editDharwad and Hubli are twin cities of Karnataka. While Dharwad is educational and cultural centre , Hubbali is commercial hub. These cities have municipal corporation by the name Hubli Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC). Dharwar was part of Bombay Presidency during British rule of India. Dharwad is known as the 'Oxford of Karnataka' due to its universities and colleges.
Dharwad is the seat of learning with two universities, plenty of colleges and some very progressive schools. Hubli-Dharwad are the renowned seat of Hindustani music. Dharwad is also emerging as hub for automobile industry with big plants like Tata Construction (TELCON) & Tata Motors.

Also National highway 52 (NH 52) connects Hubli Dharwad to National highway 66 near Ankola via Kalaghatgi and Yellapura. National highway 52 connects Hubli to Solapur via Navalgund, Naragund,Kerur, Bagalkote, Bilgi cross, Kolhar, Bijapur, Horti and Zalki on another side.
National highway 67 (NH 67) connects Hubli twin city of Dharwad to Proddatur in Andhra Pradesh state via Shiraguppi, Annigeri, Hulkoti, Gadag, Lakkundi, Koppal, Hosapete, Toranagallu, Kudtani, Ballari ,Guntakal, Gooty, Anikireddypalli, Kolimingudla and Jammalamadugu.

There are daily buses from Bengaluru, Mangalore, Udupi, Davangere, Karwar, Bagalkot, Vijayapura, Hosapete, Ballari, Goa via Ponda, Mumbai, Pune, Satara, and Kolhapur to Dharwad city. There is a NWKRTC bus service at the frequency of 15 minutes from the city of Belgaum, Karnataka. Private buses also connect Dharwad to Bangalore, Mangalore, Mumbai, Pune and Udupi.
