Khrushchev "death" story
editthis page does not include the fake story announcing the "death" of Khrushchev, which was widely broadcast in the 60s (apparently when a wire-service man overlooked the notation "Can you confirm this?" I found the page while looking for particulars. Will Linden —Preceding unsigned comment added by Wllinden (talk • contribs) 17:29, 2 May 2011 (UTC)
Phil Collins
editI believe the article should include a false report of Phil Collins' death from Argentina. Mario Pergolini started it back in 1992 as a joke to see how many news channels and newspapers would buy it. Could somebody please look into it? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 186.130.185.30 (talk) 22:49, 18 June 2011 (UTC)
Article title does not reflect content
editAccording to the lead section, the list is not actually limited to cases of true "premature obituaries". Either (1) it should be so limited or else (2) the title should be changed to reflect the article content: something like "List of people wrongly believed dead".
Option 1 would produce clear criteria for who belongs on the list, but the application of these criteria would remove some cases that I think are notable. I therefore would prefer option 2. --98.158.139.69 (talk) 16:19, 13 May 2012 (UTC)
vandalism
editDoes Wikpiedia vandalism constitute a "premature obituary" for the purposes of this list? I would think not, but I want to get others' input re: this addition. — fourthords | =Λ= | 15:44, 18 April 2014 (UTC)
- I don't think vandalism to a Wikipedia biography counts as an obituary. If a major news outlet picks up on the edit and mistakenly reports a death only then could it be considered notable. -- Hazhk Talk to me 01:34, 22 April 2014 (UTC)
Premature obituaries in fiction
editI added a section to the article on premature obituaries in fiction. I'm interested in hearing about whether or not other users believe this to be a constructive addition. 68.192.172.153 (talk) 22:58, 25 April 2014 (UTC)
- If there're premature obituaries in fiction that're the subject of reliable, third party sources, I'd say such a section could have potential. — fourthords | =Λ= | 14:32, 26 April 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks for weighing in, but I'm not sure what you mean by "third party sources". If we're citing examples from works of fiction (literature, film, TV, etc.), wouldn't the source be the work of fiction itself? --68.192.172.153 (talk) 17:48, 26 April 2014 (UTC)
- Right; in articles dealing with fiction the work itself is the source (this is why you don't have to cite "Plot" sections of articles). I'm just saying we should keep this particular article founded in what actually garnered third-party attention. Otherwise you're going to have an WP:IPC (and Facebook/Wikipedia) bloat sooner or later. — fourthords | =Λ= | 19:57, 26 April 2014 (UTC)

Carl Kasell
editCarl Kasell has been on my watchlist for quite some time. The article has mentioned since last year that Radio World sent an e-mail to its subscribers announcing Kasell's death, when in fact they should have been announcing his upcoming departure from his duties as the booth announcer for Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me!. The reason I'm mentioning it here is that I'm pretty sure the statement was never properly sourced, plus it's worded in the article so as to imply that the two actions (the retirement announcement and the subsequent e-mail) were completely unconnected occurrences. I've never paid any attention to Radio World, so I dunno how easy it would be to dig around and see if this can be properly sourced. Actor Patrick MacNee, known for his role Steed in The Avengers, died, according to the media in 1982 when his theater colleague Patrick Magee died. He did not mind, and called his deceased colleague a gifted actor. MacNee died June 2015. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 62.163.196.240 (talk) 20:26, 19 July 2015 (UTC)

Inclusion criteria
editI propose trimming this article, to only the entries that meet the criteria below:
- have been covered by major news sources. This is intentionally vague, but generally if it was an internet hoax that no news sources notable enough for a Wikipedia article picked up on, than it is not notable. Similarly, If a very large news source (like The New York Times, Reuters or the Associated Press) pick up on it, it undeniably merits an entry. This would apply to premature obituaries on people that are not notable enough for an article. See Paul Blaise, who was covered by CNN, which would remain.
- Is notable enough for a Wikipedia article (either on their own, or as a result of the hoax). This criteria defers to C1, for people who received large coverage without having an article. See Paul Blaise, who was covered by CNN, which would remain. Conversely, an entry like Adam Buckley, which was only covered by local publications, would be removed.
Interested in thoughts on the matter. I have gone ahead and boldly removed several of the worst offending internet hoaxes. I'd particularly appreciate input on entries that are in lists of Top 10 Bizarre Premature Obituaries etc. I'd lean towards dis-including them, Wikipedia should not be a list of trivia. Eddie891 Talk Work 13:19, 24 February 2019 (UTC)
I'd also propose changing the name to Premature obituary or Premature obituaries, as the 'list' in the title is, I feel, unnecessary (or expanding a separate article only about premature obituaries.- Bfinn, JMyrleFuller, Evking22, Fourthords and others, let me know what you all think... - My edits made here all used Snopes as a source. Has that been ruled out as a reliable source? Evking22 (talk) 15:43, 24 February 2019 (UTC)
- Evking22, No it's reliable, but Snopes is not an indication of anything more than a death hoax happening. I could post on twitter "RIP Barack Obama", and then ask snopes "Is Barack Obama really dead?" and if they post saying "no, he's not", that doesn't make it notable for an entry. For instance this is an example of fake news, not a premature obituary -- it's a hoax, not picked up by reputable news sources. Eddie891 Talk Work 17:31, 24 February 2019 (UTC)
- Perhaps the criteria I propose could be modified to include #3 If the notable person in question posted on Twitter or a similar social media site to dispel the rumors, it merits inclusion. Eddie891 Talk Work 17:33, 24 February 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks. To clarify, I take it your two criteria are either-or (i.e. only one need be satisfied). I'm inclined to agree, though have only thought about it briefly (and despite having created & written most of it, I haven't looked at the article for years!) Though I don't particularly think the article should be renamed, as it's mostly not about premature obituaries in general (other than the bullet list of typical types), but a list of specific instances. By the way I have doubts about the 'Premature obituaries in fiction' section, most of which seem to be not about obituaries as such but merely faked deaths. E.g. Romeo & Juliet. If there are almost no proper examples, I suggest cut it altogether. Ben Finn (talk) 15:08, 1 March 2019 (UTC)
- Bfinn, Yeah... we could also split all of the 'hoaxes' out to List of death hoaxes, which redirects here Eddie891 Talk Work 00:29, 2 March 2019 (UTC)

Title
editThe title is a little unclear. Shouldn't it be something more like "List of misreported obituaries" or "List of prematurely reported obituaries"? The title makes it sound like a list of obituaries of people who died young. Qwertyu1002 (talk) 22:10, 13 February 2024 (UTC)
