought up in a middle class family and grew up in Ahmedabad in Gujarat. She completed her schooling from Udgam School and did her engineering from L.D. College of Engineering, Ahmedabad. She is a computer engineer by education.[3]

Modeling

Rohatgi started her career by modeling for popular brands like Amul, Nirma, and Nescafe. She gained attention after appearing in a television ad for Cadbury's Temptations Chocolates. Around this time she also appeared in music videos by rock band, Silk Route and Indipop artist, Kay Kay.[4]

In 2002, she participated in the Femina Miss India contest. The same year, she won the Miss Tourism World in Medellin, South America.[3] After starting her career in Bollywood, Rohatgi has cut back on the number of products she endorses. However, she appeared along with cricketer Virender Sehwag in an ad film for Dabur's Lal Dantmanjan. The film was directed by Pradeep Sarkar. She was also seen in an ad film for Eveready battery in 2006 with Amitabh Bachchan, which was directed by Pradeep Sarkar.

Rohatgi made her Bollywood debut in 2002 with Harry Baweja's, Yeh Kya Ho Raha Hai?, a Hindi remake of the Hollywood teen flick American Pie.[3] In coming years, she appeared in the films, Plan (2003), Police Force (2003) and Rakht (2004).

In 2006, she got her major breakthrough with the film, 36 China Town, also starring Shahid Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, and Paresh Rawal.[4] Later that year in July, she appeared in the critically acclaimed, Corporate, in which she played the part of an item girl.

In 2007, her first release was Priyadarshan's film Dhol, produced by the Percept Picture Company. She played a positive second lead character, paired opposite Arbaaz Khan.

In August 2008, Rohatgi appeared in season 2 of the reality television show, Bigg Boss on Colors TV as a contestant.[6] She was involved in a lot of controversies relating to Rahul Mahajan, whom she dismissed as a 7 year old friend. The same year, she was seen in the adventurous game show, Khatron Ke Khiladi.[7]

In 2009, Rohatgi performed a comedy skit as a celebrity performer in Comedy Circus - Chinchpokli to China on Sony Television.[3]

In 2008, during the second season of the show, Bigg Boss, Rohatgi was romantically linked with fellow inmate, Rahul Mahajan.[9] The couple broke up later, with Rohatgi citing abuse and physical assault as the main reasons of their split.[10] Reports have also surfaced of her dating South African cricketer, Herschelle Gibbs in 2010.[11]

Social work

Rohatgi is actively associated with the cause of rehabilitation of drugs addicts and alcoholics and celebrated World Anti Drugs Day with them.[4] She is also actively working for an NGO Jeevan Dhara in Mumbai.[4]

Awards

On 2 May 2010, Rohatgi received her first award for excellence in the field of arts by International Creative Arts Society ICAS in Ahmedabad.
