The region of West Hungary surrounding Sopron has experienced large migrant worker inflows from r... more The region of West Hungary surrounding Sopron has experienced large migrant worker inflows from rural Hungary and neighbouring countries into low-skilled jobs in pre-COVID-19 years. This research interviewed workers, labour market intermediaries, employers, and hosts to explore how the fundamental humanity of migrant workers is denied in the labour process. The paper draws on geographical research examining the embodied agency of workers and analyses the literature on dehumanization to highlight the construction of dehumanization narratives in the social relations of migrant recruitment, training, employment, and accommodation. Theoretically, the paper argues that production and reproduction sites require consideration when examining the dehumanization of migrant labour. The empirical part of the paper contributes to the literature by unpacking various dehumanization strategies involving social boundary-making based on nationality, ethnicity, and gender.
Formed from the westernmost territories of Hungary, Burgenland became a part of Austria a hundred... more Formed from the westernmost territories of Hungary, Burgenland became a part of Austria a hundred years ago. The aim of the paper is to answer the question of how Burgenland became integrated into the Austrian society and economy, how its regional inequalities and rural character changed in comparison to the neighbouring Austrian and Hungarian areas, under the influence of Vienna's major role. The analysis is based on the census data of 1910, 1960/61, 2001 and 2011 and on the mapping of different social and economic indicators. Our data revealed that one hundred years ago, the northern, more prosperous area of Western Hungary was an integral part of the rural hinterland of the imperial capital, Vienna, in stark contrast to the region's southern periphery. After World War II, however, a steep west-east gradient emerged in the borderland along the Iron Curtain, while the traditional north-south disparity continued to exist on both sides of the new border. During the political transformation in the early 1990s, and even more after Hungary's EU accession (2004), the former hard border ceased to exist in this region, while Vienna regained its former economic importance and influence. After 1990, the patterns of regional disparities changed rapidly in Hungary, and the western part achieved a leading position within Hungary in every dimension of economic prosperity. In line with this, while the Austrian rural regions in Burgenland and between Vienna and Graz showed remarkable infrastructural progress, Southern Burgenland remained peripheral regarding economic activity.

Elemzem az alföldi éghajlat-vita csúcspontját, a Kaán-Réthly vitát, amelyben nemcsak két különbözô személyiség mutatkozott meg, hanem a környezet-, illetve éghajlatváltozásról vallott eltérô elképzelések is szembe kerültek egymással. Két napilap szemlézésével bemutatom a szélsôséges idôjárás hatását a sajtóra, illetve a közbeszédre, rámutatva a sajtónak a maihoz igen hasonló beállítottságára. Végül felelevenítem a globális klímaváltozási elmélet hazai bevezetésének körülményeit, kiemelve, hogy azt a régi éghajlatingadozási teória egyik képviselôje vetette fel elôször, ám már az új tudósgeneráció vitte véghez, nemzetközi impulzusokból, részben szovjet közvetítés révén.

A kerdes korbejarasanak az egyik modja az, ha kulonboző latasmodokat teszunk egymas melle. Kerdes, hogy sikerul-e egy kerek kepet kialakitani? Ez a megkozelites jellemzi e kotet is, amelynek gerincet kulonboző szakteruletekről erkező, kulonboző korosztalyt kepviselő kutatokkal folytatott beszelgetesek alkotjak. A beszelgetesek egymashoz illeszkedve az eghajlatvaltozas kerdeskorenek kulonboző szeleteit vilagitjak meg, korbejarva a tudomanyos problema jelenet es jovőbeli kerdeseit is. Az interjuk keszitesekor fontos szempont volt annak feltarasa, hogy az eghajlatvaltozas, mint tudomanyos tema milyen szerepet kapott a megkerdezett kutatok egyeni, szakmai eletpalyajaban, ők hogyan vettek reszt e tema tudomanyteruletenek alakitasaban, fejlődeseben, de meg is fordithatnank: az eghajlatvaltozas hogyan formalta az ő karrierjuket, tortenetuket.
This study explores a past climatic controversy dealing with the efforts and influences of the af... more This study explores a past climatic controversy dealing with the efforts and influences of the afforestration and water regulation in the Great Hungarian Plain. This debate had two amplitudes; the first in the mid' 1860s, after a summer drought, and the second in the interwar period of the 20 th century. In the article I investigate the circumstances and present the milestones of the debate, and discuss how the changing historical context transformed the meaning of the clashing ideas during their afterlife. The theory of global climate change rearranged the position of the opposing sides; the idea of permanent climate in human history become history. The context of early socialist Hungary in the 1950s produced a similar situation. We can find also the losers of the controversy during the interwar period on the other side, i.e. the promoters of the afforestration due to climatic effects. The study offers the parallels of the past and present climate debates as conclusions: the faults of scientific communication, the problem of the limits of scientific knowledge and uncertainty, the polarizing effects of the debate as well the extreme weather and the visible scientific and lobby groups in background could be considered.

