Proposed merger of RAINN and RAINN Day 2009

edit
  • DISFAVOR - My expectation (particularly with the change in the party in power in the U.S.) is that these two articles will be expanding soon. Over 1 in 6 American women suffer forcible rape, and I don't think the Democrats will see that as tolerable (especially since addressing it will make them look tougher on violent crime). Also, one article is about an organization (of over 1100 rape crisis centers) while the other is about an annual event (with over a million participants) - both seem worthy of articles (as long as sources can be found). Finally, RAINN itself hasn't had a chance to weigh in - I just e-mailed them that they were in Wikipedia two days ago, and just created the RAINN Day 2009 article about two hours ago. I submit that both are more note-worthy than Keith Mason (rugby league). Simesa (talk) 02:04, 23 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Note: I see that the editor who proposed the merger also removed the entry for RAINN Day 2009 from the article for 2009 as "non-notable". With a million+ participants? I question this deletion.
After rest and reflection, I am letting the importance and urgency of this topic (rape in the U.S.) color my editing (my new bride allows me to say that she is a rape survivor and former rape crisis counselor, and the experiences she has in a limited fashion related are very worriful). I agree that RAINN Day would be better (partly since this is a campus-specific event, as opposed to most of RAINN's activities). I didn't know there was a 2009 in the U.S., and I apologize - I've been in Wikipedia for several years now, but only sporadically. I also should have known about the Wikipedia policy, and will find it (I had just created a redirect earlier today for "list of Wikipedia policies" to guide folks to them) (I skimmed "Ownership of Articles" and don't see the policy there, but will keep looking). Again, I apologize for becoming overwrought - I'm pursuing several avenues relevant to this topic, and let myself get caught up in a crusade-like attitude. I moved RAINN Day 2009 to RAINN Day, realizing that this by itself does not end the Merge discussion. Simesa (talk) 09:01, 23 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Page has been merged, there was minimal content to begin with (not even a description of what RAINN day was). Now it's a section in this page. WLU (t) (c) Wikipedia's rules:simple/complex 03:35, 21 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Founders of Rain

edit

Can someone help me with this, I'm looking for a verifiable source on the founders of RAINN and its starting years so that I may expand this article.Killemall22 (talk) 19:34, 6 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hey. I'm also looking to expand this article - it's awful that it's so short. I'm going to go looking for some sources to add, because I think there's probably a lot to say. AnEmptyCageGirl (talk) 17:03, 7 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
I wrote down who the founders were. According to RAINN's own website it was Scott Berkowitz and according to another website it was him and Tori Amos. Various online sources for Tori Amos as well as TV interviews and press releases have pointed at Tori Amos being the founder of RAINN. Sixthcrusifix (talk) 00:21, 14 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Here are some sources I found about RAINN in general.

Yale Daily News

USA Today

Daily Orange

Fraternity Raises Money

ABC

I've written to RAINN twice but received no response. Simesa (talk) 07:55, 7 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hotline phone number in article?

edit

I put the hotline phone number in the article, but it was removed (without a cite to a policy). What is our policy? Should the number be in the article (I feel it's notable)? Note that Rape hotline redirects here. Simesa (talk) 07:55, 7 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

There's been no discussion of this in 6 days, so I'm going to put the hotline number back in. If someone can find a Wikipedia policy against it being in here or explain to me why it's non-notable, I'll take it out myself. Simesa (talk) 13:25, 13 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
Unless you are going to be creating an article about the phone number, it's not notable. I can't find any other articles that include telephone contact information about the organization. It's useless and irrelevant for individuals outside of the United States. Further, it's accessible on their website. Wikipedia is not a miscelaneous collection of information. If people are trying to get in touch with RAINN, they should go the extra step and click on the website link. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a phone book. I agree and have removed the number. Wikipedia is not a directory. We already have the official web link, which readers can use if they want. If someone really needs the number, they would probably use google and go straight to the website rather than an encyclopedia article.--BelovedFreak 17:20, 17 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Mick Foley needs to be mentioned here

edit

i don't know why there's no mentions of Mick Foley on this this page, the legendary Hardcore pro wrestler has helped RAINN out and has become the first male spokesperson for RAINN and has even been on ABC News talking about RAINN. will someone please mention Mick on this page. this coming from a long time Wrestling fan and a fan of Mick himself.--Boutitbenza 69 9 (talk) 04:54, 28 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

If you have a reliable source for this, feel free to add the information. --BelovedFreak 17:17, 28 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Terms of the offer

edit

Foley offered to mow anyone's lawn who donated up to a certain amount...

Are you sure you don't mean 'donated beyond a certain amount'? Valetude (talk) 20:13, 5 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

More early history needed?

edit

The 'History' of RAINN in this article seems to skip much of the period from 1994 to 2014. Yet I seem to remember it being a somewhat influential organization. RoslinTollcross (talk) 20:55, 9 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

Neither URL nor Hotline Phone Number???

edit

I see that back in 2010-2011 there was a discussion about not putting in the Hotline number because the website link was already included. But now NEITHER is included, not even in the References.

This is in stark contrast to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_suicide_crisis_lines which is extensive and has both numbers and websites for many U.S. entries. (In Talk for that topic, see "RfC on List of suicide crisis lines, Not a directory, WP:LSC and Ignore all rules".)

I stand corrected -- the official website is at the very bottom of the article. 2601:80:C67F:FB70:B3D8:9AA9:E844:962 (talk) 17:29, 2 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
