The history of film production in sub-Saharan Africa, and of films by African filmmakers in gener... more The history of film production in sub-Saharan Africa, and of films by African filmmakers in general, must be considered in the context of an acute shortage of technical and financial resources, as well as a lack of viable circuits of distribution and exhibition. These difficulties, in turn, have been compounded by colonial and post-colonial traditions and policies regarding cinema: first, cinema targeted for Africans during the colonial period, where it existed, was integrally linked to administrative, military, religious, or educational objectives; second, post-colonial-either European or African-film policies, and filmmakers' initiatives aimed at ameliorating colonial conditions have not led to an economically viable and stable film industry in the region. A major stumbling block continues to be the bottleneck created by European and American conglomerates who own and operate the lucrative distribution mechanisms for cinema throughout Africa.
