Evenkia

Evenkia (Russian: Эвенки́я eh-vehn-KEE-yuh) is a vast Siberian region in Krasnoyarsk Krai, the size of Turkey, but with a very sparse population — a mere 0.023 people per km², less than 20,000 people in total. Evenkia borders Taymyria to the north, Yakutia to the east, Irkutsk Oblast to the southeast, and the Krasnoyarsk region to the southwest and west.

• 1 Tungussky Nature Reserve — visitable by a permit obtained from the nearby village of Vanavara, this large patch of taiga in southeast Evenkia has a number of hiking trails, all leading to the impact site of the 1908 Tunguska Event.

Understand

Evenkia's population is about 60% ethnic Russian, but is named after its nomadic Evenk minority (~22% of the population), a small ethnic group that traditionally lives off reindeer herding, related to the Manchu of Northeast China and others in the Russian Far East.
