Wikipedia Takes Manila is a planned photo scavenger hunt in the spirit of Wikipedia Takes the City to be held in Manila, the Philippines, organized by Wikimedia Philippines, the Philippine local chapter of the Wikimedia Foundation. This event is aimed at increasing the coverage of free photographs involving the City of Manila so that they can be used in Wikipedia articles which need pictures, as well as promoting awareness of Wikipedia in Manila. This event, the first of its kind in the Philippines and Southeast Asia, is being held as part of Wikipedia X, a series of events being held throughout the world in commemoration of Wikipedia's tenth anniversary. For Filipino Wikipedians resident in Metro Manila, this also serves as the Twelfth Filipino Wikipedians' Meetup in Metro Manila.

Everyone, Wikipedians and non-Wikipedians alike, is invited to participate in this contest. If you can form a team of up to three people and have a camera plus a love of the City of Manila, come join us!

Wikipedia Takes Manila will be on Wikipedia Day, January 15, 2011. The event will begin promptly at 9:00 am PST with the meeting place for participants at Paco Park, San Marcelino St., Paco, Manila. The awards ceremony for participants and party for guests meanwhile will be at Shakey's Pizza, Maria Orosa Ave. cor. United Nations Ave., Ermita, Manila.

Events of the day

Registration

edit

Wikipedia Takes Manila is open to all persons, Wikipedians or not. Registration for the event is a two-step process: the first step is online registration. The registration form is available here.

In online registration, participants must disclose their names, e-mail addresses and other required information so that the organizers can contact participants when needed. Wikipedia Takes Manila is a team event, and participants can choose to either participate individually or in teams. If you are only attending the Wikipedia X party, you may also use the same registration form.

The second step is on-site registration. Here, teams will verify the information entered during online registration and will receive the contest kit, including the final list of sites covered by the contest and the contest rules.

Scavenger hunt

edit

In Wikipedia Takes Manila, teams compete to take as many pictures of sites from a list of goals which lack Wikipedia articles, whose articles don't have pictures, or whose pictures are important to building the context of articles. There may also be recognition of excellent photographs of sites not on the list. Photography will be done on the day of the event.

Teams should remember the following:

  • Teams may have at most three cameras of any type (point-and-shoot, DSLR, etc.), one for each member of the team. Make sure that the memory cards of all cameras are empty before the event. To deter cheating, memory cards will be audited by the organizers before the event begins.
  • Pictures should, as much as possible, be clear, aligned and in focus.
  • Bring a notebook (or pad paper) and a pen (or marker) to note the sites you took.

A tentative list of sites may be found here.

Awards ceremony and party

edit

At around 6:00 pm PST, teams will return to Paco Park, and everyone will proceed to Shakey's. Teams will upload their pictures to a special page on the toolserver, and organizers will verify the self-scoring of the teams. Photos will then be mass-uploaded by the organizers to Wikimedia Commons. Teams are highly encouraged to have a computer with them, though computers will be provided for participants who do not have one.

The top three teams with the most photos taken will be awarded during the party.

Volunteers

edit

Wikipedian volunteers are most welcome to help us organize the event, such as helping out with registration, tally and uploading of photos, etc. Volunteers may also "compete" directly as well. Please send an e-mail to Wikimedia Philippines at info wikimedia.org.ph if you wish to volunteer, or leave a message on the talk page.

We can also use help in compiling the list of sites covered by the event.

This sign-up list is just for fun. Teams wishing to register must do so using the form. You can also check out our Facebook event!
