Of great concern are the underweight children because of the risk of illness and mortality in them. Being overweight can also have long-lasting adverse effect on development of the child. The purpose of this study was to determine body mass index (BMI) and dental development in normal and underweight children and to carry out a correlative analysis of calculated dental age, chronological age, and BMI in normal and underweight children of age group of 6–13 years of Navi Mumbai, India. Materials and Methods: The sample for the study consisted of 301 participants, that is, 171 boys and 130 girls who were divided into two groups, namely, normal and underweight. Results: When BMI was less than normal, calculated dental age was less and thus the dental development was retarded and vice versa. Conclusion: The following conclusions were drawn from the study: (1) a significant positive correlation was found between chronological age and dental age and (2) along with the chronological age and dental age, the calculated dental age difference must also be taken into consideration.

Where suspected, it is essential for the clinician to accurately obtain history and perform proper clinical evaluation to rule out TMDs in children. This chapter focuses on paediatric temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and its disorders along with various management techniques. It is important that patients in this age group should not be ignored from adequate management for TMDs.

The objective of the study is to identify the prevalence of traumatic dental injuries to permanent anterior teeth among 8-12 years old school children through clinical examination. Traumatic dental injuries often occur in accidents or sports related injuries. They are most common during childhood. Chipped teeth are the most common traumatic dental injuries where dislodged or knocked out teeth are less frequent but more severe injuries. Treatment generally depends on type, location and severity of injury. Children of age 8-12 years were examined and if there are any traumatic dental injuries they are recorded and finally statistics is done to assess the prevalence rate. Since very less attention has been paid to traumatic dental injuries, assessing their prevalence rate have become essential.

In addition, continued dental experience can improve the child's response, indicating desensitization to dental stress. Aims: To evaluate the influence of parental anxiety on children's behavior and understanding children's dental anxiety after sequential dental visits. Materials and Methods: A total of 175 children of age 6–12 years, 98 were boys and 77 were girls, were randomly selected from various schools of Navi Mumbai. Parental dental anxiety was assessed using the Corah's dental anxiety scale (DAS), and child anxiety level was measured using children fear survey schedule-dental subscale (CFSS-DS). Statistical Analysis Used: Pearson's correlation coefficient analysis, ANOVA, and Friedman test. Results: There is a significant positive correlation (P < 0.0001) between DAS scores and CFSS-DS scores at all three dental visits. The mean ± standard deviation, CFSS-DS scores at the first, second, and third dental visits are (34.07 ± 11.97), (31.04 ± 10.94), and (27.26 ± 9.39), respectively, showing the score is more during the first dental visit than the second and third visits. Conclusion: The dental anxiety levels in parents may influence the anxiety levels of children and also all children exhibited an improvement in the levels of dental anxiety from the first dental visit to the subsequent dental visits.

Bite marks are good indicators of abuse as they are rarely accidental. 4 It is a known fact that medical professionals are the first ones to come in contact with children affected by abuse and neglect. Dental professionals especially are the ones who would first notice any signs of CAN, since in maximum cases, the lesions are seen in the head, neck, mouth, and face region. Aim The aim was to assess dental students' perception and knowledge of CAN in a pediatric dental setup. introduction Child abuse and neglect (CAN) is a grave issue our society faces. The physical, psychological, as well as social well-being of a child is of utmost importance. However, it is often overlooked by their primary caregiver. It could be in the form of negligence or even emotional, physical, or sexual abuse. Child abuse and neglect (CAN) is defined by the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act as "any recent act or failure to act on the part of a parent or caregiver that results in death, serious physical or emotional harm, sexual abuse, or exploitation, or an act or failure to act that presents an imminent risk of serious harm." 1 There are five subtypes of CAN-(1) physical abuse: in which a child potentially is physically harmed, such incidents may be single or multiple; (2) child sexual abuse: in which there is some sort of sexual activity where the child isn't aware or cannot comprehend and is unable to give consent; (3) emotional abuse: where in the primary caregiver fails to provide an emotionally supportive environment for the child; (4) neglect: where the caregiver fails to pay attention to or omits the basic emotional, physical, health, and educational needs of the child; and (5) exploitation: where the child is exploited for work or other activities which benefits others such as child trafficking. 2 Child abuse and neglect (CAN) have several short-and long-term effects on the child. These effects include post-traumatic stress disorder, aggression, emotional disturbances, and mental health concerns like anxiety, depression, etc. These effects also affect the child in their adulthood. According to the adverse childhood experiences study, an American research project established a strong relationship between bad experiences in childhood and adulthood physical and mental well-being. 3

