RfA nomination

I think you're a great candidate for adminship. I've had you on my to-nominate list since January, and I didn't nominate you earlier only because of concerns about your time with the project. I think you've gained more experience, and I would like to see you part of the admin team. I have a good eye for admin candidates, and I believe I have nominated seven or eight candidates successfully to adminship (all passed nearly unanimously; in fact one of my current noms, AzaToth, has surpassed WP:100). I have no idea what he is talking about ... We have NOT been spammed, I am the webmaster and visit the site several times daily - and Network54 has lots of spam guards in place. Very strange (I received another report just a minute before yours). What version is your Firefox at? Mine is 2.0.0.3. I did make some changes yesterday but they were minor. Can you look at the Javascript console (Tools/Error Console) and look for any red X's (errors) towards the bottom, just after you load any article page? (It may help to press "Clear" before loading the page.) The error messages are very helpful. It is definitely working for others, including me, because I see some edits on "Recent changes" right now. –Outriggr § 03:31, 23 March 2007 (UTC)

OK, this is odd. The script is working with my Firefox 2.0.0.3, but not my Internet Explorer. Eariler today I was getting a page load error message with Internet Explorer but am not even getting that now. My Firefox Javascript console is blank. Hi Iamunknown - I think the number of comments on the deletion process reflects the importance of the issue. It was something that I never considered and when I received your first post, did not think it necessary. I gave it some thought,then it made sense. Another reason I just thought of is that it is a good way to advertise that non-admins can some close XfDs, which will help reduce the backlog. As for your request, I generally don't take anything as an insult on Wikipedia, lol. It's not a problem, but thank you very much for that apology. A thing I have noticed about you is your ability to fully accept responsibility for your mistakes and learn from them very quickly. I think I could have been nicer both in my response on AN/I and my "oppose" vote on your Rfa. It's just that at the time you made your statement, I was having a very bad, bad time on Wikipedia. I had just had a serious argument with a couple of users and had resulted to very juvenile name-calling, which is very out of character for me since I try very hard to be nice. I've apologized to both of those users profusely and am now feeling a lot better about my time here. Stevenstone93 is just a kid who has some ignorant ass opinions that I'm sure he'll grow out of, and I want to help him, here and in life. He's actually written a decent article since being unblocked. Thanks! I did go through all your posts from March 14th on and I think that you responded reasonably under the circumstances. Things on this one grew so fast in a variety of locations that by the time I became aware of the situation and arrived back to the developed issues, I knew that I needed additional input and the passage of time to better reflect on the situation. It was fortunate (at least for the issue) that I had a pending RfA to bring in comments from neutral persons on the matter. Since the matter became public through my RfA, I wanted to make sure that I made a public apology in my RfA before it closed but didn't want to comment too soon with a less than adaquate post. I was new to closing XfDs, too. I found it very interesting that you and I had opposing views on a topic and found out that we both were right (or perhaps both were wrong!). Your initial post came across as being very sincere and I really respect that. Also, you had sage advise at a time when I really needed it. You might enjoy this post. RfA requires about at least 70% if not 80%. My RfA is not near that. My RfA is almost closed, so it looks like it will be months before I can take a stab at the mop. I know that rfa requires that large of a majority...it kind of stinks. It's funny; I really seriously thought you were an administrator when I first left the image-related note on your talk page and especially when you closed that tfd. Originally acting admin and DRV

For your information, DRV precedent is that if the originally acting admin chooses to change their action, or admits that it is erroneous, the DRV will end at that point and appropriate new action occur. Normally the appropriate new action is relisting at XfD, but others are possible. Deletion reviews primary mission is to review deletion decisions. But another reason for existing is to provide a forum so we don't get wheel warring over deletion decisions. The third rationale is to gain cloture, which is why we are often quite abrupt with repeated review nominations that offer no new data. GRBerry 12:53, 29 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi GRBerry. Thanks for the heads up. Here was my line of thinking. If a DRV was requested, the requestor had not resolved the issue in discussion with the administrator in question. DRV is used to determine by consensus whether the AfD was interpreted incorrectly by the closer. Since the consensus discussion already was in progress, I didn't think that one person's view was sufficient to counter the reasoning of those who endorsed the closure, even if that one person's view was the administrator in question. To me, it did not seem fair to avoid giving consideration to those who took the time to participate in the DRV to endorsed the closure. That is why I posted at DRV "I don't think you can take unilateral action since its now at deletion review."
On receiving your post that DRV precedent is that if the originally acting admin chooses to change their action during the DRV, or admits that it is erroneous during the DRV, the DRV will end at that point and appropriate new action occur. I don't disagree with this, but I've never seen it anywhere. As a result, I reread through Deletion debates, Deletion policy, Deletion process, Guide to deletion, Deletion review, Deletion guidelines for administrators, Undeletion policy, and Deletion precedents. Here is what I found.

Closing AfD admins are required to exercise their judgment in order to make sure that the decision complies with the spirit of all Wikipedia policy and with the project goal. The closing admin will review the article, carefully read the AFD discussion, weigh all the facts, evidence and arguments presented and determine if consensus was reached on the fate of the article. Deletion Review is a forum where deletion decisions may be reviewed by the community usually over 10 days. Deletion review exists to review the decision of closing admin in deleting an article. The Review has the authority to overturn AFD decisions.

