GENERAL INFORMATION
Foreword
Daniel Industries, Inc. is a recognized leader in the field of flow measurement. The Flow Products Division has
as its goal the development and manufacture of the most accurate and reliable flow measurement equipment in
the industry. From entire packaged meter stations to specific components, the Daniel expertise is there.
Daniel's Gas Turbine Meter is an example of this expertise and leadership position in flow measurement. The
meter is unique in its design. It has fewer moving parts because of its patented electronic design. In
combination with Daniel's totalizing and computing equipment, the gas turbine meter becomes the heart of gas
measurement systems for virtually any situation.

Turbine Meter Parameters
Accuracy is a measure of how close to true or actual flow the instrument indication may be. It is generally
expressed as a percent of true volume for a specific flow range. This is a "worst case" rating. Accuracy at a
particular flow rate may be an order of magnitude better than "rated flow range accuracy."
Resolution is a measure of the smallest increment of total flow that can be individually recognized. High
resolution is generally required only on meters handling the sale of products which must be periodically proved,
or on meters for control purposes. Electro-magnetic turbine meters have an inherently high resolution.
Repeatability is a meter's ability to indicate the same reading each time the same flow conditions exist.
Turbine meters exhibit excellent repeatability and, for many control applications, this parameter is more
important than accuracy or resolution.
Range is the ratio of maximum flow to minimum flow over which the specified accuracy will be maintained.
Accurate Measurement Explained
As the gas flow enters the meter inlet, it is guided through a flow area created by the inside diameter of the
meter and the outside diameter of the flow deflector. The flow deflector or nose cone is used to increase the
velocity of the gas to prepare its entry to the meter rotor. The increase in velocity provides ample rotor driving
force.
After the flowing gas has been accelerated, it flows through the meter rotor. The rotor is designed with a
specific number of blades positioned at a precise angle to the flow stream. The gas impinges on the rotor
blades causing the rotor to rotate. The angular velocity of the rotor is directly proportional to the gas velocity
and consequently to the volumetric flow rate.
Hence, by accurately measuring the rotor rotation, the volumetric flow can be determined.
The Daniel Gas Turbine Meter is furnished with two magnetic pick ups which sense the rotation of the rotor
through accurately positioned magnets in the rotor hub. As the magnet passes the coil it produces a voltage
pulse which represents a discrete unit of volume. The turbine meter output is rated in pulses per unit volume.
Daniel offers two independent, isolated pick ups which can be used with the Daniel local totalizer and/or flow
instrumentation capable of accepting inputs of pressure, temperature, and density transducers for calculations
of corrected flow or mass.

Four Ways of Meter Proving
SPIN TEST
A spin test of the gas turbine meter rotor does not represent absolute proof over the entire range of the meter, but only
an indication of its accuracy in the lower range. A spin test is conducted and recorded on the gas turbine meter
specification sheet by Daniel prior to shipment, but another test is advised before installation. Be sure to record the spin
time of this test for future reference. Conduct the spin test in a relatively draft-free environment or by blocking off back of
inner housing.

