Wikimania in Atlanta

Hey, Maria. I'm letting you know about our bid to get next year's Wikimania held in Atlanta. I'm going to leave the general template on your page, which may or may not apply to you (I don't know if you've edited Georgia-related articles), but I figured you may want to know about the bid anyway. Plus, we need all the help we can get in the next year or so, so I'd sign the Southeast team page if you can help in any capacity, online or in person. It's all appreciated. :) Mike H. I did "That's hot" first! 23:36, 1 September 2007 (UTC)

Hi! I noticed your involvement on U.S. South-related articles, categories and WikiProjects, and I wanted to let you know about a bid we're formulating to get next year's Wikimania held in Atlanta! If you would like to help, be sure to sign your name to the "In Atlanta" section of the Southeast team portion of the bid if you're in town, or to the "Outside Atlanta" section if you still want to help but don't live in the city or the suburbs. If you would like to contribute more, please write on my talk page, the talk page of the bid, or join us at the #wikimania-atlanta IRC chat on freenode.org. Have a great day!

P.S. While this is a template for maximum efficiency, I would appreciate a note on my talk page so I know you got the message, and what you think. This is time-sensitive, so your urgent cooperation is appreciated. :)

On 5 September, 2007, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Hughes Brothers, which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

Rushdie

Does the Booker prize specify that the author is known by the country they are born in rather than country of residence or their nationality? Rushdie is a British citizen (and a knight at that), and his own page page specifies his nationality as British. Cheers, Miremare 17:53, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

I believe his nationality is what should be listed, as that seems the purpose of the column, rather than the location of birth. His article specifies "United Kingdom" as his nationality (which it certainly is, as the fact he has a knighthood confirms), and I don't think we should have conflicting nationalities on these pages. If anything, I would suggest listing Indian after British if you feel it is necessary. Cheers, Miremare 19:13, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
I don't understand what you mean, are you disputing his nationality? And it's not up to us to decide which nation is more relevant to his work, that's original research. Miremare 19:29, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
I'm pretty sure non-Brits are only entitled to an honorary knighthood, such as that awarded to Rudolph Giuliani. Anyway, you say that to exclude India as his country of origin would be incorrect, but you don't think excluding his British nationality is incorrect? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that the column in question supposed to contain the nationality of the winner? In which case he is British, as confirmed in his article, and it is misleading to describe him on this list as Indian. Miremare 19:56, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

Wikipedia is the only place that does filmographies from oldest to newest. It looks like garbage, but I could care less about it. Things like that are why Wikipedia will never be a reliable source for anything.Smartissexy 22:07, 20 September 2007 (UTC) Also, what you are referencing is bibliographies, and a filmography isn't a bibliography.Smartissexy 22:10, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

Oprah's Book Club

Hi, just a friendly note. I've noticed of late that you have done a great deal of work on the Oprah's Book Club page. While I do appreciate all of your hardwork, I must ask that you refrain from reverting the changes that other users make. Simply put, this is not your page; it is shared by the entire community. Recent information about the latest book club selection is important and is credible; responding to the users who post that information by saying "Wikipedia is not a blog" is both rude and unnecessary. While you are correct that it is not a blog, it is also not an encyclopedia as you have stated you wish it to be. Please keep that in mind while reverting other people's edits. Thank you! Flexpedition 3:21, 1 October 2007

While I hate to once again disagree with you...please read the guidelines yourself: "Individual scheduled or expected future events should only be included if the event is notable and almost certain to take place." Since Oprah.com - the most reliable source for Oprah's book club - has announced that a new selection will take place then it is absolutely true that the event is notable and will take place on Friday, October 5th. Therefore I am undoing your revert once again, though I predict you will probably challenge it. Please remember that Wikipedia is a collaborative project, meant to be used and edited by everyone who chooses to. While you may have the opinion that the information posted is unnecessary the fact is not everyone shares that opinion. Besides that, the announcement will take place Friday and this entire matter will be dropped.

Finally, after re-reading the first sentence, I have not changed my opinion. You should be aware that Wikipedia is NOT an encyclopedia by the standard definition of one which would not lend itself to being edited at anytime by anyone; it is instead a web-based, collaborative encyclopedic effort (hence the name, and the definition).

