I'm on extended leave. ==Cryptographic Identity==
These subsections strive to provide verifiable identities for me on Wikipedia, in case someone hacks my Wikipedia account.

The Committed Identity works where I choose a secret phrase that I'm comfortable sharing with an Admin at the time I wish to prove who I am. The presumption is that at the time that I created the Committed Identity hash, I was in control of my Wikipedia account, and that I keep the phrase secret until the time of proving who I am. If you're looking for ideas on what phrase to use for yourself, my suggestion is to go to a library, open a book at random, and select a couple of sentences from the book. (If you're really paranoid, salt the phrase with another phrase or random letters and numbers. <small>If you're mega-paranoid and you are a machine, memorize another hash or a string of random numbers and letters instead of the phrase, but go to the library anyway and look like you're memorizing a phrase from a book just to throw your observers off the scent. Or don't, because the very fact that I suggested this makes it more guessable than acting completely randomly.</small>) Do whatever you need to do to remember the phrase but keep it as safe from discovery by any third party as possible. Remember the exact phrase right down to spelling, punctuation, capitalization and the number of spaces between words and sentences. Take that phrase and get a cryptographic hash of it. Note the hash's algorithm and post the hash and algorithm to your user page.

The signed message works where I create a plain text message (mine starts with "I am..." and ends with "...Win32." I then use my secret GPG/PGP key (which I keep hidden unless I'm using it) to cryptographically sign the message. I then post the message to my user page. My public key (the cryptographic pair to the secret one I used to sign the message) is available from PGP key servers, so to verify that the message was signed by the secret key, you use GPG 1.4.7, retrieve the public key from the key server, and ask GPG to verify the signature. The rough part is really establishing the web of trust that leads you to believe that the person who controls the secret key really is the same person as me. Since I only ever had one friend who signed my key in verification that it truly is me, you'd have to find some way to trust his testimony that it's me. You can find his key information in my public key and start the search through trust webs yourself. Knowing what I know of him, though, I don't know whether he ever went to any public key signing parties. Maybe I should. Heck, maybe I should hold one.

Also in establishing trust, you technically have to trust that the person you're trusting won't be a jackass and compromise my own key's integrity for some stupid reason. I like to think that I have not yet been stupid in that way.

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----

I am Malcolm Gin.
My keyserver Key ID is: 0x2109F19B
My Wikipedia Committment Hash is: 060803C6 22DA50CA B19D70CA 767C6095 EB867589 4DAE861B C6C37999 A0B34659 81FB87D9 6A4C1607 F9FC9D70 FFB7E263 E8F9185B 622D14FB EB14143B 497069C4
This message is ascii-armored and signed with the secret key that is the pair of the public Key ID above with GNU Privacy Guard 1.4.7 running on Win32.

<small>Notes on checking this message:
<ol>
<li>SHA512 is non-standard, so you may need to use GPG to check the signature hash.</li>
<li>Unfortunately, I never really got a lot of signatures for the key, but I'd be willing to exchange key fingerprints with Wikifolks... though it would be interesting to establish trust with someone I never met. Will have to think about that.</li>
<li>If copy-pasting the message from the HTML side of this page doesn't work, try the Edit (wiki source) side and then remove the leading spaces in ALL the lines, including the empty lines (those lines should be carriage-return only).</li>
<li>I checked the MIT key server for my public key, but since it's been there for years it should be in all mirrors.</li>
</ol>

Projects
Among the things that desperately need doing are these:

Tracking the Weird
For those of you who know me from other online communities, one of the aspects of me you know well is that I am and always will be a process-wonk. I was born to it, bred to it. I eat it and drink it, I breathe it. You know that until I was 30, I was convinced that everyone secretly knew that formalized communication along the lines of Processing, Transactional Analysis and Co-Counselling (along with skills such as assertiveness training, active listening and other such things) was really the Right and True Way of communicating, and that everyone would communicate this way if only I could remind them of how valuable and right it was.

Since then I've improved a lot, and can even pass as a non-lesbian feminist therapist at sporting events, bars and other such venues. (this is a joke, people)

Anyhow, Wikipedia is an interesting place. For the first few weeks I was convinced that it was the Land of Contradiction. It has all these policies and formalized guidelines and procedures that looked wonderful and perfect to me (with a bit of work), but when I started getting my fingers dirty and really started to delve into editing and participating in the process, I found out that most of the people here make a lot of things work by following their own particular version of whatever looks/feels right to them at the time, and if pressed, will generally cite Ignore All Rules.

While I'm still not sure whether I should or even have the energy/wherewithal to try to combat this kind of tendency (which I believe should be protected as a fundamental right/policy, but should be used sparingly, not all the goddamned time) by trying to help shape policy, I do know that when I feel like someone's doing it to my detriment, I should probably keep track of it, so that's what this is about, tracking the weird.

Barnstars and other Awards
Barnstars are here not because I'm particularly proud of them but because the Userboxtops don't share vertically very well.
