Summary

Description
English: John Stuart Blackie and Robert Halliday Gunning supported this memorial to Jenny Geddes, who, according to tradition, sparked rioting in St Giles' in 1637 by throwing a stool at Dean James Hannay to protest the new Scottish prayer book. This 1885 plaque on the floor between south nave aisles now marks the putative spot of Geddes' action. The inscription is by John Inglis, Lord Glencorse. "Constant oral tradition affirms that near this spot a brave Scotch woman Janet Geddes on the 23 July 1637 struck the first blow in the great struggle for freedom of conscience which after a conflict of half a century ended in the establishment of civil and religious liberty."
