political controversies in australia seems to be too big, not sure if there is a toned down version, controversial development proposals in australia by state, smells better... happy new year by the way!!! JarrahTree 09:52, 3 January 2016 (UTC)
- HNY to you too! I'm not too concerned about categories. Something a bit more toned down may be a bit better, but its probably not worthwhile creating a new category - will probably be deleted for being too small, or for having the potential to be too large / open ended, or something else in the CFD rules. Anyway, because it is controversial, the article will be one to keep an eye on, in terms of bias / NPOV (from either/any side of issue). Cheers, - Evad37 [talk] 10:13, 3 January 2016 (UTC)
- @JarrahTree: I'm also thinking of splitting Roe Highway § Stage 8 / Fremantle Eastern Bypass into a separate Fremantle Eastern Bypass article (leaving a short summary behind), so that it doesn't overwhelm the rest of the Roe Highway content. But there's few references in that section at the moment, so I probably need some more/better refs first, or at least sources for a Further reading section, before actually doing a split. - Evad37 [talk] 10:25, 3 January 2016 (UTC)
- Fre bypass stuff is like archaeology [1]... it goes for decades on and off and up and down like the tide in the NT, youll need seasickness tabs for the reading the refs for that one JarrahTree 10:58, 3 January 2016 (UTC)

- Yes, TAFI articles don't always have the most pleasant images. Anyway, I think Reflinks is what you're after (its quick and dirty, but much less time than manually formatting {{cite web}} templates) - Evad37 [talk] 14:31, 1 February 2016 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

Thanks for the Todo script! —D'Ranged 1 | VTalk : 14:44, 26 February 2016 (UTC) |
- @D'Ranged 1: I'm glad you like it! Do you have any feature requests or suggestions? - Evad37 [talk] 15:12, 26 February 2016 (UTC)
- Not as yet; I haven't used it much in less than an hour since I discovered it, lol! I appreciate your asking, though.
- Without even using it I actually do have some comments. Maybe change it to CamelCase: ToDo? It would also be great if it took up less room on the menu bar (mine's crowded!) Would it be possible to have it be a drop-down on the same menu as Read, Edit, etc., with the "Add to Todo" listed first? Additionally, is there a way to programmatically force the "View Todo" to open in a new page so as not to disrupt editing? Lastly, with or without the drop-down menu, perhaps +ToDo and →ToDo would shorten the space required. If none of this is possible, it's still an excellent addition to my toolkit, and I really, really appreciate it! Thanks again!
- —D'Ranged 1 | VTalk : 15:31, 26 February 2016 (UTC)
- @D'Ranged 1: Thanks for the feedback. Some of your suggestions are already possible through the customisations described at User:Evad37/ToDoLister, such as specifying shorter labels for the links and placing them in a different part of the interface. Just to clarify, when you say
change it to CamelCase: ToDo
, do you mean in the add/view links or the location of the userspace subpage (or both)? The other suggestions seem feasible to implement as options (i.e. I've seen other scripts do something similar and/or I have an idea of how they can be achieved). Cheers, Evad37 [talk] 16:18, 26 February 2016 (UTC)- For the CamelCase
ToDo
, I'd do both, or at least create a redirect to the subpage if you change the display of the view. I hadn't yet checked out the customizations available and will do so. Thanks! - As an aside,
{{U|}}
functions just like{{ping|}}
, but is shorter, just FYI.—D'Ranged 1 | VTalk : 17:00, 26 February 2016 (UTC)- Okay, I played around with the script per the instructions and am generally pleased; thanks again. One small quibble. I can't seem to get the Add to ToDo link to display above the View ToDo link in the drop-down menu. Is this not possible, or have I missed something? I tried changing the order the customized names are listed in my common.js to no avail:
importScript('User:Evad37/ToDoLister.js'); // [[User:Evad37/ToDoLister]]
var todo_portlet = "p-cactions";
var todo_subpage = "ToDo"; // Subpage where the to-do list entry be added
← Speaking Pirate??? LOL! If not, s/b...is to be added
var todo_addlabel = "+ Todo"; // Custom label for the link. Replace quoted text with your desired name.
var todo_viewlabel = "→ToDo"; // Custom label for the link. Replace quoted text with your desired name.
- Thanks for any help you may offer!
- —D'Ranged 1 | VTalk : 23:58, 26 February 2016 (UTC) Please use a notifier such as
{{U|D'Ranged 1}}
to reply to me—I'm not watching this talk page. Thanks!- Sorry, I haven't yet made that (or any other) change to script. It should be possible in the near future, once I've coded and tested it. - Evad37 [talk] 00:07, 27 February 2016 (UTC)
- @D'Ranged 1: I've added this option now, just put
var todo_addfirst = "yes";
in your common.js (I know I could use{{u}}
but I'm used to using{{ping}}
now, which also allows you to ping multiple users) - Evad37 [talk] 01:21, 27 February 2016 (UTC)- Awesome sauce! Thank you so much; it works like a charm! This will prevent cluttering up my browser bookmarks even further and put all the WP pages in one handy-dandy place that's easy to get to. Bless you, bless you, bless you!
- —D'Ranged 1 | VTalk : 01:32, 27 February 2016 (UTC)
- @D'Ranged 1: you can now add
var todo_viewnew = "yes";
in your common.js to make the View link open in a new tab or window. - Evad37 [talk] 04:49, 27 February 2016 (UTC)
- @D'Ranged 1: you can now add

