This paper reviews and discusses a typical Phoenician monument in the form of an empty throne kno... more This paper reviews and discusses a typical Phoenician monument in the form of an empty throne known as “Astarte throne”; it denotes a characteristic aniconic cult mainly in the area of Sidon and Tyre on the Phoenician Mainland, but the monument type also occurs in Cyprus, while similar forms and versions of the type are found in southern Aegean. The absence of this form from the Punic world where Astarte cults and seated statues of the deity are well known is also discussed.
