school IP vandal

I just reverted a disruptive edit by this IP address. They didn't start editing right after their last block ran out, but it seems plausible that they just returned from break. It is definite that they have not stopped vandalizing. Would you please look into blocking them? Thank you. PrincessofLlyr (talk) 18:25, 4 January 2010 (UTC)

Urgent admin solution required for my botch job...

Greetings Mentifisto – sorry to drag you away from AIV, but I urgently needed an admin active at this moment. I have just done a botch job of disambiguating Jessica Hall. Basically what happened was that until the edit at 10:36, 9 May 2010 by Rjwilmsi the article had been about a British actress of that name. The following anonymous editor hijacked the page and inserted the details of a US actress of the same name. I reverted the article to the last good version mentioned above, moved that article to Jessica Hall (British actress) and set up a new page, Jessica Hall (US actress), with the details copied from the hijacker’s version and pasted the talk page stuff on each corresponding page. Trouble is, of course, the history. Sorry for making a hash of it, but at least it gives you something interesting to do rather than block vandals all night. Cheers! --Technopat (talk) 23:37, 14 June 2010 (UTC)

Am also posting this at User:Materialscientist, who is now active at AIV, in case you are offline.--Technopat (talk) 00:09, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
Hi - sorry, I'm not offline, but I'm still trying to figure out the steps required. Although if you post it to more than one person it may be resolved sooner. :-) -- Mentifisto 00:14, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for reply. Have just posted it at Materialscientist, but now am worried that there might be an edit conflict. On the other hand, I’m sure that not even the worst vandals get two admins clearing up after them, so I should take it as an honour. Sigh! And thanks, again!--Technopat (talk) 00:22, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
Heh no, you're not that bad! But I think this might be what is done over here (and unfortunately I never paid much attention to it...) -- Mentifisto 00:26, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
I see User:Anthony Appleyard is pretty active over there at the cut and paste. Shall I involve him or is this something you have to sort out once you have started it...--Technopat (talk) 00:37, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
Just got this from Materialscientist: I understand the problem and how to fix it, but I would leave it be - there are only few edits which need to be histmerged into the US article, and their author knows about the article changes. Materialscientist (talk) 00:35, 15 June 2010 (UTC). So I can take my guilty conscience off to bed with me then. Thanks for being out there, Mentifisto. Cheers! --Technopat (talk) 00:42, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

I am hoping that you'll please reconsider the deletion of Frontier3's company site. I have some edits, news stories, etc. that make it more encyclopedic in the writing style. My mistake, shouldn't have published until finished with my links and additions Frontier3 (talk) 13:34, 19 June 2010 (UTC)

The way it was, there weren't any parts that weren't promotional. If you could create an article truly neutral that also satisfies the notability criteria then it wouldn't be deleted, but I don't think there was anything that was salvageable in the previous version. -- Mentifisto 14:17, 19 June 2010 (UTC)

Maybe WP:VG's listed members? That series seems to have nice graphics, by the way - kind of looks like Chrono Cross. -- Mentifisto 17:25, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
Thank you so much!!! I've been looking for that thing!
The Dream Chronicles (series) has its Art Nouveau-inspired 2.5D visual style that likes no ANY OTHER video games that ever made! :x
BTW, Chrono Cross is a RPG huh? While that series is a mixing of adventure game and hidden object game, which is formally typical in casual gaming space. --†hinhin_of_you / buzzworthy / βoy Ünder Ғlowers / Mons†er Ғierce 02:03, 27 August 2010 (UTC)
Yes, it's an RPG (since there is a world to explore would it be 3D? I'm not sure) - incidentally it derived from another game called Radical Dreamers (CC does have surreal dreamlike sequences itself). -- Mentifisto 17:52, 27 August 2010 (UTC)

User talk:204.38.122.2

Hi. This IP started vandalising again immediately the 12 moth block you made expired. They've had their four warnings (six actually) and we have a request at WP:EAR (the wrong place to lodge a complaint) from a user of that IP to block it again. Perhaps it's time already to re block, at least for long enough to demonstrate to them that you weren't kidding last time. Cheers, --Kudpung (talk) 19:35, 4 October 2010 (UTC)

24 now (I'm really not sure if there's any solution with schools...) -- Mentifisto 22:27, 4 October 2010 (UTC)

