Jared Scot Fogle (born December 1, 1977), also known as the Subway Guy, is a former spokesman for Subway restaurants. He gained fame for significant weight loss, attributed to eating Subway sandwiches, and became a prominent spokesman in the company's advertising campaigns from 2000 to 2015. In 2015, Fogle was investigated for allegedly paying for sex with minors and receiving child pornography; on August 19, 2015, he agreed to plead guilty in federal court to possessing child pornography and traveling to pay for sex with minors.[2]

Early life

Fogle was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, the son of Norman Fogle, a physician, and Adrienne Fogle, a teacher. Fogle was raised in a Jewish home with two siblings. Becoming a bar mitzvah while on a trip to Israel, he then was confirmed by his Conservative-Reconstructionist synagogue.[3] In 1995, Fogle graduated from North Central High School in Indianapolis.[4] He graduated from Indiana University in 2000 and then worked briefly in the revenue management department at American Trans Air.[5]

Subway campaign

Fogle first came to media attention in April 1999, through an article written in the Indiana Daily Student by a former dormmate about Fogle's weight loss.[6] Fogle was later featured in a Men's Health magazine article, "Stupid Diets. . . that Work!"[7] According to the article, Fogle had become obese by eating junk food and not exercising. Switching to eating at Subway, he changed his eating habits there to include healthier choices and smaller portions free of fattening condiments such as mayonnaise, which was followed by his significant weight loss. A Chicago-area Subway franchisee took the idea to Subway's Chicago advertising agency.[6]

Jared Foundation

In 2004, Fogle established the Jared Foundation, a nonprofit organization focused on raising awareness about childhood obesity through educational programs and tools provided to parents, schools, and community organizations.[12]

On April 29, 2015, Russell Taylor, director of the Jared Foundation, was arrested at his Indianapolis home on child exploitation, possession of child pornography, and voyeurism charges. Fogle severed all ties with him immediately following the arrest.[13] Taylor attempted suicide on May 6, 2015, at the Marion County Jail and was placed on life support.[14][15]

Personal life

Fogle married pediatric nurse Elizabeth Christie on October 14, 2001. They divorced on October 18, 2007. In November 2009, Fogle became engaged to teacher Katie McLaughlin[16] and the couple married in August 2010. In January 2010, People magazine reported that Fogle had gained 40 pounds but was planning to restart his weight-loss program to lose weight for his impending wedding.[17] Fogle and McLaughlin have two children together, a son and a daughter.[18][19]

On November 7, 2010, Fogle completed the New York City Marathon in 5 hours, 13 minutes and 28 seconds.[20]

As of 2013, Fogle's height was 6 ft 2 in (1.88 m), weighing 200 pounds (91 kg). He is reported to have a net worth of $15 million (USD).[1]

Criminal investigation and plea agreement

On July 7, 2015, the FBI and Indiana State Police investigators conducted a search at Fogle's Zionsville, Indiana, home. Computers and other electronic equipment were removed from the home.[21][22] The same day, Subway announced that they and Fogle mutually agreed to suspend their relationship.[23] Subsequently, Subway removed all references to Fogle from its website[24] and on August 18, 2015, announced via Twitter that Fogle no longer had a relationship with the company.[25]

Following their investigation, federal prosecutors released a statement in August 2015 that Fogle would plead guilty to one count of distribution and receipt of child pornography and one count of traveling to engage in illicit sexual conduct with minors. One of the 14 females was contacted by Fogle, who then traveled from Indiana to New York City where he paid to engage in sexual acts with her when she was 17 years old. Prosecutors allege that Fogle offered adult prostitutes a finder's fee to find him younger sex partners.[26] They also said that Fogle and Taylor, the former head of the Jared Foundation, traded pictures and videos of nude children as young as age six.[27] According to documents released by federal prosecutors, Fogle has also agreed to pay a total of $1.4 million in restitution—$100,000 to each victim.[28] Fogle faced up to 50 years in prison had he gone to trial, but as part of the plea deal prosecutors agreed to seek no more than twelve and a half years. In return, Fogle accepted a minimum sentence of five years. However, a federal judge could hand down a longer sentence.[27][29][30][31]

As a condition of his plea deal, Fogle will be restricted to only supervised contact or communication with minors upon approval of his probation officer. Supervised visits with his own children will be allowed only with pre-approval of their mother.[32] Upon release from prison, Fogle will be required to register as a sex offender for the remainder of his life, and undergo treatment for sexual disorders.[26] Following Fogle's plea deal, his wife stated she was filing for divorce.[28][32][33]
