Wikification

edit

Process

edit
  1. Find an article to work on. Find an article to wikify at Category:Articles that need to be wikified. Many editors choose to work on the oldest articles first, so that none of them sit around for too long waiting for attention. It should be relatively easy to wikify an article even if you are not familiar with the subject.
  2. Check if the article is a copyright violation. There are a few red flags that indicate text was probably illegally copied into Wikipedia. User:Kjkolb/Copyvio has a quick guide. Instructions for reporting violations are at Wikipedia:Copyright problems.
  3. Check if another article already exists on this subject. Use the search button at the left of the screen to check for duplicate articles, and create a redirect if necessary.
  4. Add wikilinks. Where appropriate, make links to other articles by putting "[[" and "]]" on either side of relevant words. Read the Wikipedia guidelines on this, Build the web and Make only links relevant to the context, for guidance on when it is and is not appropriate. A helpful tool for adding links is Can We Link It?, although its suggestions should be applied judiciously in the light of current advise in the styleguides. Note that full-date autoformatting is no longer encouraged.
  5. Format the lead. Create or improve the lead paragraph.
  6. Arrange section headers. Arrange section headers as described at Wikipedia:Guide to layout.
  7. Add an infobox if applicable. Add an Infobox if it is appropriate for the article.
  8. Remove the {{wikify}} tag. This will remove it from the list.
  9. Add other maintenance tags. If the article needs any other work, add the corresponding tag(s) from Wikipedia:Template messages/Cleanup.
  10. Enhance your edit summary. You can encourage others to help with the wikification backlog by using something like the following as your edit summary when you save your changes:

Dead-end Pages

edit

"This is a list of dead-end pages (see the listing for the date it was last updated). The pages on this list contain no internal links to other Wikipedia articles. Most of these pages need an editor to wikify them. The links' purpose is to build the web, but one must remember to only make links that are relevant to the context. Useful tools to help adding internal links are the wikifyer (look out for the allwiki effect), and Nickj's Can We link it? tool." -- Wikipedia:Dead-end pages

Philosophy

edit

  • Optimism should have a separate page that focuses on the philosophical idea of optimism and distinguishes the philosophical view from "positive thinking" and other everyday uses of the word.
  • Philosophy of social science, has some okay points but requires elaboration on Wittgenstein and Winch, perhaps other linguistic critiques, whether logical positivist or postmodernist.
  • Exchange value needs to be redone, it shouldn't be under 'Marxist theory'- although it's an important component of Marxist theory it's also vital for all economics. That said the article's weight on Marx is also absurd.
  • German Idealism and the articles related to it may need to be rewritten or expanded to avoid undue weight on Arthur Schopenhauer.
  • Protected values first section confuses right action and values and needs a copy edit, moving and wikifying
  • Quality (philosophy) needs a more clear explanation.
  • Socratic dialogues could do with some tidying and clarification. See the talk page for one suggested change.
  • Problem of universals: The introductory definition is (perhaps) fixed. But, the article is poor. Check out the German version.
  • Teleology: the article is shallow and inconsistent.
  • Existentialism: the quality of this article varies wildly and is in desperate need of expert attention.
  • Analytic philosophy This is a very major topic, but still has several sections which are stubs, and several topics which are not covered.
  • Lifeworld A philosophical concept that seems to have fallen exclusively into the hands of the sociologists. Could use some attention; it's a major and complex issue in phenomenology.
  • Perception Needs the attention of philosophically minded Wikipedians. This is only the start of an overhaul of perception and related articles.