There is a solution for school IPs

Schools can be soft-blocked in such a way that IPs cannot edit, but creation of name-user accounts is still enabled (ie, not a hardblock). That way, every name-user is responsible for themselves. It takes 4 days for a name to "mature" before they can name-edit sprotected articles (typical school subjects), and it's really no fun to lose that 3 days as a result of one vandalism, which gets you name-account blocked for a long time. Schools and their students learn very quickly this is no fun. 4 days is a long time to wait, if you intend to do mischief, if you have to wait that long EVERY time you do it. But good editors only have to wait that time ONCE, and then only for sprotected articles. No email address is needed, as you know, although people have to remember the passwords that go with their names. Keeping track of all this is more work than the average vandal in the average school wants to do. Which is WHY he's a vandal in the first place. You see? It's all about removing immediate gratification.

BTW, here's another problem IP you might do something about [1]. SBHarris 21:14, 6 October 2010 (UTC)

But your suggestion would require that school IPs are blocked indefinitely, right? -- Mentifisto 14:23, 8 October 2010 (UTC)

Your bot reverted my corrections.

Hello,

I had made corrections to Deepika Padukone's name written in several Indic scripts on her page. But it seems like your bot reverted my corrections. These corrections have been preceded by discussions regarding correct pronunciation on the corresponding talk page. Could you please clarify the reverts.

Hi,

Just realized that these scripts signify the page in the corresponding Wiki language.. so the page will have to be moved to reflect the correct spelling in those respective languages. --Bhanap1708 (talk) 20:52, 19 November 2010 (UTC)

WikiProject Sociology Newsletter: II (April 2010)

Sociology ProjectNews • April 2010
Spreading the meme since August 2006

The Sociology WikiProject is conducting a roll call (or min-census, if you prefer). More then five years down the road, we have over 50 members, but we don't know how many of them are still active in the sociology area. If you are or want to become once again an active contributor to the sociology content on Wikipedia, please move your name from the inactive to the active list on our roll call (or add yourself to the list if you haven't joined yet!).

In other news, we have reactivated the newsletter :) At least, for this announcement. We also have a new, automated to do listing, an active tag and assess project (which has identified about 1,800 sociology articles on Wikipedia, and assessed about 1,3000 of them), and three new userboxes for your self-identification pleasure :) On a final note, I highly recommend watchlisting the Wikipedia:WikiProject Sociology page, so you can be aware of the ongoing discussions.

You have received this newsletter because you are listed as a recipient of WikiProject Sociology Newsletter (Opt-out). • signed

Hey you deleted an article I wrote

Hey, so I just decided recently to have a go at editing wikipedia, and so when I stumbled upon the wikipedia for this aussie band The Jezabels (just search it), and saw they had no article for their third EP I was like, oh well this'll be easy.

Anyway, so I whipped something up, and got it pretty good.

A bot obviously noticed I used an image from outside wikipedia (I didn't know! haha) so I got rid of that. Then it said it wasn't notable enough, which is obviously ridiculous because all their other articles were. Also the format had a couple mistakes here and there. I forgot to label the external link to their official website.

I used a reference, so there's that. Ummm, what else?

Well, I was kinda editing a bit, saving it, editing, saving etc. So it probably looked a little shambly at different stages when I'd made working mistakes etc. Perhaps editing it properly first might help.

Anyway. If you could undelete it that'd be great. Give me some feedback to start me off here on wikipedia. Or I could just re-write it from scratch even though I've done that like 5 times already it feels haha.

Anyway, yeah, that's about it.

Thanks :)

Request to userfy content of deleted article K C Surendra Babu

Hi! I just logged in and received this message about the Speedy deletion nomination of K C Surendra Babu, a page created less than 24 hours ago. I found that the page was already deleted. I would like to request you to kindly userfy the content of deleted article to my userspace, without creating a redirect.

In my opinion, the article was important, as it dealt with one of the most brutal murders of a district police chief in India. It was one of the main reasons for the historic change of governance in the state of Bihar, India in Febraury & October 2005, when the murder of the high ranking police officer, K C Surendra Babu, was still very fresh in the minds of the voters. The issue of lawlessness was the most important in these elections. The 15 year rule of Lalu Yadav led RJD ended, and Nitish Kumar led the JDU+BJP combine to power. However, before I could respond to the notice of deletion, the article was deleted.