Materials and Methods: A total of 7 patients were evaluated and followed for 3-month. The wound was evaluated on 1 st , 3 rd , and 7 th postoperative day for swelling, infection, gaping and pain and at 1 st and 3 rd postoperative month for scar evaluation. The evaluation was based on different superficial facial wound repairs (i.e., low tension) with an average length <3 cm; and if the surgeon subjectively felt that subcuticular sutures were justified to reduce wound tension, then these were used. Isoamyl 2-cyanoacrylate glue was applied over lacerated wound margins after cleaning the wound and holding together for 15 s by means of tissue holding forceps. Statistical Analysis: Statistical analysis was done using Chi-square test after collection of data. Mean and standard error were estimated from the sample. Results: The mean total time taken for skin closure was 1-2.5 min. There was no wound infection in any of the cases; only one case showed wound dehiscence on 3rd postoperative day. The cosmetic was better as there were no suture marks. Conclusion: Isoamyl 2-cyanoacrylate can be considered as excellent "no needle" alternative for closure of selected pediatric lacerations, those that are short, clean and under low tension.

It is a serious and disabling condition that may cause problems in mastication, digestion, speech, appearance, and hygiene. This report describes a case of a 12-year-old girl with inability to open her mouth, diagnosed with unilateral right bony TMJ ankylosis. The surgical approach consisted of gap arthroplasty with interpositional temporalis muscle flap followed by vigorous physiotherapy. The treatment of TMJ ankylosis poses a significant challenge because of technical difficulties and a high incidence of recurrence. Its treatment includes the orthodontist, oral and maxillofacial surgeon, pediatric dentist, and psychologist and physical therapist as part of the healthcare team.

The primary goal of all restorative treatment is to maintain pulp vitality so that normal root development or apexogenesis can occur. If pulpal exposure occurs, then a pulpotomy procedure aims to preserve pulp vitality to allow for normal root development. Historically, calcium hydroxide has been the material of choice for pulpotomy procedures. Recently, an alternative material called mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) has demonstrated the ability to induce hard-tissue formation in pulpal tissue. This article describes the clinical and radiographic outcome of a series of cases involving the use of MTA in pulpotomy, apexogenesis and apexification procedures and root perforations repair.

Thumb and finger sucking habits, or nonnutritive sucking, are considered to be the most prevalent of oral habits. Some parents are concerned by thumb sucking and may even try to restrain the infant or child. In most cases, this is not necessary. Most children stop thumb sucking on their own. When older children continue to suck their thumbs, it could mean they are bored, anxious, or have emotional problems such as depression. This article presents a case report of a child with Hurler's syndrome along with thumb sucking/biting habit. Hurler's syndrome, also known as mucopolysaccharidosis I, is a rare condition inherited as an autosomal-recessive trait. It represents the classical prototype of mucopolysaccharide disorder. A unique appliance to prevent thumb sucking/biting was developed and termed as "RURS' elbow guard," which was successfully used to break thumb sucking of the child with Hurler syndrome. The present report also describes the steps in fabrication of this new habit-breaking appliance, which is also designed to protect the finger from the effects of the sucking habit.

The sugar most commonly associated with dental caries is sucrose, as the microorganisms in the dental plaque have the ability to convert this dietary constituent into various organic acids. Aims and Objectives: This study was conducted to study the effect of the presence of plaque on the salivary clearance of sucrose and to study the effect of the presence of plaque on salivary pH, following sucrose clearance. Materials and Methods: Salivary sucrose determination was done by using the anthrone technique. A Digital MHOS pH meter estimated the salivary pH. Results: Presence of plaque increased the salivary sucrose clearance time and decreased the salivary pH at various time intervals. Conclusions: The microbial etiology of dental caries is the dynamic relationship among the dental plaque microbiota, dietary carbohydrates, saliva and pH lowering, and the cariogenic potential of the dental plaque. Caries occur preferentially in the dentition sites characterized by high exposure to carbohydrate and diminished salivary effect.