Taking a biographical approach, two main characters of Hungarian water-environmental history are ... more Taking a biographical approach, two main characters of Hungarian water-environmental history are explored in this study. Before the global warming era, meteorologist Antal Réthly played a major role in the climatic controversy concerning the water regulation and afforestation of the Great Hungarian Plain arguing that these human activities could not change the climate. In turn, water engineer Emil Mosonyi strove to conceptualize and develop the utilization of Hungarian hydropower potentials and remained a supporter of large hydropower projects even after his emigration and return, when the construction of the Danube barrage system catalyzed the Hungarian environmental movement and the political transition in 1989. Their histories help understanding of the limited capacities of science in solving environmental controversies.

Interview with Pál Beluszky JANKÓ FERENC Beluszky Pállal 2003-ban a Korall társadalomtörténeti folyóirat számára készült egy interjú, a kérdező akkor Rácz Lajos volt. Az interjút végigolvasva az olvasó csodálkozhat, hogy mennyi látszólagos véletlen, külső hatás és körülmény határozta meg Beluszky Pál életét. A lakóhely-és a pályaválasztás, az FKI elhagyása vagy az RKK-ba kerülés az FKI-ba való visszatérés helyett. Helytálló ez a sarkítás? Ha a kutatói pályára tekintünk, annak befutásához viszont markáns ambícióra lehetett szükség. Hogyan formálódott Tanár Úr kutatói ambíciója, miképp erősödött meg az az elhatározás, hogy kutatói pályát fusson be? Én úgy tapasztalom, hogy a mai generáció sokkal tudatosabban építi a pályáját, mint tettük azt mi jó ötven évvel ezelőtt. Egyrészt kevésbé van az ember kiszolgáltatva különböző korlátoknak, a lehetőségek is bővültek, és sokkal szerteágazóbbak. A mi korunkban, ha valaki tudományegyetemre iratkozott be, akkor a tanításon kívül nem nagyon volt más lehetősége. Tehát nem is nagyon gondolkodtunk előre, hogy az ember hol helyezkedik el. Másrészt kevés lehetőség adódott a saját elképzelések megvalósítására, úgy, hogy sokkal több volt a véletlen, és kevesebb a tudatos pályaépítés. Az én esetemben ez például azt jelentette, hogy nekem eszem ágában sem volt geográfusnak lenni, még történésznek sem, leginkább valahol az irodalom környékén tudtam elhelyezni magam, az irodalomtörténet, vagy valamelyik irodalomtudomány vidékén. De az akkori felvételi rendszer merevsége volt az, amely végül egyrészt Debrecenbe küldött engem-én az ELTE-re jelentkeztem-másrészt az irodalom szaktól fokozatosan csúsztam át a geográfia irányába. Egy ideig-mint történelem-földrajz szakos hallgató-inkább a történelem keretei között tudtam volna elképzelni a pályámat, s tulajdonképpen a véletlenek juttattak a geográfia területére. A tanulmány célja az éghajlatváltozás példáján vizsgálat tárgyává tenni a tudás létrehozásának, á... more A tanulmány célja az éghajlatváltozás példáján vizsgálat tárgyává tenni a tudás létrehozásának, átalakításának, közzétételének hazai virtuális tereit, feltérképezni, hogy milyen csomópontok, kulcsszereplők vannak a tudástermelési folyamatban. Felvázolható-e az éghajlatváltozásról való tudás webes hálózata, ennek közösségei? Mik a tudásközlők motivációi? Melyek a tudásközlők főbb törekvései, illetve az éghajlatváltozás lokalizálásának gyakorlatai, azaz hogyan lesz helyi tudássá a klímaváltozás az internet segítségével? A vizsgálatok elméleti megalapozásához az internet szerepét a tudás és a tudomány, illetve a tudás és a társadalom viszonyában elemeztem, így érintve az átalakuló olvasás földrajzát, az e-tudomány kialakulását, a tudományok változó episztemikus kultúráját, a demokratizálódás révén formálódó kibővített ellenőrző közösségeket, a tudáshoz való hozzáférhetőség és a szakértőiség kérdését. Az elemzésekhez a Google segítségével végeztem internetes tartalomkeresést, és ennek bázisán az Issue Crawler programmal térképeztem fel a webes témahálózatokat az éghajlatváltozásról. A vizsgálatoknak több tanulsága vehető fontolóra. A klímaváltozás hazánkban ugyan fontos környezeti üggyé vált, azonban a témát tárgyaló honlapok hálózati szervezettsége, valamint linkelési, internetes hivatkozási kultúrája alacsony fokú, s inkább a külföldi (mindenekelőtt az IPCC-Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) tudományos és hírforrások adják az alapját a hazai tudástermelésnek. A hazai tudományos intézmények jobbára kimaradnak az internetes diskurzusból, rejtve maradnak az internetet böngészők szeme elől. Vizsgálatom több példát hozott arra, hogy az éghajlatváltozás globális problémáját hogyan kísérlik meg lokalizálni, hazai viszonyokra adaptálni, így formálva tulajdonképpen virtuális helyi tudást az éghajlatváltozásról.
Biogeosciences and Forestry Biogeosciences and Forestry Seeing, believing, acting: climate change... more Biogeosciences and Forestry Biogeosciences and Forestry Seeing, believing, acting: climate change attitudes and adaptation of Hungarian forest managers Ferenc Jankó (1-2) , Laura Bertalan (2) , Judit Pappné Vancsó (2) , Nikoletta Németh (3) , Mónika Hoschek (4) , Mónika Lakatos (5) , Norbert Móricz (6) Climate change attitudes, perceptions, and adaptation activities of Hungarian forestry managers have been examined in this study through a national questionnaire and interviews. The questionnaire results revealed that respondents are mainly concerned by the decrease in snow-covered days, but differences in opinions can be attributed to geographical location and forest composition. Forest management aimed at climate change adaptation in Hungary is still in the initial phase: only 16% of respondents reported the application of climate change adaptation measures. Many foresters claim legislative constraints frequently hinder their efforts to implement such measures; those who have implemented adaptation measures show an increased concern toward climate change, on average. They have been aware of climate change for a longer time and consider it a serious problem affecting their management activities. The questionnaire results indicate that the adaptations of state forest managers are at about the same level as private foresters. Moreover, a high level of concern combined with nature conservation factors does not hinder adaptation. Nevertheless, interview respondents reported that nature conservation factors are hindrances to adaptation processes.

