December music

November was rich in sadness and happiness for me, expressed in music. There are two composers on the Main page today, Siegfried Thiele and Aaron Copland. I find the response of my friend Jerome Kohl to a question on Copland's article talk promising. What do you think? -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:48, 2 December 2024 (UTC)
On the Main page today Jean Sibelius on his birthday. Listening to Beethoven's Fifth from the opening of Notre-Dame de Paris. We sang in choirs today. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:16, 8 December 2024 (UTC)

editCongrats on getting back on the committee - I really mean that. The overall results will come as a relief for many but WP has its first non-admin arb and at least one or two with very little admin experience. There will be a lot of talk about this result. It proves again that with so few contenders it's relatively easy to get a seat - all but 2 got a pass mark. IMO it's time to either redesign the electoral system or chuck the whole Arbcom thing out and replace it with something else. There is a better gender balance this time, but it remains to be seen which of them will be around when they are needed. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 00:04, 9 December 2024 (UTC)
- I'm mildly bummed I did so bad but not terribly surprised. The nature of the private case against me is undeniably is the reason. On the other hand, you've got a really great group coming in with you, I'm feeling way better about the immediate future of this committee, which, despite what some people apparently think, was the only reason I ran to begin with. Thank you all for the kind words. @Kudpung - I'm a bit confused as to why you think Daniel is the first non-admin arb? He can literally pick up the tools at any time - i.e. in the same position I was when I ran in 2017. I picked them up after I was elected. @Just Step Sideways It was a strong field this year, and I think that's why you missed out. You've certainly got enough support there. - It's really a minor point. I didn't do a lot of research, I didn't do a voter guide, I didn't do a voting analysis this time either, and I didn't vote. So I guessed I missed that detail. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk)

- @Kudpung Heh, well, it's a bugbear of mine that the community won't elect non-admin arbs. Xeno in 2021 and I in 2017 matched that criteria, but it's never moved the needle for actual non-admins. As to your other points, I think some major reform is needed soon, electorial process or arbcom itself, I think I'm so ingrained that I won't be good at leading the change, but I do hope to help it through. As for the gender balance, I'm really happy to see that needle move. WormTT(talk) 10:59, 9 December 2024 (UTC)
- I think the main problem is that while many first time postulants run for office on a platform of wanting change, they never get round to it and were ill prepared for the routine workload that awaits them. It's not like adminship where the work is transparent and every genuine candidate has, or should already have a good idea what the work entails before they take the plunge. Besides which like most advanced rights holders, admins are under no compulsion to do anything at all if they don't want to - and some don't. Suggestions have been floated tt let the clerks handle the emails, but where that makes up the bulk of the work it would require a very high degree of trust to be established. Over the years there has been a vast amount of discussion about adminship, but due to the small number of members of the Committee and requiring re-election after 2 years there is probably not sufficient motivation for change.