Thanks! If you're documenting this on your script page, holding down the shift
key forces a new window rather than a new tab. Unfortunately, this works great, but the Add link is no longer functional. :-(
—D'Ranged 1 | VTalk : 04:57, 27 February 2016 (UTC)
- @D'Ranged 1: I'll add a note re the shift key. Can you explain what happens you try to add a link - does it come up with an error message or anything? (It's still working for me, so I'm not sure what's happening here) - Evad37 [talk] 05:05, 27 February 2016 (UTC)
- I commented out all the customizations so it's back to showing up in the top menu (same place Watchlist, etc. show up) rather than the drop-down under More. The
View ToDo
works fine. If I hover overAdd to ToDo
, the link is underlined, but rather than my cursor changing to a hand with pointing finger, it's an I-beam cursor and clicking results in nothing happening at all—no error message, no dialogue box, nothing. Sorry! - —D'Ranged 1 | VTalk : 05:13, 27 February 2016 (UTC)
- @D'Ranged 1: I'm really not sure why the link would have stopped working for you . I think we might need to ask the experts at WP:VPT - Evad37 [talk] 05:35, 27 February 2016 (UTC)
- I've temporarily put an old version at User:Evad37/ToDoLister/old.js, can you try using that script and see what happens? - Evad37 [talk] 05:39, 27 February 2016 (UTC)
- I don't know what magic is afoot. The latest version, with all the customizations, seems to be working perfectly now. I swear I purged the page over and over previously to ensure it was reading the right thing, but to no avail. Anyway, all's well now. Thank you, and sorry for the extra investigation/testing/whatever I caused. What a pain!

thoughts?
roads in country towns - ok to start streets in Kal (or wherever), western australia as parts of larger cat roads in western australia? your advice would be appreciated as am doing some in albany and other towns later... JarrahTree 05:50, 3 May 2016 (UTC)
- @JarrahTree: You may run into problems with WP:SMALLCAT - how many notable streets are there going to be in most towns? What I would do is have categories for the regions, and then only create further categories for towns if/when there are enough articles. So the structure would be something like:
- Category:Roads in Western Australia
- Category:Roads in REGION, Western Australia
- Category:Streets in TOWN, Western Australia (only if there are several notable streets -- if not, put that street in the region category)
- Category:Roads in REGION, Western Australia
- Category:Roads in Western Australia
- - Evad37 [talk] 06:37, 3 May 2016 (UTC)
- at a rough guess, albany council area has 10 + if one included hinterland
- at a good guess, kalgoorlie boulder has also 10 +
- at a calculated guess, gerladton and bunbury have 10 +
at this stage anyways... JarrahTree 07:18, 3 May 2016 (UTC)
- 10+ articles should be good, its really when its less than 6–7 that it may be a problem - Evad37 [talk] 08:57, 6 May 2016 (UTC)
A day later and i look at the wording of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Roads_in_Great_Southern_region_of_Western_Australia and I am a bit concerned, does it pass the test? JarrahTree 00:38, 4 May 2016 (UTC)
- @JarrahTree:I would have waited till there were a few more articles in the Great Southern cat before creating the Albany cat. If there's not many articles to go under the region cat, then having 'in town' subcats doesn't really help reader navigation (especially in this case since the articles are disambiguated with ", Albany"). But if there are going to be more articles forthcoming, as expected, I'm not sure its worth the bother changing things now. - Evad37 [talk] 08:57, 6 May 2016 (UTC)
- ok - thanks for your reply JarrahTree 10:16, 6 May 2016 (UTC)

Infobox Australian road
Category:Australian road articles using deprecated parameters only listed 6 articles that use route_image
, and only 2 of those were using the parameter for a route logo. However, I knew there were more articles with logos so I added some more tracking code and identified a few articles, like EastLink (Melbourne), that were using image
for the logo. I've added logo
as a field specifically for route logos so we can get all of these in the one field. There are still probably more articles with logos in the image field, so we'll have to fix these as we find them. --AussieLegend (✉) 12:06, 14 May 2016 (UTC)

