BOL Network (Template:Lang-ur) is a media conglomerate based in Karachi.[2] The owner of the media group is a Pakistani businessman, Shoaib Ahmed Shaikh, who also serves as the CEO and chairman of the media network.”[3] The editor-in-chief of the group was Kamran Khan.[4] The media group houses print and electronic media. The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority granted radio and satellite television licenses to the BOL Network.[5][6] These licenses were suspended over reservations but later reinstated by the Ministry of Interior.[7][8]

History

The BOL Network was started by Pakistani businessman, Shoaib Ahmed Shaikh, in June 2013. Through BOL, Shoaib Shaikh wanted to change the current scenario of Pakistan's media industry by creating an independent media enterprise which will be free from all kinds of influences. The BOL Network emphasizes on portraying the soft image of Pakistan both nationally and globally. The BOL media network includes- Television Channels (News, Entertainment and Sports) - Digital Media (Web, Social Media & Media Apps) - Print Media (Newspaper and Magazines) - Cinemas & Movies - Theatre - Radio.[9]

In 2013, BOL Network announced that it would offer free insurance of up to Rs. 1 Crore to cable operators of Pakistan. Which made it the first entity to offer such a facility to Cable operators.[10][11]

After the suspension of the BOL Network and BOL News, the company was offered to be taken over in August 2015 by ARY Digital Network CEO Salman Iqbal, who said that the decision is taken in view to provide career protection to media industry and its workers.[12] The founder of ARY Group said the his media group would launch the transmission of the channel within three weeks.[13] On September 30, 2015, it was announced that the deal between the owners of BOL and ARY Digital Network had fallen through, and Salman Iqbal was no longer involved in the management of the company.[14]

Later, BOL introduced "BOL Ownership League" which made available a certain percentage of the collective ownership of the company for its members. Shares of this league are intended to be sold in the stock market and the returns to be redistributed among members of the league per their relative contribution to BOL.[15]

Locations and infrastructure

The head office of BOL Network is situated in Karachi and is called BOListan. The head office includes 33 studios. The multipurpose auditorium of the studio is named Aula. Other than Karachi, BOL's regional headquarters are also situated in Islamabad and Lahore that are currently equipped with Studios while other amenities have been operational as of 2015.[16] The network's regional headquarters in the provinces are reported to be established in future including regional offices among 19 other cities in the country.[16]

DSNG Vehicles

According to BOL Network, they have developed their own DSNG vans equipped with multiple wired and wireless cameras and remote controlled multicopters to acquire high quality aerial views to cover events they would be reporting. The vans house a mini-studio built with acoustic insulation to sound-proof the setting in order to to conduct exclusive interviews in addition to a built-in chroma-capability.[17]

BOL network spans on multiple platforms such as:[18]

  • Television Channels (News, Entertainment and Sports)
  • Digital Media (Web, Social Media & Media Apps)
  • Print Media (Newspaper and Magazines)
  • Cinemas & Movies

Channels

BOL Entertainment

BOL network started its second channel called BOL Entertainment.[19] Nabeel Zafar, a prominent Pakistani entertainer joined BOL Entertainment as its president and CEO.[20][21] Zeba Shehnaz and Haider Imam Rizvi, an industry pioneer in the Pakistani television industry, are also reported to have joined the channel among a list of others.[21]

BOL News

BOL News launched on May 19, 2015 and the test transmission aired on May 21.[22] Kamran Khan, Mubasher Lucman, Jasmeen Manzoor, Iftikhar Ahmed were reportedly a part of the network.[23] However, the channel's operations are suspended since October 2015.[24][25]

Launch marketing campaign

In 2013, upon the launch of the media group, the BOL network gathered gained above 2.5 million followers on its official Facebook page.[26]

In 2014, BOL Network upgraded more than 20,000 public transport vehicles in Pakistan.[27] These vehicles included auto rickshaws, buses and vans and were repainted in BOL theme for free that allowed the vehicle owners to get a fresh repaint while allowing BOL to market itself.[28] The company also announced a television set brand by the name of BG and were placed in market places initially relevant to BOL's campaign.[29]

Criticism and controversies

On October 15, 2013, the Hindustan Times reported that the entry of BOL media electronic player was backed by the ISI, which sparked controversy.[30] Later a corrigendum (an error in a printed work discovered after printing and shown with its correction on a separate sheet) was issued by Hindustan Times.[31][32]

In 2015, BOL became a part of another controversy when its founder, Shoaib Ahmed Shaikh's other company Axact was reported by The New York Times to be allegedly involved in extensive diploma mill accreditation scams. As a result its security clearance was withheld. The case is still on-going in the court and still to be decided.[33]

Following the allegations concerning the Axact scam, the launch date of BOL News channel was announced on May 19, 2015 and the test transmission was started on May 21.[34][35] On 23 May 2015, Kamran Khan, Asma Shirazi and Iftikhar Ahmad left BOL Network due to allegations concerning Axact.[36]
