A short Esperanzial update

edit

As you may have gathered, discussions have been raging for about a week on the Esperanza talk page as to the future direction of Esperanza. Some of these are still ongoing and warrant more input (such as the idea to scrap the members list altogether). However, some decisions have been made and the charter has hence been amended. See what happened. Basically, the whole leadership has had a reshuffle, so please review the new, improved charter.

As a result, we are electing 4 people this month. They will replace JoanneB and Pschemp and form a new tranche A, serving until December. Elections will begin on 2006-07-02 and last until 2006-07-09. If you wish to run for a Council position, add your name to the list before 2006-07-02. For more details, see Wikipedia:Esperanza/June 2006 elections.

Thanks and kind, Esperanzial regards, —Celestianpower háblame 16:00, 23 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned fair use image (Image:Leoville.gif)

edit
  This file may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Leoville.gif. I notice the 'image' page currently specifies that the image is unlicensed for use on Wikipedia and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful.

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Fritz S. (Talk) 11:47, 1 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

August Esperanza Newsletter

edit
Program Feature: To-Do List
The Esperanza To-Do List is a place where you may list any request, big or small, for assistance. If you need help with archiving your usertalk, for example, all you need to do is list it here and somebody will help you out. Likewise, if you need help with some area of editing on Wikipedia, list it here! Again, any matter, trivial or not, can be placed on this page. However, all matters listed on this page must not be of an argumentative nature. You do not need to be a member of Esperanza (or this program) to place or fulfill requests on this page. If you don't have any requests, consider coming by and fulfilling a few! This program has not been very active, but has lots of potential!
What's New?
In order to help proposed programs become specific enough to make into full-fledged programs, the In development section of the proposals page has been created. Proposals that are promising, but need to be organized in more detail are listed here. Please take a look at what is there, and help the proposals turn into programs.
To improve both the layout and text of the front page, in an attempt to clarify the image of Esperanza, the front page is going to have some redesigning take place. Please take your creative minds to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Front page redesign to brainstorm good ideas.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. In order to make sure all users who join Esperanza are welcomed, a list of volunteers who are willing to welcome new Esperanzians is at Wikipedia:Esperanza/Members#Esperanza_welcomers. Please add yourself if you are interested; we want to make sure all new Esperanza members are welcomed!
  2. The In development section of the proposals page has been created.
  3. Proposals page: Some proposals have been moved to the aforementioned "In development" section, some have been left as a proposal, and others have been archived. For those proposals that were a good idea but didn't necessarily constitute a program, General Esperanzial Actions has been created.
  4. Two small pieces of charter reform will be decided on in a straw poll at Wikipedia talk:Esperanza/Governance. One involves filling the position of any councillors who may leave, the other involves reforming the charter.
  5. Until cooperation with the Kindness Campaign is better defined, it remains as a proposed program.
  6. There is a page for discussing the front page redesign.

Edit Problem

edit

There is a discussion with 2 members of wikipedia which has resulted in 2 personal attacks on my user talk page after I reverted POV text and may I add not well written text from the Nine Network article. Would you look into it and I realise I may of broken the 3R Rule however I did try various routes to solve this problem and they came up empty such as Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism. - Mike Beckham 23:20, 8 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, I'm quite busy at the moment, so I can't really investigate, but I've warned the user against making personal attacks. If he continues to revert the article list the page at WP:RFPP to request protection of the page and then discuss changes on the article talk page. If he makes another personal attack, leave {{subst:npa4}} on his user page, and if he makes another personal attack after that report him to WP:AIV for blocking. Hope this helps. —Mets501 (talk) 23:26, 8 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

edit

I'm sorry it took me so long to send a message to you, I had an internet outage. But I have removed removed your request from WP:AIV. Albatross is actually an established user who has apparently helped out with that article before. So it was indeed a misunderstanding on your part and an over-reaction on his part. Anycase this is not vandalism. I think this a non-issue really, but if you want to pursue this matter you can report it to either WP:PAIN for personal attacks or for just general administrator attention where it can be discussed to WP:AN/I.--Konstable 23:39, 8 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

