Guthrie & Ghani Fabric Shop on Instagram: "Buttonhole gone wrong? No problem! Here’s my tips to fix: First, neaten the area and remove any stray bits of thread. Then set your machine to a narrow zigzag - 2mm wide and 0.3mm long. Centre your foot over the stitching and carefully re-stitch that side, backstitching at both ends. (You can always pop a bit of fray check on at the end for strength.) If you’ve gone a fair way through the buttonhole and torn the fabric then you could also add a patch behind the buttonhole before re-stitching to add strength. Easy peasy #SewingTips! Always sew button holes through two layers of fabric with interfacing or stabiliser between the layers of fabric. . 3. If your machine does one or two button holes perfectly then starts going off course and forgetting it’s doing button holes try resetting the machine to straight stitch back to button hole stitch each time you sew a new button hole. . 4. I know I said 3 tips.. but here’s a bonus one. If you’re going to use an unpicker or seam ripper to cut open your button hole PLEASE put a pin there to reduce the chance of destroying your garment. Or even better buy a button hole cutter. They come in different sizes and offer a clean professional cut. .