I do apologize for the signature mix-up, but we all make mistakes. Godspeed. (Flexpedition 01:39, 2 October 2007 (UTC)) 21:41, 1 October 2007 (UTC)

You've come up with a fair solution. Though I agree that the sentence itself could be improved, please remember that I am not the one who wrote it, yet it still seems unnecessary to call someone's words poor. Constructive criticism is sometimes a better choice.

Thank you for your time, and consideration. It is obvious that you are not a vandal; I regret any inference that could be made by the term "warned" though I was simply at a loss for space in the explanation. Be well. (Flexpedition 02:53, 2 October 2007 (UTC))22:53, 2 October 2007

Thank you for cleaning up the lead; the page is much easier to read, now. Great work! (Flexpedition 23:19, 5 October 2007 (UTC)) 19:24, 5 October 2007

Template:Madeleine L'Engle

Hi. I don't mind your redoing the Madeleine L'Engle template to make it more uniform and, er, subtle. However, the way it is now, the graphic, which I spent hours designing way-back-when, floats off to the right, halfway down the template, where it looks terrible. Is there a way to retain your improvements but use the image in a low-key way where it will actually look decent? I experimented a little, but my experience with this kind of syntax is minimal and nothing worked well. Can you help? Thanks! -- Karen | Talk | contribs 07:19, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

Achebe, Hughes, and Sunshine

Hey there. Thanks for the vote of support at the Chinua Achebe FAC. I was glancing at your userpage and noticed you started the page for the Hughes Brothers – well done. Dead Presidents is one of my favorite films, so I'm glad to see their page is in good hands. (I wasn't so into American Pimp, given the lack of screen time they gave to the women and the scant attention paid to the violence inherent in the system.)

I also notice you're in Florida – which part, if you don't mind my asking? I grew up in Gainesville, and the harsh Wisconsin winters make me homesick sometimes. Cheers! – Scartol · Talk 14:20, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

Hey, Maria. You've been quite helpful in the past, knowledgeable about Wikipedia and whatnot. Was wondering if you might review To Kill a Mockingbird for me. It passed GA yesterday, and I'd like to know where to focus to improve it for FA. It was up for peer review at WP:Novels, but it got a tepid response, and has changed quite a bit since then. Knut

Thanks, I intended to help. I wanted to say I supported it's candidateship when I first read it, but I don't see how supporting really means much both since an upgrade requires consensus, not majority vote and since while many articles are strong in one area they are weak in another. I hope my comments help Knut (polar bear) improve it into FA status.--Keerllston 15:43, 14 November 2007 (UTC)

Could you help me out?

Patricia Reilly Giff‎ and the related articles, are in real bad shape, I know you are a constant contributor to literature related articles, I was hoping you could help me improve them. Sincerely, --Keerllston 23:33, 5 December 2007 (UTC)

So you're not interesting in improving that article? Why? - has personal emnity due to my objection(s) to Knut gone so far? -or do you not like that kind of literature?
I like to use wiktionary for definitions

As to the definition of discount - dis meaning taking away from - count meaning counting - I think there is no simpler definition and no truer definition
Why wouldn't you like to work with me? I assure you I am usually not bitingly sarcastic - or rude/uncivil - I intentionally try not to be either. It seems she's a rather interesting person, and has won awards - isn't your interest peaked at all?

Could you help me?
"superlative degree of comparison" - comparing amount of evil/good or the greatness? - "more evil" and "more good" vs "good" and "evil" -or instead -"great man" vs. "insignificant"?
Is there an ambiguity inherent to the passage? or does it refer to both?

- Dickens is not Dickinson - I'm hoping you can help me on one.

Thanks in advance
--Kiyarrllston 03:26, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

Sorry. The passage is from the opening to A Tale of Two Cities...
The context of that sentence, from the beginning of the book to the paragraph after the sentence, goes:
Any help would be appreciated.
I would very much like to know your response to that passage, and whether your interpretation on it is similar or dissimilar from my own.
--Kiyarrllston 14:45, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
Wow... thanks a lot - took a while to understand it, but I finally did.
Nah, not discussed anywhere in Wikipedia (I think) just a personal concern of mine
Agreed, Dickens is very verbose :).
Once again, thanks.

