WikiProject Professional wrestling newsletter message

It has recently been brought to the attention of WP:PW that the newsletter is being to delivered to several users who have not been actively editing for several months. As a result, their talk pages have become increasingly large, unmanageable and slow to load due to a lack of archiving.
In response, this message is being sent to all editors listed in Category:WikiProject Professional wrestling participants to say that anyone who does not list their name at Wikipedia:WikiProject Professional wrestling/Newsletter/Active before May 16 will be automatically listed at Wikipedia:WikiProject Professional wrestling/Newsletter/Nospam, and will no longer receive the newsletter or any notification of it. If you are added to Wikipedia:WikiProject Professional wrestling/Newsletter/Nospam, please feel free to remove your name if you desire.
If you wish to continue receiving the newsletter as normal, please add your name to Wikipedia:WikiProject Professional wrestling/Newsletter/Active. If you simply wish to receive notification of a new issue, but not have the full newsletter delivered to your talk page, please add your name to the notification only list.
If you have any queries please contact me at my talk page or leave a message at WT:PW. Thank you for your co-operation. ♥NiciVampireHeart00:36, 2 May 2010 (UTC)

Questions

August 22, 2010's Questions

Game Series Derived from Real Life Show

Good evening and let me ask a simple, yet complexed (to me at least), question and I will give you as much information as I can. I am working on a video game show that, soon to be, on YouTube OR have a blog about it with some pictures. The premise of the show is derived from The Real Housewives of... title and format. My question is this, if this is a successful endeavor, am I allowed to post the show title and a brief description, along with season listing with some information, or I am not allowed to? Sundogs Wikia UserPage | Roller Derby Wiki 01:01, 23 August 2010 (UTC)

Hi. Firstly, although I'm not an Admin, I can answer your question. It didn't actually need the assistance of an admin. You could try using the templete {{helpme}} in the future for questions that don't need an admin's help. Now your question. If your video game becomes notable, then it may be created, but not by you, as that would be a breach of Wikipedia's COI policy[clarification needed]. Also, the article may be created only after it has become notable, or else it would probabeley become quickly deleted. I hope this helps. If you need more help, simply replace the template {{helpme-helped}} with {{helpme}}. --Imagine Wizard (talk contribs count) Iway amway Imagineway Izardway. 01:17, 23 August 2010 (UTC)
I marked the Wikipedia's COI page clarification. Would someone clarify something for me and that is if I am in ANY relations with a company, product, or anything therein of the company, I am not allowed to create an article about it because it is breach of neutral point of view? Question below to help me understand. Sundogs Wikia UserPage | Roller Derby Wiki 01:49, 23 August 2010 (UTC)
If you are involved with the company/group/etc. in a non-trivial way then you have a COI. You are not prohibited from writing about the group, just strongly discouraged, because it is hard to keep neutral about it, and such. fetch·comms 01:54, 23 August 2010 (UTC)

Dumb questions

Question 1

Here is another, yet need to ask, question, and that is I have read at an unreliable source that there are notable roller derby companies that have some success in the southeast of United States. I have called these two companies and they have provided me with all Legit paperwork with details. My question is with little to no national exposure, am I allowed to create an article about these two roller derby companies?

Probably not, as notability means that the company must have received lots of coverage from independent sources, like the news, magazines, books, etc. If all the information is provided by them, and they have not been covered elsewhere, they are 99.9% not notable. fetch·comms 01:54, 23 August 2010 (UTC)
Question 2

And secondly, and this is a question about Wikipedia's COI's policy, I have little to no relations with this upstart wrestling promotion, which has some notoriety of former talents lending their names, resources, and time into, in this new wrestling promotion in Florida, my question is, am I allowed to create an article about this company? Sundogs Wikia UserPage | Roller Derby Wiki 01:49, 23 August 2010 (UTC)

Sure, as long as it is notable and you include reliable sources to back up all the information. fetch·comms 01:54, 23 August 2010 (UTC)

August 23, 2010 Questions

Fan-site credibility

{{Helpme}} Yet another question is about the credibility of a fan-site and wikipedia? Lets' say, for example, a children's' internet multi player game, such as ToonTown Online is the question being geared towards, a fan-site called ToonTown Central, or ToonTown Hall either one works just fine, is this site a reliable source for an article? Sundogs Wikia UserPage | Roller Derby Wiki 02:06, 23 August 2010 (UTC)

Generally, fan sites are not reliable. fetch·comms 02:19, 23 August 2010 (UTC)
(edit conflict)
In that example, then for an article about "ToonTown Online" their own site is a primary source, so it can be used as a reference, with caution - ie that a) it does not help show notability (because it is not independent of the subject), and b) it can only be used for simple, neutral facts. E.g. it could be a ref for "The company is based in New York" but not for "Their turnover is $9M".
The other sites - fan sites - are unlikely to be 'reliable sources' - but, that is dependent on a degree of common sense; if YOU consider them to have a 'reputation for fact-checking and accuracy', then sure, they could be reliable sources. Most "user-generated" content is not a reliable source, so if it is forums for the public, it does not make an appropriate reference. But if e.g. they have "facts about ToonTown" and you think most people would agree they are 'reliable' then sure, it is fine.
If in doubt, ask on WP:RSN, the reliable sources noticeboard.

