Development

Bombay Velvet was initially to be produced by Viacom18 but finally Fox Star Studios decided to co-produce it with Phantom Films. The film is based on Gyan Prakash's book Mumbai Fables and set in early 1950's towards 1970's, before Mumbai became a metropolis. Prakash is the also script writer of the film.[6] Ranbir Kapoor will be portraying a street fighter, whilst Anushka Sharma will appear as a jazz singer, as well as his love interest in the film.[7][8] Director Karan Johar will make his full-fledged acting debut, where he will enact the role of the primary antagonist, Khambatta.[9] On Karans acting, Vikas Bahl of Phantom Films has said “I think there is a beautiful actor hidden in Karan. I simply love his ads. I’m sure he’ll make the character bigger than the actor.”

Ranbir Kapoor on his decision to do the film stated that, "There is no process in selecting the kind of work I do. I'm fortunate to be working with some of the best filmmakers. The script of "Bombay Velvet" just fell into my lap. I read it and I knew immediately that I wanted to be part of Anurag's grand vision, his innovative storytelling, his movie-making process; everything that he does so perfectly."

Filming

The first schedule of Bombay Velvet started in the third week of July, 2013 and continued till 1st week of September 2013.[10] The first schedule was shot at Sri Lanka's Ranmihitenna Mahinda Rajapaksa National Tele Cinema Park, Hambantota getting the distinction of being the first foreign film to be filmed there. Shootings was also carried out in Colombo, Galle and Pasikudah.[11] Deepa Mehta had opted to film Water and Midnight's Children in Sri Lanka and Kashyap too found the country historically more suited for his film.[12] The next schedule will start in February 2014.

Soundtrack

Music director Amit Trivedi has started the work on soundtrack and has said that the music of Bombay Velvet will reflect the age of 1960's Jazz era of Bollywood. The lyrics are being written by Amit's frequent collaborator Amitabh Bhattacharya.