I am embarrassed to say that I could not locate the DRV precedent you listed. I would appreciate your helping me out to locate the precedent so that I better understand it. Thanks. : ) -- Jreferee 16:49, 29 March 2007 (UTC)

Deletion review precedents are not extensively documented. The best documentation that I can point you to for this is User:GRBerry/DRVGuide#Timeframe, first bullet. Also relevant is the first bullet of the "Review closings" section. (And, as far as I know, that entire page is the best documentation we have for deletion review precedent, even though it wasn't intended to serve that role.) Frankly, I think deletion review needs better documentation because it is (fortunately) a page and process that most of our editors and administrators encounter only rarely. Otherwise I wouldn't have written that guide at all. We've had a bit of existential angst about deletion review recently, see Wikipedia talk:Deletion review#What is the role of deletion review. So it is hard to write a good guide to how DRV should operate. Right now, most of the precedent is in the heads of myself and more significantly Trialsanderrors, and Xoloz as the primary closers of deletion review for at least the last 15 months. Actually, I gave you two general personal user awards (PUAs) and the drives awards committee gave you one barnstar and two general personal user awards (PUAs). The two PUA's I gave you for each significant improvement to Metadatatest during the drive. The two PAU's given to you by the drive's award committee were for your assessing 430 articles (which is what the drive gave to others assessing similar amounts). The barnstar was for saving our behinds with your script. Without your script, the drive probably would have assessed no more than 7,000 to 10,000 articles. Your script added an additional 35,000 assessments to the drive, hence the barnstar. I'm also trying to get you a plug in the Signpost. Hi Cla68 - Thank you for responding to my Q7 in your RfA. Your RfA closed 2-1/2 hours after your Q7 response, so I was unable to reply in the RfA. Since the RfA is closed, the point seems moot. If there is anything to be taken away from your RfA is that SlimVirgin and Mantanmoreland do not seem to think that you are trustworthy and they still feel hurt. I do not know Mantanmoreland, but have seen enough of SlimVirgin's posts to know that she is honest in expressing what she believes. Other than deleting the diffs, there isn't much else that can be done about the past. In the end, it comes down to that some people still feel hurt by what happened and you are in a position help resolve their feelings. Jimbo put it best in early March 2007 when he indicated that Wikipedia is built on us trusting each other and on human understanding and forgiveness of errors.[2] I think that your efforts to generate understanding were not well received because trust needs to come first. If you work on repairing SlimVirgin and Mantanmoreland's trust in you, there eventually may be understanding and then perhaps forgiveness. Best wishes. -- Jreferee 15:18, 6 April 2007 (UTC)

Thank-you for the advice on the RfA. Anything negative related to the Gary Weiss article touches a very raw nerve in a certain few individuals and results in a much more intense response than what appears to happen with similar situations in other areas in the project and I'm not sure why. It generates such an intense response that I'm not sure if it's repairable, even if I avoid any controversial actions for the next year. Anyway, I'm continuing on with editing Pacific War-related articles and hopefully you'll see several of them on the FA nominations page in the future. Cla68 22:41, 6 April 2007 (UTC)

Please see the banner Template:Filmbio and help add all the different project categories for actors, directors, cinematographers, producers, editors, score composers I have tested it out for appearance and looks very good - I am not permitted to edit the biography template and why doesn't anybody ever listen at biography? I am unsure what you mean by adding the different project categories for actors, directors, cinenmatographers, producers, editors, and score composers to the template. Also, the requirements for adding a parameter to the WPBiography template are (1) the workgroup is shown to be active, (2) a spokesperson for the workgroup request the added parameter, and (3) a tech person OKs the additional code and complexity. It looks like someone already requested that a Actors and filmmakers workgroup parameter be added to the WPBiography template and that a filmbio-work-group parameter was added to the WPBiography template. -- Jreferee 17:34, 12 April 2007 (UTC)

False edit

On January 20, you made this edit in which you described me as interested in participating in April Fools' pranks, writing it so that it appeared I had signed the list myself. Hi Everyking. By mid-January 2007, April Fools Main Page 2007 project was repeating the same errors as past April Fools Main Page projects. Since the errors were the result of a lack of structure to the project, I made significant revisions to the April Fools Main Page 2007 page in an attempt to bring the project under control. One of these was to create an initial list of Wikipedians interested in the April Fools Main Page project to provide an example to others on how they may add their name to the project. As I indicated in the edit summary to my January 20, 2007 post, I was the one who added the initial list of Wikipedians interested the April Fool's Main Page. I apologize for not making that clear on the project page as well. In creating that initial list of fifteen user names, I copied the history of the April Fools Main Page between March 6, 2006 and January 20, 2007, pasted it into Microsoft Word, sorted the list by user name, and attempted to add only those names having four or more posts to the April Fools Main Page project. Here are fourteen names from that list of fifteen names with the number of posts next to their name: AndonicO (9), Ashibaka (4) David Levy (11), Deathphoenix (37), Durova (8), Earth (6), Go for it! (7), Jreferee (8), Lar (7), Lord Voldemort (7), Nerd42 (5), Smurrayinchester (8), The Placebo Effect (8), Zafiroblue05 (7). At that time, there were about seventy other users having three or less posts to the April Fools Main Page that were not added to the list. You only had two posts at that time and should not have been added to the initial list. Alphabetically, the name Everyking appeared just below the name Earth in the Deathphoenix • Durova • Earth • Everyking string of names from the April Fools Main Page project March 6, 2006 to January 20, 2007 history. In copying Deathphoenix, Durova, and Earth's information to add to the list, I mistakenly copied "Everyking" as well, which is how your name got added to list. Until I received your April 12, 2007 post on my talk page, I was unaware of your March 2006 opposition to the April Fool's Main Page project. My significant revisions to the April Fools Main Page 2007 project were a well-intentioned attempt to further the goals of the project, not hurt it. I do appreciate your correcting my mistake today. I am sorry if you were hurt by my mistake and am sorry for giving the impression that you supported the April Fools Main Page 2007 project. -- Jreferee 17:03, 12 April 2007 (UTC)