These spin down times and their respective calibration curves represent an example of a typical 4" gas turbine meter
and indicate the loss due to friction in bearings. If friction is indicated by unsuitable spin down time, the bearings should
be replaced.
The critical flow prover test method has the advantage of the meter being tested under the same conditions and
configuration that it normally operates.
The critical flow orifice prover is used to test gas turbine meters at operating pressures of 15 psig or more. Flow is
passed through the meter and the orifice, then discharged into the atmosphere.
The critical flow venturi prover also is used to test gas turbine meters at 15 psig or more. The venturi is installed as an
"in-line" device so that gas flows through the meter, through the venturi, then back into the pipeline. There is no loss of
gas due to venting, no high noise levels, and no hazardous conditions. The venturi outlet section is designed to recover
90-95% of the critical pressure loss.
TRANSFER PROVER
Transfer proving consists of meter calibration by means of a transfer or master meter. In transfer proving, the master
meter and the test meter are piped in series. A selected volume of gas is simultaneously passed through both meters,
and their registration is observed. The observations (registrations) are then corrected for any temperature and pressure
differences between the two meters. A percentage error is determined for any flowing conditions by installing the master
meter in the pipeline with the test meter or at atmospheric conditions by installing the test meter in series with the master
meter and utilizing a portable blower to provide the volume through the two meters.
Two devices which can be used as master meters in transfer proving are the gas turbine meter and the orifice meter. Of
the two devices, the master gas turbine meter provides a system that is simple, accurate, repeatable, fast, and requires
less additional instrumentation.
Overrange and Maintenance
OVERRANGE
The gas turbine meter is a velocity (rate) sensing device. Extreme gas velocity encountered during
pressurizing, venting, and purging of meter tube or system can cause severe damage due to sudden and
severe overranging. All such operations should be conducted under controlled conditions in order to maintain
meter accuracy and trouble free service.
NOTE: The Daniel Gas Turbine Meter is designed to accept gradual 25% overranging surges during normal
operation. It can withstand a gradual 100% overranging, but internals will suffer accelerated deterioration.
MAINTENANCE
A maintenance manual is supplied with each Daniel Gas Turbine Meter.
APPLICATIONS
Daniel Gas Turbine Meters are applicable to wide flow ranges, fluctuating flows, and to extend the range of
existing meter stations. This versatility and its accuracy make the Daniel Gas Turbine Meter a popular
measurement device for:
● Peak Shaving
● Fuel Gas for Compressors of Boilers
● Town Border Stations
● Gas Production Operations
● Gas Transmission Lines

1815A Multiplying Preamplifier for Liquid
This unit is used with Daniel Gas Turbine Meters which require electrical output. A
unique integrated circuit converts rotor velocity to rotor position so that the electrical
output is immune to pipleline vibration and mechanical noise. The preamplifier has a
broad dynamic range to match the wide flow range a gas turbine meter can measure.
This preamplifier is used with bi-directional liquid flow turbine meters and requires two
pickup coils mounted on the meter 90 electrical degrees apart. The preamplifier has
three outputs: output pin D pulses only when flow is from one direction; output pin E
pulses only when flow is from the opposite direction; convenience pin F outputs a
steady dc voltage, + 12v dc or OV dc, depending upon the direction of flow.
This unit is suitable for general purpose liquid measurement, using Daniel "PT" or "CR"
Meters. It will function with any turbine meter whose pickup coil meets the electrical
input requirements. The preamplifier will accept input power from 15 to 30 volts and
deliver a signal swing of 12 volts. It has dc isolation from the pickup coil, making it
suitable for use with cathodic protection systems.
This unit is used with Daniel "PT" Meters and requires two pickup coils mounted 90
electrical degrees apart. The preamplifier has two outputs, XI and X2. XI operates at
the pulse rate of the primary pickup coil A. X2 is the sum of the A coil and the B coil. An
internal circuit detects a coil open circuit and shuts down the X2 output. The Model
1819-4 has dc isolation from the pickup coils, making it suitable for use on cathodically
protected systems. When used as a signal comparator, a failure of either coil, open
circuited or shorted, can be detected and alarmed.