It could be POV pushing. I haven't looked carefully through it. But the point is that WP:AIV is meant to be a place for quick obvious vandalism blocks not requiring much debate or investigation. This looks like something which could very well be debated, especially since he hasn't reached all the required warnings for a block on a personal attack, and POV-pushing is not something you can usually block someone for. I'm actually only dropping in here for a couple of minutes and I'm not an admin just yet, so I can't take a look myself, sorry. But if you want to have some admins to have a look at it and do something about it, drop it to WP:AN/I. But again, I think it still a non-issue and probably doesn't require admin intervention just yet. (The reason I removed your request was that I was doing RC patrol at the time and WP:AIV was getting severly backlogged so I helped out the admins by clearing a few cases that don't require obvious speedy blocks)--Konstable 23:51, 8 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
Look - I was making a small change to the Nine Network which unhappily coincided with Michaelbeckham's revert of some content he clearly didn't like. I noticed that there was a clump of deleted stuff on which I didn't draw any POV conclusions and other missing bits and pieces. I then tried a manual fix to the page and I thought I had notified everyone I thought might have had an interest in the pages's content. Then Michaelbeckham left an unwarranted attack on my page and I responded by asking him to correct it - not unreasonable I would have thought. Many hours later I reminded him with some vehemence. However he chose to rush off to at least two admins to complain instead of responding to me in some way directly. Albatross2147 00:07, 9 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

AMA request

edit

Sorry, we've had a little bit of a backlog at WP:AMARQ lately. I've seen that you've talked to some sysops about your problem too. My question is do you still need the help of an advocate? If you don't, or if you do still want one, just leave a short reply at WP:AMARQ under your request. If you do still want one, the AMA will try to find an advocate for your case. -Royalguard11(Talk·Desk) 00:52, 15 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hey Mike, I just came here to leave you a message about the Adam Boland article and noticed that my name was mentioned above in the section about Rove, so I responded to that as well.
I saw your comment on Talk:Adam_Boland noting the article was a copyright violation. I've removed all the text I could identify as a copyvio. In future, the procedure for dealing with copyvios is to revert to the last version which does not contain a copyright violation. If there is no version in the history which is clean and if the article was created in the last 48 hours, you can tag it with {{db-copyvio}} and it will be speedy deleted. If it's older than 48 hours, it needs to be listed on the copyright violation page. It's great that you noted it on the talk page, but it's much better to get rid of copyvios as quickly as possible by tagging them so an administrator knows to delete it.

Program Feature: Barnstar Brigade
Here in Wikipedia there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go unappreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go unnoticed. As Esperanzians we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. This is where the Barnstar Brigade comes in. The object of this program is to seek out the people which deserve a Barnstar, and help them feel appreciated. With your help, we can recognize more dedicated editors!
What's New?
September elections are upon us! Anyone wishing to be a part of the Advisory Council may list themselves as a candidate from 18 September until 24 September, with the voting taking place from 25 September to 30 September. Those who wish to help with the election staff should also list themselves!
Appreciation Week, a program currently in development, now has its own subpage! Share your good ideas on how to make it awesome there!

November Esperanza Newsletter

edit
Program Feature: Admin Coaching (needs coaches!)
Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach.

Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

What's New?
The Tutorial Drive is a new Esperanza program! In an effort to make complicated processes on Wikipedia easier for everyone, Esperanza working to create and compile a list of tutorials about processes here on Wikipedia. Consider writing one!
A discussion on how Esperanza relates to the encyclopedia has been started; please add your thoughts.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  • The list of proposed programs has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  • There is now a new program: the Tutorial Drive! Consider writing a tutorial on something you are good at doing on Wikipedia.
  • The suggestion of adding a cohesive look to all the Esperanza pages is being considered; join the discussion if you are interested!
  • In order to make a useful interlanguage welcome template, those involved in translation projects will be asked what English Wikipedia policies are most important and confusing to editors coming from other language Wikipedias.
  • A discussion of Esperanza's role in Wikipedia is being held, with all thoughts of all Esperanzians wanted!
  • Shreshth91 informed everyone that he will be leaving the Esperanza council as life is rather busy; his spot will be filled by the runner up from the last election, HighwayCello.