Thank you in anticipation. --Tinpisa (talk) 12:06, 31 August 2011 (UTC)

Hey, just saw your comment on the talk page about the feedback dashboard. Glad you like it! (It is a WMF thing.) I wanted to drop by because in addition the continued work on that by developers, Maryana and I were thinking it might be cool to form a small taskforce of people who were interested in answering newbie questions that appear via the dashboard. Probably listed at Wikipedia:Feedback Dashboard. We've done patrolling of it in our free time, and it's actually kind of fun to see people get better at editing etc. after you help them out. I'm not sure if you'd be interested in joining directly, but even if you just have some more thoughts about the best way to go about it, I'd love to hear them. Steven Walling (WMF) • talk 21:49, 4 November 2011 (UTC)

I'd be interested in exploring more of the possibilities that this new tool could result in, and I think, due to my current curiosity, I'll be proactive at monitoring it and try to answer people's concerns if I'm able. (Could we use OTRS-standard replies, I wonder; the responses aren't themselves private, right?) -- Mentifisto 21:54, 4 November 2011 (UTC)
Cool. Currently responses would have to just be public on the user talk page, though I guess you could email people too. In the next iteration it would be in public on the dashboard itself, like the screenshot Erik linked to. Admins can make the feedback hidden if there are any privacy problems etc. Steven Walling (WMF) • talk 22:46, 4 November 2011 (UTC)

It is very difficult to counter/undo the edits of POV trolls and involves much effort and hassle. A brand new user User:Safwanzulfiqar has been granted autoconfirmed status by you when he had two edits only and one of his edits is nothing more than admission of POV bashing in the same article Indo-Pakistani War of 1965 you have given him autoconfirmed permission to edit. This has completely foxed me, as I can not think why that should be done by you. There also does not seem to be any request on his part for the same. Could you kindly elaborate the reason for your action? AshLin (talk) 11:18, 8 November 2011 (UTC)

I apologize if this has caused inconvenience. I'm not very familiar with either military history or geographical conflicts, but the above user contacted us through email with regards to this and since I don't edit these areas myself I said that he could edit them directly himself (but then, of course, he couldn't due to it being semi-protected). He's only done a single edit since, so I don't suppose he's being overly disruptive so far, but I thought some sort of compromise could be reached (although, as I said, I know nothing about these contentious fields, so please feel free to inform me about this). -- Mentifisto 16:18, 8 November 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for the explanation. These things happen. No fault of yours for being helpful. I'm being welcoming to the newbie and trying not to bite him. Perhaps you may like to oversee my entries on his talk page, as a second opinion/oversight. AshLin (talk) 16:31, 8 November 2011 (UTC)
I think your message is more than acceptable; as I know next to nothing about this Indo-Pakistani War I can't comment with regards to whether it's neutral or not. I've read his talk page message and I couldn't see whether there was a clear POV being espoused. I'm assuming that the general consensus is not for what he requested, but then again it seems the war didn't have any clear result. At any rate, I don't think he's really a 'troll' (per the definition on the Internet, as someone intending to cause disruption deliberately). -- Mentifisto 16:38, 8 November 2011 (UTC)
PS. as I've noticed he edited again with potentially even more POV material (and a personal comment in the article, but I assume he just doesn't know that editors don't leave comments like that) I think, if this persists, it would be best to bring it up on WP:ANI for a wider review. If a block was ever needed I think that would be the ideal place to form such a decision, as I don't have much experience in dealing with POV-pushers myself. -- Mentifisto 16:51, 8 November 2011 (UTC)
Sigh, I guess it will have to be that route if he persists. Unfortunately, his English is atrocious hence I really wonder whether he could ever become a useful editor. Normally, people editting the Indo-Pak articles are experienced editors with much better English. Anyway, thanks again. Best of luck with the Feedback Dashboard. :) AshLin (talk) 17:27, 8 November 2011 (UTC)

New Page Patrol survey

New page patrol – Survey Invitation

Hello Lofty abyss/Archive 6! The WMF is currently developing new tools to make new page patrolling much easier. Whether you have patrolled many pages or only a few, we now need to know about your experience. The survey takes only 6 minutes, and the information you provide will not be shared with third parties other than to assist us in analyzing the results of the survey; the WMF will not use the information to identify you.

  • If this invitation also appears on other accounts you may have, please complete the survey once only.
  • If this has been sent to you in error and you have never patrolled new pages, please ignore it.

Please click HERE to take part.
Many thanks in advance for providing this essential feedback.