UNIVERSAL PREAMPLIFIER DATA SHEET
REVISION 1.1
1. INTRODUCTION
The Weston Technology Universal Preamplifier (Preamp) converts the low level signal
from a turbine meter inductive pickup to high level pulses. It is distinguished by the
following features:
• Tailored Frequency Response
The sensitivity of the Preamp rolls off as frequency increases, matching the
characteristic output of a turbine meter with inductive pickup. High sensitivity at low
frequencies allows the turbine meter to operate at its lowest possible flow rates.
Reduced sensitivity at high frequencies prevents spurious counting due to RFI and
transients.
• Common Mode Rejection
The Preamp employs a differential amplifier, which responds only to differences
between the COIL+ and COIL- wires. Spurious signals such as 60Hz, RFI, or transients
typically appear on both wires as “common mode” signals. The Preamp is hundreds of
times less sensitive to common mode signals than to the “normal mode” signals
produced by the meter.
• Dual Outputs
With its dual outputs, the Preamp works with virtually any end device. One output
swings from 0V to 5V regardless of the power supply voltage, and is suited for most
inputs with thresholds of 4V or less. An open collector output swings from 0V to any
available power supply voltage up to 36V, sinking up to 50mA.
• Wide Power Supply Range, Low Power Operation
The Preamp operates with any power supply voltage from 5.4 to 36V and requires less
than 1mA. It can be added to virtually any system without special power conditioning,
and typically with no impact on power system requirements.
• Bullet-Proof I/O
The Preamp tolerates continuous short circuits to ground or up to ±36V on any field
wiring terminal without damage. All field wiring terminals are protected against ESD
(electrostatic discharge) and transients.
• Rugged and Convenient Packaging
The Preamp is fully encapsulated in a compact package suitable for mounting on a
panel or in a standard 3” ID explosion-proof housing. Pluggable cage-clamp type
connectors allow convenient, reliable connections without the need for lugs. Terminals
are labeled with signal names to simplify installation.
2. FIELD WIRING
The Preamp has six field wiring terminals, designated as follows:
J1 SIGNAL DESCRIPTION
1 PWR Power supply input (5.4 to 36VDC)
2 COMMON Power supply and signal return
3 0-5V OUT Signal output which swings from 0V to 5V
4 OC OUT Open collector output which swings from 0V to a pullup voltage
5 COIL+ Connects to one side of the pickup coil
6 COIL- Connects to the other side of the pickup coil. If polarity is not
indicated for the coil, COIL+ and COIL- are interchangeable.
The Preamp conditions the low-level output of the meter/pickup coil and produces a
corresponding high-level output for an end device (the end device is a readout, flow
computer, PLC, or other device which acquires the meter output). Where possible, the
Preamp should be located close to the meter. Use twisted-pair wiring if the cable
between the pickup coil and Preamp is longer than a few feet. Do not run the pickup
coil wiring together with other wiring which may cause interference, such as 120VAC or
signals which switch high voltage or current levels. Refer to section 3 of this document
for installations where high levels of EMI (electromagnetic interference) may be present.
There are two basic wiring configurations used between the Preamp and the end
device. Figure 1 below shows the preferred configuration, using the Preamp 0-5V
output. In this configuration, the end device receives a signal which swings nominally
from 0V to 5VDC. Use this configuration if the end device has a threshold of 4.2V or
less and input current of 0.5mA or less. The 0-5V output is preferred because it is
simpler to use and dissipates less power.

Figure 2: OC Output
The OC OUT FET is turned on when the 0-5V output is at the 5V level. When the FET
is turned on, OC OUT is connected to COMMON through a resistance of less than 10
ohms. When the FET is turned off (0-5V output at the 0V level), OC OUT is essentially
an open circuit. A single power supply can provide both power and the pullup voltage.
Note that while the pullup voltage has the same range as the power supply voltage, the
two do not have to be the same. For example, the power supply may be 12V and the
pullup voltage 24V, or vice-versa.
The OC output is conservatively rated to sink a maximum of 50mA. This sets a lower
limit on the pullup resistor value versus the power supply voltage, as illustrated in Figure
3 below.

Maximum Pullup Voltage (V)
A practical upper limit on the pullup resistor value is dictated by output rise time. When
the FET turns off, the pullup resistor causes OC OUT to rise toward the pullup voltage.
Rise time is how long it takes for OC OUT to go from 10% to 90% of the pullup voltage
after the FET turns off. The corresponding value, fall time, measures the time for OC
OUT to go from 90% to 10% of the pullup voltage when the FET turns on. Fall time is
always much less than rise time, and is not affected by the pullup resistor value.
For most applications, rise time depends on the pullup resistor value, cable length, and
end device input capacitance. An end device input designed to accept “high-speed”
signals (up to 5KHz for the Preamp) typically has negligible input capacitance. Figure 4
predicts the approximate rise time versus cable length with a 2K ohm pullup resistor,
excluding end device input capacitance.

