Hartford Union Station

edit

Hi again.

The sign in the infobox for Hartford Union Station is the incorrect style. The red stripe is supposed to be thinner and the text should be centered according to Google Maps photos.

Here is a link confirming this: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Hartford+Union+Station/@41.7687601,-72.6822922,3a,75y,90t/data=!3m8!1e2!3m6!1sAF1QipNQsJKy1uRM1l-ExFSdH69BHYqzguAqSKRI79vd!2e10!3e12!6shttps:%2F%2Flh5.googleusercontent.com%2Fp%2FAF1QipNQsJKy1uRM1l-ExFSdH69BHYqzguAqSKRI79vd%3Dw203-h152-k-no!7i4608!8i3456!4m16!1m8!3m7!1s0x89e65366b8ee27f1:0x7937f6d67d7f7dbb!2sHartford+Union+Station!8m2!3d41.7688191!4d-72.6815714!10e5!16s%2Fg%2F1tff_jhx!3m6!1s0x89e65366b8ee27f1:0x7937f6d67d7f7dbb!8m2!3d41.7688191!4d-72.6815714!10e5!16s%2Fg%2F1tff_jhx?entry=ttu

Can you please make a new style reflecting the style of the signage at Hartford Union Station? Thanks again. Pedroperezhumberto (talk) 11:37, 1 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Pedroperezhumberto: The infobox styles are meant to roughly replicate the actual signs; they don't have to be pixel-perfect. While it's a good idea to get the main details right (color of the text, stripe location, etc), I don't think slight differences in stripe width are worth replicating. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 21:39, 1 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Ah alright.
It’s because it really did annoy me because they weren’t “accurate” to its real life counterpart. If you want it to stay as it is, then I’m fine with it. Pedroperezhumberto (talk) 06:33, 2 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Never mind, just found out how to do it and just did it. It's up on the page right now. Pedroperezhumberto (talk) 12:51, 3 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi can you please open a discussion on all four of the page you redirected before actually deleting them? It's not right to just redirect them on a whim without appropriate concensus. @DragonofBatley: As I said on your talk page, you need to read and digest the notability policy. All of the station articles you are creating fail the notability requirements, which means you should not create them. As an experienced editor, you should know better.
Boldly redirecting is an accepted alternative to deletion. I will now file AfDs per process. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 19:43, 5 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
I do know how to make articles so please don't be so disrespectful. I also have added further sources with books which are key to many articles. But see what's discussed and agreed. DragonofBatley (talk) 20:02, 5 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
@DragonofBatley: Adding numerous sources with trivial mentions of the subject does not establish notability - see WP:REFBOMB. If there is not significant coverage of a subject, it's better to add information to a broader article (in these cases, the railway line) rather than trying to prop up a tiny article. DOT State of the Art Car Postcard

edit

Hi! I was looking at your upload of the DOT SOAC postcard at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:State_Of_the_Art_Car_postcard.jpg -- this is a really cool postcard and I appreciate your committment to uploading interesting stuff about transit. I was wondering if you had a higher quality scan available, ie in a higher DPI and as a PNG or lossless TIFF image or similar; or if you knew where to find one. Thanks! Transitdragon (talk) 14:58, 23 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Transitdragon: Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! That scan was from eBay, which unfortunately scales images to 1600 pixels wide. I just found a slightly better scan (1700px with better colors) that is now up on that same file page, but I haven't been able to find anything larger or in a lossless format. Your best bet for that might be to buy one of the postcards and scan it yourself; from a quick look I see a number of cheap listings including ones at $4 and $5. Walnut Hill Station

edit

Do you know anything about the Walnut Hill Station in Dedham, along the NY, NH, & H railroad? This map shows it, about a third of the way over from the left. Look under the large B in "Fairbanks Park." My best guess, if it actually existed, would be that was about here. The map shows a few proposed streetcars, but doesn't say anything about about this being proposed. I've never heard of it before, have you? Thanks! -- Slugger O'Toole (talk) 05:37, 4 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Slugger O'Toole: It did in fact exist, and your location guess is accurate. It's not a terribly well-documented station. The earliest mention I find is 1874, and there was a station building by 1876. It may have been called "Mill Village" before that, but it doesn't show on any earlier maps. It was renamed East Dedham sometime between 1900 and 1907; it appears the post office was renamed in 1901. It was a stop up until Dedham Branch service ended in 1967. Boston's Commuter Rail: Second Section has an undated photo on page 31. It's consistent with what's shown on Sanborn maps - an island platform with a small wooden station between the tracks, and steps up to the Walnut Street bridge.
As you may have surmised, that "proposed belt line electric railroad" was never built. The only streetcar line to enter that part of Dedham was an Old Colony Street Railway line on Walnut, Oakdale, and Cobbler, built after 1900. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 09:10, 4 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Probably not enough for an article then. I added a note to History of rail in Dedham, Massachusetts with a citation to one of the articles you clipped... which raises a new question about the Oakdale station. Probably at River Street, or thereabouts, I am guessing from the description. --- Slugger O'Toole (talk) 05:24, 5 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

This map by @Whoop whoop pull up: shows Ashcroft on a different line. Is one of you mistaken, or am I missing something? -- Slugger O'Toole (talk) 08:00, 5 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
I think you may be misreading the article. That map you linked is correct - Oakdale/Ashcroft was located at Dale Street on the NY&NE (now the Franklin Line). It's also shown on the 1876 map. To the best of my knowledge, there was never a station on the Dedham Branch at River Street. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 08:07, 5 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
The location I put Ashcroft in on that map's based on one of the maps at the back of my copy of Boston's Commuter Rail: The First 150 Years, which puts Ashcroft on (what's now) the Franklin Line between Readville and Endicott. MBTA Ridership

edit

Hello!