You are receiving this invitation because you have patrolled new pages. For more information, please see NPP Survey

Joyston Joseph

I'm the editor who speedied Joyston Joseph, so thank you for taking care of it so quickly. I would also request that you take a look at this article, on which I also requested speedy deletion. Of particular note are the editor who created both and this editor that rushed to defend the second article. There's some funny business going on and I've left a note at Joy112's user page indicating my suspicions. Thanks again. --McDoobAU93 17:36, 12 November 2011 (UTC)

I think it would be best if they're dealt with like other new accounts persistent in creating such articles, if they persist (haven't so far). -- Mentifisto 22:42, 12 November 2011 (UTC)

user: Wan Ling Tea House

Hi,

Just seen the auto update from Wiki and have apologised to The_Mark_of_the_Beast who had to delete my wiki page I created by mistake. Thought I was updating my user page.

Again all this scripting gets confusing for us newbies, however I think you have deleted my user page. Is this right? Can we not write about ourselves on these pages? I have read your http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Mentifisto/CSD page and fully understand about the 'page' not just my userID!

Apologies from a slightly baffled Wan Ling.

PS - The aim of this account is to contribute to the many tea culture related pages on WiKi. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wanlingeahouse (talkcontribs) 03:55, 13 November 2011 (UTC)

Ideally, corporations or groups avoid writing about themselves due to a conflict of interest, but it was deleted specifically due to being promotional. -- Mentifisto 11:31, 13 November 2011 (UTC)

Typo fixing...

You're absolutely correct on the typo. I noticed it while I was out of town last night, and rather than log in to try and fix it from my droid, it was one of my top priorities once I'd returned home... only to find that you'd fixed it for me. Hi Mentifisto,

Thanks for signing up for the Feedback Dashboard response team! I wanted to let you know that the tool just got an important update (see here for details). I also wanted to invite you to the IRC office hours session that Steven and I are going to hold this Sunday, December 4. Hope you can make it and share your experience/questions with us! It was deleted because it read like an advert (due to text like "high quality"). Perhaps you could copy the style of writing that other articles on similar companies have, if you recreate this article, or alternatively use the wizard. -- Mentifisto 22:07, 16 December 2011 (UTC)

I wish to have my deleted page back

Hi Mentifisto,

Hope all is well. :)

Back in March of 2009, I had created a page, "Hoopla Doopla" that was deleted by you. It is a business page. Atthe time, the company was only a few weeks old, and this may have been the reason you deleted it. I wish to have the page reinstated. This company has grown over the last 3 years, and has been featured in the national media as one of the best money saving sites on the web. I have media credits and cites to add. Check out the site, www.hoopaldoopla.com.

PS. It was created under another account name i do not remember, but I wish to create it under the new user account, Hoopladoopla.

Thanks!

Berlin hackathon invitation

Mentifisto, I invite you to the yearly Berlin hackathon, 1-3 June. Registration is now open. If you need financial assistance or help with visa or hotel, then please register by May 1st and mention it in the registration form.

This is the premier event for the MediaWiki and Wikimedia technical community. We'll be hacking, designing, teaching, and socialising, primarily talking about ResourceLoader and Gadgets (extending functionality with JavaScript), the switch to Lua for templates, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Labs.

We want to bring 100-150 people together, including lots of people who have not attended such events before. User scripts, gadgets, API use, Toolserver, Wikimedia Labs, mobile, structured data, templates -- if you are into any of these things, we want you to come!

I also thought you might want to know about other upcoming events where you can learn more about MediaWiki customization and development, how to best use the web API for bots, and various upcoming features and changes. We'd love to have power users, bot maintainers and writers, and template makers at these events so we can all learn from each other and chat about what needs doing.

Check out the the developers' days preceding Wikimania in July in Washington, DC and our other events.

Best wishes! - Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation's Volunteer Development Coordinator. Please reply on my talk page, here or at mediawiki.org. Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation Volunteer Development Coordinator 21:24, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

User 198.20.32.130

I see that you blocked 198.20.32.130 for 3 months. Might I suggest that this IP address be blocked for a whole lot longer. Looking at their 'contributions' I see that they have been consistently vandalising for many years. Whilst it's a simple matter to revert edits by such people it can be difficult to make sure that each and every edit is reverted. See Grape's history page; for 3h26m today the article was about apples, carrots and God knows what else. Regards, nagualdesign (talk) 20:02, 12 April 2012 (UTC)

Well, it's a school IP and I assume in three months the academic year may have ended; being hopeful, but next year they may possibly not vandalize... -- Mentifisto 20:58, 12 April 2012 (UTC)

Wikidata is here; please disable any interwiki bots on the English Wikipedia

Hi!