Cable Length (ft)
tR = 0.12 * R * L where
The maximum acceptable rise time depends on the end device input characteristics
and the highest expected signal frequency. Consult the end device documentation to
determine if a maximum rise time is specified for the input used with OC OUT.
The maximum rise time allowed should be the lesser of 1) the end device rating, and 2)
the value given by the following calculation:
For example, if the maximum frequency expected from the meter is 4KHz, the rise time
should not exceed 0.3 / 4000 = 75uS. Referring to Figure 4, we see that the maximum
cable length for 75uS rise time with a 2K pullup is about 300 feet. If we need to use
1000 feet of cable, we can calculate the required pullup resistance using the following
formula:
RP = 2 * L1 / L2 where
From the above formula, we determine that RP = 2 * 300 feet / 1000 feet = 0.6K or 600
ohms. We refer to Figure 3 and determine that the maximum allowable pullup voltage
with a 600 ohm resistor is 30V. If our application uses a pullup voltage of 12V, the
power dissipation of the pullup resistor is E2 / R = 122 / 600 = 0.24W. A 600 ohm 1W
pullup resistor is a conservative choice. Average power dissipation of the pullup
resistor during operation will be 0.24W / 2, or 0.12W.
3. INSTALLATION
Mount the Preamp inside a building or enclosure where it is not directly exposed to
weather, as close as practical to the meter. If the Preamp will be exposed to significant
sources of EMI, such as high-powered mobile radios or other nearby transmitters, the
Preamp should be installed in a junction box which is mounted directly on the turbine
meter as shown in Figure 5 below.
All wiring to the end device (PWR, GND, and 0-5 OUT or OC OUT) should be routed
through conduit in environments where high levels of EMI are expected.
Figure 6 below shows front and top views of the Preamp, approximately actual size.

4. ELECTRICAL CHARACTERISTICS
All specifications apply over the operating temperature range unless otherwise
indicated.
Refer to Section 4.5 for a discussion of the coil input frequency response.
4.3 0 to 5V Output
The 0-5 OUT terminal swings between 0V and 5V nominally, at the same rate as the
signal from the pickup coil. If no signal is present at the coil input, the output is stable
at either 0V or 5V.
If 0-5 OUT is connected to a power source due to a wiring error, the output may sink
several amps for a few milliseconds before the protection circuit activates. After a few
milliseconds, if the fault is still present, 0-5 OUT will stabilize at about 20mA. The
output returns to normal operation within seconds after the fault is removed.
OC OUT should connect to a power source through a pullup resistor. The resistor
value must be selected to limit pullup current to 50mA or less. Refer to Section 2.1 for
information about choosing a pullup resistor. If OC OUT is connected directly to a
power source due to a wiring error, the output may sink several amps for a few
milliseconds before the protection circuit activates. After the protection circuit activates,
if the fault is still present, OC OUT will stabilize at about 20mA. The output returns to
normal operation within seconds after the fault is removed.
Figure 7 shows the minimum input amplitude versus frequency for the Preamp. The
curve is produced by a simple formula: Amplitude = (0.06 * Frequency) + 1. Amplitude
is expressed in mVrms, and frequency is expressed in Hertz.

5. ENVIRONMENT
Operating temperature -40 to +70° C
range
Operating humidity range 5% to 95% RH non condensing
While the Preamp itself is designed to meet the requirements for both nonincendive
and intrinsically safe installations, it is the responsibility of the user to ensure that the
combination of pickup coil, Preamp, end device, power supply, and wiring is suitable for
the location.
The total Preamp capacitance is 70uF. It has no inductive components and no internal
power sources. There is no significant temperature rise during normal operation.
On all meters and tubes with raised face flanges, Daniel drills three knock-out dowel pin holes in each flange to
aid in alignment.
After bolt-up, dowel pins should be removed and the holes packed with grease.
Recommended Piping Layouts
RECOMMENDED PIPING LAYOUTS
Maximum accuracy of a turbine meter requires that the fluid stream be free of rotational components. For best results, it is
recommended that the meter be equipped with adequate upstream fluid straightening devices. Flow control valves should be
located downstream of the meter.
Test results have shown that the normal installation ("A" above) is suitable for most installations encountered in meter station
designs. The use of straightening vanes is recommended and they should be installed at a minimum of five pipe diameters
upstream of the turbine meter inlet.
For maximum accuracy in uncertain installations ("B" above), meter tube lengths as recommended in the AGA Gas
Measurement Committee Report No. 7 for turbine meters will provide a safe standard.
Both installations recommend the use of a critical flow control orifice. This orifice provides a controlling restriction for the gas
turbine meter, limiting its possible overrange to approximately 25% over maximum rating.
NOTE: A critical flow control orifice creates a high differential pressure resulting in 50% permanent pressure loss at 25% over
maximum operating range of the turbine meter.
Strainers (Cone and Basket)
STRAINERS (Cone and Basket)
Daniel offers Cone-type Strainers which are installed in the spool section upstream of the meter tube. These
strainers are designed to catch heavy particles in the flow line and have 1/8" diameter perforations on 3/16"
centers. Daniel also offers a Basket-type Strainer which allows ease of access during maintenance. These
strainers are installed adjacent to the spool section upstream of the meter tube and are available in all ratings.