Wikicode Looks like... Parameters
(date= allowable unless noted)
Categories Purpose
{{ambiguous}} [ambiguous] All pages needing cleanup Ambiguous statements.
{{ambiguous link}}, {{dn}} [disambiguation needed] Articles with links needing disambiguation For links leading to disambiguation pages that the placer can not resolve as they can not determine which is the correct article.
{{anachronism-inline}} [anachronism]   The statement is incongruous with the given time period.
{{citequote}} [This quote needs a citation] Articles with unsourced quotes Quotations w/o a citation. Only use when you consider the statement "undoubtful"; else use something like {{verify source}} or remove the text altogether.
{{clarifyme}}, {{huh}}, {{what}} [clarification needed] pre-text=: superscript text right before the word "clarify"
post-text=: as above, only after.
Wikipedia articles needing clarification Text that is ambiguous or can't be understood but does not appear to be implausible.
{{cnote}}
{{cref}}
(can't be displayed here...) Cnote: note name, note text.
Cref: note name.
Adds a Context note. There are a few popular uses:
1. To add explanatory footnotes, reserving all non-context notes for referencing purposes.
2. To add a mini footnotes bit to a section.
3. To add notes to your section on a talk page.
cnote adds the note itself; cref adds the superscript link in the text.
See decent examples of explanatory at the end of an article and section notes.
{{context needed}} [needs context] tooltip text Additional information is needed to prove notability/relevance or to explain jargon.
{{deadlink}}, {{404}} [dead link] url=: link to the wayback machine version All articles with dead external links
{{definition}} [when defined as?] Display message on rollover Place a definition inline.
{{disputed-inline}} [disputeddiscuss] Articles with disputed statements Use this when a specific statement is currently being disputed. Contrast with dubious below.
Note: always post on the talk page when using this template.
{{dubious}} [dubiousdiscuss] Section on talk page Articles with disputed statements Use this when you doubt the validity of a piece of text but all of the following are true:
1. it is not (yet) under active dispute
2. it does have a source (else use fact)
3. the source is generally reliable (else use verify)
{{episode}} [episode needed] Articles with unsourced statements Request a citation for the specific TV episode this fact came from. Only use when you think it could be correct, just uncited; otherwise, move text to talk page.
{{fact}} [citation needed] Articles with unsourced statements
{{failed verification}}, {{fv}} [failed verification] Articles with unsourced statements The source does not support the material.
{{cn}} [citation needed] Use when a recent source has been provided but the article would be better supported with a source that dates back to the specific time or that specifies the historical context. See page for more.
{{issue}} [volume & issue needed] Comics articles needing issue citations Request a citation for the specific issue of a comic book. Only use when you think it could be correct.
{{list fact}} {{list fact}} Articles with unsourced statements List items that may not really belong there. "Request for other editors to find reputable sources for warranting the inclusion of this member in the list."
{{lopsided}} [unbalanced opinion?] Biased...
{{nonspecific}} [not specific enough to verify] Category:Wikipedia articles needing factual verification This is possibly true, but no source can be provided because the statement is too general.
{{old fact}} [needs update] subst...   Use when the statement was once true but is no longer applicable.
We actually want to "subst:" this one!
{{or}}, {{or?}} [original research?]   Articles that may contain original research NOT the same as {{OR}}!! That will add a banner! To avoid confusion, use the question mark.
{{POV-assertion}} [neutrality is disputed] talk page section Place after a fact or "posit" that may be subjective.
{{POV-statement}} [neutrality is disputed] talk page section Indicates that the specific statement may be biased.
{{page number}}, {{pn}} [page needed]   Wikipedia articles needing page number citations Use when source is provided but the specific pages are not.
{{quantify}} [quantify]   Articles with unsourced statements Sort of like {{who?}}. It is used when a vague number—several, few, certain, many, most—is used.
{{request quote}} [need quotation to verify]   Wikipedia articles needing factual verification Use when you think that the editor's interpretation of the source, but not the source itself, is inaccurate. Best used when you can't access the source.
{{rp}} : 302–305  page number(s) Use when (and only when) a specific source is used numerous times with multiple page references; this way, the reference section will not be cluttered with the same source over and over just to show that a different page was used! Place this right after the <ref name=/> (i.e., when the citation has been provided elsewhere and you're just using the name) or </ref> (end of the citation) tags.
{{specify}} [specify]   Likely true but needs specificity.
{{syn}} [improper synthesis?]   Articles that may contain original research Use when several valid sources are used by an editor to come to an erroneous conclusion.
{{TBD}} [to be determined]   Category:Wikipedia articles containing placeholders Use when an event will definitely occur (and there is a source confirming this inevitability) but the date has not yet been set.
Example: someone is charged, released on bail, and told they will have to appear before the court for conviction, but no date has been set.
{{timefact}} [chronology citation needed]   Use when there is a modern citation provided but the material would be better supported with a source dating back to the time itself.
{{update after}} [needs update] year
month #
day
Custom category: the name of a category (without Category:) that the article should also be placed in.
COMMENT=: this comment won't be visible on the article but will explain the tag to editors.
Wikipedia articles in need of updating Use this when a statement is currently relevant but will need updating after a specific date. Before the date, nothing will be shown in the article; on the day of, the tag will appear and the article will be added to the categories.
{{updateneed}} [needs update]   Use when the material is now out-of-date but not necessarily obsolete...
{{verify credibility}}, {{vc}} [unreliable source?]   Articles with unsourced statements A source if provided but not necessarily credible/valid.
{{weasel-inline}}, {{WW}} [weasel words]   Articles with weasel words A "weasel word" is used only once or twice in the section; since only a few weasel words are there, the banner {{weasel}} is not warranted.
{{when}} [when?]   The timeframe of the relevant event is vague—recently, any season name, earlier, later, mid-, once—but is provided.
{{where}} [where?] talk=: use to subst the talk page section Vague or ambiguous geographic scope Best used when some statements are systemically biased but the banner is not warranted.
{{who}} [who?]   Articles with specifically-marked weasel-worded phrases Use when a group of people is specified, e.g., "scientists", "people", "many", "some".
{{year}} [year needed]   Use when a year could actually be nailed down...
