Another good reference

edit

I would suggest adding a reference from the movie "Stan Helsing," as an example of the word MILF being used in the media. The incident occurs in the car scene of the movie when Stan mentions the girl in the car next to them is a "MILF ALERT." -James Pandora Adams —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.176.154.190 (talk) 22:06, 27 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Edit request from 71.195.40.159, 3 March 2011

edit

{{edit semi-protected}} The page defined MILF as an attractive woman 30-50 years of age. I request that an addition to the definition is that the woman in question also must have born at least one child. The standing definition without this addition simply defines a "Cougar", not a MILF. 71.195.40.159 (talk) 01:12, 3 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

  • Declined. This has been debated and the consensus was that being a mother is not a requirement for the MILF label, A cougar is an older woman who has sex with younger men; the terms are not interchangeable. Having children is not a requirement of a MILF as the term refers simply to age. The example given "Pamela Anderson" is a point in case; Anderson does not have any children. Some sources

edit

This book is almost entirely about the MF curse word, but it does have an entire chapter about MILFs. This book also has a chapter on it. This one also has some good info. That should be enough to expand the article quite a bit. SilverserenC 01:05, 24 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Consider a merge with MILF pornography, which is actually better sourced already. Delicious carbuncle (talk) 02:46, 24 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
That doesn't make much sense. Pornography about MILFs should be a sub-section in this article. If you're going to merge, then you should merge upwards, not downwards in terms of topic width. Though I don't think we should be merging at all. This article is about the use of the term colloquially and in the social sense. Pornography is a rather minute sub-section to that, really. SilverserenC 03:25, 24 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
I agree that merging MILF pornography into this article is the only sensible way to combine the two articles. Delicious carbuncle (talk) 11:02, 24 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
I agree with merging MILF pornography and Cougar (slang) into this article. That's what we (lusophon community) did in the portuguese version of this article. Maddox (talk) 15:33, 24 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
Whilst a woman can simultaneously be a cougar and a MILF (e.g. Demi Moore, who is attractive and has a much younger husband), the two terms are not interchangeable; hence one should not redirect to the other. Attractiveness is a prerequisite to being a MILF, but looks are irrelevant as to whether or not a woman can be categorised as a cougar. Age disparity is a necessary part of being a cougar, hence Sarah Palin is often referred to as a MILF, but never as a cougar, because she and her husband were born in the same year and there is no suggestion of her being sexually involved with or interested in younger men. 109.249.200.162 (talk) 17:25, 5 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Agree that MILF pornography should be merged into this article. Let's leave cougar as it is, unlike the Portuguese version. Binksternet (talk) 18:10, 5 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Age span

edit

This has been changed several times and now says 25-50. How many examples are there of twentysomethings being considered MILFs? 89.194.48.193 (talk) 21:45, 3 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hanging out with colleagues at work, I have sometimes heard MILF used to describe a hot mother in her late teens. In the reliable sources, MILFs include women in their 20s in porn more often than in popular street usage where it is 30s (or late 20s) up to 40s or 50s. Here are some sources regarding age:
Hope that helps. Binksternet (talk) 22:48, 3 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
The term was popularised by American Pie, in which Jennifer Coolidge's character was referred to as a MILF by some of her elder son's classmates. Coolidge was 35 at the time, but looked about 40. It seems therefore that the age disparity between the describer and the object of his attraction is part of the definition. Has the term morphed in definition during the past 12 years to such an extent that a 30 year old man can refer to a 30 year old woman as a MILF? If so, how did this change in the parameters of the definition occur? If it is the case, it appears to have changed in meaning to such an extent that its 1999 meaning has been supplanted. Are there any popular mass media uses of the acronym that have lead to the use of the term being changed from its previous meaning? Does anyone have any sources on that? 109.249.200.162 (talk) 17:25, 5 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
I linked to the best sources I could find, which are not all that good. I don't think the definitive study has been published on the MILF concept. Binksternet (talk) 17:48, 5 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
As far as i've seen, it really is only a term applied to women with a child. Even if the sources above say she just needs to be of child-rearing age, it generally requires the presence of a child. However, this becomes a bit wonky the older you get and, once you get into the 40s, the child doesn't seem to be necessary for being called a MILF. That's just my observation on the subject. SilverserenC 21:07, 20 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Suggest change to: "Ages range from as low as the mid-twenties (exclusively from a teenage male perspective) to forties (general usage) or 50s. The term was initially used only to describe the sex appeal of a significantly older woman to a young male speaker, though usage has since broadened to include emphasis on a male's surprise over being attracted to a mother (rather than the age difference), as well as friendly joking praise of a mother's striking looks in a clearly non-sexual manner. However, note that young teenage mothers, older grandmotherly ladies, or women noticeably younger than the speaker are never referred to as MILFs, regardless of sexual attraction and maternity status." 208.127.80.210 (talk) 05:32, 25 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
What are your sources for this change? Where do you see something about an occasional "clearly non-sexual" connotation? Where do you see something about "women noticeably younger than the speaker" not being included? Where do you see that the term initially came from the young male perspective? Move to MILF or disambiguate

edit

Currently, MILF redirects here. I propose that either MILF should be made a disambiguation page between this article and Moro Islamic Liberation Front, or this article should be moved to MILF entirely (avoiding the need for a (slang) tag for what is essentially the "main" article for the phrase "MILF"). --NetRolller 3D 20:46, 20 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

While I would personally argue that MILF (slang) is the more common term, i'm not sure if that's true or not in certain places and I am also hesitant to be offensive. I would think a disambiguation page would be for the best. SilverserenC 21:04, 20 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
A quick news search on google confirms that news sources use MILF for the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, so perhaps a disambiguation is called for, but having only 2 targets makes it fall below the threshold for disambiguation pages. Jarkeld (talk) 21:10, 20 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

“CHILF.” This is a variant of the more well-known term “MILF,” popularized by the teen sex comedy “American Pie.” A “MILF” is an attractive older woman, a so-called “Mom I’d Like to F—.” Thus, a “CHILF” is a “Child I’d Like to F—.” RafikiSykes (talk) 19:57, 16 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

The article claims the expression is "common in English" -- but there is no support given for this claim. A check of BYU's COCA yields 12 occurrences (19 of the 31 total hits refer to a Philippine guerrilla organization). I would say this is not a level that we should call common. It is less than that for "ludicrous" (1433) and even than that of "dreadnaught" (37). So I am asking that it be removed. 76.126.195.34 (talk) 19:09, 14 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Similar terms, such as SMILF and TILF

edit

I would like to point to the TV show SMILF. Its title means "Single Mother I'd Like to Fuck", which is of course a reference to the term MILF. I think a mention of this should be added to the "Similar terms" section. There's also the abbreviation "TILF" ("Teacher I'd Like to Fuck"), which would also fit in the "Similar terms" section. 87.58.47.170 (talk) 01:37, 14 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

SMILF is rarely used other than in reference to the little-known TV show. TILF is rarely used at all. Jim Michael (talk) 11:27, 19 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
I guess the popular TV show SMILF should be mentioned under 'In Popular Culture' since it is fairly related to the term MILF, even has it in its title with added S(ingle) with the rest of the acronym signifying exactly what this term signifies.23.91.184.82 (talk) 06:08, 4 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

Demarcations

edit

The minimum age needs to be 40 to qualify, and there doesn't really need to be an upper age. I think MILF suggests the fantasy of the unattainable, respectable home-maker, and should be kept for that. 'Cougar' can then be identified with the predatory older woman, however promiscuous, and not necessarily married with children. Valetude (talk) 17:40, 11 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