The 3000 can used for orifice or pulse type applications, while the 3405 has been
emphasized to handle gas ultrasonic meters. Each model retains the same circuit boards,
only the flash program memory is unique.
Custom Applications are exactly what this RTU was designed for!
Series 3405
Ultrasonic Meter Interface
This Ultrasonic Interface Series includes the different types of ultrasonic measurement
configurations:
3401 - Single Path Bi-directional Ultrasonic Application
3402 - Two Path Bi-directional Ultrasonic Application
3404 - Four Path Bi-directional Ultrasonic Application
The Series 3405 supports a local parallel interface port to perform initial unit configuration,
periodic transmitter calibration, flow parameter changes, alarm settings and historical data
retrieval. Once configured, ultrasonic meter configuration, alarms, diagnostics and flow
parameters may be retrieved from a host or local computer. All instantaneous and historical
data items are available for retrieval by the host or local computer. Two RS-232 ports are
available; one port connects to the ultrasonic meter, while the other can be used for remote
data acquisition or to another RTU/flow computer device. An I/O card provides optical isolated
field wiring termination for the frequency and status outputs. Eight analog, four digital and two
RTD inputs are available for user defined functions. Additional I/O cards can be added for more
RTU type functions or to provide "mirror" signals to another flow computer/data acquisition
system.
An Optional Graphics LCD display, viewable through a window on the front of the unit, provides
local display of instantaneous and previous day data.
A Class I, Division 1 hazardous location approval for the Series 3405 is available (Standard
Configuration is for General Purpose Use Only). This U.L./C SA listing includes both systems
and entity approvals. Remote communications (radio, dial-up, cellular, etc.) with a Series 3405
in a Division 1 area is accomplished through the Modem interface Module which mounts in an
adjacent non-hazardous area and provides intrinsically safe power and an optically isolated
RS-232 interface to the Series 3405.
The Series 3405 Provides an RS-232 Modbus link to the Ultrasonic which polls specific data
registers for giving a frequency output to other end devices. The frequency output comes from
the TYPE 2 IOU card. The frequency is scaled for a maximum of one KHZ with the voltage
output being an open collector opto isolated type (max.12mA at 24VDC). The 3405 polls the
accumulated volume registers as they become available from the Ultrasonic meter( 4 to 5
seconds). This volume block is broken up as to provide a continuos frequency stream based on
a maximum output of 1 Khz. This method is basically a "frequency continuous volume totalizer".
Each pulse represents a single uncorrected cubic foot of volume. The capability for applying an
output "K factor" will multiply this value to the current output frequency. Volumes can be
calculated using AGA7/AGA8 1992 when connected to a pressure and temperature transmitter.
Series 3000
The Series 3000 flow computer is designed to measure and control the flow of natural gas or
liquids. Thismeasurement can be from a PD, turbine, or an orifice meter. Current applications
can provide single, dual, and triple meter tube configurations. Any 3000 RTU's can be
expanded from a single IOU card (I/O termination's)tomultiple cards for much larger
installations. The basic single IOU card configuration has two RS-232 serial portsand one
parallel port. These communication ports can be configured to bring in data from a gas
chromatograph, remote data retrieval, and local operator (technician) use. The Series 3000 is
certified by U.L. for use in a Class I, Division 1, Group D hazardous location. Data retrieval,
when configured for remote access, can be accomplished by cellular radio, UHF & VHF radio,
and Dial-Up land line modems. The 3000 has extremely low power requirements and can
operate using solar or AC/DC charging systems. When sizing a communication power system,
the 3000 can be connected to the 12VDC battery with only a 40mA drain. This technique
reduces initial cost, eliminates a second power system, and simplifies installation and
maintenance. Daniel has Series 3000 systems installed from Michigan to Argentina. Most of
these systems are solar powered with radio communications.