Wikidata has been deployed to the English Wikipedia. Going forward, Wikidata will manage interwiki links. Further information: m:Wikidata/Deployment Questions and <https://blog.wikimedia.de/?p=13892>.

Important note: Bots that continue to add, remove, or update interwiki links on the English Wikipedia may be blocked from editing after Saturday, February 16, 2013.

If you are running pywikipedia's interwiki.py, please update to pyrev:11073 which will automatically prevent your bot from updating links on this wiki.

If you have any questions, please ask at the bot owners' noticeboard. Thank you for your past work maintaining interwiki links. It has been very appreciated and we're looking forward to an even brighter future with Wikidata. Legoktm (talk) 10:37, 14 February 2013 (UTC)

AGK [•] 10:13, 14 October 2013 (UTC)

I have decided to put on a mini-contest within the November 2013 monthly disambiguation contest, on Saturday, November 23 (UTC). I will personally give a $20 Amazon.com gift card to the disambiguator who fixes the most links on that server-day (see the project page for details on scoring points). Since we are not geared up to do an automated count for that day, at 00:00, 23 November 2013 (UTC) (which is 7:00 PM on November 22, EST), I'll take a screenshot of the project page leaderboard. I will presume that anyone who is not already listed on the leaderboard has precisely nine edits. At 01:00, 24 November 2013 (UTC) (8:00 PM on November 23, EST), I'll take a screenshot of the leaderboard at that time (the extra hour is to give the board time to update), and I will determine from that who our winner is. I will credit links fixed by turning a WP:DABCONCEPT page into an article, but you'll have to let me know me that you did so. Here's to a fun contest. Note that according to the Daily Disambig, we currently have under 256,000 disambiguation links to be fixed. If everyone in the disambiguation link fixers category were to fix 500 links, we would have them all done - so aim high! Cheers! bd2412 T 03:09, 18 November 2013 (UTC)

Category removal

Why was this category removed? -- Mentifisto 15:32, 22 November 2013 (UTC)

Knowing me there was likely a reason at the time, but after doing some research, and wracking my brain, I just can't seem to recall what it may have been. (Though I did see that during that time there was apparently a deletion discussion for that category which was "open" for a few months before it was closed as "keep" in March 2009.)
Be that as it may, and with that in mind, I've gone ahead and reverted the removal for now.

Bot flag on frwiki

Hello,

As a bureaucrat on frwiki, I was checking the activity of the bots, and noticed that yours had been inactive for at least 6 months. Morover, the interwikis are now centralized on Wikidata. It is not reasonable that an unmonitored account keeps a bot flag, as it may be more easily hacked. Do you wish to keep the bot flag? If this is the case, please tell me so (preferably on my talk page on frwiki, otherwise on my talk page on this project). Without any answer from you, the bot flag will be removed in one month.

Thank you for your comprehension, Litlok (talk) 22:36, 10 July 2014 (UTC)

ArbCom elections are now open!

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Extended confirmed protection

Hello, Mentifisto. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:48, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Hopefully once the source is defeated, if not it probably wouldn't be just online that this organic disease will spread to; I heard even children are becoming bullies to emulate their role model, although none of what I noticed is first-hand since I'm not in that country (my only comfort, although presidents can unilaterally wage war apparently, which is why not just one country could be in trouble...) -- Mentifisto 14:48, 29 September 2016 (UTC)

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. New deal for page patrollers

Hi Lofty abyss,

In order to better control the quality of new pages, keep out the spam, and welcome the genuine newbies, the current system we introduced in 2011 is being updated and improved. The documentation and tutorials have also been revised and given a facelift. Most importantly a new user group New Page Reviewer has been created.

Under the new rule, you may find that you are temporarily unable to mark new pages as reviewed. However, this is nothing to worry about - most current experienced patrollers are being accorded the the new right without the need to apply, and if you have significant previous experience of patrolling new pages, we strongly encourage you to apply for the new right as soon as possible - we need all the help we can get, and we are now providing a dynamic, supportive environment for your work.