Although having the newsletter appear on everyone's userpage is desired, this may not be ideal for everyone. If, in the future, you wish to receive a link to the newsletter, rather than the newsletter itself, you may add yourself to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Newsletter/Opt Out List.

I modified the link in your header on this page so that it actually works. The way you had it was causing people to edit a page titled User_talk:Michaelbeckham&action=edit&section=new instead of adding a section to this page. I've deleted the incorrectly created page. The content was either relatively old or not that significant. If you want me to move it here, let me know. Thanks. -- JLaTondre 20:46, 24 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for uploading Image:Libbi Gorr.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Better source request for Image:Karen Tso.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Karen Tso.jpg. You provided a source, but it is difficult for other users to examine the copyright status of the image because the source is incomplete. Please consider clarifying the exact source so that the copyright status may be checked more easily. It is best to specify the exact web page where you found the image, rather than only giving the source domain or the URL of the image file itself. Please update the image description with a URL that will be more helpful to other users in determining the copyright status.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source in a complete manner. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page or me at my talkpage. Thank you. Longhair\talk 11:20, 22 April 2007 (UTC) Reply

Dear Michael Beckham,

Thank-you for your message. Unfortunately, I do not believe what I added to the page was vandalism. This actually happened. The appropriate references are on Jimmy Wales, and I was planning to get them from there next.

I will restore the text as soon as I have these references.

Again, thank-you for your message.

"Jimmy Wales was featured in Season 2, and asked questions relating to Wikipedia and the standard irrelevant questions. He answered 4 questions correctly; Hansen said he would add this fact to his Wikipedia page."

If you would be so kind as to identify NPOV context, I would be more than happy to change it. -- Lima Golf Talk | Contributions 11:48, 4 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Everyone makes mistakes, so no problem. Is there not a more appropriate template to use in future? I'm hardly new to Wikipedia, after all. -- Lima Golf Talk | Contributions 11:54, 4 May 2007 (UTC) Reply

Australian morning news template

edit

Several users had expressed concerns that the template was too large and provided very little information. For templates, this is often enough reason to delete. The standards for keeping a template are much higher than keeping an article, so with the conerns about space and relative lack of utility, I closed the debate as delete. Orphaned non-free image (Image:10play right.jpg)

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:10play right.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Fair use images and your edit summary

edit

Hello. I noticed you used the following edit summary on Today (Australian TV program):

"image has rationale now. How about instead of going around tagging everything you add some rationales? It would be at least useful."

I did supply one or two fair use rationales on these images, but for the rest of them I did not feel the use of such fair use images was justified. I am not about to claim fair use unless I am confident the claim of fair use is valid. However, because I recognise that other people may feel such images would have a valid use, and may be able to supply a valid claim, I simply commented the images out, rather than deleting them outright. I hope you understand.

If you feel that the images I removed from the articles in my recent contributions could have a valid fair use claim in those articles, please do provide such a fair use rationale. - Mark 09:34, 28 May 2007 (UTC) Reply

Fox News Channel Reversion

edit

Your reversion to Fox News Channel was inappropriate. Firstly, Ann Coulter was not the originating source; she was reporting on Dr. John Lott's findings in "Freedomnomics." Secondly, a source is not required to be "balanced." A source can have a POV, and using a source with a POV is acceptable when it serves to illustrate differing viewpoints on an issue. - MSTCrow 03:37, 29 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