SOLARFLOW PLUS
THE BATTERY POWERED RTU
Solarflow-Plus: A Battery Powered RTU (Remote Terminal Unit) With Flexible Calculation and Advanced
Communication Capabilities
When power is unavailable or unreliable, consider a Solarflow-Plus RTU for your flow-measurement system.
Replace mechanical circular charts with this versatile microprocessor. Eliminate maintenance costs and
calibration problems of mechanical charts. Speed the collection of more accurate data for faster operational
control and billing with its flexible capability for interfacing via telephone, cellular telephone, radio, satellite, fiber
optics, or other communications media.
Built for typical outdoor, remote installations and environmentally tested at the factory, Solarflow-Plus units
provide maximum measurement and communications versatility in a cost-effective package. We invite you to
examine the additional details in the rest of this brochure about the battery powered RTU for your remote flow
measurement and data communication needs.
COMMUNICATIONS
Solarflow-Plus RTU capabilities match any existing or new communication links. Including speech!
Auto-dial alarm callout activates speech synthesizing circuits for verbal reports to the operator via telephone,
digitally to a remote printer, or to a central computer. The RTU can also be queried directly from a touch-tone
telephone keypad to produce "verbal" response for immediate and easy-to-understand third-party reports.
Third-party reports can also be displayed by a "dumb" terminal or printer.
Our Daniel specialists can tailor communication protocols to integrate with your existing or planned SCADA
systems. Or we can help you design completely new networks. Our optional protocol is Gould Modbus; others
can be quickly implemented. The Solarflow-Plus RTU can be integrated into telephone, cellular telephone,
radio, satellite, or fiber-optics communication systems.
Longitudinal Redundancy Check (LRC-16) techniques assure data integrity to or from a Solarflow-Plus unit.
INPUTS
One of the important benefits you can enjoy with a Solarflow-Plus system is measurement flexibility to meet
your current and future needs. Standard input configurations include:
● stacked or single DP for orifice
● parallel orifice
● triple-run single DP
● parallel or single turbine or PD meters
with temperature, pressure and specific gravity correction if desired. Nine status inputs are available for
monitoring on-site conditions.
CALCULATIONS/OUTPUTS
AGA 7, AGA 3 and full NX19 calculations are made on-site based on transmitter samples every 1/2 second.
Each factor is calculated directly from the AGA equations from every ten seconds to once a minute, depending
on the application. These calculations are at a much faster rate than the less accurate hourly updates currently
available.
The Solarflow-Plus memory stores up to 35 days of hourly data on volume, differential pressure or meter
pulses, flowing temperature and alarms. Parameters logged are operator programmable. Solarflow-Plus units
can produce a new log every time a critical parameter changes. For example, if an orifice plate is changed,
measurements immediately after the change will be accurate rather than having to wait for the next logging
period before the new plate diameter is used in calculations.
Time, pressure and temperature indices, formerly derived from charts, can be produced thus providing a
smooth transition from charts to electronic flow measurement. Solarflow-Plus systems offer complete audit
trails plus a wide range of data logging intervals including 5, 15, or 30 minutes and 1, 4, and 24 hours as well
as monthly.
All data can be quickly, accurately, and reliably transmitted to your central computer via virtually any field
communication technique. Similarly, parameter logging intervals and alarms/reports configurations can be
quickly downloaded from a host to the Solarflow-Plus RTU.
Data transmission is most rapid with a direct link from filed to office. However, you can let a Hand-Held Data
Terminal (HHDT) "dump" to a printer or host computer direct or via telephone modem when this format is
advantageous for you.
Each HHDT can collect up to 35 days of hourly data from up to 7 Solarflow-Plus units, up to 30 with expanded
HHDT memory. Even more units can be downloaded if less than 35 days information is required or time
intervals are longer than hourly.
