The rear-gunner in a Sikorsky UH-53 helicopter watches the end of the new Mazar-e-Sharif to Termez, Uzbekistan, railroad stretch into the distance. When completed, the 47-mile long (76 km) line will provide a valuable commercial link between Afghanistan and Uzbekistan across the Amu Darya River via the Afghanistan–Uzbekistan Friendship Bridge.

Workers pose alongside a streamlined German DRG Class 05 locomotive as it steams for the first time in March 1935. The class was the fastest steam locomotive to run in Continental Europe, and briefly held the Land speed record for steam traction. This locomotive, number 05 001, is the only member of the class to be preserved.

An automated ballast cleaner train operated by VolkerRail deposits cleaned ballast back on the track in the Netherlands as two railway maintenance workers ensure that the ballast remains on the track.

This lithograph, originally published in London in 1894, is titled Locomotive Engine, 'The Rocket', 1830. However, despite the title, the locomotive depicted is not in fact Rocket, which was yellow at the time, and of a different external design. The locomotive is actually Stephenson's 1830 locomotive Northumbrian.

Russian 4-6-0 steam locomotive number U127, the official steam locomotive of Vladimir Lenin, was built in 1910 and used to pull passenger trains on the Tashkent Railway. It received its distinctive red livery in 1923, and was withdrawn from service in 1937. The "Red Locomotive," as it came to be known, was preserved and is now on static display at the Museum of the Moscow Railway.

Tokyo subway and commuter lines cross the Kanda River at Ochanomizu Station. The lowest level is the Tokyo Metro Marunouchi Line while trains of JR East's Chūō Rapid Line and Chūō-Sōbu Line stop at the station.

A 1915 postcard shows a four header train with a rear helper locomotive climbing the Denver and Rio Grande Western grade up Soldier Summit in Utah. This same grade is in use today as part of the Central Corridor between Helper and Provo along Amtrak's California Zephyr.

LNER Thompson/Peppercorn Class K1 62005 "Lord of the Isles" pulls an excursion train over Glenfinnan Viaduct in Scotland. The viaduct, which was opened in 1901 by the West Highland Railway, has been used in a number of films and television shows including Monarch of the Glen, Stone of Destiny and three of the Harry Potter films.

The entirety of Union Pacific #18, a gas turbine-electric locomotive (GTEL) that is now preserved at Illinois Railway Museum, may best be seen in a panorama image. This locomotive was one of thirty developed in the mid-1950s as the third generation of Union Pacific GTELs.