Hello Maria..We talked a while ago about John Updike and Joyce Carol Oates...Anyway, I was wondering if you were aware of the horrendous fact that very few novels by classic author James Fenimore Cooper have a page of their own...One of them even gets redirected to his page! Whilst I fear I don't have enough time to read the books and create the pages atm, I was wondering if perhaps you did, in which case that would be great. Otherwise perhaps we could inform people from the WikiProject Novels about it? Knut

Hey María, I left a comment at Knut. I don't really see why fair use (even when it's clearly compliant with WP:NFCC) is so upsetting to some people. And of course, nobody would ever suggest that the encyclopedia never quote from an article from Vanity Fair which, legally speaking, is protected under the same fair use. For some reason there's a lot of non-lawyers who have incredibly dogmatic but somewhat inconsistent opinions about the whole "free content" thing. Oh well, one of those bizarre pieces of the WikiLandscape. If it comes down to it, I'd just say don't let the images discourage you. Javan Rhinoceros was recently promoted with no free images of the poor beasties alive. I could have put up a fair use image, and although it would improve the article a bit I don't think it's all that shabby not to have it... similar with the issue at hand -- either way, the article on Knut will still be beautifully illustrated.

How are you feeling about the process otherwise? A lot of first-comers (well, at least I did) find it really nerve-wracking and a bit discouraging at times. Some topics draw in a lot of commentators, but some really good articles don't get as much attention (lots of experts in science or literature; not as many in German polar bear media sensations ;) Good luck with it and let me know if I can be of help with this or whatever else. --JayHenry (talk) 07:24, 29 November 2007 (UTC)

Famous hippos, eh? I think we might be kindred WikiSpirits. One of the first articles I ever created was William Johnson Hippopotamus. Alas, I haven't been able to find enough information to take my friend Billy to good article status, let alone featured (and I live in constant, crippling, nightmares-all-night terror that the deletionists will go after him). --JayHenry (talk) 23:25, 29 November 2007 (UTC)
Good lord, I just noticed that poor little Knut has been drug into another unrelated squabble. This is one of the silliest FACs I've ever seen. I'm really impressed with your patience through the process. I'd have likely flipped out by now, gone to the zoo and killed Knut myself just to be done with it ;) --JayHenry (talk) 03:19, 5 December 2007 (UTC)

Thank you that you changed my comments in the Knut article in "good" English as it is not my mother language. The "phenomena Knut" has raised some controversies in the German Wikipedia community because some think Knut is not worth to mention. I'm surprised how relaxed it is seen here. It is ok with the reverse of the Bild Zeitung text. Let me only say that the Bild Zeitung is by far the worst newspaper in Germany with a very bad background and I would use it only as toilet paper in the wood. Unfortunately, its influence as an opinion maker for the uneducated is undisputed. Have you already heard about the plans to make a movie about Knut? See here: http://www.spiegel.de/international/zeitgeist/0,1518,525955,00.html Luzymae —Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.131.210.30 (talk) 15:09, 1 January 2008 (UTC)

You are fast - thank you Maria! Maybe you find it also interesting that the zoo's managing director lost his job lately despite making so much money. He did a very very good job, but I think they dismissed him because he wanted too much money in his new contract. The city of Berlin declared bankrupt and the allowances to the zoo were not so much. But there was always the discrepancy between making money and the protection of the animals. Happy 2008! New thread

Yes, FACs that get bogged down like this can still pass. What's happening at Knut is hardly normal but unfortunately it does happen from time to time. Some reviewers have pet issues or just get hung up on a particular point and will go nuts if the point is not addressed. There's really only two things you can do: 1) be patient and 2) not be one of those people ;) My advice at Knut would be to just not respond to Kirlston anymore as he's clearly not being very reasonable, let him have the last word, and let Raul and Sandy interpret things -- they're generally quite fair. As a worst case scenario they might restart the nomination, just to get the conversation back on track. But I think failure at this point is highly unlikely.

If you do an author next you'll find there's a community of literature-focused reviewers who are all quite good and almost all quite reasonable. So what's your next FA, huh? One of your top ten favorites, perhaps? --JayHenry (talk) 00:41, 6 December 2007 (UTC)

Btw, traditionally the nominator gets the honors of adding the featured article star to the article. The template to do so is {{Featured article}}. Congrats again. --JayHenry (talk) 00:08, 8 December 2007 (UTC)

Commiseration

Thanks. It's clear to me that Kirlston shouldn't be involved in that article. As you said, he twists Wikipedia policies to his own ends. I could have come back on "policy", but I didn't feel like fighting with someone who is so irrepressible despite knowing nothing about the subject matter. We'll see what kind of mess he manages to make of the article. The way he is going, it could be a big one. Bathrobe (talk) 03:15, 10 December 2007 (UTC)