I saw you deleted the "Ridership" section on the MBTA article. It is wildly out of date but I think the bones are good, no? The data needs updating but the format looks fine to me. Maybe you are working on an updated ridership section? Someone needs to do it, and I am happy to help but I wanted to check-in first. Cheers!

SSR07 (talk) 01:22, 10 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

@SSR07: I deleted the section because it was wildly out of date, and I don't see a need to have multiple years of by-mode ridership. (That is better kept as tabular data in the Data: namespace on Commons.) Additionally, two-thirds of the section was solely about the MBTA subway, rather than the MBTA as a whole. The historical subway ridership data might be worth adding on the MBTA subway article, but the list of busiest stations comes across as trivia to me.
The MBTA article needs a wholesale overall - much of it is out of date, and it has excessive detail on some subjects and not enough on others. I'm not opposed to discussing ridership by mode in the article, and you're welcome to create a new section. I would recommend having it be a level-3 subsection under the "Services" section rather than a level-2 section. I would recommend just having a single chart of current daily ridership by mode, perhaps with a comparison to pre-covid numbers. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 01:45, 10 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Experimenting with bundling two routemaps using {{switcher}} to deal with the line/service issue: User:Mackensen/Atlantic City Line. Mackensen (talk) 01:56, 30 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Mackensen: I like it. Seems like a good way to help with the line/service distinction in cases where there's not necessarily enough material for two separate articles. Might get a bit complicated when there are other maps already in the infobox, but often those can be moved into the prose. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 03:42, 30 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Sources for Western Pacific's San Francisco operations

edit

Good morning. As it stands now, Wikipedia is pretty complete as far as documenting the mainline railroads that operated in San Francisco. The exceptions are the myriad street railways (which may never really be done, but what's being done with the New York streetcar lines is quite impressive, so maybe) and those aren't mainline railways anyway, and the WP branch. It's been devilishly hard for me to find any reliable sources on the internet for that railroad outside of some maps. Are you aware of anything I should check out? -MJ (talk) 17:46, 31 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Mjdestroyerofworlds: Unfortunately, I don't know of any good coverage of the WP and Santa Fe freight lines in San Francisco. When Steam Ran on the Streets of San Francisco only covers passenger operations so it doesn't go into any detail on the lines. You might have to assemble it primarily from newspaper clippings - there seems to have been a decent amount of coverage of the construction of the Potrero Hill tunnel. Might also be worth reaching out to Market Street Railway to see if they have any sources to recommend. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 19:16, 31 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Need help altering a map file

edit

Hi! I wanted to ask for your help with altering a map file if that was alright. I noticed you had previously altered this map file previously portraying the original South Line for the San Diego Trolley. However, I've noticed that it's still missing the station at "San Diego Square", which opened as part of the initial line and was located between the "Gaslamp" and "City College" stations on this particular map. Unfortunately, I don't know how to edit vector map files like these, so I was wondering if you could be able to help make this hopefully simple and straightforward correction. Thank you! UMass Donahue Institute

edit

Hi Pi.1415926535,

Thanks for your attention to the erstwhile UMass Donahue Institute, but I’m not sure a redirect without further effort is a good solution. For one thing, there is no mention of the institute in at University of Massachusetts Amherst, and yet, the institute is clearly notable, as it is frequently cited in many news articles[2] related to many kinds of public policy in New England. Your point that the references are insufficient is definitely true, however — all the references were from the org’s own site, what was I thinking?? So I will not unredirect until more external references have been added. Thanks for all your work on Wikipedia babbage (talk) 14:29, 13 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Babbage: Thanks for reaching out. I happened across the article while doing new page patrol. As a reminder, notability requires significant coverage about the subject itself. While there's lots of articles that mention studies by the institute, only one of them discusses the institute itself at all, and not in enough detail to base an article on. (It's also a press release by the state government, which may not quite meet the "independent" criterion of WP:GNG.) Unless you're able to find some independent sources that have substantial coverage about the institute itself, I would recommend just having a paragraph at University of Massachusetts Amherst rather than creating a separate article. Re: Needham Layover

edit

I ride the Needham Line frequently on weekends and I have not seen a single train in the layover in quite a long time. In fact it looks like the ground power connections may have even been removed or deactivated. And three different conductors have also confirmed that the layover is no longer being used except in emergencies, supposedly as a cost-cutting measure. All early AM departures are stored overnight in Boston and deadheaded out to Needham Heights. 2601:18C:8B82:9E0:5DE5:D2F0:5221:21ED (talk) 02:21, 22 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Silver Hill

edit

I am shocked, shocked, to discover that they are going to reopen Silver Hill. Usually when the MBTA "indefinitely" closes something, it can be widely assumed that the closure is permanent unless some sort of significant reconstruction is planned (i.e. South Attleboro). I'm surprised they can even get away with reopening it without making it ADA accessible. They also seem to be trying to keep this under wraps... there's no mention of it in any of the schedule change announcements. I only stumbled upon it while browsing Google Maps tonight as the GTFS feed has already been updated. 2601:18C:8B82:9E0:81C2:A01A:C456:9E71 (talk) 03:46, 10 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

It is a bit strange; I assume it was a political ask rather than an MBTA decision. It is shown in the PDF schedule and interactive schedule. Per the Guide to Access (see page 15), requirements for accessibility renovations are triggered by the cost of other work being performed at a station. (That's under Massachusetts law, which is more strict than the federal ADA.) If minimal work was done for the reopening, it would have have triggered the legal requirement for accessibility.