Find out more about this exiting new user right now at New Page Reviewers and be sure to read the new tutorial before applying. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 04:29, 13 November 2016 (UTC)

A new user right for New Page Patrollers

Hi Lofty abyss.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)

Invitation to WikiProject Portals

Hi,

I noticed your interest in portals. Here is what has been going on behind-the-scenes with them...

Currently, there are about 1500 portals, comprised of 150,000 pages in portal space, the rest beyond the 1500 being subpages. Most of those subpages contain an excerpt, copied and pasted from some article. Such excerpts never change, and they go stale over time (no longer matching the original source material).

The Portal WikiProject was rebooted on April 17th, and has grown to 68 members. We've been busy redesigning the portal model so that portals will not need all those subpages.

The design concept called "selective transclusion", which is used for migrating excerpts (moving them to the base page), does so by displaying part of an article the same as a template. An added benefit of this is that it also keeps them fresh, by always showing the current version of the content that is transcluded.

We are also working on ways to make excerpted content, and listed entries, dynamic, so that the material or links shown automatically change over time without the intervention of an editor. Selected articles, could be set up to change daily, for example, to present a different article each day. This can even be made to show a different article every time a user visits the page. Currently, we can do this from a set list. We're trying to make it so that the list is updated automatically from an external source that is regularly maintained.

Other automated solutions are being sought or developed for each section type of portals. To automatically update and archive news, did you know entries, and so on.

Once we get a fully automated design worked out, it will be applied to all the portals that do not have dedicated maintainers. This will reduce the amount of maintenance they need. A single editor will then be able to watch over far more portals than before, ideally, with each portal taking up only a single page in portal space.

The Portal WikiProject is dedicated to updating, upgrading, and maintaining the entire portal system and every portal in it.

Come check us out, and if you like what you see, feel free to join.    — The Transhumanist   05:36, 9 May 2018 (UTC)

P.S.: Mentifisto, we need people who can ask intelligent questions, and see things that others might not. And who may have an idea or a thousand. -TT

Thank you very much

The RfC discussion to eliminate portals was closed May 12, with the statement "There exists a strong consensus against deleting or even deprecating portals at this time." This was made possible because you and others came to the rescue. Thank you for speaking up.

By the way, the current issue of the Signpost features an article with interviews about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

I'd also like to let you know that the Portals WikiProject is working hard to make sure your support of portals was not in vain. Toward that end, we have been working diligently to innovate portals, while building, updating, upgrading, and maintaining them. The project has grown to 80 members so far, and has become a beehive of activity.

Our two main goals at this time are to automate portals (in terms of refreshing, rotating, and selecting content), and to develop a one-page model in order to make obsolete and eliminate most of the 150,000 subpages from the portal namespace by migrating their functions to the portal base pages, using technologies such as selective transclusion. Please feel free to join in on any of the many threads of development at the WikiProject's talk page, or just stop by to see how we are doing. If you have any questions about portals or portal development, that is the best place to ask them.

If you would like to keep abreast of developments on portals, keep in mind that the project's members receive updates on their talk pages. The updates are also posted here, for your convenience.

Again, we can't thank you enough for your support of portals, and we hope to make you proud of your decision. Sincerely,    — The Transhumanist   00:15, 27 May 2018 (UTC)

P.S.: if you reply to this message, please {{ping}} me. Thank you. -TT

  Guideline and policy news

  Technical news

  • A new tool is available to help determine if a given IP is an open proxy/VPN/webhost/compromised host.

  Arbitration

  • The Arbitration Committee announced two new OTRS queues. Both are meant solely for cases involving private information; other cases will continue to be handled at the appropriate venues (e.g., WP:COIN or WP:SPI).
    • paid-en-wp wikipedia.org has been set up to receive private evidence related to abusive paid editing.

Block upgrade

You blocked a few specific IPv6 in the 2600:1015:b15e:4077::/64 range based on vandalism to John Wayne Gacy‎. It's part of a longer and wider pattern, so I blocked the whole 64 for longer and removed your shorter non-range blocks. Figured I'd better explain it since it's not obvious that my unblocking is actually just to make range-block more visible rather than to allow the IPs to edit:) DMacks (talk) 02:37, 2 April 2019 (UTC)

Time does indeed fly by, but while those articles are old now (and as is obvious I prefer to do other things, but might as well try everything)... what I ended up missing recently, another page from a different namespace, was a certain multilock... sometimes even what is obvious is missed. -- Lofty abyss 22:47, 3 April 2019 (UTC)
