Referencing and Television Centre, Newcastle upon Tyne
editHello and welcome. Wikipedia has many rules and conventions, but one of the most important ones is "cite your sources". It is unacceptable to add information, or to create a page, without references. As most of the information at Television Centre, Newcastle upon Tyne, which you created, has been taken from Tyne Tees Television, perhaps you would like to also copy the references over. Best, The JPStalk to me 14:18, 22 July 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for adding some references. There is a lot to learn on Wikipedia. 'External links' isn't good enough for references because the reader needs to be told the source of each piece of information.
You should also be aware of our 'Reliable Sources' policy. Not every website is considered a reliable source. Facts that are supported by sources that fail our WP:RS criteria are likely to be challenged or removed. As a fan, and geek, I think that TV Ark and similar fansites are great, but I'm not sure that they pass the criteria outlined at WP:RS. If is better to source your information from reputable newspapers, books and academic journal papers. The JPStalk to me 22:43, 23 July 2011 (UTC)
Usually, stuff from TVARK is stuff that i can verify, sych as a date or fact mentioned in a video, or in the case of this page, a scanned image of the IBA yearbook which contained the detail.Rafmarham (talk) 20:52, 24 July 2011 (UTC)
- That's fine -- put the primary source in a ref tag, such as: <ref>IBA 1997 Yearbook</ref> The original source is likely to be considered more reliable than TV Ark.
Facts must be verifiable; you can't say 'I know it's true' -- you must direct readers to where they can verify the information for themselves.
As I say, Wikipedia can be complicated. Stick with it... The JPStalk to me 10:38, 25 July 2011 (UTC)- The other thing I'd suggest is, as a new user, is to use the talk pages of articles before making any major changes to the structure of articles.
Sorry to nag you. I like your enthusiasm for this topic and you have the potential to be a good editor. I just want to guide you through some of Wikipedia's many policies and pitfalls. The JPStalk to me 21:53, 25 July 2011 (UTC)
- The other thing I'd suggest is, as a new user, is to use the talk pages of articles before making any major changes to the structure of articles.
Additions to Tyne Tees Television
editWelcome to Wikipedia. We invite everyone to contribute constructively to our encyclopedia. However, your recent edit to Wikipedia, specifically the one you made to Tyne Tees Television, has been reverted, because the information you have added could not be verified. If you are certain this information is correct, please add a reliable reference to verify the information.Thank you.
The JPStalk to me 09:48, 22 August 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for your reply. Wikipedia's position is clear: do not add anything without references. If you can't reference it, don't add it regardless of how strongly you feel about it. WP:V and WP:RS are two important aspects of Wikipedia and we all must abide by them. I hope I have explained clearly enough: unsourced material is useless, and will be removed. Good luck. The JPStalk to me 17:44, 22 August 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for adding sources. The other thing we must remember is that not all sources are considered 'reliable' -- see WP:RS. Although Andrew Bowden's site is very good, and probably accurate, I'm not sure that it meets the standards at WP:RS. Can you look at the criteria at WP:RS and suggest how that site can be considered a 'reliable source'? The JPStalk to me 17:47, 22 August 2011 (UTC)

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of BBC Four idents, and it appears to include material copied directly from http://www.weather.com/.
It is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article. The article will be reviewed to determine if there are any copyright issues.
If substantial content is duplicated and it is not public domain or available under a compatible license, it will be deleted. Daily Mail
editHi. Please do not use the Daily Mail as you did at University of Southampton Students' Union. See WP:DAILYMAIL. Kind regards, Robby.is.on (talk) 19:39, 25 October 2020 (UTC)
- It was more to record their 'reporting' of the incident along with the other newspapers that recorded it rather than being used as a reference of information in the article but thanks for bringing it to my attention. Rafmarham (talk) 22:51, 25 October 2020 (UTC)
- I'm afraid I don't understand that explanation. The Daily Mail reference followed a statement from the student union so I don't see how the reference wasn't being "used as a reference of information in the article". Also, there's no mention of the Daily Mail's "reporting" in the text. Robby.is.on (talk) 23:24, 25 October 2020 (UTC)
- One part of the sentence included a statement that the apology had been widely reported, hence why articles that reported on the story in a journalistic capacity were linked afterwards as references. I appreciate it was not necessary to link so many but this was more referring to the reported widely part as opposed to the quote and the actions themselves. As mentioned above I was not aware about the decision regarding the Mail in these uses and it is not something I would normally use as I have a low opinion of the Mail's reporting. I hope that has clarified it. Rafmarham (talk) 23:30, 25 October 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks for the clarification. But then I have to ask: Is the "widely reported" claim directly supported by the sources in the sense that they themselves state that the apology was "widely reported"? Or did you reach that conclusion by synthesis of the long list of references? If it's the latter, then that's probably original research. Robby.is.on (talk) 23:43, 25 October 2020 (UTC)