A klímaváltozás hazánkban ugyan fontos környezeti üggyé vált, azonban a témát tárgyaló honlapok hálózati szervezettsége, valamint linkelési, internetes hivatkozási kultúrája alacsony fokú, s inkább a külföldi (mindenekelőtt az IPCC-Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) tudományos és hírforrások adják az alapját a hazai tudástermelésnek. A hazai tudományos intézmények jobbára kimaradnak az internetes diskurzusból, rejtve maradnak az internetet böngészők szeme elől. Vizsgálatom több példát hozott arra, hogy az éghajlatváltozás globális problémáját hogyan kísérlik meg lokalizálni, hazai viszonyokra adaptálni, így formálva tulajdonképpen virtuális helyi tudást az éghajlatváltozásról.
Biogeosciences and Forestry Biogeosciences and Forestry Seeing, believing, acting: climate change... more Biogeosciences and Forestry Biogeosciences and Forestry Seeing, believing, acting: climate change attitudes and adaptation of Hungarian forest managers Ferenc Jankó (1-2) , Laura Bertalan (2) , Judit Pappné Vancsó (2) , Nikoletta Németh (3) , Mónika Hoschek (4) , Mónika Lakatos (5) , Norbert Móricz (6) Climate change attitudes, perceptions, and adaptation activities of Hungarian forestry managers have been examined in this study through a national questionnaire and interviews. The questionnaire results revealed that respondents are mainly concerned by the decrease in snow-covered days, but differences in opinions can be attributed to geographical location and forest composition. Forest management aimed at climate change adaptation in Hungary is still in the initial phase: only 16% of respondents reported the application of climate change adaptation measures. Many foresters claim legislative constraints frequently hinder their efforts to implement such measures; those who have implemented adaptation measures show an increased concern toward climate change, on average. They have been aware of climate change for a longer time and consider it a serious problem affecting their management activities. The questionnaire results indicate that the adaptations of state forest managers are at about the same level as private foresters. Moreover, a high level of concern combined with nature conservation factors does not hinder adaptation. Nevertheless, interview respondents reported that nature conservation factors are hindrances to adaptation processes.
