Kushner was born in a Jewish family in Washington, D.C. and grew up in [[Cleveland, Ohio|Cleveland]], Ohio. She attended [[Bryn Mawr College]] and graduated from [[Barnard College]]. She lives in New York City with her wife and sometime collaborator, [[Delia Sherman]].