What is your definition of an "unbalanced source?" What guidelines or rules are you referencing on this? - MSTCrow 19:20, 29 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
  • His revision was perfectly fine. The claim is itself is weasel words. That 81% of contributions by employees go to Democratic destinations is just stupid. First, that doesn't translate to 81% of employees rather the fact that Democrats have for the past few cycles donated a massive number of small money donations is more than enough to explain that. The bigwigs could easily have maxed themselves out with that one 5000 dollar limit. And most employees are not the ones making the decisions about what goes on the air, most are just there to do their jobs and get paid. In other words, Dude! Weak! Tat 06:07, 29 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
Tatarize makes a good point, but I think the answer should have been to incorporate this into the article, not completely remove the data. Although if he is correct, and the "bigwigs" are the ones maxing out their campaign contributions to Democrats, that certainly casts doubt on the premise FNC is a conservative news outlet. I also think his argument could have been worded in a more dispassionate fashion. - MSTCrow 19:39, 29 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
All I request is you get a more balanced source about that report. If you guys want to continue discussion please do so on your own pages but I made my point and I think its fair, if you find the original report or find it somewhere other than Anne's site go for your life. I just don't think we should be sourcing information from a unbalanced source as it casts doubt on its verifiability. - Mike Beckham 05:10, 30 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
At some point I will add the data and source it from the book, but I want to ensure that I have made it clear that I do not believe there is any requirement or guideline that requires that a source be "balanced," and I am not aware of what criteria you are using in making an assessment on whether a source is "balanced" or not, as you have not responded to my query on this. - MSTCrow 17:45, 31 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
My point was that based on number of donations the republican big wigs could max out on support and the two or three 25 dollar donations count more by that pathetic metric. The data is worthless, and misrepresents everything. Unless there is a good source for it, it should be left out. And as your original claim wasn't even supported by the claim, it should be left out anyway. And since all "employees" aren't the ones making the decisions the metric can't be useful anyway. The stat is wrong, worthless, worthless, worthless, worthless, and badly cited. Tat 01:06, 2 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi Michael, great work on the vandal-fighting front! I was going through the Recent Changes and I reverted a vandalizing edit of the above user. Since you'd issued a final warning, I sent the user to AIV, but then I saw there was only the one vandalizing edit here, that you reverted. I'm just wondering why you went straight to only warning and skipped levels 1-3? Is there something about this specific IP I should be on the lookout for, like a dynamic IP or sockpuppetry? Just curious. Thanks and keep up the good work. All the best, ~Eliz81(C) 07:56, 5 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Phew! Thanks for letting me know the coast is clear. I just wanted to check and make sure I didn't have to put on extra heavy vandal fighting armor! :) ~Eliz81(C) 08:06, 5 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Image source problem with Image:Aurora Logo.png

edit

Image Copyright problem

This is an automated message from a robot. You have recently uploaded Image:Aurora Logo.png. The file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 19:37, 11 September 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. If you believe you received this message in error, please notify the bot's owner. Fair use disputed for Image:DanAbrams.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:DanAbrams.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 18:31, 13 September 2007 (UTC) Reply

Fair use rationale for Image:HumphreyBearMed.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:HumphreyBearMed.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rettetast 19:09, 14 September 2007 (UTC) Reply

Replaceable fair use Image:DanAbrams.jpg

edit

Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:DanAbrams.jpg. I noticed the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.

Note that fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if not used in an article), per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Garion96 (talk) 10:22, 16 September 2007 (UTC) Reply

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Natgeoadventure.png)

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Natgeoadventure.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Fair use rationale for Image:2001cast.jpg

([1]) Would be nice to have some discussion somewhere, rather than a brusque reversion. I assume you're up to speed with the discussion at the talk page. --Dweller 08:53, 2 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

It's set up fine. The subst insistents seem to have tangled with the template, but there's no need to subst a template that'll be deleted anyway. I'm one of the major contributors to one of the 2 BOR articles. See the talk page... there's no need for 2 disambig pages and no-one will ever come looking for this one. --Dweller 09:00, 2 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Fox News Usertag

I would like to make a userbox expressing a similar (but not identical) opinion on Fox News, and was wondering if it would be acceptable to use the same color scheme/format as yours. I'll certainly credit you on my user page, or not if you don't want to be. Is this acceptable? --Anoma lee 14:15, 5 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

no, you don't have to ask, but you should. But thank you for letting me! --Anoma lee 09:29, 6 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Michael - Unlike the suggestion in the newspaper article you posted in the FOX Business News entry, Carriage in Australia has not yet been confirmed. I contacted Janet Alshouse the VP for International Distribution at FOX News and FOX Business News who advised that FBN will not be made available internationally until the first quarter of 2008. She also confirmed that carriage deals with Foxtel in Australia and Sky in the UK have not been confirmed. I can send you mt email correspondance with her if you let me have your email address.
