Purpose of use in article (WP:NFCC#8)	Show the visual style of Šalamoun's illustrations used in The Hobbit, as discussed in the cited scholarly analysis in the paragraph above the image. It is the only image associated with that paragraph, so it is not part of a "gallery". The image and the text support each other, so the illustration cannot be called "decorative". The presence of the illustration enables readers from around the world who have not seen the Czech edition of The Hobbit to evaluate for themselves how suitable Šalamoun's style may be for Tolkien's novel, and how far the scholarly remarks are appropriate to the work illustrated.
Not replaceable with free media because (WP:NFCC#1)	Šalamoun's work is in copyright.
Minimal use (WP:NFCC#3)	This is the only example of Šalamoun's work in the article, and the only one of his paintings anywhere on Wikipedia. It is used cropped and reduced in resolution.
Respect for commercial opportunities (WP:NFCC#2)	It seems unlikely given the distance in time and the rather low attention given to Šalamoun's non-cartoon work. In any case the illustration is already on the web at better resolution.
