Although recent fascinations with BDSM in popular culture do associate with inclusiveness from liberal perspectives, Margot Weiss in “Mainstreaming Kink: The Politics of BDSM Representation in U.S. Popular Media” takes a critical view of such representations because they only accept BDSM sexuality insofar as it can be normalised by vanilla standards. This appropriation of BDSM imagery in mainstream culture, in my view, does not undermine, but only reinforces Gayle Rubin’s account of Sex Hierarchy (i.e. heterosexual, monogamous and vanilla privileging over non-mainstream sexualities). This paper responds to Weiss’s position, agreeing with her understanding of the widespread representation of BDSM, while emphasising the need to recognise other possibilities. Discussion will focus on two contrasting films, both dealing with encounters between BDSM and vanilla. In Exit to Eden , although BDSM is not demonised, it is...

Bettie Page’s image may be ubiquitous and to an extent embody BDSM in the popular imagination. As an individual, she remains enigmatic, denied a voice and subjected to the projections of others. Drawing on her act of confession in the film, this paper argues that although Bettie Page cannot directly resist the power structure confronting her, the film does not represent her simply as a passive victim. First, this paper will show the difference between Rousseau’s and Foucault’s approaches to stigma and to the imposed sense of abnormality from social conformity and censorship. On this basis, it will discuss how these differences manifest themselves in Bettie Page’s narrative, which develops in relation to the act of confession in both legal and religious senses, and how Bettie Page despite her situation is cap...

This dilemma is directly expressed by Heidegger in ‘A Dialogue on Language between a Japanese and an Inquirer’ where there is a discussion of Kurosawa’s film Rashomon . Although ‘the Inquirer’ initially expresses some sympathy towards Rashomon , ultimately both the interlocutors conclude that it technologically objectified the Japanese World. Heidegger extends this suspicion to film media in general seeing it as objectifying and incompatible with the Japanese World as he understands it, producing westernised consumer products. Such a suspicion might apply to Miyazaki’s medium of animation as much as to Kurosawa’s films. This paper will consider Miyazaki in the context of Heidegger’s dialogue with Japanese tradition and his critique of technology. I will focus on Miyazaki’s Spirite...

It asks whether East Asian thought, particularly philosophical Daoism, can adequately address the problem of modern nihilism as conceived by Heidegger. It aims to clarify the vague prospect: which Heidegger termed the 'new beginning' by showing how East Asian thought offers a distinctive model of the sacred that can antidote modern nihilism. Chapter One grounds the overall thesis by outlining the basic phenomenological principles of Heidegger's thought, particularly his notions of Being (Sein) and world. This basis is extended by Chapter Two which examines the Later Heidegger's notions of earth and Seyn. Chapter Three sets out modern nihilism as it is understood in Heidegger's philosophy. Chapter Four looks at the basic hermeneutical difficulties of Heidegger's dialogue with East Asia. Building on this introduction to Heidegger’s thought, Chapter Five discusses Daoism and Sh...
