Angelia Joiner

edit

A February 23, 2008 episode of ExoPolitics Radio focuses a great deal on the Angelia Joiner aspect and information retold there by ufologist and director of the Exopolitics Institute Michael Salla clearly contradicts the brief mention of her role in this story currently presented by this Wikipedia article. According to Salla Joiner had offered her resignation on February 1 due to pressure from the newspaper that she limit herself to covering local news. She then filed two more stories related the the UFO sightings. One was about the harassment of one of the witnesses, Ricky Sorrel, which appeared in the paper on February 3rd and 4th. She also wrote about the Air Force backtracking having first stated there were no military jets in the area, then several weeks later admitting they did actually have jets there, as witnesses to the UFO sighting had alleged all along. Then on February 7 Joiner was summarily dismissed. At that time she had been working there for a year and a half. Also the previous episode of the radio show details some of Joiner's predicament. __meco (talk) 16:25, 17 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

This article and related talk is credulous regarding UFO conspiracy theories in general and the supposed oppression of Angelina Joiner in particular. She was a briefly employed "staff writer" (aka lowest-ranked junior reporter) recognized for her "feature writing" (aka puff-piece human-interest stories) at the 5,000-circulation small-town paper. Her publicly disclosed resume has a 10-year gap between getting her teaching degree (at a local state college not ranked by U.S. News and World Report) and writing for the paper. Her next career move was to become a minor star in the UFO conspiracy theory fringe movement. Her reporting played no role in the Air Force's acknowledgement that there were flights that night; that information was gained by well-known astronomer and retired Air Force pilot James McGaha, who accepts the Air Force's evidence that the lights were training flares. Her reporting also played no role in the claimed radar data, which was promoted by a fringe UFO group in a report that was quickly debunked by McGaha as blatantly unscientific. The talk above laughably complains that she resigned rather than "limit herself to covering local news," which obviously was the definition of her job at a small-town community paper. Likewise, a quick Google shows that the Ricky Sorrel she latched onto is an obvious loon who claims to see UFOs all the time. In short, this looks little like a serious investigative journalist having her hard-hitting reporting suppressed. It looks much more like someone who was barely worthy of the term "journalist" in the first place being canned for becoming a budding crank. This article should present fact-based balance, not Joiner's PR hype and faux martyrdom.71.234.44.10 (talk) 08:32, 20 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Varsity Blues (film)

edit

The article Varsity Blues (film) claims that people "believe" the film is based on Stephenville High School, and that as a result the town's cinemas refused to play the movie. Is this actually true, and if so can anyone find a reliable source? -- Finlay McWalter··–·Talk 20:26, 20 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

MUFON report

I removed this by Glen Shulze and Robert Powell of MUFON as a non-WP:FRIND source. I was disappointed to see Wikinews devotes an entire page to it [1]]. - LuckyLouie (talk) 03:52, 8 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