Congratulations on getting your article on the front page of Wikipedia today! Bathrobe (talk) 08:57, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

The thing with feathers

I'd be honored to help out with Ms. Dickinson. I am indeed a bit swamped right now (hence the "is not" sign), but if you can give me a week or maybe two, I'll be more than happy to give it a thorough going-over. She's a most important lady, and one of American letters' more intriguing characters. (Which, given the odd character of US writers, is saying something, heh.) Thanks too for your kind comments about my FA scribbling. It was a bright spot on a rather wearying day. Cheers! – Scartol • Tok 19:34, 13 December 2007 (UTC)

I haven't forgotten! I'll do more reviewing soon, I promise. =) Cheers. – Scartol • Tok 05:08, 29 December 2007 (UTC)
María, I would like to see your top ten "OMG WTH" list of American writers that you mentioned on Scartol's talk. I think this could be a very useful resource for future generations of scholars on Wikipedia. --JayHenry (talk) 21:03, 15 December 2007 (UTC)
A valuable list which, through the power of the Wiki, will likely come to redefine our understanding of American Literature. Though not a literary scholar, I believe I am an expert on OMG WTH and to my mind, Hemingway and Twain, great writers indisputably, do not qualify for the WTH which represents a sort of shock and chaos. They are bold writers to be sure, but at no point in A Farewell to Arms did I say, "OMG WTH FredHenry!" I would add Hunter S. Thompson and Kurt Vonnegut instead. Possibly Thomas Pynchon moves onto my list instead of Capote. Pynchon elicits relatively less OMG, but a very great deal of WTH. It's a complicated area of scholarship and I'm glad someone with such keen insight as yourself is delving into it. --JayHenry (talk) 20:45, 16 December 2007 (UTC)
You're quite welcome, and I'm happy to help. I just wish my high school students were so grateful when I tell them what to improve in their writing! =) And BTW, please don't refer to yourself as a "nobody". Your dedication to knowledge and strong work ethic make you a somebody among somebodies. Cheers! – Scartol • Tok 15:37, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

Congratulations

I was watching Emily Dickinson after seeing it go up for GA. A worthy subject and a very good article. Well-deserved. --Moni3 (talk) 15:19, 25 December 2007 (UTC)

Help help!

Hello my animal loving friend. Happy Holidays and (almost) New Year! I am in need of a competent copy editor. Could you cast your competent eye upon my poor little Sumatran Rhinoceros? I know these lengthy biology-focused articles might not be your thing, but I'm basically looking for someone who can just smooth it out a bit, let me know what parts seem awkward, etc. At the bottom of the FAC page, Tony1 left some pointers. Any help would be greatly appreciated. (btw, congrats on Emily Dickinson!) --JayHenry (talk) 03:39, 28 December 2007 (UTC)

Re: where to comment. Maybe leave detailed remarks at Talk:Sumatran Rhinoceros and just leave a comment at the FAC that you did a copy edit? Thanks so much for your help. I'm on Holiday this week so I might not be very responsive but will be back in full force early next week to address any questions you might have going through the text. Thanks again! --JayHenry (talk) 22:27, 28 December 2007 (UTC)
Thanks again for checking in on the beastie. I've done another round of edits and left comments at the FAC in response. On a side note, I usually find vandalism completely tedious, but I must admit that this one on Knut made me chuckle. --JayHenry (talk) 05:13, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

League of Copyeditors roll call

Greetings from the League of Copyeditors. Your name is listed on our members page, but we are unsure how many of the people listed there are still active contributors to the League's activities. If you are still interested in participating in the work of the League, please follow the instructions at the members page to add your name to the active members list. Once you have done that, you might want to familiarise yourself with the new requests system, which has replaced the old /proofreading subpage. As the old system is now deprecated, the main efforts of the League should be to clear the substantial backlog which still exists there.
The League's services are in as high demand as ever, as evinced by the increasing backlog on our requests pages, both old and new. While FA and GA reviewers regularly praise the League's contributions to reviewed articles, we remain perennially understaffed. Fulfilling requests to polish the prose of Wikipedia's highest-profile articles is a way that editors can make a very noticeable difference to the appearance of the encyclopedia. On behalf of the League, if you do consider yourself to have left, I hope you will consider rejoining; if you consider yourself inactive, I hope you will consider returning to respond to just one request per week, or as many as you can manage. Merry Christmas and happy editing, The League of Copyeditors.
