Metal medley

From Dragon Quest Wiki

The Metal medley is a recurring monster in the series, first appearing in Dragon Quest IX. It is a Metal slime version of a Slime stack.

Characteristics[edit]

Unlike their squishier cousins, they are only ever encountered directly. They are tougher than the basic Metal slime and (matching their appearance) worth three times as much experience. Metal medleys are known for their ability to cast Kerfrizz, setting an opponent ablaze with a burst of fireballs.

Of curious note, Metal medleys are particularly targeted as prey by the Hunter mechs. If one of these metal-hunting mechanical marauders is nearby, surely its mark can't be far off...

  • Defeating three metal medleys with the Pressure Pointer skill is the objective of Quest #65: Operation Mercury. They're also the first metal monsters that it's reasonable to use for level-grinding; even without the Spear quest in your log, their spawn rate seems to be quite a lot higher than that the basic Metal slimes in the Quarantomb.

Dragon Quest X[edit]

Metal medleys appeared from the beginning of the game, dropping 3,618 experience when defeated (triple that of a normal metal slime). Once again, they are able to cast Kerfrizz and have a high chance of fleeing. In order to discourage players from leveling too quickly, metal medleys only accompany other monsters rather than appearing on the field.

Starting with Version 1.2 of the game, metal medleys can occasionally be encountered on the hidden floors of Magic Labyrinths. Version 2.3 introduced the metal labyrinth invitation ticket, which allows players to visit a special labyrinth populated only by metal slimes. At least three metal medleys can be encountered there, giving players a reliable way to encounter them. In Version 3.0, an item known as the Metal medley ticket would cause a metal medley to appear when used as a tool in battle.

Dragon Quest Rivals[edit]

Metal medley appeared in the 4th card pack, "Tales of Powerful Monsters" as a normal card exclusive for Merchant leaders.

Trivia[edit]

  • A medley is a musical performance where excerpts of several different pieces are strung together as a single piece without breaks, and the word forms a solid alliteration with "metal".
