Hi! My name is Gerald Waldo Luis (/ˈdʒærəld wɒl.dəʊ lɪs/; Indonesian pronunciation: [ge'rald wal'do lu'wis]); but you can call me Gerald or simply GWL. You can find me online under the aliases gerald.90x or gerald-90x.[a] My main interests are aviation, films, and... a lot honestly, it's hard to squeeze it in a page. My editing activities frequent more towards film, Indonesia, aviation, as well as anything I'm in the mood for. I have language proficiencies in English (duh), Indonesian, Hokkien, and a tad Mandarin. Anything more to say? I have more on my infobox... None anymore? Aight, next up.

I started editing during the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in my country, despite creating this account in 2018. I've been doing lots of good articles and featured lists, and am on the way for a featured article. I first started with several GANs and a shit ton of GAN reviews. My main editing belief is that when doing so, you are must be aware of what you do. You are editing a website wherein thousands of people (or even millions) visit to receive accurate information. That being said, you are a volunteer! There is no deadline, and Wikipedia shouldn't have one! We will never be the sum of all human knowledge, and that's what makes Wikipedia the awesome project it still resists till now!

Etymology

Gerald is Germanic, Waldo is English, and Luis is Chinese (Indonesian-ized from Lei). Guess that's why my more-spoken language is English even though I'm Indonesian and am more experienced in Indonesian. I'm always told that the Brits are jerks.[FBDB] I'm not one, folks. But if I act like a jerk, just know that my name's British.

On PR, CC, and AD

Something that I look forward to discussing with other Wikipedians (or Wikimedians!) is, first, the lack of attention towards peer reviews. Ironically, they are the platform everyone recommends for those trying to make an article to FA, and yet when someone puts an article on peer review, it mostly gets lost. An exception to this would be those in very communist WikiProjects like WPVG or Military history, or if an informal QPQ is made in GANs or FACs, of which those seeking peer review don't really think about, thinking that if it's so highly recommended, it gets the same traction as a FAC. We should put a lot of focus into peer reviews since they could affect the retention of valuable or potentially valuable editors, and finding more ways for new or frequent PR nominators to gain reviewers.

Another problem I see is with accessibility. First, closed captions or subtitles for the deaf and hard-of-hearing. Although MediaWiki does provide the option to make TimedTexts, very little scrutiny was placed on the effectiveness of individual CCs. In other platforms like Netflix, specific guidelines were made on how to write CCs and time them to allow for readability for those using them. The most common examples are when to provide sound descriptors or how many characters per second is the minimum. There are many subtitles here that just don't help! With this in mind, I wish there is a guideline specific for WM projects on how to write CCs, or even just subtitles in general.

At last, there is audio descriptions. MediaWiki uses JS video player, which allows for multiple audio tracks in a video, and yet there is no option on WM projects? This is a very big part of accessibility we're missing; with CCs and alt texts being a must in FACs, ADs must be allowed too so that every readers' needs are met in order to allow anyone who wants to read Wikipedia, to be able to.

  • WP is not for your essays. Wikipedia is a mashup, not an undebatable reliable source for you to cite on your essays! Please, folks! Wikipedia can be a helper for your studies, but not a sole source.[2][3] You see those numbers? Click it, that's what we want you to use! If a statement you want to use is from The New York Times, instead of writing "According to Wikipedia...," write "According to The New York Times...." Do not even mention us! We are like your ghost writers; we help you, just don't say anything. Shhhh!
  • Vandals can change. Yes, vandals can change, you intolerant devils. Why do rehabs exist for druggers if otherwise?[4]
 
These platys are mating. They can do so because they know exactly what they're doing with their eyes. That's what VisualEditor is for some.
  • Keep VisualEditor. I use it, and apparently, that's something I'm allowed to say. Jokes aside, though,, VisualEditor is literally what made me stay on Wikipedia. Its facility allowed me to just be a salt and edit, which everyone should. It's not as if I don't learn the markup and that I don't use the source editor. I use them, and I know I have to, and I know that if I am not willing to learn it, it symbolizes how selfish and lazy I am in doing the things I'm interested in. It's just that I'm grateful there is a convenience. Wikipedia shouldn't be something only programmers can do, and it must never be. And by the way, just because someone loves something, doesn't mean they're a nerd. I hate saying tech nerd.
  • Don't do overkill. Because it is not good for the eyes,[5][5][5][5][5][5][5] and at times vague,[5][5][5] because, I[5] mean, one source's good,[5][5][5][5][5][5][5][5][5][5][5][5][5][5] why do you need 15[5] more?[5][5][5][5][5][5][5][5][5][5]
  • Don't act stiff. Have some fun. Editing Wikipedia should be something fun and valuable. Don't be too focused on the project but with no interaction and love towards the fellow editors you collaborate with. If something bothers you whilst editing, vent about it to an editor that is willing to hear it (I am one of them, of course). Lack of place to vent is the main cause of the editor crisis. A lot of things are flawed here; if you have one please speak out!

As I AWB through COVID-19 articles, I notice very few {{orphan}} and {{underlinked}} tags going up. Having articles that link to each other well may seem minor, hence my choice of barnstar, but I've noticed that having articles that are well-linked to each other tends to increase the quality of said articles. This particular correlation means that well-linked articles are a bigger deal than people sometimes think.