Your scripts are simple and unglamorous, but they're extraordinarily helpful when closing discussions. Thank you! ~ Rob13Talk 14:53, 13 August 2016 (UTC) |
- I have one more feature request, if you're still taking them. Currently, the entire comment is bolded, but for difficult discussions I often provide multi-sentence rationales explaining the result. Could the script be altered so it won't insert the final ''' to end the bolding if I insert it earlier? i.e. if I type "delete'''. Blah blah blah blah closing rationale.", the script sees the ''' and doesn't close the bold tag. ~ Rob13Talk 15:28, 13 August 2016 (UTC)

FAC voluntary mentoring scheme
During a recent lengthy discussion on the WP:FAC talkpage, several ideas were put forward as to how this procedure could be improved, particularly in making it more user-friendly towards first-time nominees. The promotion rate for first-timers at FAC is depressingly low – around 16 percent – which is a cause for concern. To help remedy this, Mike Christie and I, with the co-operation of the FAC coordinators, have devised a voluntary mentoring scheme, in which newcomers will guided by more experienced editors through the stages of preparation and submission of their articles. The general format of the scheme is explained in more detail on Wikipedia: Mentoring for FAC, which also includes a list of editors who have indicated that they are prepared to act as mentors.
Would you be prepared to take on this role occasionally? If so, please add your name to the list. By doing so you incur no obligation; it will be entirely for you to decide how often and on which articles you want to act in this capacity. We anticipate that the scheme will have a trial run for a few months before we appraise its effectiveness. Your participation will be most welcome. Brianboulton (talk) 18:09, 29 August 2016 (UTC)

your opinion
Anthony Road, and Orr Street, Queenstown are two very different types of roads of western tasmania, it would be good to capture in a category - your suggestions would be of value - I have thought of roads of western tasmania - ie in towns and in the bush - or something else. your thoughts would be appreciated JarrahTree 11:20, 25 September 2016 (UTC)
- I think Roads in... would be a better match to existing categories, rather than Roads of... – as per Category:Roads in Australia and its subcategories. I don't see a problem with having a region-level category that includes both "bush" and "town" type roads. - Evad37 [talk] 11:41, 25 September 2016 (UTC)
- ok so roads in western tasmania seems reasonable to have urban and bush roads. thanks JarrahTree 11:49, 25 September 2016 (UTC)

some more tassie roads - what would be the best art to reverse engineer added info for them ? Anthony Road was an earlier one (ie not last ngth) - but the newer ones like Zeehan Highway has the box, but I was bit unsure where to check inf as to filling the box JarrahTree 01:09, 15 October 2016 (UTC)
- @JarrahTree: Easiest way for any Australian road article is to preview the article, then check the links that appear (during preview only) at the bottom of the infobox. The documenttaion at Template:Infobox_Australian_road#Parameters is always a good starting point to figure out what the not-yet-filled-out parameters do (and I recently sorted the parameters into groups based on the parts of the infobox they apply to). The Preferred usage guidelines has example code with short explanations at the bottom of the page (and more complete explanations above). Otherwise, check the Examples page, which has example of code and resulting infoboxes side by side. - Evad37 [talk] 01:36, 15 October 2016 (UTC)

Hi! Looking at BRFA, I can see, that you can simplify 1st and 2nd point there. This query does the job. It should be possible to simplify it even more, by replacing SPARQL with "Uses items/props" field (at "Wikidata" tab), but hmm, that isn't quite working. --Edgars2007 (talk/contribs) 07:30, 16 October 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks Edgars2007, that will be simpler. I did try putting a SPARQL query into Petscan before, but couldn't at the time work out how to get Wikipedia articles in the output rather than Wikidata items. - Evad37 [talk] 01:49, 17 October 2016 (UTC)

Closeafd.js
Hey Evad, would you be interested in taking over maintenance of User:Mr.Z-man/closeAFD2.js? You did a fantastic job with the other scripts so I thought I'd ask. A lot of editors use it, but it hasn't been updated in a long time... It has some bugs and I have feature ideas with nowhere to put them. Eh? czar 07:27, 29 December 2016 (UTC)
- @Czar: I can certainly look into it... but it may take some time, because what I think I'd like to do is a substantial rewrite of this and my other xfd closing scripts. That way, they could share more common code and features, and many bug fixes / additional features would only need to be applied once. Anyway, what features do you have in mind? - Evad37 [talk] 00:50, 30 December 2016 (UTC)
- Of course, but I wouldn't let the burden of a full rewrite stop incremental updates, but that's for you to determine. I'll start compiling a list (I don't know where I put my old list) but the most glaring issue right now is unlinking deleted articles. For instance, a discussion closes as "delete" and the closer almost always should remove redlinks created by the deletion (articles that linked to the deleted article). There is a Twinkle tool for this but (1) it requires navigating to the deleted page to click the "unlink" tool, (2) the unlink rationale is not automatically filled, and (3) the linked pages are not clickable, so it's hard to verify whether it's appropriate to remove the link (it usually is). But that's just one idea, if you have any suggestions czar 07:07, 30 December 2016 (UTC)
