March 2021

edit

Hello, I'm SunDawn. I noticed that you recently removed content from History of geography without adequately explaining why. In the future, it would be helpful to others if you described your changes to Wikipedia with an accurate edit summary. If this was a mistake, don't worry; the removed content has been restored. If you would like to experiment, please use your sandbox. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thanks. Black people in ancient Roman history

edit

I won't revert your edit to Black people in ancient Roman history because the word 'Moorish' was never needed. But your reason for deleting was not correct: the text clearly describes him as "North African" and that he was born in Leptis Magna, which was in Libya. Also, words change meaning over time: a word that may have started as meaning specifically Muslim, came to be used in English as meaning anyone North African, irrespective of religion. As I wrote elsewhere, Wikipedia describes what is, not what should be. --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 18:00, 22 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

You might be interested to read the article Othello, which talks incidentally about how the word 'Moor' has been used at various times in English, often in quite a racist way.
I guess you should take a look at the Wikipedia policy, right great wrongs, before you get bogged down in pointless edit wars.--John Maynard Friedman (talk) 18:55, 22 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