Template Question

{{helpme}} I have seen the hidden code the would allow you to magically type in a related template to the main template. Example is here on Wikipedia with the World Wrestling Entertainments' Pay-per-view template where it had previously had this code and I don't know where to find it. Any suggestions? Sundogs Wikia UserPage | Roller Derby Wiki 14:50, 27 August 2010 (UTC)

  • Are you talking about Transposition Transclude? Like the {{helpme}} box you just added to your page? Just put the template/article in curlie braces like you would any other link. -- Crazysane (T/C\D) 15:06, 27 August 2010 (UTC)
And where do I find the appropriate Transclude code at though? Sundogs Wikia UserPage | Roller Derby Wiki 15:21, 27 August 2010 (UTC)
I'm basically putting it on Wikia and it will be, more or less, show related like the example above. Then again, it could be expanded to other means. I just want to do to create a tranclude template so that I can easily place appropriate templates to appropriate articles, like WWE PPV WrestleMania winners and venues will be only on WWE WrestleMania articles where as on the main page shows only the overall template without any other templates being placed onto the page.
Have you tried including the template in your Wikia page by using {{Wikipedia:Template:WWEPPV}} as per the guidance at http://help.wikia.com/wiki/Help:Interwiki_link/technical?
If your question is about the template changing its function based on the name of the page it is being used on, then you may need to create #if statements and/or #switch statements within the template. You'd probably do best to find someone who has done something similarly clever in Wikia. (talk) 16:10, 27 August 2010 (UTC)

I have used the WWE PPV #switch or the #if code and id DOES work on the Wikia pages. I would like to use the appropriate one. Something that the WWE PPV template used would be acceptable but right people should be enlighten me with the appropriate answer. Sundogs Wikia UserPage | Roller Derby Wiki 16:34, 27 August 2010 (UTC)

This has been running for over two hours - no one here really knows the answer thus far. Perhaps this is a question best suited for the Wikia project rather then here on Wikipedia? I'm going to disable the template, if you insist on waiting for someone on Wikipedia helping you further, feel free to turn the template back on. -- Crazysane (T/C\D) 18:51, 27 August 2010 (UTC)

Wikipedia Ambassador Program in Houston

Hi! I'm leaving you this message because you're listed as a Wikipedian from Houston. The Wikipedia Ambassador Program is currently looking for Campus Ambassadors from the Houston area, to help with Wikipedia assignments at Texas Southern University. Classes at TSU will be participating in the Public Policy Initiative for the Spring 2011 semester, and the role of Campus Ambassadors will be to provide face-to-face training and support for students on Wikipedia-related skills (how to edit articles, how to add references, etc.). This includes doing in-class presentations, running workshops and labs, possibly holding office hours, and in general providing in-person mentorship for students.

Prior Wikipedia skills are not required for the role, as training will be provided for all Campus Ambassadors (although, of course, being an experienced editor is a plus).

If you are interested in being a Wikipedia Campus Ambassador, or know someone in Houston who might be, please email me or leave a message on my talk page. Thanks!--Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 20:00, 1 December 2010 (UTC)

The Sims 3 artucke qustion

This part has been dealt with

Over at The Sims 3 article, there is a section is made for worlds and which it inlcudes the world that was shipped in the base game and the free downloadable world upon registering the game to The Sims 3 official site. My concern is that there are two additional world via The Sims 3 Store purchase with on-site currency that has been given to the account holder upon the registering of The Sims 3 base game and the first expansion pack, The Sims 3: World Adventures, of 1,000 free "Sim Points" which are worth ten dollar in US Currency free from the game developer. The problem that I have is this, Barnacle Bay and Hidden Springs are, more or less, available for the base game like the free world called Riverview. And so, is there any objections to me updating the article that needs to includes the Barnacle Bay and Hidden Springs on the main The Sims 3 article. Also to note, inreguards of The Sims series games, is it wise to give brief quote and unquote world information or some noteworthy details shown at The Sims Wiki has? Just a thought. Sundogs Wikia UserPage | Roller Derby Wiki 00:58, 24 October 2011 (UTC)

If you think it should be added, and can provide a reference to a reliable source, then add it. If you are not too sure, then suggest it on the discussion page, Talk:The Sims 3.
You shouldn't link to "The Sims Wiki", no, because it is not a reliable source.  Chzz  ►  05:54, 24 October 2011 (UTC)

Online radio programs on WP Question

Dealt With I have come across some online shows that are online exclusives and has not been on Wikipedia but I wish to make them available on WP such as online radio shows serial drama series and shows that are popular like NHL Home Ice that is NHL.COM exclusive or satellite radio (Sirius XM Radio) shows as well. Would this be acceptable for WP? Sundogs Wikia UserPage 00:18, 2 June 2012 (UTC)

Yes, but only if you can establish WP:Notability by showing "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." Myspace, Facebook, blogs, fansites, press releases don't count as reliable. The test is, have people independent of the subject thought it significant enough to write substantial comment about? Wikipedia's standard of Wikia collaborative sites

I would be understanding this more if the rules are more clear and that is that I have a television related wikia, Soap Opera Wiki, and I would like to post the link on the appropriate shows like All My Children, The Bold and the Beautiful, Days of our Lives, and so forth in American daytime dramas and the primetime soaps like Hollywood Heights, General Hospital: Night Shift, and dozen more including international broadcast of soaps like Coronation Street, Fair City, Hollyoaks, and more throughout the soap genre. Is this allowed? Sundogs Wikia UserPage 00:18, 9 November 2012 (UTC)

Sorry, but no, it's not allowed—Wikipedia does not consider any wiki (even Wikipedia itself!) to be a reliable source. DoriTalkContribs 03:12, 9 November 2012 (UTC)
