Origin of Name

edit

Why is it called "Madison"? Is there a particular town/county/region it is named after? -- 19:56, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

I think it was named for occurrences along the Madison River, Montana, but it will take some work to verify that. Thanks for the question. Cheers Geologyguy (talk) 21:29, 21 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
I've added what I could find. Apparently when the name was first used in 1893, there was no specific indication of the basis for the name, but Peale was working in the Three Forks area then, so I think the apocryphal suggestion that it is based on the Madison River is pretty reasonable.
